Co-written by the screenwriter of Moon, Slingshot stars Casey Affleck, Laurence Fishburne and Tomer Capone as fractious astronauts. Here’s a trailer:
To the ever-growing ‘unhappy men in space’ sci-fi subgenre we can now add Slingshot – a psychological thriller starring Casey Affleck, Laurence Fishburne and The Boys’ Tomer Capone as a trio of stressed-out astronauts.
The explorers are on a mission to Saturn’s moon, Titan, when something goes awry and they’re forced to attempt a risky slingshot manoeuvre in order to reach their destination. Meanwhile, Affleck’s character begins to hallucinate. Oh, and Fishburne’s brought a revolver with him for some reason.
Aside from a cracking cast, Slingshot has a good pedigree behind the camera. Its director is Sweden’s Mikael Håfström, director of such genre pieces as 1408, based on the Stephen King short story of the same name, The Rite, an enjoyably daft exorcism horror from 2011, and Escape Plan,...

Space travel is not for the weak. It takes a special kind of person to brave the cosmos and not recoil from insignificance while coming to grips with how small we are in an ocean of stars and infinite possibilities. If you’re not careful, the weight of your mission and the isolation that comes with the job can warp your senses, making you see and hear things that are not there. In Mikael Håfström’s Slingshot trailer, Casey Affleck, Laurence Fishburne, and Tomer Capone star in a psychological thriller about three astronauts making Ren and Stimpy’s case of space madness look like child’s play.

As the movie progresses, strange things start to happen on Anthony’s film sets, with him even banging his head on a table and contorting his body. This makes Lee consult a Catholic priest. Things take a more disastrous turn when Father Conor tries to perform an exorcism on the movie sets.

Exorcism movies tap into universal fear of supernatural evil, with different cultural spins keeping audiences engaged. Innovative approaches to exorcism scenes, like found footage and non-Christian perspectives, enhance the terror of possession films. Despite varying styles, the original exorcism movie, "The Exorcist," remains the pinnacle of the genre due to its iconic and intense scenes.
Though there are a multitude of exorcism horror movies, relatively few of them manage to make their exorcism scenes genuinely scary. The idea of possession extends beyond the horror genre. In cultures across the world, there is a deep-rooted fear of the sinister side of the supernatural, with stories of demons and evil spirits a universal theme. This explains why, whatever the horror zeitgeist, exorcism and possession movies always prove popular with filmmakers and audiences.
Given how many different kinds of exorcism horror movies there are, it follows that there are just as many spins on the quintessential exorcism scene.

Demons, witches, and devils have been around in religion and life for nearly as long as people have been around. This extends into movies as since the very beginning of motion pictures, we have attempted to capture the fears of these types of fears on film in a number of ways. Most of the media we see on it is built out from existing ideas to create a new narrative that looks to capture the interests of the general public enough to make a profit or base a movie on it. While many people know both the book and movie of The Exorcist, something like The Rite (watch it Here) that more or less came and went in the early 2010s proves that it also has an interesting story to tell. Whether or not you believe in the religious supernatural events found in either the book or the movie, it...

"The Rite" takes a more authentic approach to exorcism, focusing on the mechanics and practical application within the Catholic Church. The film is based on a book by Matt Baglio that documents Father Gary Thomas' training and experiences as an exorcist-in-training. After completing his training, Father Gary Thomas became the Director of a pre-seminary preparation program, receiving numerous requests to perform exorcisms.
The Rite states that it's based on true events despite bolstering its exorcism scenes with predictable Hollywood melodrama, prompting fans to wonder how much of it is based in reality. It follows a skeptical seminary student in Rome named Michael Kovak (Colin O'Donoghue) who must attend a Vatican school of exorcism in order to complete his training. He believes possession is the work of a troubled mind rather than demonic influence, but after becoming an apprentice to Father Lucas (Anthony Hopkins), he encounters a terrifying force under the...

