Actress/director Rebecca Rinehart said this project came together after she and her writer sister Diane Fraker dropped out of another film they were involved in when they had major creative differences with the director. But they had gotten far enough into the process (Rinehart was helping produce and raise funding too) to realize they could produce their own film. Her sister had already come up with the concept of The Embalmers and they would talk about it on long drives to horror conventions, but never put anything on paper until the other project fell through. They had already been reaching out to actors to appear in the other film, so they invited them to join this project instead.
Shot the opening of the film as a proof of concept at the end of February 2020 to use for a crowdfunding campaign.
