In 2002, Dutch producer Nicolay shared his beats on the Okayplayer message board. Phonte, one half of the prolific rap duo Little Brother, was impressed with what he heard and reached out to collaborate. Their intercontinental alliance resulted in Connected, the debut album from their group Foreign Exchange, which celebrated its 20th anniversary last weekend. The 17-song album is lauded as one of the first prominent examples of an Mc singing as well as exploring multiple genres on a singular project. While new school hip-hop fans credit Kanye’s 808s & Heartbreaks...

For some, life is a series of chance meetings with historical consequences. Little Brother, the trio comprised of rapper/singer Phonte, rapper Big Pooh, and (formerly) producer 9th Wonder met on the campus of North Carolina Central University and went on to craft one of rap’s most beloved catalogs. Their story was chronicled in the recently released documentary, May The Lord Watch, currently available on YouTube. The film was crafted by Travis “Yoh” Phillips and Holland “vacayvacayvacay” Gallagher of documentary studio Rap Portraits — whom Phonte connected after meeting Gallagher...

Superstar Shah Rukh Khan was recently summoned by the Enforcement Directorate (Ed) over an issue pertaining to Foreign Exchange Management Act (Fema) violation case that can be traced back to 2008. The actor was questioned for over three hours on the matter that was related to the sale of Kolkata Knight Riders (Kkr) shares during the Ipl (Indian Premiere League). In 2008, Shah Rukh Khan was alleged of selling shares of his Ipl team, Kkr at a way low price compared to the one fixed by the Securities and Exchange Board of India (Sebi) to the company Sea Island Investments Ltd, based in Mauritius and owned by actress Juhi Chawla's husband Mr. Jay Mehta. Readers may be aware that Kkr is co-owned by Shah Rukh Khan's company Red Chillies along with his actress best friend Juhi Chawla. A warm but never schmaltzy, perfectly formed family sitcom with no weak links in its cast, here's why you should watch The Middle...
Family sitcoms aren’t exactly thin on the ground, so finding a new spin on the format is always going to take some work. Originally intended as a vehicle for Ricki Lake, The Middle is a case in point. After several years in development, it finally aired in autumn 2009 with a new lead: Patricia Heaton, one of the stars of hugely popular show Everybody Loves Raymond. Writers Eileen Heisler and DeAnn Heline had previously been responsible for Roseanne, so the track records of all involved boded well for the series’ prospects. Six seasons later – with a seventh confirmed in May – expectations have well and truly been proved correct.

Spoiler alert, but Birdman or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance) was, in fact, not my favorite film of the year. I figured I should just get that out of the way at the start for those of you who feared I might have the same #1 film as Brad and Mike, both of whom listed Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu's latest as their favorite film from 2014. Don't get me wrong, I really liked Birdman, but in a surprise to even myself, it didn't make my list, which I think you can pretty much chalk up to the surprisingly good year 2014 wound up being. I was certainly among the scoffers last fall about it being a bit of down year, and just a month or so ago I was of the opinion 2014 offered a lot of films to like, but very few to love. After going through and finalizing my list, I'd like to retract that statement.

Everybody has their top ten trailer and poster round-ups, their year-end articles that rate Hollywood’s offerings in neat, succinct – completely biased – lists. But what happens to those throwaway moments that defy categorization?
Maybe Quicksilver’s “Time in a Bottle” sequence from X-Men: Days of Future Past should be getting more attention this year, but not too many people have a best musical moments list (but we do, and it’s good). MaybeGuardians of the Galaxy’s Rocket Racoon doesn’t quite make the top ten characters of the year, but surely the foul-mouthed animal deserves some recognition!
And then there’s the ridiculous stuff; The “I just want to talk about why Peeta likes bread so much” kind of stuff.
Our Best of the Rest list aims to find those thrown away gems and shine light on their greatness (or lack thereof).
Let's get started.

On the heels of a successful screening in New York at the Urbanworld Film Festival, The End Again, a short film about a romantic breakup, has been released online. The End Again is an emphatic reflective portrait of a couple’s joys and falls at the close of their six-year relationship that stars Columbus Short, ("Scandal") opposite his wife, Tanee McCall-Short ("The Losers"). Set to a soundtrack from R&B group The Foreign Exchange, the contemporary romantic drama illustrates the sometimes complex yet nuanced struggles that often accompany breakups as Jane Salmon (McCall-Short) and Joe Maxwell (Short) attempt to reconcile their personal battles of conscience...