Michael's struggle with faith throughout The Rite is rooted in his traumatic past, causing him to question the existence of God and the devil. Father Lucas' guilt over Rosaria's death opens the door for the devil to possess him, as the devil resents him for attempting the exorcism. The bent cross symbolizes Michael's lack of faith, and it is only when he declares his belief in the devil and God that he is able to defeat BA'al.
The Rite chronicles Father Michael Kovak's journey to finding faith, a feat he accomplishes by the film's ending. The real Father Gabriele Amorth loved the 1973 movie The Exorcist, calling it a reflection of a true story with overblown special effects. He also praised the Catholic horror movie The Rite. Movies like The Exorcist changed the conversation around exorcisms, which was previously regarded as witchcraft. This shift in perception made Father Amorth's career as an exorcist possible. The Exorcist's cultural impact led to a steep increase in exorcism requests, prompting the Catholic Church to appoint more trained exorcists. Father Amorth started his work as an exorcist ten years after the release of the film.
As the inspiration for the 2023 film The Pope's Exorcist, the real Father Gabriele Amorth unsurprisingly had a strong opinion about the classic horror movie The Exorcist. Warning: Contains Spoilers for The Pope's Exorcist.Even with its beautiful locations, jump scares, and compelling mystery, The Pope's Exorcist wouldn't work without Russell Crowe's surprising true story detail. Taken from the real accounts of Father Gabriele Amorth while he performed as Chief Exorcist to the Vatican, The Pope's Exorcist nonetheless takes creative liberties with Amorth's character, particularly as he's played by the physically imposing Crowe, who zips around Rome on his Lambretta wearing sunglasses and using shotguns where prayers fail. The Pope's Exorcist fills a void left vacant by movies like The Da Vinci Code and blends action-adventure with horror to deliver a unique entry into the well-trod exorcism subgenre.
In the 30 years that he served The Pope, the real-life Father Amorth supposedly committed over 100,000 exorcisms, some of which are chronicled in his two memoirs Father Amorth: My Battle Against Satan and An Exorcist Tells His Story. The...

The Pope’s Exorcist draws basis from the books An Exorcist Tells His Story and An Exorcist: More Stories, penned by Catholic priest and exorcist Gabriele Amorth. Screenwriters Michael Petroni (The Rite) and Evan Spiliotopoulos (The Unholy), along with director Julius Avery (Overlord), eschew the biopic approach when exploring Amorth’s tenure as an exorcist in favor of a by-the-books horror movie. Russell Crowe is the sole saving grace in this diluted and often silly entry in exorcism horror.
Avery’s latest introduces his rebellious Gabriel Amorth (Crowe) in a rural village in 1987. Amorth walks in with remarkable confidence and jovial mischief in his eyes as he quickly exposes a case of psychosis, not possession, leaving the local priest splattered in blood and the family shocked. Amorth barely has time to cuckoo at nuns and get scolded by higher-ups at the Vatican before he’s summoned to a crumbling abbey in Spain.

Sunday Update: Illumination/Nintendo/Universal’s The Super Mario Bros Movie has made history with the biggest worldwide opening ever for an animated title at $377.5M. Of that plumb pazzo result, an estimated $172.8M comes from the international box office. Wahoo!, indeed.
The movie just took off with audiences — and four-quad, to boot. We’re now looking at a potential $1B worldwide grosser. Fans are loving it, and it’s expected to have strong legs with no clear competition in the marketplace going forward.

The movie just took off with audiences — and four-quad, to boot. We’re now looking at a potential $1B worldwide grosser. Fans are loving it, and it’s expected to have strong legs with no clear competition in the marketplace going forward.

On the face of it, “The Pope’s Exorcist” would have you believe that it’s rooted in the real-life experiences of the late Father Gabriele Amorth, the Catholic priest who served for 30 years as the head exorcist of the Diocese of Rome. Its screenwriting credits proclaim as much, for starters, while a surfeit of onscreen dates and locations in the early going lend proceedings the faintest of docudrama veneers; moreover, the film is backed by the non-profit production arm of the Jesuit research university Loyola Marymount, with Loyola rector Father Edward J. Siebert among its executive producers.
Even Catholics in high places, it turns out, have a sense of humor: You needn’t wait for the “work of fiction” disclaimer in the closing credits to discern that “The Pope’s Exorcist” is ripely fantastical trash, inspired by Amorth’s work in much the same way that SunnyD is inspired by Florida oranges,...

The Wicker Man
Blu ray
Viavision [Imprint]
1973 / 1.85 : 1 / 93 Min.
Starring Edward Woodward, Christopher Lee, Britt Ekland
Written by Anthony Shaffer
Directed by Robin Hardy
While away on assignment in Scotland, a melancholy company man experiences a life-changing, and possibly supernatural, transformation. This tale of magic and metamorphosis isn’t Bill Forsyth’s utopian Local Hero but Robin Hardy’s apocalyptic The Wicker Man, the story of a god-fearing detective named Neil Howie. The lonesome hot shot of Forsyth’s film is given a new lease on life but for Howie there’s no such reward—just a whiff of fire and brimstone as his dreams go up in smoke.
The title card reads “Anthony Shaffer’s The Wicker Man“, suggesting that the famed playwright was a more than equal partner along alongside Hardy and the film’s producer, Peter Snell. Shaffer based his screenplay on David Pinner’s Rituals, a...

