Henry Cavill's Worst Movie, According To Rotten Tomatoes
Image
Rotten Tomatoes is an imperfect system. The hugely popular review aggregate website is an oft-misused tool that tries to boil complicated opinions down to whether a film is "good" or "bad." It's also raised viewer expectations to an unhealthy degree; if a movie gets an 80% critical score, for example, plenty of people might choose not to watch it or tell others they "heard it was bad," even though that score ostensibly means that 4 out of 5 critics recommend the title. At its best, the site is an essential resource and a place where pop culture fans can go to find interesting writing and varied opinions on all sorts of visual art. At worst, though, Rotten Tomatoes boils years of artistic labor down to a number.

With all that in mind, it's admittedly pretty hard to argue against a 0% Rotten Tomatoes score. It's the cinematic equivalent of flatlining, and it's also the score given to "Hellraiser: Hellworld,...

Why Stieg Larsson's Lisbeth Salander Was Played By 3 Different Actresses In 9 Years
Image
Stieg Larsson's The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo was first published in 2005 and translated from Swedish into English in 2008, and although the book was the first story to feature the character of Lisbeth Salander, live-action adaptations of Larsson's iconic debut novel and the following sequels have sporadically replaced the leading lady. The original book trilogy proved so successful that other authors have been tasked with adding to the source material's chronology after Larsson's untimely death in 2004. So, while he may not have been alive to see what a huge success his story became, his legacy is inarguable.

While the books that feature Lisbeth Salander take place in a simple and linear fashion, the Lisbeth Salander movies aren't quite as straightforward. The three actresses who have played the character so far all appear in different projects that weren't released that far apart from each other. While the movies could be...

14 Seminal American Movies That Are Actually Remakes of Foreign Films
Image
I once thought the European mind couldn’t comprehend Dinner for Schmucks. I now know how wrong I was.

14 ‘Dinner for Schmucks’ (2010)

The 1998 French film Le Dîner de Cons (“dinner of fools”) won a ton of awards and sparked three different Indian adaptations: 2007’s Hindi-language Bheja Fry, 2008’s Kannada-language Mr. Garagasa and 2010’s Malayalam-language April Fool. The original film is based on a 1999 French play of the same name. When it was still a stage production, the title was often translated in English as The Prat’s Dinner or The Cunt’s Dinner.

13 ‘The Last House on the Left’ (2009)

The 2009 Wes Craven film is a remake of a 1972 Wes Craven film, which in turn was based on the 1960 Swedish film Jungfrukällan (“the virgin spring”). That film was actually based on a 13th-century Scandinavian ballad, “Töres döttrar i Wänge,” a real mindfreak about the tragic origin of a local Swedish church.

"Interesting Question": The X-Files' David Duchovny Addresses Potential Mulder Return
Image
David Duchovny still loves his X-Files character and is open to a revival, but doesn't spend much time pondering its direction. A revival without both Duchovny and Anderson would be difficult, as their dynamic is what made the show compelling. There is a chance for a reboot of The X-Files, with Duchovny wishing luck to the actors involved.

David Duchovny is still thinking about his character's future in The X-Files. Duchovny played Fox Mulder, the FBI Special Agent who served alongside Gillian Anderson's Dana Scully. The two navigated the world of the supernatural in their original show from 1992 to 2003, as well as in two movies and a series revival from 2016 to 2018. The show was so popular that it spawned two spin-offs, Millenium and The Lone Gunmen. The only major issue for the series was with behind-the-scenes tension between Duchovny and Anderson.

It has been six years since the revival ended,...

The Scariest Godzilla Villains, Ranked
Image
Godzilla is one of the most iconic cinematic monsters of all time. Since its inception back in the 1950s, the franchise has churned out dozens of movies that have helped create Godzilla's vast universe. The franchise's approach to "kaiju" has birthed countless monsters that Godzilla has gone up against over the decades. Despite Godzilla being a formidable and scary creature itself, some of the foes it has fought would give even the prehistoric creature tough competition both in ability and appearance.

When it comes to ranking scary monsters, the Godzilla franchise has an impressive library ranging from radiation-mutated creatures to man-made abominations that would send chills down the viewers' spines. Even though some of these kaiju or monsters may not be up to par with Godzilla's god-like powers, their aura and appearance make them a source of curiosity and fear for the fans. Now, with the release of Godzilla Minus One...

