Hans Zimmer has voiced his frustration with the Academy’s decision to disqualify his Dune: Part Two score from Oscars consideration, calling the rule behind the ruling “stupid.” Speaking on the Happy Sad Confused podcast with Josh Horowitz, the composer explained why he disagrees with the decision but does not see it as a personal slight.
“You know something? It’s not really a sore point. It’s just such a stupid point—how can it be a sore point?” Zimmer said. “I got disqualified because I was using material from the first movie in the second movie, but it’s not a sequel. It is the completion, both movies are one arc.” He questioned whether he was supposed to remove all character themes and create entirely new ones rather than expanding on the established music.

Timothée Chalamet, being one of Hollywood’s most talked-about sweethearts, really gave some of his most stellar performances this past year in pieces that turned out to be not only critically acclaimed but also commercial smash hits. For the same, he was also acknowledged by the Academy as well, earning his second Oscar nomination.

However, fans are having some second thoughts about the honor the Academy decided to give him this time around. This is because while both of his masterpieces from 2024 – i.e., Dune: Part Two and A Complete Unknown – had him giving performances good enough to make history at the Oscars, fans believe he deserved it more for the former than the latter.

No woman has even won an Oscar for best cinematography, and that’s not likely to change in 2025. Why? Because no women made the final five. But this year, the American Society of Cinematographers could be righting Oscar’s wrong.
ASC has only handed out the top prize once to a woman — Mandy Walker, who won in the feature competition in 2023 for “Elvis.” Now, for the first time since 2014, the feature competition field has expanded its nominees to seven, with Alice Brooks landing a nomination for her work on “Wicked.”
Brooks had one goal for the big screen adaptation of the hit musical, that “it would be the most beautiful love story between these two women,” she says, referring to Glinda (Ariana Grande) and Elphaba (Cynthia Erivo), who star as the famous witches of Oz.
Brooks is Jon M. Chu’s go-to Dp since their filmmaking days at the University of Southern California.

Dune: Part Two was a huge hit in 2024, earning high scores from critics (92%) and audiences (95%) on Rotten Tomatoes and making over $700 million worldwide. It continues the story from Dune: Part One, which won six Oscars.
Director Denis Villeneuve has confirmed that the next movie, Dune: Messiah, is already in the works. While people thought filming would start next year, a new report says it will actually begin this June.
Villeneuve has previously confirmed that Dune: Messiah will be his final Dune film, but that doesn’t mean Frank Herbert’s story will end on the big screen. While Dune 4 has yet to be officially greenlit, industry insider Daniel Richtman claims on his Patreon that a new director is already being considered to replace Villeneuve—though no formal decisions have been made.

After earning scores of 92% from critics and 95% from audiences on Rotten Tomatoes and grossing more than $700 million at the worldwide box office, Dune: Part Two cemented itself as one of the biggest movies of 2024 and one of the most successful sequels of all-time. The film picks up immediately after the events of Dune: Part One, which won six Academy Awards and was nominated for several more, but it isn’t the end of the story. Director Denis Villeneuve has already confirmed that work has begun on Dune: Messiah, the third installment in his epic sci-fi franchise, and while it had been rumored to be at least a year away, a new report from Deadline revealed that Dune: Messiah will reportedly begin filming this June, and not next year like previously expected.

If there's one thing you need to understand about "Dune," it's that spice is a hell of a drug. The Spice Melange, a substance found only on the planet Arrakis, is a drug so powerful that the entire universe basically revolves around it. Spice can significantly improve someone's health, triple a person's life expectancy, and can give people the ability to predict possible futures.
That last part is the most vital since the humans in the "Dune" universe have long abandoned "thinking machines," so interstellar travel has to be done by humans steering the ship the whole time instead of advanced computers. That's an impossible task, unless the person is heavily dosed up on spice their whole life to the point where they're barely recognizable as human anymore. That's what happened to the Guild Navigators, the spice-addicted space pilots that...

Frank Herbert's 1965 "Dune" novel has been a colossal inspiration since its release, encouraging countless other authors and filmmakers. However, for years, a successful movie adaptation proved very hard to get it right. Over five decades later, we have Denis Villeneuve's "Dune: Part One" and "Dune: Part Two," satisfying critics, fans, and the Academy.
While we wait for "Dune: Part Three," what's a fan to do? Well, the influences of "Dune" go far and wide, as do the cinematic influences of director Villeneuve. From the movies that were inspired by Herbert's original novel, to other films that capture something of the spirit or style of the story, and even previous attempts at tackling the material, there's a lot of cinema out there to please fans of the young, selectively bred Messiah figure Paul Atreides (Timothée Chalamet), who joins the desert-dwelling Fremen on spice planet Arrakis and quells the feud...

