Saw XI appears to be struggling to survive.
The Hollywood Reporter has learned “zero progress” has been made on the next installment since writing partners Patrick Melton and Marcus Dunstan turned in a draft back in spring of 2024.
“We haven’t heard anything since May,” says Saw XI screenwriter Melton, who has been involved with the franchise since 2007’s Saw IV. “It’s stalled at a managerial level. It has nothing to do with the creative or anything else. There’s higher-level things at play.”
In late December 2023, Lionsgate announced that franchise mainstay Kevin Greutert was attached to direct Saw XI for a September 2024 release, but the studio ultimately delayed it by a year to Sept. 26, 2025. Greutert helmed Saw X, which revitalized the franchise when it hit theaters in September 2023 and collected $112 million at the global box office. It is unclear if he is still involved in Saw XI, and...

As soon as Saw X, the tenth entry in the Saw franchise (you can read our review Here), was released in September of 2023, franchise producers were already talking about the potential of a Saw XI. The official announcement came that December, along with a release date: September 27, 2024… but then it was said that the producers and Lionsgate had decided to take a little extra time with this one, Saw XI was pushed back to September 26, 2025. Now, our friends at Bloody Disgusting are reporting that we might not see another sequel in the Saw franchise at all, as a source “close to the production” has informed them that Saw XI has been cancelled!
According to this source, “It’s totally dead. It’s 100% over. Almost a year now.” The source added, “Everything went sideways in January 2024 … the producers started fighting.” One producer attempted to plow forward with the film, but the...

Although students of film look to the past to learn what inspired modern filmmaking, groundbreaking cinema is being created every day. With the world of entertainment being more fast-paced and streamlined than ever before, filmmakers are finding new and innovative ways to tell stories for all audiences.
General audiences have been outspoken about their feelings that many films nowadays all feel similar. However, there are plenty of modern masterpieces that deserve more praise for what they've done for filmmaking today.
John Wick Changed the Action Genre John Wick (2014)
John Wick is now considered to be one of the biggest and best modern action franchises today, including four films, a prequel streaming series and the spinoff film Ballerina, set for release later this year. While the massive success seems obvious now, the first John Wick film was initially destined to be a straight-to-dvd and Blu-ray release after initial test screenings went poorly.

A silly, pulpy mystery entirely sure of its own conceit, “Drop” combines tech paranoia and the looming specter of abuse to create something surprisingly taut and entertaining. Directed by Christopher Landon — best known for his involvement in the “Happy Death Day” and “Paranormal Activity” movies — the film’s complicated setups are executed with a deft and capable hand. Although set in a fine dining establishment, it’s a junk-food thriller fried to near-perfection, balancing the tensions of kidnapping, conspiracy and murder with those of a nerve-wracking first date. It’s crisp and delicious.
After a hair-raising prologue involving a couple pointing guns at one another (a scene whose purpose clicks into place much later), “Drop” gently introduces its protagonist, widowed mother Violet (Meghann Fahy), as she prepares for her first date with Henry (Brandon Sklenar), a handsome photographer she’s been speaking to online. Her snarky, supportive sister Jen (Violett Beane...

Dog owners are often known to be extremely attentive to their pets, showering them with treats and affection and generally considering them one of the family. But filmmaker Ben Leonberg took things a step further. He’s taken his own dog, Indy, and made him the center of a feature-length horror film. The photogenic retriever takes the ball and runs with it (presumably literally as well as figuratively) and proves his star power in Good Boy, receiving its world premiere in the Midnighter section at SXSW.
It’s the sort of high-concept project that horror filmmakers often resort to to separate themselves from the rest of a very crowded field, such as the found-footage trend pioneered by the likes of The Blair Witch Project and Paranormal Activity. Horror fans will be happy to know that one of the most dependable franchises of the decade is now available to stream for free. Insidious and three of its four sequels have now been unleashed for your streaming pleasure. The free streaming platform Tubicontinues to kill it at bringing hidden gems and beloved classics to the masses. Browsing the Tubi catalog somehow feels like strolling the aisles of a video store, which, for the kids out there, was a building that had physical copies of movies you could rent and is now probably a vape store.
The first Insidious film, which was made by directing and writing super-team, James Wan and Leigh Whannell - who have collaborated on this franchise as well as the original Saw film - was a sleeper hit that, on a meager 1.5 million dollar budget, managed to earn 100 million worldwide at the box office.