Interview With Julian Pham: The Genesis of This Film Came From a Photo, so It Was a Lot of Building This Plane As It Flew.
Image
One of the exciting parts to themed-film festivals is the discovery of new, local voices, like that of Julian Pham. Pham's first feature, “Owl,” speaks a story that is both Oakland-specific and universal to parent-child relationships. The narrative film follows locksmith Jean Kaneko (Marica Petrey), who returns home to take care of her ailing father. Coming home is not easy, however. As memories of her absent mother well up, her father's stubbornness ignite arguments, and her childhood friendships become entangled, she finds herself consistently frustrated – until she stumbles upon a windfall that could change all of their lives forever.

We spoke to director Julian Pham over Zoom in the advent of his world premiere at CAAMFest 2024. We talked about how to make a community out of nothing and marinating in open-ended relationships.

What inspired “Owl”?

Julian Pham: Marica, the lead actor and producer, and I were hanging out at this outdoor bar.

The Correct Order To Watch The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo's Millennium Trilogy
Image
Stieg Larsson's Millennium Trilogy was a huge deal in the publishing world. The books kicked off with "The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo". When a book series generates as much heat as this one, the movies come calling. Sure enough, the entire original trilogy was adapted into three films in Sweden. Later, Hollywood took a stab at it, too, with English-language adaptations, but we'll get to those later. First, though, let's talk about the original trilogy and the correct order to watch it.

Read more: Here's Why Movie Dialogue Has Gotten More Difficult To Understand (And Three Ways To Fix It)

The Correct Order To Watch The Millennium Trilogy

The original trilogy kicks off with 2009's "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo," starring Michael Nyqvist as reporter Mikael Blomkvist and Noomi Rapace as troubled goth hacker Lisbeth Salander. The two end up working together to solve the mystery of...

It was just one film in the year 1971 that sealed the fate of two superstars of this country. A film that starred two superstars and a film that marked the start of the decline of one’s stardom and the rise of the other’s stardom. The film was Anand and the stars were Rajesh Khanna & Amitabh Bachchan!

When Amitabh Bachchan was climbing the ladder of success, he signed Hrishikesh Mukherjee’s Anand. During the making of the film, many people warned the Aradhna superstar to be very alert to the man who was about to turn into an angry young man.

Rajesh Khanna did not pay heed to anyone’s warnings, but later, Anand saw the rise and rise of Amitabh Bachchan despite playing a quiet doctor and Khanna receiving much love for his role as a dying cancer patient.

Bollywood and its golden statements lay in the era of the 90s. Not because the stars were difficult to reach but only because whatever they said was less fabricated and filtered since there was no constant moral policing or calling out. Interviews were unabashedly real, and one such interview was when Parveen Babi opened up about Amitabh Bachchan and had some thoughts about his popularity.

An old video has cropped up on the internet where the Shaan actress was seen talking about her co-star in many films. The duo has worked together in many films, including Kaalia, Amar Akbar Anthony, Namak Halaal, Kaala Sona, Kranti, and Kala Patthar.

For the unversed, Parveen Babi died struggling with mental health after she was diagnosed with Schizophrenia. It was rumored that she used to believe that Amitabh Bachchan would kill her.

“For me, I really go by the director. I learned that pretty early,” the Women Talking and Girl With a Dragon Tattoo actor said Friday when explaining how she ended up starring in director Alonso Ruizpalacios’ English-language debut, La Cocina, which bowed at the Berlin Film Festival on Friday.

The two-time Oscar nominee plays a waitress at a high-stress Manhattan restaurant where she strikes up a relationship with a backroom cook, played by Raúl Briones. “I had some bad experiences as an actor,” Mara continued.

Box Office: ‘Expendables 4’ Lands Only $3.2M Friday on Way to Franchise Worst Opening
Image
Lionsgate and Millenium’s Expendables 4 has hit theaters with $3.2 million in Friday grosses as the movie heads for a franchise-low opening. Friday’s tally includes $750,000 in Thursday evening previews.

The $100 million budgeted film, financed by Millenium, had been looking to open in the $15 million range, with some estimates on the high end placing it closer to $17 million. But early returns, however, now show it coming in around $8 million. The Nun II could even beat it.