It’s last call for a number of great movies leaving HBO and HBO Max in March. Fortunately, the month is also packed with new movies and shows, but if you were planning to revisit any of the films below, now’s your chance.
The good news is you won’t have to squeeze in any binge-watching – there are no series leaving HBO Max this month, just films. Expiring titles of note include Sam Raimi’s definitive horror films “The Evil Dead” and “Evil Dead 2,” Wes Anderson’s charming coming-of-age romance “Moonrise Kingdom,” the Charlize Theron-led dramedy “Tully,” Judd Apatow’s “The King of Staten Island” starring Pete Davidson, and the musical drama “Dreamgirls,” starring Jennifer Hudson in the role that earned her the Oscar.
There are also several comedy favorites expiring in March, including both “Bill and Ted’s Excellent Adventure” and “Bill and Ted’s Bogus Journey,...

A horror performer’s job is never easy, and it’s all the more challenging when the horror comes not from machetes or haunting specters, but from human elements. Anthony Hopkins is one of the finest horror actors in Hollywood, and most of his horror-oriented roles have been anchored not by supernatural elements but by the terrors of the human psyche.

He did play significant roles in films like Bram Stoker’s Dracula and The Rite, which are about paranormal/mythical entities. But, some of his most immaculate performances have come from psychological or gothic horror outings which demand a more nuanced and layered approach and needed the two-time Oscar-winning actor to improvise quite a bit and make the moments his own.

If you were being pursued by a wily killer in the woods, could you survive? Don’t look for me alive, that’s for certain; at the first sign of trouble I would be tangled up in a bush, or drown in five inches of water. Let’s not even start on the deadly wildlife, chopping wood, making a fire, or the inconvenience of being slain on holidays. That last point is a bit of a sticky one for the protagonists of Rituals (1977), a Canadian spin on Deliverance that would probably pair better with Jeff Lieberman’s Just Before Dawn (1981). And if you’ve seen that intense shocker, you’ll know you’re in good company.
Released in Canada in July, a full year before the States, Rituals received some good notices but performed poorly with audiences, and was quickly forgotten. But time has a path to redemption, especially for films that deserve that reappreciation.

"I'm a prototype - my existence is classified." Netflix has revealed a full-length official trailer for Outside the Wire, a sci-fi action thriller film from Swedish filmmaker Mikael Håfström set in the near future. Damson Idris stars as a disgraced drone pilot who is sent into a deadly militarized zone where he finds himself working for an undercover android officer, played by Anthony Mackie, and is tasked to locate a doomsday device before the insurgents do. This has the look of Edge of Tomorrow, but without the time loop. There are, however, some slick robots and various sci-fi aspects that give it a different vibe. Also starring Enzo Cilenti, Emily Beecham, Michael Kelly, and Pilou Asbæk. This looks even better than the first trailer, I'm honestly quite excited to watch this! And hopefully it's good and not just another bad January movie being dumped. Here's the second ...

Without fail, at the start of every year, there’s a lot of chatter about how January is the prime dumping ground for “bad horror,” and I gotta tell you, it really bums me out. Sure, there will always be misfires released in any given month of the year, but as a whole, I love the month of January for horror, simply because it seems like for every dud, there are a few films that really swing for the fences, and you just never know what you’re going to get. And that’s the kind of stuff that keeps me going as a horror fan.
At some point in time, January got the reputation for being a wasteland for film releases of sorts, but even back during the 2000s, we were still getting a smattering of quality genre films during that month: Walter Hill’s Supernova in 2000, The Mothman Prophecies...

Rutger Hauer, the actor who played the villainous Roy Batty in Ridley Scott’s sci-fi classic Blade Runner and so many other awesome roles in his acting career has passed away.
It’s being reported that he passed on July 19th in the Netherlands after a long illness, and he was 75 years old. According to Deadline, his funeral was held today.
Hauer was a great and super entertaining actor that has left behind a legacy of genre films that also include Ladyhawke, The Hitcher, Blind Fury, Buffy The Vampire Slayer, Sin City, Batman Begins, Hobo With a Shotgun, The Rite, and a lot more.
One of my favorite films that he starred in was Blind Fury, where he played a badass and skilled blind Vietnam vet with a sword. If you haven’t seen that movie, you’ve got to put it on your list of movies to see!

Production begins this month in Cocoa Beach, Fl. The series will premiere globally on National Geographic in 2020.
O’Donoghue’s Gordon Cooper is the youngest of the Mercury Seven, who was selected to everyone’s surprise.