Paranormal Activity etched its name in horror lore as one of those rare marketing moments that altered the very fabric of the genre as we knew it. An undisputable monster in a genre of monsters. A cultural phenomenon that stood for everything we loved about the genre. A movie that made you feel something in a way only horror can provide. Some went home and turned on all the lights in the house. Some scoffed, proudly unbothered by its attempts to creep them out. But everyone saw it. Everyone talked about it. Most of them thirsty for more home video shenanigans. How the hell do you follow that up? This… is what happened to Paranormal Activity 2.
In 2007, Paranormal Activity made close to $200 million dollars on a $15,000 budget. Meaning the Corleone’s themselves could have put a severed horse head in the bed of every executive at Paramount Pictures to stop...

Most movies revolve around characters making decisions. Sometimes the universe just hits a character with back-to-back punches to move the story along, but for the most part, the plot is driven by the characters. Like in real life, making smart decisions can have great results, and unwise ones can have negative consequences.
The horror genre is a prime example of that fact, as decisions in a horror movie often mean life and death. The genre is known for featuring characters that make horrible choices. There are long-lasting tropes and clichés built around those questionable actions. It's so easy for someone to watch intense situations unfold on a screen and think about all the ways they could do it better. Retrospect often plays a big role in that, too, and people know that if the characters didn't make ridiculous decisions, there wouldn't be much of a movie. But that doesn't make watching it easier,...

It seems director Osgood Perkins can do no wrong these days, as after his 2024 low budget smash hit Longlegs thrilled audiences to the tune of $126 million at the box office, The Monkey is garnering rave reviews ahead of its release this weekend. Starring Theo James, the latest Stephen King adaptation is being heralded as a can’t-miss horror-comedy hybrid, but apparently there's another aspect of the film you should stay seated for: a post-credits scene.
According to Total Film (via Gamesradar) The Monkey's post-credits scene is not one that expands or adds anything to the film you just saw, but is rather a preview of Perkins' next horror offering, Keeper. There's no word on if it's a full trailer or just a tease, but regardless, it's definitely something worth staying seated for, as Perkins has easily solidified himself as one of the hottest genre directors around following the release of Longlegs,...

A run of successful horror remakes abruptly ended in 2010, which spelled trouble for Platinum Dunes. Producer Brad Fuller explains what happened next.
For almost a decade, Platinum Dunes was one of the most successful independent production companies in Hollywood. Beginning with The Texas Chainsaw Massacre in 2003, which made over $100 million on a sub-$10m budget, the studio seemed to have hit on a magical formula: make genre movies to a price, attached to classic horror titles.
Texas Chainsaw was therefore followed by a string of other remakes, all based on films from the 70s and 80s: 2005’s The Amityville Horror was followed by The Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning in 2006; The Hitcher, Friday The 13th and A Nightmare On Elm Street were all released between 2007 and 2009.
In the financial crisis era, audiences, it seemed, loved gory escapism. But in 2010, something strange happened: Platinum Dunes co-founder Brad Fuller noticed that his phone had stopped ringing.

Just when you thought Companion was going to be the big Valentine’s Day horror crossbreed movie, along comes Heart Eyes.
Heart Eyes is about a young woman named Ally (Olivia Holt from Cloak & Dagger) who, while having a rough day at work, meets an attractive stranger named Jay (Mason Gooding from the newer Scream movies). They are forced into working together, which leads to a reluctant romance, mainly because it’s Valentine’s Day. All they have to do is survive the night. Both figuratively and literally.
See, the city where they live, Seattle, is the new hunting ground for a serial killer called The Heart Eyes Killer, or H.E.K. for short, who only comes out on this one day and stalks couples. And he has, apparently, mistaken Allie...