Sylvester Stallone and Jason Statham return to the blow-em-up franchise, along with alumni Dolph Lundgren and Randy Couture. The official synopsis for the film reads: “The Expendables are the world’s last line of defense and the team that gets called when all other options are off the table. But new team members with new styles and tactics are going to give ‘new blood’ a whole new meaning.” Megan Fox, 50 Cent, Tony Jaa,...

1 X-Files Cameo Hides A Funnier Joke Than You Realize
Image
One cameo buried in The X-Files eclectic past hints at a funnier joke than most realize. The sprawling TV show was never afraid to play around with its format. While it never truly strayed from its mysterious, government thriller roots, it often peppered the show with comedy and absurdist humor. Showrunner Chris Carter even gave audiences several episodes filmed with a gimmick at its core, including an episode framed through the TV show Cops called X-Cops. This reaches its peak in a very meta episode where Agents Fox Mulder (David Duchovny) and Dana Scully (Gillian Anderson) meet two actors playing them in an in-universe adaptation of their lives.

During “Hollywood A.D.” while investigating an X-File, Mulder and Scully are shadowed by a Hollywood producer called Wayne Federman, who is planning to make a film about the FBI. The self-referential episode was directed by Duchovny and culminated in the...

International Disruptors: Federation Entertainment’s Pascal Breton & Lionel Uzan Talk Global Ambitions & How Empowering Their New Breed Of Indie Studios Is A Key Driver To Company’s Success
Image
Welcome to Deadline’s International Disruptors, a feature where we’ll shine a spotlight on key executives and companies outside of the U.S. shaking up the offshore marketplace. This week, we take a deep dive into Federation Entertainment, the production-sales studio behind Canal Plus’ hit series The Bureau and Netflix Italian hit Baby. Founder Pascal Breton and CEO Lionel Uzan give us the lowdown on the company’s ambitions and why now is the perfect time to be in the game of creating pan-European content.

When French producer Pascal Breton launched Federation Entertainment in 2014, the veteran television executive had a hunch that the international production and distribution landscape was on the precipice of great change. The year before, he stepped down as CEO of Marathon Entertainment after 23 years, because the old model “was no longer exciting for producers.” Federation, he vowed, would anticipate market changes and respond accordingly with...

Daniel Craig and Rooney Mara in Millénium : Les Hommes qui n'aimaient pas les femmes (2011)
Girl With the Dragon Tattoo TV Series in the Works at Amazon
Daniel Craig and Rooney Mara in Millénium : Les Hommes qui n'aimaient pas les femmes (2011)
The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo lives!

Amazon is looking to revive the franchise with a TV series.

Once again, the project, would have Lisbeth Salander, the hacker character at the wheel of Stieg Larsson's best-selling Millenium trilogy of crime novels.

However, the project comes with a major caveat:

The character would be placed in today's world, with a brand new setting, new characters, and a storyline that is not adapted from the original work.

This is undoubtedly an attempt to lure in new viewers to the franchise, as opposed to continuing the storylines from the movies.

Amazon Studios and Left Bank Pictures are working with Sony Pictures TV on the project. Sony released the 2011 film based on The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo, which boasted a cast that included Rooney Mara in the titular role, and Daniel Craig.

No writer has been attached to the project, but it...

Lisbeth Salander TV Show Will Bring The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo to Amazon
Image
Lisbeth Salander is making a comeback, this time on the small screen. It has been revealed that Amazon is developing a The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo TV show. Details are currently slim, as it seems like the project is in the early stages of development. It will, however, be taking the iconic character into a new setting to tell a new story with different characters. It seems this will not be treading on the same ground as the adaptations we've seen of the Millenium book series previously.

According to a new report, the new Amazon series will not be a sequel or continuation of the books or movies that have been produced up to this point. Instead, their version of The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo will be taking Lisbeth Salander and doing something different. Specific plot details have not yet been revealed. No writer has been set to...

‘Girl With the Dragon Tattoo’: Lisbeth Salander Standalone TV Series in the Works at Amazon (Exclusive)
Image
Amazon is developing a series centered on Lisbeth Salander, the character created by Stieg Larsson for the so-called Millenium books.

The project, which is currently titled “The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo,” will not be a sequel or continuation of the story from the books or the films into which they were adapted. It will instead take Salander and place her in today’s world with a wholly new setting, new characters, and a new story.

