"Boxing Is the Perfect Platform": Ving Rhames & Luiii On Uppercut's Themes
Image
This article may contain spoilers for Uppercut, which is in theaters, digital and on demand on February 28th.

Sports drama films come in all shapes and sizes, but one of the best examples of the genre comes in the form of boxing. From Rocky toMillion Dollar Baby, boxing films have always shown the measure of a person and their ability to keep going. In the case of Uppercut, starring German singer Luiii and Ving Rhames, the story is far more complex. A new take on a German film titled Leberhaken, the film follows Toni (Luiii) as someone wanting to be trained in boxing by a past champion named Elliot (Rhames).

The story is about two people understanding one another and how they change in a series of flashbacks and flashforwards centered on how boxing changed Toni. Cbr to speak with Luiii and Rhames about their film, their relationship in it,...

Books Punch Your Face – The Criminal Complex Midsummer Reading List
Eight noir novels to help fill your endless summer with a sense of overwhelming dread and paranoia.

Okay, so I’m the professor who wakes up three weeks before the end of the semester and hits everybody over the head with a pile of mandatory reading assignments that everybody has to crowbar in between midnight finals cram sessions and kegstands, but you know, only if they hope to make it out with a passing grade.

My list isn’t filled with breezy bicycle rides through rural Tuscany. Not a happy ending in the bunch. But let’s face it, unless you live in the fourteen square-block section of SoCal that stayed in the mid-sixties to upper seventies range this summer, you’re hiding in your goddamn house waiting for that flaming orb in the sky to duck under the horizon once and for all.

So here are eight books to...

Muhammad Ali: A.K.A. Cassius Clay Review d: Jim Jacobs
Muhammad Ali: A.K.A. Cassius Clay (1970) Direction: Jim Jacobs Written by: Bernard Evslin Narration: Richard Kiley Muhammad Ali: Made In Miami Review The best of the trio of documentaries mentioned in my Muhammad Ali: The Greatest post was Muhammad Ali a.k.a. Cassius Clay, made in 1970 by boxing promoter Jim Jacobs and narrated by Richard Kiley. Jacobs' film is the most stylistically daring of the three: in addition to breaking the fourth wall, it depicts Ali — with boxing trainer Cus D'Amato — examining film highlights of himself and other boxers. Unfortunately, after the 30-minute mark, a.k.a. Cassius Clay devolves into yet another hagiography. The documentary needed more comparisons to Jack Johnson, Joe Louis, and other fighters of the past to make it interesting. Like Muhammad Ali: The Greatest and Muhammad Ali: Made in Miami, a.k.a. Cassius Clay focuses on the 1960s and...

Muhammad Ali: The Greatest Review d: Carlos Larkin
Muhammad Ali: The Greatest (2001) Direction and narration: Carlos Larkin Muhammad Ali Growing up in the 1970s, the specter of heavyweight boxer Muhammad Ali — whom I could never stand — was everywhere. Contrary to opinions voiced about him post-Parkinson's Disease, Ali was the most despised athlete of that era. The most beloved was actually soccer superstar Pelé. Nonetheless, from that time on a raft of mediocre documentaries-cum-hagiographies have been made of the man. Not surprisingly, none has gotten to that rotten core. Here are three that I've recently watched in consecutive order: Muhammad Ali: The Greatest, Muhammad Ali: Made in Miami, and Muhammad Ali a.k.a. Cassius Clay. The first documentary I streamed was Carlos Larkin's Muhammad Ali: The Greatest (2001) — not to be confused with William Klein's 1969 Ali documentary of the same title. Of the aforementioned trio, The Greatest is undoubtedly the most hagiographical, as the...

Townsend to helm 'Homiez'
Robert Townsend
Robert Townsend is in final negotiations to direct the family adventure film Lil Homiez, written by Dallas Jackson and Townsend.

Overture Films has acquired the rights to the film, which is based on a short film by Jackson.

Described as a hip-hop version of "the Little Rascals meets the Rugrats," Homiez recounts the adventures of five multiethnic kids as they try to save their neighborhood from being taken over by an evil land developer.

John Davis will produce with Jackson through Davis' urban family film banner DJ Classicz. Lloyd Humphrey and Marie Bell are exec producing.

Actor-writer-director Townsend, who will appear next in Of Boys and Men, will soon finish directing Phantom Punch, starring Ving Rhames. He is repped by Rigberg Entertainment Group, APA and attorney Nina Shaw.
