Unexpected

I was pleasantly surprised by Unexpected, which is a good balance between Dark humor and tragedy. The film follows Bob and Amy, who are a happy couple. However, when they find out they can't have kids, they move to a run-down country farmhouse where they hire a handyman, Rupert, and his high school son, Gerard, and in the process, meet the son's eccentric girlfriend, Shirlee. Unable to have kids, Amy (Anna Camp) looks to feel that hole in her life by adopting animals while her husband struggles with depression. At the same time, Gerard and Shirlee discover a surprise of their own. I won't spoil anything, but its a cute film, even if the humor is dark at times.

There have been a lot of movies about people who are unable to have kids. However, this one took an interesting take, and it wasn't really about adoption. Instead, I would say. This movie is about human relationship and their ups and downs. Some parts of the movie were predictable, but for the most, this was an original and unique film. There were times when I was laughing out loud, and other times I felt truly bad for the characters. Anna Camp is one of my favorite actors, and she kills it in this movie. She is so perfect for this type of role. Even if she is tired of playing the southern controlling blonde, she does it so well and kills it in every scene. The way she can go through radical mood swings is amazing. Joseph Mazzello (Tim from Jurassic Park) was a bit dry at times, but I enjoyed his character arc. And I thought the ending of the movie was both beautiful and tragic. Overall, I really enjoyed this film, and I'd recommend checking it out.

We didn't expect this movie to hit so hard. The acting by Anna Camp is great, covering all the manic mommy-brain one gets when THAT gene turns on.

The script is funny, then heavy, then funny again, and the arc really kept us engaged throughout the story. You really feel for the characters by the time you're 15 minutes in.

Unexpected is a story about a guy (Bob) and a girl (Amy) that grow up, get married, and are ready for the cutest little family anyone could wish for with only one problem.... Amy's chances of getting pregnant are 2-3 percent. "Doctor, are you thinking it's closer to two, or three?", she asks at one point with a hopeful face. Anyone that's gone through IVF can immediately identify with this line!

With their chances at such a low level and their driving need to have the perfect family at such a high level, they opt for a farm house and animal babies instead, with gradually greater mishaps, all while trying to fill the emptiness in their souls.

Then they find that their purpose may not be to have the perfect family at all, but to expand their love to new people. People that need guidance and help, and just a little direction.

The movie could use a better music score and better musical timing, and Joseph Mazzello seems kinda noncommittal during the first half, but overall a solid story about life's little curveballs.

The movie not only inspires but serves as a beacon for those navigating the complexities of infertility, miscarriages, and relationships. With a beautiful narrative portraying vulnerability, strength, and hope, "Unexpected" refreshes the soul at its core. Anna Camp and Joseph Mazzello deliver performances that resonate, making this film a poignant exploration of the universal dream of building a family.

What the heck did I just attempt to watch? Was it a comedy? Because if it was it was about as funny as a root canal! Was it a drama? Because in that case the character's were about as unrealistic and unrelatable as it's possible to be. I tried so hard to like this film. But I had to skip through to the end after 30 painful minutes.

The film follows an infertile couple as they navigate their childlessness and bouts of toddleresque emotional instability. Yes grown men and women can apparently have tantrums? They never actually communicate with one another and make insane decisions without the other's input. Decisions that would send most couples to the divorce court.

Joseph Mazello's (of the acclaimed Pacific) character tries to engage in "therapy", but the satire (?) completely misses the mark. Too idiotic to be believable and too dumb to be good satire.

Honestly this just feels like it was written by teenagers playing around with big emotions and trying to be funny, whilst achieving neither.

Completely deserves the low ratings it is getting. Please don't waste your life on this. Go watch Instant family instead.