No writer or lead actress is currently attached to the series. Andy Harries, founder and CEO of Left Bank Pictures, will executive produce along with Rob Bullock. Amazon Studios and Left Bank will produce in association with Sony Pictures Television.

Harries’ extensive list of past executive producer credits include “Quiz,” “The Crown” “Strike Back,” and “Outlander.” Bullock was also an executive producer on “Strike Back” as well as the YouTube series “Origin.” He has...

Hrithik Roshan
Hrithik Roshan inspires his fan with a broken back to start his dance academy
Hrithik Roshan
Talking about inspiration is not easy, "Never give up," are the initial words that hit your mind. Celebrities with inspiring life stories are great to have as role models. One such star is Hrithik Roshan, whose struggles and rise to the level he is at right now gives us a massive inspirational boost.

Hrithik Roshan has suffered several physical injuries but he has never let it get in the way of his ambition and drive and came back stronger than ever. It's difficult to believe that a fan would find inspiration from his role model's life and fight for his own.

Sumit Lekhari is one such fan who owes his life to Hrithik and can't thank him for being his source of inspiration. At a recent event in Udaipur, Sumit expressed that how may years back he was working as labor at a factory where he fell which cracked his backbone.

Flatliners movie review: Doa
MaryAnn’s quick take… The reboot no one asked for of a movie no one much remembers has landed… and it’s dead on arrival, with nothing new to say and no new way to say it. I’m “biast” (pro): I’m a fan of some of the cast

I’m “biast” (con): tired of all the reboots

I have seen the source material (and I don’t much like it)

(what is this about? see my critic’s minifesto)

The reboot no one asked for of a movie no one much remembers has landed… and it’s dead on arrival. Oh, this new and pointless Flatliners deserves all the terrible death-related puns we can toss at it: “Someone should have put a do-not-rescusitate on the 1990 movie.” “A fate worse than death.” “Brain dead.” “Send it to the morgue.” C’mon, it’s fun!

I rewatched the...

'Flatliners' Review: This Thriller Remake Is a 'Fright Free-Fiasco'
Kevin Bacon, Julia Roberts, William Baldwin, Kiefer Sutherland, and Oliver Platt in L'expérience interdite (1990)
I'm dumbfounded by the idea of remaking a movie that was no damn good in the first place. Is it the possibility of making it better? The exact opposite happens with Flatliners, an update of the 1990 Joel Schumacher film that became a hit by corralling hot young talent of the day (Julia Roberts, Kiefer Sutherland, Kevin Bacon) into a trippy premise about medical students experimenting with stopping their hearts for a few minutes to see what death is like. Credit Flatliners 2.0, with a script by Ben Ripley of Source Code,...

‘Flatliners’ Review: Unremarkable Remake Flashes Before Your Eyes
Kevin Bacon, Julia Roberts, William Baldwin, Kiefer Sutherland, and Oliver Platt in L'expérience interdite (1990)
Hollywood’s defibrillator acumen on long-dormant properties continues with “Flatliners,” only without any real shock to life to justify remaking the 1990 cheating-death thriller starring Kiefer Sutherland and Julia Roberts. Keeping original writer Peter Filardi’s same basic structure of cocky medical students checking into the beyond for a few minutes for ostensibly research-oriented reasons, only to discover the afterlife has aftereffects, Swedish director Niels Arden Opley (“The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo”) and new screenwriter Ben Ripley (“Source Code”) serve up a fast-moving but seriously underwhelming and charmless display of young-and-dangerous tropes and paranormal consequences. Where Joel Schumacher at least had the.

‘Flatliners’ Review
Stars: Ellen Page, Diego Luna, Nina Dobrev, James Norton, Kiersey Clemons, Kiefer Sutherland | Written by Ben Ripley | Directed by Niels Arden Oplev

Danish director Niels Arden Oplev is still best known for The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo (what, you mean you don’t remember Dead Man Down?), and he brings the same flat, TV movie aesthetic to this “sequel” to Joel Schumacher’s 1990 sci-horror. The original’s high concept plot is retained and given a 21st century makeover – although it’s still as hokey and dumb as Schumacher’s film, and once again fails to capitalise on its central conceit.