Hours before the 2025 Producers Guild of America Awards officially began, the 10 nominees for the Darryl F. Zanuck Award for Best Picture got together on Saturday morning for an early-bird panel at the Samuel Goldwyn Theater.
In the room were Samantha Quan for Anora, Andrew Morrison for The Brutalist, Fred Berger for A Complete Unknown, Tessa Ross for Conclave, Mary Parent for Dune: Part Two, Ali Herting for A Real Pain, Philipp Trauer for September 5, Coralie Fargeat for The Substance, and Marc Platt for Wicked. Emilia Pérez‘s Jacques Audiard, across town for the Directors Guild Awards, appeared via a pretaped clip.
“Cinema is an education,” Audiard declared at one point while speaking about the medium he loves so much. He did not address the controversy surrounding Emilia Pérez star Karla Sofía Gascón, who upended the film’s Oscar campaign after her past offensive tweets resurfaced and she subsequently botched several attempts at apology.

IMDb's Top 250 movies is a tough list for modern films to reach. It contains the best movies with the highest crowd-sourced ratings from any and all genres. Some of these are clear-cut candidates, like Adrien Brody's historical music biopic "The Pianist," which comes in 32nd on the list. Other movies are less sobering and more fantastical. For instance, all three of Peter Jackson's "The Lord of the Rings" trilogy films are in the top 12.
Sci-fi shows up a lot, too. "Interstellar" is ranked 19th. "The Matrix" is 16th. "The Empire Strikes Back" occupies the 15th spot, and "Inception" is the highest-ranked sci-fi of them all at 14th. With so many classics already on the list, it's hard for new releases to make the cut. Case in point, just three movies from 2024 were added to the list's hallowed ranks — two of which were from the sci-fi genre.

Denis Villeneuve may have been snubbed at the Oscars this year, but people love his work on Dune: Part One and Dune: Part Two, which together adapt Frank Herbert's seminal sci-fi book Dune. Next up, Villeneuve will adapt Herbert's sequel book Dune Messiah.
"I think it’ll be a great idea to do something completely different," Villeneuve told Deadline about the conclusion to his Dune trilogy. "The story takes place like 12 years after where we left the characters at the end of Part Two. Their journey, their story is different this time, and that’s why I always say that while it’s the same world it’s a new film with new circumstances.”
In the first two films, we saw Paul Atreides (Timothée Chalamet) embed himself with the desert-dwelling Fremen people of Arrakis and eventually become the new emperor of the known universe, a good gig if you can get it.

Dune: Part Two was one of the biggest movies of 2024, and although the film earned higher scores than its predecessor from both critics and audiences on Rotten Tomatoes, it received only five Oscar nominations, which is significantly less than Dune: Part One, which won six Academy Awards. Director Denis Villeneuve has confirmed that work on Dune: Messiah has already begun, and although the film is in the early stages of development — I.E. ironing out the script — things are rolling much sooner than anyone had expected after Villeneuve had previously said he wasn't sure he would ever return to Arrakis. During a press Q&a at the Saturn Awards attended by Collider's Aidan Kelley, Villeneuve spoke about what inspired him to get back in the saddle, as well as where we pick up in Dune: Messiah:...

Ashley Walters — the trailblazing British actor and star of “Top Boy” and “Missing You” — has started production on his directorial feature debut and unveiled his main cast.
“Animol” — written by Nick Love — draws on Walters’ own experiences and is described by the filmmakers as a “searing portrayal of life within the confines of a Young Offenders’ institution” and a “raw and poignant coming-of-age story highlights the power of humanity in the midst of adversity.”

"May thy knife chip and shatter." Well, sure, but history will tell you sometimes it is far easier to bring a gun to a knife fight. Why, then, in Frank Herbert's "Dune" universe and every "Dune" adaptation, are the likes of Paul Atreides, Duncan Idaho, and Feyd-Rautha Harkonnen constantly trying to stick each other with blades instead of (and pardon our language) emptying a clip in one another? The explanation is actually a sensible one if you delve into the history of the time before the Atreides family touched down on Arrakis. Due to the technological advancement in one particular (force)field, guns got taken off the table.
This all came about thanks to the creation of the Holtzman Shield, a highly convenient forcefield that covers the entire body of its wearer. At the press of a button on a bracelet or wristband, the user is safe from harm...

