Well, this is lousy timing. Several horror movies, including "The Exorcist," "Night of the Living Dead," and "Interview with the Vampire" are leaving Netflix on October 1, right before Halloween.

Also leaving October 1, some spooky TV titles, including "The Dead Files."

Academy Award-nominated actors Annette Bening and Ed Harris, and Academy Award-winner Robin Williams will be joined by Amy Brenneman and Jess Weixler in Arie Posin.s romantic drama Look Of Love. Posin is directing the project that he co-wrote with scribe Matthew McDuffie. Mockingbird Pictures. Julie Lynn and Bonnie Curtis are producers. Principal photography begins shooting in Los Angeles on April 9.

The majority of financing for the project was found in Dallas, Texas, where Curtis and Lynn previously sourced funds for the critically acclaimed Albert Nobbs, which earned three Academy Award nominations this past season including Best Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role for Glenn Close.

The 11th Tribeca Film Festival is only a few weeks away, and will feature plenty of indie movies vying for audience attention and studio distribution, so credit newcomer director Jay Gammill and Film Market for getting the word out early on their quirky comedy "Free Samples." The film stars Jess Weixler — known most notably for staging a war on penises in Mitchell Lichtenstein's 2007 horror-comedy "Teeth" — as a Stanford law-school dropout who gets stuck working in an ice cream truck for a day and is distracted by every goofy weirdo in town while she tries to figure out what to do with her life. Among those distractions is Jason Ritter (who also worked with Weixler in the 2009 romantic drama "Peter and Vandy") and Jesse Eisenberg, who could be Weixler's love interest in the movie (or could just appear in a handful of scenes).

Jonny Lee Miller has landed the lead role of Sherlock Holmes in the CBS drama pilot Elementary.

The potential series is a modern take on the cases of the famed detective, with the Eli Stone star stepping into the literary figure’s shoes, Deadline reports. Another key change: Sherlock now lives in New York City.

It was announced last year that Anton Corbijn’s follow up to the excellent Joy Division film, Control, would be entitled The American and would star George Clooney as an assassin who vows to do one last job, and today the first location images from the film have emerged.

A slow week for DVDs but one with a few notable selections. Perhaps one the most notable is the release (finally) of Nicolas Winding Refn’s Bronson (review, amazon), a look at Britain’s most famous (or infamous) inmate.

One of quietearth’s favourites of the year (number 2 on his list to be exact) is Erik Poppe’s Troubled Water (review, amazon) is also hitting the ground running this week.

On the relationship side of things, and with lots of time before Valentine’s Day, we’ve got Jay Dipietro’s Peter and Vandy (clips, amazon), a love story told out of order and starring Jason Ritter while those looking for something a little heftier, there’s Travis Betz’s Lo (review, amazon), a story of love, mystery and demons.

Almost every year, it seems there are complaints about it being a bad year for women's roles. For some reason, that buzz is especially loud for 2009, as critics are making their year-end lists and finding the women's categories falling short. At which point, I have to feel some empathy for actors like Jess Weixler—who poured her heart and soul into the small indie romance "Peter and Vandy"—and it makes me wonder what more critics could want. Weixler commands the screen in the film, which focuses almost entirely on the two title characters. She's in every scene, playing a range of emotions, from repressed anger to deep infatuation. It's a terrific role and she doesn't miss a beat. Yet her name doesn't appear on any year-end critic's lists.The same can be said of Sophie Okonedo, a previous Oscar nominee for "Hotel Rwanda," who earned raves for her turn...

After success as a playwright, Dipietro is also at Sundance launching a new chapter in his creative career. An off-Broadway hit that enjoyed a four-month run at New York's Paradise Theater Company in 2002, Dipietro adapts his play Peter and Vandy for his first outing as a feature filmmaker. Through a series of flashbacks, twenty-something New Yorkers Peter (Jason Ritter) and Vandy (Jess Weixler) go out on dates, move in together, part ways and reunite with the memories of good times as well as heartbreak behind them. The romance genre is a crowded field but "Peter and Vandy" separates itself from the pack by showing the unhappy moments as much as the good times. Dipietro finds a sofa near the front entrance of the Hollywood Life storefront, one large enough for Weixler, Ritter and himself. I sit atop a nearby case of Heineken beer. We make do.