Who among us, when we were young, did not annoy the cranky old geezer down the street? In some cases, you couldn’t help it, as there are some people who simply aren’t made for suburban living, terrifying the neighborhood kids by growling “Get off my lawn!” any time an oblivious child stepped foot on their precious property. In so doing, they made themselves targets when it came time to toilet-paper someone’s house or ding-dong ditch. No one dreamed the witch next door would make good on her threats.

Freaky and Happy Death Day director Christopher Landon was supposed to be working on Scream 7 – but that project turned out to be so troubled, he had to activate his ejector seat and get out of there. While he has since been replaced on Scream 7 by Kevin Williamson, he has been busy lining up other genre projects, signing on to direct the werewolf thriller Big Bad and the “fast-paced thriller” Drop. Coming our way from Blumhouse and Platinum Dunes, the production company team that has previously brought us the Purge franchise, Drop moved forward first, and is aiming for an April 11th theatrical release. With that date swiftly approaching, a trailer for Drop has dropped and can be seen in the embed above.

While the franchise consists of seven movies, the Paranormal Activity movies in order is different chronologically than it is by release date. The main thread of the found-footage franchise follows the sinister demon "Tobi" as he terrorizes families and households throughout the decades. The complex lore of the Paranormal Activity movies begins with the original 2007 film that introduces Tobi and his primary anchor for most of the series, Katie. As the films continue, the expanding backstory and interweaving network of characters gradually reveal a rich, detailed universe of supernatural horror.
The franchise includes backstories, time travel, recurring characters, and connections to Tobi and Katie. With such an intricate chronology, the question of where to start with the Paranormal Activity movies can seem daunting. Two franchise installments are prequels, and two interact directly with Katie's past. There is also an unofficial non-canon Japanese sequel, Paranormal Activity 2: Tokyo Night, but that...

The Blair Witch Project ending caps off the haunting found-footage movie on a suitable ambiguous and chilling note, but it leaves many questions about what exactly happened. 1999's The Blair Witch Project series was a low-budget independent horror film from co-directors Daniel Myrick and Eduardo Sanchez. The found-footage horror follows three student filmmakers who wander the woods of Burkittsville, Maryland, to investigate the legend of the Blair Witch. In the forests around where the village of Blair once stood, they encounter the Blair Witch — although the movie's Blair Witch monster is never shown in full before the movie ends.
After The Blair Witch Project ending, the trio is never seen again, but a year following their disappearance, the footage they shot is recovered. It's this "real" footage that the movie is made from, and this approach helped spawn further found-footage horrors like Paranormal Activity, Quarantine, and Cloverfield. However, despite the...

The third film in a horror franchise often carries the weight of high expectations and franchise fatigue. However, some horror “threequels” break the mold, delivering scares, thrills, and fresh twists. Here are ten of the best horror movie threequels that deserve your attention.
1. A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors (1987)
Director: Chuck Russell
This third instalment reinvigorates Freddy Krueger with a mix of dark humour, creative dream sequences, and a cast of characters who fight back. It’s a fan favourite for good reason.
2. Halloween III: Season of the Witch (1982)
Director: Tommy Lee Wallace
Although it departs from Michael Myers entirely, this standalone entry is a cult classic in its own right. Its eerie plot about a sinister mask company and haunting jingle makes it a unique entry in the Halloween franchise.

When it comes to horror, Blumhouse continues to be a Hollywood leader in terms of its output. The company is behind horror hits like Get Out (2017), M3GAN (2022), Hush (2016), and The Invisible Man (2021), with the Blumhouse model dating back to 2007's Paranormal Activity. Making films at low budget levels, giving filmmakers creative freedom, and releasing horror films through the studio system is how Blumhouse operates, and it's resulted in some strong slates in recent years.
Blumhouse has had a relatively strong 2024, starting the year off with Night Swim, which may not have fared well with critics but was a box office success. The same can be said for Imaginary, but the company's following movie, Afraid, failed to really connect critically or commercially. In September, however, Blumhouse released a horror movie that can be considered its best of the year, earning strong scores on Rotten Tomatoes and striking gold at the box office.

