It’s downright terrifying to think that Star Trek: Voyager is celebrating its 30th anniversary, which we believe makes it the perfect moment to look back at the show’s scariest episode. Though some fans might cite “Threshold,” in which Tom Paris and Captain Janeway evolved -- or, rather, devolved -- into creatures that resembled a cross between slugs, salamanders, and lizards, that was scary mostly because it was such a freaky image in an atrocious episode. If we’re talking about good, old-fashioned scary, then “The Thaw” earns that honor.
The episode debuted on April 29, 1996, during Voyager’s second season, and was directed by Marvin Rush, who served as a director of photography on The Next Generation, Deep Space Nine, Voyager, and Enterprise. Upn’s publicity department provided the media with an extensive advisory/synopsis that read, in part, “Voyager activates an automated message from members of the Kohl settlement who,...

The 1984 cult classic, This Is Spinal Tap, is getting a sequel 40 years after it debuted, and as such, its star, Michael McKean is opening up about the effort it took to make the first movie. McKean, who is currently starring on Netflixs The Diplomat, told People that it was a struggle to make This Is Spinal Tap.
The movie, which also stars Christopher Guest (Best in Show), Harry Shearer (The Simpsons), and Rob Reiner (The Wolf of Wall Street), who also directed, was a mockumentary about a band called Spinal Tap that satirized how rock bands of the time. Most of the dialogue was improvised.

Star Trek has some great horror episodes and this year on Halloween we've looked at some of the best, some of the more scary, and some that are just hard to sit through. This time, we're looking at more episodes that are hard to sit through, but for a different reason.
Horror, like all things in entertainment, is subjective. What may frighten you doesn't frighten others and vice versa. So some of the more haunting episodes may not do it for you and these are three that just didn't do it for me.
They may scare you but I found these three rather dull in that regard.
Voyager: The Thaw (2x23)
Star Trek: Voyager's "quintessential" horror episode in the eyes of many is The Thaw, the 23rd episode of season two. It sees Harry Kim and B'lanna Torres get stuck in a virtual reality world filled with computer programs that want to kill them.

Many eyes will be turned to Max when the conclusion of House of the Dragon drops on August 4. But what can fans expect after such a huge event? Not much, unfortunately, as the streaming platform's offering for the rest of August is modest; you can't constantly be hitting home runs! Still, there are a few notable new seasons of fan-favorite shows, including Industry entering its 3rd season and the Polish thriller The Thaw premiering its second season.
August also holds a potential sleeper hit, as a popular 2002 Brazil crime thriller, City of God, gets a TV series that acts as a sequel to the critically acclaimed film. And, of course, those who subscribe to the extended networks under Max will find plenty of drama on TLC, tasty eats on The Food Network, and true-crime thrills on ID. Kathryn Janeway is one of Star Trek's best characters, and like any good captain, she has many quotable moments throughout her seven seasons on Star Trek: Voyager and two on Star Trek: Prodigy. She is a fearsome commander in battle, a compassionate and curious explorer, and she is the matriarch of the family the crew of the USS Voyager becomes on their journey. Also, like all Star Trek captains, Janeway often has the best lines in a given episode.
With about 145 hours of screentime over both Voyager and Prodigy, there are a lot of options when looking for the best quotes the writers gave Kathryn Janeway. Kate Mulgrew's performance -- both in live-action and animation -- imbues the character with a natural gravitas and the wry humor last seen in William Shatner's Captain Kirk. Thus, it only seems fair to limit the selection to things the actual Janeway said.

Star Trek: Voyager's best episodes feature creepy storytelling, adding horror to the typical sci-fi themes. Voyager's unique setting in the Delta Quadrant allowed for experimenting with unsettling plotlines. Episodes like "Darkling," "The Thaw," and "Scientific Method" showcase exceptionally creepy storytelling.
Some of Star Trek: Voyager's best episodes rely on creepy or unsettling storytelling. Like many of its sister Star Trek TV shows, Voyager employed a variety of storytelling styles to make its episodes interesting. The Star Trek franchise is known to cover a wide range of genres under the guise of science fiction, and episodes have ranged from comedic to dramatic and everything in between. While the franchise does both comedy and drama very well, a subset that it only sometimes dives into are episodes that rely on horror, suspense, or just generally creepy storytelling.