Peter and Vandy, a virtual two-hander starring Jason Ritter and Jess Weixler as the titular couple, is the story of a long-term relationship, and all that entails: its ups and downs, from sweet romance to blowout flights over making a peanut-butter-and-jelly sandwich. Adapted from a 2002 play from writer/director Jay Dipietro, the film also shares a certain trick with another Sundance 2009 alum, 500 Days of Summer, as the story is told out of order. But the two films differ in their approach; 500 Days of Summer shows Tom (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) growing up and figuring out the mysteries of love, whereas the New York-set Peter and Vandy is very much about both characters, the push-and-pull of their relationship, and how goofy architect Peter is changed by spiky art gallerista Vandy and vice versa. I love when I get excited about a film solely for the actors involved. It doesn’t matter what the film is about, as long as actors I like are on screen, I can enjoy it. An Education started out that way, but by the time the credits scrolled upwards, I loved the film as a whole. Peter Sarsgaard (Shattered Glass, Jarhead) and Carey Mulligan (Pride Prejudice, Public Enemies) were the actors I was excited to see. When I first heard about this film, I was only presented with the idea that it is a “love story told out of order” or “it’s not a love story, it’s a story about love.” Calm down everyone, I know what you’re thinking. Let me get this out of the way immediately and say that (500) Days of Summer is a much better film than Peter and Vandy. With that said, Peter and Vandy is very good little movie within itself and, at the recommendation of this reviewer, it should be seen if you get the chance to.

Given that they premiered alongside each other at Sundance, Jay Dipietro’s temporally scrambled romance Peter and Vandy is doomed to languish in the shadow of (500) Days of Summer, like a younger sibling whose teachers constantly remind him what a good student his brother was. But Dipietro’s variation on a similar theme doesn’t entirely suffer in comparison. Ritter's finally overcome his status as "the son of John Ritter" to bloom into an indie leading man in his own right, while Weixler recently burst onto the scene with attention-getting performances in Teeth and Alexander the Last. A press release from Focus Features has announced that shooting has begun in Italy on The American: Anton Corbijn's second film as director (after the brilliant Control), starring George Clooney.It's based on Martin Booth's 2005 novel A Very Private Gentleman: a languid, introspective thriller about an ageing manufacturer of intricate and unusual bespoke weapons, hiding out in the Italian Appenines, posing as a painter of butterflies when his past comes back to haunt him. The screenplay has been adapted by Roland's son Rowan Joffe (co-writer of 28 Weeks Later and the upcoming new version of Brighton Rock). Grant Heslov, who was with Clooney for Goodnight and Good Luck and The Men Who Stare At Goats, is among the producers. Costume and production design is by the Slumdog Millionaire team of Suttirat Larlarb and Mark Digby, and Corbijn's editor and cinematographer from Control, Martin Ruhe and Andrew Hulme, are also on board.

Clooney and director Anton Corbijn (’Control’) have begun filming on the new thriller ‘The American’ in Italy. It looks like the 25th annual Sundance Film Festival is borrowing the late Harvey Milk's famous line: You gotta give 'em hope.

Despite the war-weary, economically ravaged state of the nation and the industry, the Sundance Institute eagerly announced the 2009 competition lineup Wednesday. And while it certainly maintains a somber quotient, the festival roster includes enough fresh takes on old genres (think romance, sci-fi and politics) to satisfy moviegoers and industry players looking for some warmth during the snowy 11-day event.

At least that's how fest organizers Geoffrey Gilmore, Sundance's longtime director, and John Cooper, its programming director, choose to see it.

"What you might have expected is that the festival would be really reflective right now of a very dark time, and it's not really true," said Gilmore, in his 19th year overseeing the fest. "We haven't seen the numbers drop, we haven't seen productions severely impacted yet by these factors,...

Five months after he turned in his "Law & Order" badge, Jesse L. Martin is returning to NBC and Universal Media Studios with a role in "The Philanthropist."

After a lengthy courtship by the network, Martin is in negotiations to co-star on the midseason drama series opposite James Purefoy.

"Philanthropist" centers on Teddy Rist (Purefoy), a renegade billionaire who uses his wealth, connections and power to help people in need around the world. Martin would play Philip Maidstone, Teddy's business partner and lifelong friend.

Production on the series -- whose original 13-episode order has been reduced by several segments, as it is not expected to launch until March-April -- is slated to begin shortly. It will be based in London through NBC Universal's international TV production unit, with filming set for South Africa and the Czech Republic.