The 2025 Academy Award nominations are out, and they are whelming. The musical drama Emilia Pérez received the most nominations with 13, followed by Wicked and The Brutalist with 10 apiece, and then A Complete Unknown and Conclave with eight apiece.
Meanwhile, Dune: Part Two got only five nominations, down from the 10 that Dune: Part One received after it came out in 2021. This is despite the fact that Dune: Part Two was better reviewed than Part One and made more money at the box office than Part One. If you saw the movie, you know that Part Two finished adapting Frank Herbert's seminal 1965 sci-fi novel Dune, so it was no wonder that the second movie improved on the first; director Denis Villeneuve got to work with the juiciest parts of the book.
So why did Part Two receive fewer Oscar nominations? And why did Villeneuve not get a nomination for either of the films?...

Denis Villeneuve's take on Frank Herbert's Dune series has been a major success so far. The second installment, 2024's Dune: Part Two, saw the success of 2021's Dune: Part One and raised it even higher, and the Academy recognized the film's efforts.
Dune: Part Two was bigger and better than the first installment, and out-grossed the first film. It was the fifth highest-grossing movie of 2024, kicking off the year with the biggest numbers by the time of its premiere in March. The sci-fi film was officially recognized at the 97th Academy Awards by the Academy with several nominations, including one for Best Picture, but it didn't get the nomination Josh Brolin wanted.

Warner Bros. Discovery and CEO David Zaslav is on a downward spiral in terms of satisfying both fans like me and key creators. The studio earned the wrath of fans and filmmakers alike when they announced that films would be released on streaming on the same day as their theatrical release right after the pandemic under the leadership of Zaslav.
Now, the CEO’s treatment of legendary filmmaker Clint Eastwood’s supposed last film Juror #2 has been nothing short of insulting. Despite being one of the best films of the year, the Nicholas Hoult starrer was released in only 30 and odd centers with little marketing efforts from the studio. The absolute disregard for a legend like Eastwood makes me feel that Zaslav is not going to take any good creative decisions in the future.

With “Dune: Part Two,” director Denis Villeneuve did the unthinkable. He made a Hollywood sequel — really, the second part of his adaptation of Frank Herbert’s influential 1965 novel — that was more satisfying than the first. Everyone returned to the desert planet Arrakis, including Timothée Chalamet, Zendaya, Rebecca Ferguson and Josh Brolin, this time joined by new characters played by Austin Butler, Florence Pugh, Christopher Walken and Léa Seydoux.
The movie feels both bigger and more intimate than before, full of action and just as much emotion. It’s a more complicated, nuanced piece of machinery from one of our most talented filmmakers and one of the more riveting big-screen spectacles of the year.
2021’s “Dune” was nominated for 10 Academy Awards, including Best Picture and Best Adapted Screenplay, and won in six categories, including cinematography, production design, score and visual effects. What makes this accomplishment even more impressive is how many...

The Cinema Audio Society announced nominations on Tuesday, Jan. 7, honoring the best in cinematic sound mixing. Nominees for live-action motion picture sound mixing are A Complete Unknown, Deadpool & Wolverine, Dune: Part Two, Gladiator II, and Wicked. That includes four of the top five contenders in Gold Derby’s current racetrack odds for Best Sound. Deadpool & Wolverine is the outlier, ranked 10th in our odds. Missing from the Cas nominations list were the Golden Globe-leading Emilia Pérez, as well as three other films shortlisted by the Motion Picture Academy: Blitz, Alien: Romulus, and Joker: Folie à Deux.
The Cas Awards used to correlate with the Oscar for Best Sound Mixing, but that category was consolidated with Best Sound Editing for the 93rd annual awards honoring the best films of 2020. Viewers who haven't had the chance to see both Dune and Dune: Part Two now have the perfect opportunity to do just that on Netflix. Directed by visionary filmmaker Denis Villeneuve, both of the recent Dune films hit Netflix for the first time ever on January 1, 2024. Both films have been available to stream for HBO and Max subscribers but this marks a first for Dune content on Netflix. Additionally, the 1984 version of Dune directed by David Lynch, and the new prequel series Dune: Prophecy are also streaming on Max.
Dune and Dune: Part Two are collectively an adaptation of the 1965 novel Dune by Frank Herbert. The story follows Paul Atreides, played by Timothée Chalamet, who moves to the desert planet Arrakis with his father, Duke Leto Atreides (Oscar Issac), and his mother, Lady Jessica (Rebecca Ferguson) after Leto is called upon by Emperor Corrino (Christopher Walken) to oversee spice production on the "Dune" planet.