"Star Trek: Voyager" debuted on January 16, 1995, and was the first series on a brand-new Paramount-owned network, the Upn. Like the network, "Voyager" struggled quite a bit, famously floundering in the ratings and unable to secure the kind of cultural cache held by "Star Trek: The Next Generation," a series that had gone off the air in 1994. The premise was promising enough: a brand-new, super-advanced Starfleet vessel, the U.S.S. Voyager, was whisked clear across the galaxy by an ultra-powerful alien being searching for a mate. When the alien died, the Voyager was stranded in the Delta Quadrant, some 75 years away from Earth. Captain Janeway (Kate Mulgrew) would guide her crew back home, using limited resources and unable to call Earth for backup.

The following contains spoilers from Star Trek: Lower Decks, Season 4, Episode 1 "Twovix," now streaming on Paramount+.
After visiting the original Enterprise in the Strange New Worlds crossover episode, the Season 4 premiere of Lower Decks celebrates another Star Trek series. In the episode, the crew is tasked with piloting the USS Voyager first to Earth, where it will land and spend time in orbit before it ends up at the Fleet Museum. While every episode of Lower Decks is heavy with references to other shows, this one is chock-full of Voyager Easter eggs.
Perhaps the most obvious and diligent references are the recreation of the ship and its locations. From the deflector to the nacelles, the animated model of Voyager looks just like the "real thing" seen in the episodes. Star Trek episodes explore dark themes and moral dilemmas, showcasing the resilience and humanity of Starfleet officers. Different series like Deep Space Nine, Enterprise, and Discovery feature devastating conflicts and all-out wars, while others have stand-alone episodes with impactful storylines. From mind games in simulations to haunting experiences with clowns, Star Trek does not shy away from exploring the darkness within its universe.
Star Trek may take place in a utopian-like future, but the characters still face their fair share of darkness. Whether they involve impossible war-time decisions or terrifying mind games, several Star Trek episodes contain incredibly dark themes and moral dilemmas. Starfleet officers often face off against the unknown, which can lead them to some surprisingly dark places. Situations do not always play out as planned, and conflicts become inevitable with so many different civilizations and cultures involved.

The Earth-Romulan War was one of the earliest major conflicts in the Star Trek timeline, but it had an impact that lasted for centuries in the story. Taking place during the events of Star Trek: Enterprise, the Earth-Romulan War broke out not long after Earth started to become a major player in the Alpha Quadrant, and it was the defining moment of the planet's first incursions into interstellar politics. Though the actual war was rather brief, the outcomes were felt for centuries after fighting officially ended, and it was one of the few conflicts that never truly ended between the belligerent parties.
Unlike other early scrapes that Earth ships found themselves in during the 2100s, the Earth-Romulan War was waged between a combatant seeking peace and one who would never surrender. While all wars in the Star Trek timeline were abhorrent in their own ways, the battles with the Romulans...

Director Lee Cronin is riding high off the great reviews he’s getting for Evil Dead Rise, and now it looks like he’s got another horror flick set to go at New Line, with them setting up another movie for the director called The Thaw. According to THR, the film is “set years after the polar ice caps have melted and the sea levels have risen, the story centers on a group of survivors at sea searching for a new home. Their prayers are answered with the discovery of an inhabitable town until, that is, they encounter a new nightmare living just below the water’s surface.” The writer, Jeremy Passmore, has a writing credit on New Line’s San Andreas, as well as the Red Dawn remake from 2012.
Cronin’s hiring proves that WB, which owns New Line, is high on the director following his turn at the helm of Evil Dead Rise.

The cast of the Apple TV Plus original movie Tetris features familiar actors, including Taron Egerton and Toby Jones, in its exploration of an amusing chapter in gaming history. The biographical drama depicts the efforts of creator Alexey Pajitnov and Dutch businessman Henk Rogers to manage the licensing of the revolutionary puzzle game of the same name. Tetris also puts the spotlight on diverse figures involved in the story, ranging from the founder of Nintendo to a Soviet political leader.
The dialogue-driven clashes over Tetris and its different versions make the movie comparable to other industry-focused biopics, like The Social Network and The Big Short. Taron Egerton told GQ that Tetris is “more Social Network than Lego Movie." So, while Pixels already marked the big-screen debut of the video game's iconic visuals, the Apple TV Plus movie Tetris treats fans of the game to the dramatic story behind its creation and success.