The co-creator and star of a Blumhouse found footage franchise explains why they made the jump from Netflix to Shudder. Although it's primarily known for its movie offerings, which run the gamut from Happy Death Day to Get Out, Blumhouse has had several television series with varying levels of success. Some of their more notable projects in recent years include the horror anthology Into the Dark and Prime Video's The Horror of Dolores Roach.
The production company made its mark, however, with the 2009 found footage horror Paranormal Activity. Directed by Oren Peli, and continuing in the form of several sequels, Paranormal Activity helped to propel found footage horrors as a way of telling familiar stories through a fresh lens and subverting expectations. Another mini-franchise, which has made the jump to television, would follow a few years later.

The found footage horror movie subgenre saturated the film market after The Blair Witch Project was released in 1999. It might have taken a few years, but by the end of the 2000s, the monumental success of Paranormal Activity assured us that the subgenre wasn't going anywhere. Since then, we've gotten several found footage franchises, such as Rec, V/H/S, and Creep, as well as six more Paranormal Activity stories and a Blair Witch sequel. Although some argue the subgenre is stale and overused, there are still fresh releases that revive the style. And in 2022, we got the perfect example of this in Deadstream. The horror comedy manages to be interchangeably satirical and terrifying, filled with humor, jump scares, grotesque practical effects, and unpredictable twists.

If you've been online in the last several years, you know that film fans love to make their little ranked lists of franchise movies, particularly horror fans. In addition to the fun of making a ranking, people love to use these exercises to express their individuality, often highlighting undervalued or overpraised entries in a given series as a way of going against the grain of consensus. Not that people are always looking to be contrarian; a lot of these rankings tend to strongly resemble one another. Still, you rarely find a few that are exactly alike.
Yet sometimes, a consensus is inarguably reached. As an aggregator, Rotten Tomatoes provides a decent bird's eye view of a film's reception. While it's hardly the first or last word on a movie, it certainly helps one understand the conversation at large surrounding it. There are numerous examples of movies that are generally beloved...

Horror franchises have continued to dominate the genre, often overshadowing new releases that do not have a connection to a well-known and popular series. Many of these franchises have a mix of good and bad movies, including icons like Halloween, Alien, Saw, and The Conjuring. These titles have had enough success to overshadow the lackluster installments, even if they're known for only one or two major films that keep the series alive.
Other horror franchises in the genre have not withstood the test of time or kept viewers interested in more bad installments than good or even decent ones. Series like Puppet Master and Paranormal Activity may have a cult following, but the overall critical and audience reception is exceptionally poor. Despite having multiple sequels, these horror series only have one distinguishable film.

The Blair Witch Project is getting a re-release that will finally capture the filmmakers' true vision. Released on July 14, 1999, The Blair Witch Project followed a documentary team hiking into the Black Hills to explore the legend of the Blair Witch. Shot on a budget of $35,000-$65,000, the movie grossed $248.6 million, becoming a sleeper hit. It spawned two sequels, and popularized the found footage technique later used by the Paranormal Activity movies.
According to a tweet on Twitter/X by Mike Monello of Haxan Films, the production company responsible for The Blair Witch Project, the film is finally getting a home video release in the way it was intended. Monello reveals the original movie was shot in 16mm black and white, but, to make it suitable for theatrical release, it had to be transferred to 35mm. When releasing on home video, Artisan erroneously used the transfer version, resulting in compromised quality.

Oren Pelis supernatural found-footage horror film Paranormal Activity spawned a franchise that included seven movies, so the Paranormal Activity timeline needs some explaining. The films follow the history of two sisters named Katie and Kristi who are tormented by a demonic entity, "Toby." As the franchise expanded with sequels, prequels, and parallel installments, the exact timeline of events remains complicated. The franchise shares a basic premise: supernatural occurrences that are caught "found-footage" such as security systems, webcams, and more.