The premise of Flatliners is that a young med student, Courtney (Ellen Page), comes up with the bright idea of having her heart stopped, then started again, under controlled conditions. She employs the help of a group of fellow students, who see the experiment as a shortcut to bountiful medical careers.

‘Flatliners’ is All Too Accurate: Why Remakes Are Some of the Riskiest Movies to Make
Kevin Bacon, Julia Roberts, William Baldwin, Kiefer Sutherland, and Oliver Platt in L'expérience interdite (1990)
This weekend brings the remake of “Flatliners,” Joel Schumacher’s 1990 thriller that starred Julia Roberts. Reviews are universally terrible for this retread of good-looking med-school students who put life-after-death on repeat, but it was a nail-biter for studio Sony Pictures from the outset: They took the risk of making an honest-to-god remake.

A remake sounds like the safest bet there is; isn’t original, untested IP the thing that studios fear most? However, in this market a true remake is what passes for a gamble. They’ve become a box-office rarity.

While none of this year’s top-grossing films are originals, there are very few genuine remakes. Yes, the year’s biggest movie, “Beauty and the Beast,” is a direct remake of the 1991 classic — but it went from animated to live action. (It was not a remake of the multiple live-action films and TV shows that preceded it, which stretch...

How 'Flatliners' Reboot Is Representing a New Generation
Kiefer Sutherland at an event for 24 heures chrono (2001)
Almost 20 years since the original sci-fi thriller with Kiefer Sutherland and Julia Roberts, Sony Picture's upcoming Flatliners has received an upgrade more significant than new technology.

"It's female driven now. It’s three girls and two boys. The old one was four boys and one girl," director Niels Arden Oplev told The Hollywood Reporter at the film's premiere Wednesday night in Los Angeles. Oplev's credits include the original The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo.

"The unity and the friendship they have is what we need in this world. They look like the real world and not the fake news world that...

The Preview Reel: American Made & Flatliners
Welcome to the “Preview Reel” column, where we look at the week’s upcoming wide-release movies. Last weekend’s box office was lower than expected with Kingsman: The Golden Circle failing to hit $40 million, The Lego Ninjago Movie barely earning $20 million, and Friend Request recording the worst wide opening of all-time with a mere $2 million across 2,500 screens. This week, Kingsman will be doing battle with the new Tom Cruise vehicle, American Made, while the Flatliners remake will most likely be dead on arrival. But will either movie be good? Let’s find out.

American Made

What we are excited about: The last time Tom Cruise and director Doug Liman teamed up was for Edge of Tomorrow (or Live. Die. Repeat. whichever stupid title you prefer) in 2014, and while American Made is a completely different movie, we’re excited for their next collaboration. Liman is known for his fast and loose...

First Look at Kiefer Sutherland Reprising His Role as Nelson Wright in New Flatliners Promo Spot
The only aspect of this upcoming Flatliners reboot that I'm interested in is seeing Kiefer Sutherland reprise his role from the original 1990 movie. He played a character named Nelson Write in the film and he was the ringleader who started experimenting with death with his friends and colleagues. When talking about his character, Sutherland previously told Metro U.K.:

“I play a professor at the medical university. It is never stated but it will probably be very clearly understood that I’m the same character I was in the original Flatliners but that I have changed my name and I’ve done some things to move on from the experiments that we were doing in the original film.“I loved making the first film and when I was asked if I would be interested in taking part in this, it didn’t take more than a minute to say yes.

Latest Flatliners trailer promises that you haven't lived until you've died
Although Flatliners appears to be a remake of the 1990 Joel Schumacher film, it's actually a sequel thanks to the inclusion of Keifer Sutherland who will be reprising his role of Nelson Wright from the first film. Even so, you'd be forgiven for continuing to label the Niels Arden Oplev (The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo) directed flick as a remake as it seems to thrust the same concept on a... Read More...

The ‘Flatliners’ Reboot Travels to the Afterlife and Back in a Trippy New Trailer
Take a near-death head trip, and hear a whole lot of heavy breathing, in a new trailer for Niels Arden Oplev's (The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo) upcoming Flatliners revival about a new team of med students who open up a door to the afterlife and find more than they bargained for. The new incarnation lives in that modern studio movie liminal space between a remake, reboot, and sequel. It's essentially a remake, taking the concept and applying it to a new set of characters, but original cast member Kiefer Sutherland will reprise his role as Nelson, …...