This news hints at the studios’ commitment to growing the franchise further, leveraging the success it’s already seeing.
‘Dune: Part Two’ has proven to be a monumental success at the box office. Domestically, it has garnered over $282 million, while its international earnings have surpassed $432 million. Collectively, this brings its worldwide total to an impressive $714 million.

Denis Villeneuve's Dune franchise returned with a second installment in 2024, three years after the critically acclaimed Dune: Part One. Now, fans of the films get to have a great end of the year.
As Dune: Part Two beat a series of records, and is currently the fifth highest-grossing movie of 2024, the film is now available to stream on Netflix, the platform officially confirmed on X. The blockbuster sci-fi film based on Frank Herbert's first novel in the Dune series premiered in March 2024, and it was an instant hit in a year where multiple titles struggled to get the ground running. "She’s Not John Wick": Ana de Armas Explains What Makes Her 'Ballerina' Character Unique [Exclusive]
Ballerina brings us a distinctly more graceful entry into the world of John Wick when it opens in theaters in June, and fans are undoubtedly keen to see Ana de Armas step into the assassin-filled universe as Eve Macarro. While the spin-off film looks like it will provide plenty of the high-octane action and intricate choreography that made the John Wick series iconic, de Armas is making it clear that her character isn’t just a female version of Keanu Reeves’ Baba Yaga. Alongside de Armas and Reeves, the cast of Ballerina also features Ian McShane (American Gods), Anjelica Huston (The Addams Family), Norman Reedus (The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon), Catalina Sandino Moreno (From), Gabriel Byrne (Hereditary), David Castañeda (The Umbrella Academy), Sharon Duncan-Brewster (Dune: Part One), Anne Parillaud (Nikita), and the late Lance Reddick (Bosch).

Timothée Chalamet sets a new personal Rotten Tomatoes record with his Bob Dylan movie A Complete Unknown. Chalamet does his own singing as the legendary singer-songwriter, in a James Mangold-directed film about Dylan’s early days on the East Village folk scene, up to the day he changed everything by going electric at the Newport Folk Festival. Chalamet is generating Oscar buzz for his Dylan biopic, which hits theaters on December 25.
Audiences who’ve already caught Chalamet’s acclaimed A Complete Unknown performance are also buzzing about the star by taking to Rotten Tomatoes, elevating the biopic to a 95% Popcornmeter rating (formerly known as audience score) on the review aggregator. This score ties it with the star's previous solo Popcornmeter champion, Dune: Part Two. The film has crossed the 250+ verified reviews threshold stipulated by the site for a rating to be displayed.

As Max's Dune: Prophecy continues to expand the world of the Dune franchise, several characters continue to display a wide array of superhuman abilities. While some characters in the Dune universe, like the Bene Gesserit, have displayed the ability to brainwash people and see through time, others have been known to change their bodily appearance in seconds. Dune: Prophecy even introduced a unique character who can incinerate people with only a thought.
All the different superpowers that Dune's characters have displayed only make it one of the richest, most distinctive sci-fi franchises in popular culture. One of the glaring omissions from Monday’s Golden Globe nominations was that Denis Villeneuve’s epic sequel “Dune: Part Two” was not among the eight films in the best cinematic and box office achievement category.

Denis Villeneuve confirmed Dune: Part One fulfilled a lifelong passion. He took on the challenge knowing his first Dune film could be an open-ended one-and-done.
Denis Villeneuve's Dune saga hinged on the breakout success of Dune: Part One. He knew that film would define his career; despite opportunities, he didn't rush at the prospect of helming an adaptation. "I waited many years before accepting the challenge," he told IndieWire. "I agreed to do it when I felt I was ready to bring it to the screen. And I did it with people who absolutely believed in the novel." Fans agree Frank Herbert's story is almost unfilmable, but Villeneuve proved otherwise with Dune: Part One's mass appeal and faithfulness to the source material. He recalled waiting for the studio to greenlight his follow-up installment.

Denis Villeneuve can still remember his first encounters with Frank Herbert’s “Dune” novels.
As a sci-fi obsessed teenager who couldn’t have predicted the Hollywood greatness that awaited him, Herbert’s immersive desert world of Arrakis was the perfect intersection of his many interests. In the book’s detailed descriptions of winged helicopters and spice-mining machinery, he found fuel for his lifelong love of design.