Blumhouse and Lionsgate are teaming up to produce a new film in the Blair Witch Project franchise, and there are already exciting updates about the upcoming movie. Debuting in 1999, The Blair Witch Project turned Hollywood on its ear when the extremely low-budget indie horror film took the world by storm. The pioneering found footage movie was shot on handheld camcorders and follows a group of young adults as they traverse the Maryland woods in search of the eponymous legend. What made the movie so memorable was that it had audiences guessing about what was real and what was fiction.
Of course, it was all fiction, but The Blair Witch Project quickly became one of the most profitable movies of all time when it earned millions of dollars on a budget that was reportedly below one million. Though the gimmick of found footage wasn't originated by Blair Witch, it helped kick...

The video game adaptation Five Nights at Freddy’s (read our review Here) quickly became Blumhouse Productions’ highest-grossing movie when it reached theatres and the Peacock streaming service back in October, surpassing the likes of Split, The Invisible Man, The Black Phone, M3GAN, the recent Halloween sequel trilogy, and the Paranormal Activity, Insidious, and The Purge franchises with its haul of $295 million. So, of course, there’s a sequel coming our way, aiming for a December 5, 2025 theatrical release. Returning star Josh Hutcherson (The Hunger Games) recently said that Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 is going to be bigger and scarier than its predecessor, and now co-star Matthew Lillard (Scream) has added that the movie is going to be fan-centric and action-packed.

This post contains spoilers for the "Paranormal Activity" franchise.
When "Paranormal Activity" was first released in 2007, it was a small-scale, indie found-footage endeavor spearheaded by Oren Peli, shot with an initial budget of around $15,000. After the feature made some waves and was acquired by Paramount, the trajectory of this horror offering, which was initially meant as a standalone entry, changed forever. Now armed with a new alternate ending, "Paranormal Activity" had an unbelievably lucrative run at the box office, and this overwhelming success went on to spawn a highly profitable franchise with stories that sported interconnected timelines and a shared found footage convention. Over 10 films to date and an 11th scheduled for late September of 2025, Saw is a franchise that rivals most in terms of both output and fandom. It had a run of 7 straight films over 7 years which began with the out of nowhere Saw in 2004 and culminating with Saw 3D in 2010. Its consistency may have trailed off temporarily with scattered entries following in 2017, 2021, and 2023, but the series as a whole is well known and has branched off into nearly every conceivable type of media. Directors Daniel Myrick and Eduardo Sanchez tell us how they started a found footage frenzy with their pivotal 1999 horror, The Blair Witch Project.
In 1999, a tiny indie film changed the face of horror. Its viral marketing campaign was soon adopted by bigger Hollywood movies like Cloverfield (2008). Other filmmakers rushed to make their own documentary-style shockers – most notably writer-director Oren Peli’s Paranormal Activity (2007), which helped turn Blumhouse Productions into the horror powerhouse it is today.
The Blair Witch Project was the work of first-time directors (and former University of Centaal Florida film students) Daniel Myrick and Eduardo Sanchez, who in the early 1990s came up with their initial concept: the movie would essentially be a faux documentary, cut together from the film and video material left behind by three investigators who vanished while investigating the legend of a witch. On an initial budget of at most $60,000, The Blair Witch Project...

Quick Links The Babadooks Director Refuses to Allow a Sequel The Babadook Doesnt Need a Sequel The Babadook Still Terrifies 10 Years Later
10 years ago, the horror genre had one of its most prolific years ever. While we hadnt quite hit the renaissance that the combined efforts of Jordan Peele and A24 would bring about a few years later, 2014 was still a surprisingly solid year for audiences looking for a good fright. Sequels like The Purge: Anarchy and Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones brought continued success to their franchises, while original stories like As Above So Below, Deliver Us From Evil, and especially It Follows proved profitable to varying degrees.
Yet far and away, horrors crown jewel of 2014 was The Babadook, which earned rave critical reviews and saw a worldwide gross of over $10 million on a budget of just $2 million. In the years since,...
