The gig economy, and the food delivery industry in particular, are set for scrutiny in “Appetite,” an Australian short-form series that will debut next month at Canneseries, the TV festival that runs alongside the Mip-TV rights market (April 14-19).

“Appetite” is a mystery-comedy in which three penniless food delivery riders are brought together after their housemate mysteriously vanishes on the same night as a rider has a fatal roadside accident. They set out to discover the truth behind the accident and expose multinational food behemoth, Appetite.

“Appetite” was created by Mohini Herse (“Hair”) who wrote, directed and produced the series under her Fell Swoop Pictures banner. She worked with fellow writers Neilesh Verma (“Letters Home”) and Grace Tan (“Lucky Peach”), director Neil Sharma (“Heartbreak High”), and producer Karen Radzyner (“Paper Giants: The Birth of Cleo”).

Exclusive: Daniel Gillies, known for his role in The Vampire Diaries and The Originals, has signed with Buchwald for representation.

Gillies joined the CW’s The Vampire Diaries in the second season as Elijah Mikaelson, then went on to reprise the role in all five seasons of spinoff The Originals. He also starred with Katharine McPhee in Lifetime’s original movie The Lost Wife of Robert Durst and in Canadian supernatural medical drama series Saving Hope.

Gillies can currently be seen in the Netflix series Virgin River, which has been renewed for a second season.

On the film side, Gillies will star in the New Zealand-based feature directed and written by James Ashcroft, Coming Home in the Dark, based off the award-winning short story by Owen Marshall. Gillies previous work includes Spider-Man 2, Bride & Prejudice, Captivity and Broken Kingdom.

5.11 Swan Song

‘What kind of man do you want to be?’ asks literally nearly everyone of Hook in the mid season finale of Once Upon A Time.

Hook is hell-bent on getting his revenge against the crocodile, even if it means others have to suffer for it to happen. Henry and his extended family (which is actually a lot) are all marked by Carron; Storybrooke’s local ferryman to the Underworld. They’ve all got a one-way ticket and Rumple, ever the optimist, informs them that there is no changing the destination. They will all be in the Underworld by the end of the night.

Everyone gives up pretty easily and accepts their fate, which feels like uncharacteristic behaviour to facilitate the plot.

The Dark Ones gather in the year's penultimate Once Upon Of Time episode, the aptly titled Broken Heart...

5.10 Broken Heart

A lot of characters (and shippers’ hearts) were broken on this week’s episode of Once Upon A Time, aptly named Broken Heart.

We experienced our first taste of Dark Hook, and he did not disappoint. Back in his leathers and with a slightly new hairstyle, he is the image of a swoon-worthy swaggering pirate. Well, except for the whole evil bit, like when he tells Emma she will always be an orphan. He knows how to hurt.

Unlike Emma, who managed to hold off the darkness for days (weeks? Months? The passage of time is very foggy), Hook is consumed by it in a matter of hours. Besides Hook telling Emma he’s not strong enough, I think it’s also due to his circumstances.

5.8 Birth & 5.9 The Bear King

Tonight’s double episode was a perfect example of how great Once Upon A Time can be, and how, er, not great. These two episodes should never have been aired together, or more specifically, putting The Bear King right after Birth only made its weaknesses more noticeable. It was clearly a filler, and besides a few character moments, it’s hardly worth talking about in comparison to the big events of Birth, so let’s just get it out of the way quickly now.

Red! Mulan! Praise the Greek gods (that’s definitely the next mythology the show is about to tackle, right?), we finally see them back on our screens. This was the only redeeming feature of the Brave plot line.

5.7 Nimue

All hail Jane Espenson, nerd Queen and the writer of this week’s episode. From writing on Battlestar Galactica, Buffy, to Game of Thrones, Espenson knows how to write good TV, and Nimue is no exception.

This was a risky episode, with the majority of the screen time dedicated to two new characters that the audience has little connection to, but unlike the less successful Broken Kingdom that focused on Arthur and Guinevere, this time it worked. This is in part due to the excellent casting of Elliot Knight as Merlin. He may not be an old wizard with a white beard, but his poise and calmness is captivating. Then of course there is the melding of Arthurian legend that connects...

5.6 The Bear And The Bow

Well, if you love Belle and Rumple, then boy, was this the episode for you!

Belle is probably the most underused character from the main cast, so seeing her take a break from carrying around a glass jar everywhere is a welcome change. She gets her own two separate storylines this episode, one in Camelot with Merida, and the other in Storybrooke with Rumple, but let's first talk about the Brave-centric flashback.

I like Merida. I do, even with that wig, but her backstory this episode just felt unnecessary. It was completely removed from what was happening in the rest of Camelot and does nothing to bringing us closer to solving what exactly happened six weeks ago.

5.5 Dreamcatcher

Merlin is no longer a tree, thank goodness for that. It's a surprise though, as I didn’t think we were going to see his real face for a lot longer. I figured the freeing of Merlin would be part of the mid-season finale and the reason Emma cursed Camelot and brought them back to Storybrooke. Now that he is mobile, what will he do? Presumably take down Arthur, but Merlin is the only character to not show up in Storybrooke, so maybe something worse happens to him than being transformed into a tree.

Emma and Regina’s quest to de-bark Merlin is the best arc of the episode. There’s no denying the chemistry between the two; they just bounce off each other so well.

5.4 Broken Kingdom

If I were to sum up this episode with one word, it would be ‘meh’. The more interesting characters like Emma and Hook are sidelined, or completely written out (we only got one eye roll from Regina – one!), in favour of detailing the backstory of Camelot with Arthur, Guinevere and Lancelot.

This was obviously a needed episode, especially after watching Arthur convince his squire to commit suicide for Camelot, but it didn’t quite land. It was perhaps too rushed, trying to show and develop characters in too small a time frame. What suffers most is the ‘great’ love affair between Lancelot and Guinevere. There is definite affection between the two, but their kiss seemed a jump. It happened because the story needed it to,...

This week on ABC’s Once Upon a Time, we learned a whole lot about Camelot, the Arthur/Guinevere/Lancelot triangle and how the king was consumed with completing Excalibur. Our heroes meanwhile either got sandbagged by a spell or, if lucky, got to make out in a meadow.

This is the biggest week, professionally speaking, in Daniel Gillies life. When the executive producer of a film is given billing equal to or over the stars or director, it leads a viewer to two possible conclusions. One - the film has this well-known person's seal-of-approval and that it's going to be good. Or two - that they're using this person's name to sell a piece of crap. No one has seen it yet, so the jury is still out as to which these statements best describes Broken Kingdom, executive produced by Ryan Gosling, and starring Rachel Leigh Cook and Seymour Cassel. It's written, directed and co-starring Daniel Gilles (who is a dead ringer for Andrew Wilson with that beard), best known for a role on The Vampire Diaries and for his small role as astronaut John Jamison in Spider-Man 2. Yes, the astronaut from Spider-Man 2 has written and directed an independent film with interweaving storylines about four radically different people from across the world.
