The latest iteration of Pretty Cure, Soaring Sky! Pretty Cure, is currently receiving a lot of praise for its introduction of a male Cure to the team. However, Pretty Cure isn't the first shojo magical-girl anime to feature a magical boy. Shugo Chara!, which was released more than a decade earlier, features one of the earliest and most straightforward examples of magical boys in anime.
Shugo Chara! started out as a manga by the manga-ka duo Peach-Pit (of Rozen Maiden fame) that was published in the shojo magazine Nakayoshi from 2006 to 2010. It was later adapted into an anime that ran from 2007-2010, with a total of 127 episodes. While it didn't turn into a full-fledged franchise like Pretty Cure, it was still relatively popular, as shown by its anime adaptation's incredibly long run. So how did Shugo Chara! handle the subject of magical boys?
