Exclusive: Ora Duplass and Chosen Jacobs (It) will lead Their Town, a YA romantic two-hander from director Katie Aselton (Mack & Rita) and Duplass Brothers Productions.

The project is a family affair, as Aselton is Duplass’ mother and is working from a script by husband Mark Duplass. Shot in Bangor, Maine, the film centers on teenagers Abby (Duplass) and Matt (Jacobs). When Abby’s boyfriend unexpectedly drops out of the high school play, she is forced to help outlier Matt step into the role opposite her. Over the course of a long night wandering their small town, the two examine their futures and unearth surprises from their past.

Supporting cast includes Daveed Diggs (Hamilton), Jeffrey Self (Search Party), Kim Shaw (You!), Leonardo Nam (Westworld), and William Atticus Parker (Atrabilious). Producers included Mark Duplass, Jay Duplass, Mel Eslyn, and Shuli Harel for Duplass Brothers Productions, as well as Aselton and Mary Budd.

Yesterday, we shared the news that Scream Factory’s line-up of February 2025 4K releases consists of Ghosts of Mars (2001), Humanoids from the Deep (1980), Galaxy of Terror (1981), and Sick (2022). Abigail Before Beatrice marks the sophmore effort from writer/director Cassie Keet. Keet’s debut feature Scream Therapy, a horror comedy that landed her a Panavision camera grant, is out today on Digital.

Hailing from Little Black Dog Entertainment, Nanu Pictures, and Exit 44 Entertainment, the film is about an isolated woman who must confront her past when a fellow former cult member reaches out with news that their leader has been released from prison early.

A Little Rock native, Keet came to make it on the heels of Scream Therapy, a horror comedy that landed her a Panavision camera grant, which will be available on demand from Indican Pictures starting June 18. In an interview with Film Comment in 2020, actress/writer/director Amy Seimetz said that she used her ample salary from making the remake of "Pet Sematary" to make her feature directorial debut "She Dies Tomorrow," a dark fable about the nature of despair. "She Dies Tomorrow" was one of the unlucky 2020 features whose potential success was hindered by Covid-19-related theater closures, resulting in a combined box office take of less than $400,000 from a release on only 24 screens.

Building a bridge between American independent filmmakers and the European market is the goal of U.S. in Progress, which is hosted each year during the American Film Festival (Aff) in Wrocław, Poland.

The event presents a carefully curated selection of roughly half a dozen American indie titles in the final stages of production to sales agents, distributors and festival programmers. This year’s edition takes place Nov. 9 – 11.

Along with offering a showcase of those films for European buyers, U.S. in Progress each year invites leading Polish post-production companies to the event, with Fixafilm, Orka Studio, Black Photon, Xanf and Soundflower Studio this year each offering a 10,000 in-kind award. That’s alongside a newly added 50,000 cash award being handed out by the Polish Film Institute, to be spent by the winning filmmaker on post-production, image, sound and/or VFX in Poland.

It’s an attempt to underscore some of the opportunities available to U.

It might seem counterintuitive to make the case for filmmaking as a career when so much about the profession can sound like a charity case. The money is in TV, and its so-called Golden Age provides golden opportunities. I may advocate for the success of original cinematic feats like “The Northman,” but will just as easily admit that “Atlanta” and “Barry” are among the most satisfying cultural achievements to come out this month.

Still, cautionary tales abound. This week, news broke that Amy Seimetz “exited” as the director of “The Idol,” the new HBO series co-produced and starring Abel Tesfaye, otherwise known as The Weeknd. As usual, there’s more to this story, and it speaks volumes about how the layers of creative control differ in TV.

I’m told that Seimetz had already directed about four episodes of the six-episode series and adapted the show to her loose, exploratory approach.

The cheeriest movie ever made about Armageddon, “How It Ends” started as a way to be productive during the pandemic and ended up as a cameo-studded lark that also manages to be a touching examination of the regrets we carry around. Writer-directors Daryl Wein and Zoe Lister-Jones keep things light on this scenic tour of Los Angeles by foot, but they also manage to bump up against some big ideas without letting their comic tone get too blue.

Though relatively unknown to most viewers, Seimetz slyly steals the star-studded film out from under the likes of Don Cheadle and Benicio del Toro with her portrayal of a housewife who gets caught up in a dangerous plot to steal a priceless document.

The Steven Soderbergh film is now streaming on HBO Max, and Seimetz is nothing short of a revelation. Utopia has acquired worldwide rights to David Gutnik’s “Materna” ahead of the film’s in-person debut at this year’s Tribeca Film Festival.

The movie looks at four women, whose lives intersect during an incident on a New York City subway. Kate Lyn Sheil (“She Dies Tomorrow”), Jade Eshete (“Billions”), Lindsay Burdge (“Black Bear”), Assol Abdullina (“First Snow”), Michael Chernus (“Orange Is the New Black”), Rory Culkin (“Castle Rock”) and Sturgill Simpson (the upcoming “Killers of the Flower Moon”) all star. Abdullina and Eshete co-wrote the screenplay with Gutnik.

Nomadland was named best feature and Chloe Zhao best director while Carey Mulligan and Riz Ahmed took lead acting honours at the virtual 2021 Film Independent Spirit Awards on Thursday night (April 22).

Searchlight Pictures’ Nomadland won four prizes on the night including Joshua James Richards for cinematography, and editing for Zhao, who was one of four women nominated in the directing category and has enjoyed a magnificent awards season.

Amazon Studios’ Sound Of Metal earned three awards for Ahmed, supporting actor Paul Raci, and first feature for Darius Marder.

“Mank” is the big leader at the 2021 Oscars with 10 nominations, but that wasn’t the case at the 36th Film Independent Spirit Awards. The nomination leader at this ceremony was Eliza Hittman’s acclaimed “Never Rarely Sometimes Always,” which the Academy shut out from the Oscars. The same goes for other beloved Spirit Award nominees like “First Cow,” “Miss Juneteenth,” and “The Assistant.” In other words, the Indie Spirit Awards were a breath of fresh air in this elongated awards season where underdog indie contenders finally get their due in the spotlight.

“Minari” also preformed strong at the Indie Spirits, earning six nominations to match its six Oscar nominations. Fellow Oscar nominees “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom” and “Nomadland” each picked up five Spirit Award nominations. Netflix was the most nominated studio with 16 nominations, followed by Focus Features with 10 and A24 with 9.
