What Happened to Dorothy Bell?, the second feature from writer/director Danny Villanueva Jr. is, on its face, just another found footage/screenlife film about an investigation into the paranormal gone wrong. But, like the director’s first film, I Dream of a Psychopomp, there’s something deeper lurking under the surface, and that makes all the difference.
As a child, Ozzy Grey (Asya Meadows; Hyde Park) suffered a traumatic injury at the hands, and blade, of her grandmother Dorothy Bell. It was the final act in her transformation from beloved librarian to part of an urban legend about an evil presence haunting the library. There’s even a picture of what is allegedly her ghost in the building.
She repressed the memories of the event, and her family told her the wounds...

The Black Mass, the title of actress Devanny Pinn’s directorial debut is not, as one might guess, a reference to a Satanic ritual. It’s the description one of the survivors gave of the man who, across one long night in 1978, attacked four of her sorority sisters, killing two of them as well as attacking a random woman he encountered nearby.
That man was Ted Bundy. That doesn’t mean that The Black Mass is a typical true-crime film or even a straightforward slasher film. Pinn and co-writers Eric Pereira and Brandon Slagle keep the killer in the background figuratively and literally for much of the film.
While he is in almost every scene, or the scenes are shot from his perspective, for the...

Billed as a vampire comedy, Don’t Suck is the story of Pete, a burnt-out comedian who’s spent too much time chasing fame on the standup circuit. He’s finally managed to go viral, but it’s from using the C word on a cashier while trying to be funny. However, he and comedy club owner Danny dismiss it as her fault for being too easily offended.
That’s followed by Pete approvingly referring to Danny “Weinstiening” the students in his comedy class and boasting about being part of the mob that stormed the Capitol. That should give you an idea of where Don’t Suck is coming from, what kind of jokes to expect and whether or not to cut your losses and bail now.

"Don't Suck" is a funny and surprisingly heartfelt film that manages to be both real and bizarre. Jamie Kennedy plays Pete Brennan, a respected but struggling comedian, while Matt Rife shines as the comedian vampire, Ethan. The movie explores the dynamics between comedians on the road and the challenges they face, while also delving into the relationship between Pete and his girlfriend Stephanie.
Don't Suck follows the unexpected duo of Pete, a washed-up veteran comic, and his opener, Ethan, an unfunny comedian who leans into a bit about being a vampire. Things take an unexpectedly wacky turn when Pete learns that Ethan's act is actually true, and he is in fact a vampire. As their tour takes off, they try to bridge the gap between exploiting Ethan's vampirism and being real with one another.

It’s a shame Don’t Suck doesn’t take its own advice [comic rimshot]. Sorry, are you not a fan of plucking low-hanging fruit? Don’t expect anything more from Rj Collins’ soulless vampire standup horror comedy that tries to manufacture edginess with faceplant jokes about Harvey Weinstein, Bill Cosby, and Jeffrey Epstein in the first however many minutes. The only laughter you’ll hear throughout this dreadfully unfunny exercise are the crowd reactions added in post-production, since audiences might as well be rooms full of crickets with material this flat.