You might have thought, from the hilarious closing credits of this summer's "22 Jump Street"—which ran through over twenty fictional sequels to the movie, from "Foreign Exchange" to "Mariachi School"—that filmmakers Phil Lord and Chris Miller had totally blown up the franchise. They mock the endless studio sequel factories, and even the idea of re-casting when contracts expire. Indeed, the sequel initially ended, per Buzzfeed, with the two quitting the force, with the sequel jokes a last-minute addition, put together only weeks before the film hit theaters. But that was before the film was a giant, giant hit. On only a $50 million budget, the film (which once again stars Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum) made over $190 million domestically, only a touch behind "Godzilla," "Dawn Of The Planet Of the Apes," and even Sony's "The Amazing Spider-Man 2," all of which cost three-to-four times as much to produce. And so it's with.

While the credits of 22 Jump Street roll, the audience is shown posters and snippets of over 20 fake Jump sequels: ridiculous movies like 27 Jump Street: Culinary School and 34 Jump Street: Return of the Ghost. When Jesse David Fox spoke to the directors, Phil Lord and Chris Miller, earlier in the week, Miller said they “wanted one final [homage] to sequels.” He added, “We found that the audience wanted to feel like those guys were gonna stay together.” He was correct. The result is really satisfying and easily one of the film’s funniest moments. So, without further ado — and with the requisite credit spoiler warning (if that's a thing?) — here are all the fake sequels: 23 Jump Street: Medical School 24 Jump Street: Foreign Exchange 25 Jump Street: Semester at Sea 26 Jump Street: Arts School 27 Jump Street: Culinary School 28 Jump Street: Veterinary School 29...

Artists and entertainers coming in from overseas have always had to face stringent laws at the airport. The latest to be detained was singer Mika, who was arrested at the Mumbai airport yesterday by the Customs department. Mika who was returning from Bangkok via a private airline at 7.30pm was reportedly carrying currency of Rs. 3 lakh and $12,000 (worth Rs. 6.36 lakh) in his person.
The arrest was made as under the Foreign Exchange Management Act (Fema) regulations, any traveler arriving in India with more than Rs 7,500 and Us $5,000 has to declare it to the authorities. However, Mika reportedly didn't make that declaration despite carrying currency more than the permissible limit.
The singer was stopped by the Air Intelligence Unit batch upon his arrival, on inspection apart from the currency, the officials also found two liquor bottles of foreign brand and other branded items exceeding duty-free limit.

In the world's never-ending quest to confuse us as much as possible, two new horror flicks are under way with the same title, Safari. The good news? They couldn't be more different. Read on for the details regarding both of them.
Last week Bloody Disgusting dropped the news that Safari, a found-footage thriller, was gearing up to start shooting on October 15th in Johannesburg, South Africa. Directed by Academy Award nominee Darrell Roodt (Little One, Yesterday) and written by Dark Was The Night scribe Tyler Hisel, the pedigree is right for this one to be a cut above.
That film “centers on a band of American tourists, stranded and hunted in the heart of the South African wilderness. Art seems to imitate life for Patricia Heaton, who came on 'The View' (weekdays, syndicated on ABC) to talk about her show 'The Middle.' Barbara Walters pointed out that like her character Frankie, Heaton is a busy working mother: While Frankie has three kids, Heaton is a mother to four boys.
Stories from Heaton's own family life often end up on the show. The 'Foreign Exchange' episode, where a student from Japan stayed with the Hecks, was based on an experience she had. "I brought our Japanese student to the set ... and he was enamored with Sue Heck, of course, but he never said a word in the ten days he stayed with us," Heaton said.

5) Matthew A. CherryI like this brother's style. He shoots. And shoots. And shoots. Music videos. Shorts. And coming soon - his first feature. He works with open arms. Embracing fellow filmmakers. Embracing social media. Embracing the energy currently brewing around the black indie film aesthetic. Here's his latest video which just dropped this week for Foreign Exchange. The guy makes, like, a video a week, I swear. I love it. Work!
4) Black Swan TheoryThis is a short film that I dig a lot for a couple of reasons. First: because this fierce black woman filmmaker smashed it.

For those unfamiliar with the story, an acting union's threatened (but now resolved) boycott has led Warner Bros. to consider alternatives for their filming locations, citing the fact that the country can not be considered a stable environment for the production. In turn, this led to the protests and the intervention of Prime Minister John Key, who entered into talks with Warner.
