Tony Gilroy Will Never Write for a Viewer Scrolling on Their Phone — and ‘Andor’ Shows It
Image
“Star Wars” spin-off “Andor” is an intricate puzzle. It all begins in 2016 with Gareth Edwards’ standalone “Rogue One: A Star Wars Story,” starring Diego Luna as rebel leader Cassian Andor, for which screenwriter-fixer Tony Gilroy did enough rewriting and reshoots to earn a WGA credit. Disney’s Lucasfilm developed “Andor” as a prequel series that never got off the ground until Gilroy came in with more fixes. He believed that the original Butch and Sundance concept — initially centered on Andor and his robot buddy K-2So (Alan Tudyk) — would never fly.

Gilroy’s version was an origin story tracing the making of a revolutionary, the education of Cassian Andor as a scruffy, reluctant malcontent who is radicalized into a rebel leader. Inevitably, Gilroy became the showrunner and delivered well-reviewed Season 1 (2022), which scored eight Primetime Emmy nominations.

Disney’s original plan: Create five “Andor” seasons leading up to the start of “Rogue One.

Tyler Perry’s 14% Rotten Tomatoes Rom-Com Defies Controversy For Another Week of Streaming Success
Image
Tyler Perry has come under fire recently after being accused of sexual assault and workplace harassment by The Oval actor Derek Dixon, but his latest releases haven’t suffered for the disturbing allegations. Perry most recently wrote, directed, and starred in Madea’s Destination Wedding, the latest film in the Madea franchise following the titular character who goes to the Bahamas for a destination wedding, only for tensions to arise which lead to suspicions about the marriage’s legitimacy. Madea’s Destination Wedding hit Netflix on July 11, and the film is currently charting in the top 10 in more than 50 countries globally, including the United States. This success also comes in spite of poor scores of 14% from critics on Rotten Tomatoes, and even a 44% on the audience-driven Popcornmeter.

Perry also recently found success with Straw, the psychological thriller starring Taraji P. Hensonthat spent several weeks atop streaming charts. Henson spoke about her connection...

From well-known, iconic classics to underseen, forgotten films, the streamer has movies you either may not have ever heard of before or ones you have been meaning to check out for years. Case in point: Its psychological thriller collection includes the most underrated film that “Andor” creator Tony Gilroy has ever made, as well as one of the most beloved and oft-quoted movies of the 1990s.

Here are the best psychological thrillers you can stream on HBO Max in July.

“Duplicity” (Universal Pictures) “Duplicity” (2009)

“Duplicity,” writer-director Tony Gilroy‘s underrated follow-up to his acclaimed “Michael Clayton,” is an unlikely blend of paranoid corporate politics and romance. It follows two paid corporate spies (Julia Roberts and Clive Owen) whose attraction to each other complicates their respective assignments and compels them to concoct a daring scheme designed to trick their bosses.

Tyler Perry's 'Straw' Scores Nearly 50 Million Views in 2nd Week on Netflix
Image
Tyler Perry's polarizing new thriller Strawpulled in nearly 50 million views in its second week on Netflix, making it the biggest week this year for a movie and the biggest week for a 2025 launch on the streaming service. The psychological crime drama has been widely panned by critics but seems to be faring much better with audiences, having tallied up 48.9 million views in its second week, nearly double – and a 93.3% increase on – that of its opening weekend. The film debuted on June 6 and amassed a viewership of 25.3 million in its first three days.

Straw is led by Taraji P. Henson, who plays Janiyah, a struggling single mother trying to get by in the face of overwhelming odds. Her "world unravels in chaos as her day goes from bad to worse to catastrophic as she struggles to care for her ill daughter," according to the official synopsis for Perry's latest film.

Directed by Tyler Perry, 55, 'Straw' Dodges Controversies To Break Netflix Records in First Week of Release
Image
Despite a wave of negative reviews — and even more serious offscreen controversies — Tyler Perry’s latest Netflix film, Straw, has become an undeniable streaming juggernaut. After debuting on June 6, the psychological thriller starring Taraji P. Henson has officially pulled off the biggest single-week viewership of any movie on Netflix so far in 2025. In just its second week, Straw nearly doubled its audience, soaring to 48.9 million views — a 93.3% jump from its opening weekend haul of 25.3 million.

That first-week performance was already enough to make it Netflix’s most-watched film for the week of June 2, but the new numbers solidify Straw as not just a hit, but a record-breaker. The movie easily outpaced Netflix’s next most-watched film, the documentary Titan: The OceanGate Submersible Disaster, which came in second with 17.4 million views during the same window.

Straw’s surge comes at a curious time. In the background of its release, Perry is...

Despite Poor Reviews, Tyler Perry's New Thriller Just Celebrated a Massive Achievement on Netflix
Image
Tyler Perry has always been a huge draw on Netflix, as the duo's multi-deal partnership has led to multiple streaming hits. However, his new release, Straw, has just celebrated a major achievement.

Henson in the leading role and has received praise from the audience, although the critics disagreed. After debuting at the top of the charts in its first weekend, Netflix has just revealed that Straw had achieved two major feats: the biggest week this year for a movie and the biggest week for a 2025 launch.

In its debut week for the week between June 2 and 8, the mystery thriller debuted in first place with 25.3 million views and 48.5 million hours viewed. Since the film premiered on June 6 on the streaming platforms, it...

Ahead of New Madea Installment, Tyler Perry's New Thriller Is an Instant Hit on Netflix
Image
Tyler Perry has a multi-year deal with Netflix that has proven to be very lucrative. His latest addition, the mystery thriller Straw, is one of his many hits.

Perry has had a long series of projects with the streaming service, both films and TV shows. The Madea creator's new film debuted with mixed reviews from the critics but positive ones from the audience. This turned Straw into a streaming hit, as it debuted with very strong numbers at the top of the global charts, per Tudum.

For the week between June 2 and 8, the mystery thriller debuted in first place with 25.3 million views and 48.5 million hours viewed. Since the film debuted on June 6, it only had three days to gather views and it became a massive success. Straw entered the Top 10 in 81 countries around the world and became the No. 1 film in 26 of them, including the U.S.

This comes despite Straw's poor reviews.

Tyler Perry's New Mystery Thriller Debuts With Fresh Rotten Tomatoes Audience Score
Image
Tyler Perry recently released a psychological crime drama film called Straw. The movie, which debuted on Netflix on June 6, has been a hit with viewers.

Per ScreenRant, the latest thriller from Madea creator Perry has closed out its first weekend on Netflix with some solid reviews from viewers. At the time of writing, Straw holds a 76% approval rating via review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes' user-generated "Popcornmeter," as averaged across more than 250 user-submitted ratings. Although there are not currently enough critical ratings to generate a "Tomatometer" score for the film, early reviews from critics point towards it being a general success.

Written and directed by Perry, who also produced alongside Angi Bones and Tony Strickland, Straw stars Taraji P. Henson as Janiya Wiltkinson, a single mother living with her often ill daughter Aria. Andor Creator Tony Gilroy Shares New Details About His Next, Non-Star Wars Movie
Image
After making his feature scripting debut with 1992's "The Cutting Edge," an agreeable figure skating riff on Shakespeare's "The Taming of the Shrew" starring D.B. Sweeney and Moira Kelly, Tony Gilroy quickly established himself as a Hollywood screenwriter to watch. Though he received only scattered praise for delivering a hugely engrossing adaptation of Stephen King's "Dolores Claiborne" and penning the niftily plotted medical thriller "Extreme Measures," his major rewrite of "The Devil's Advocate," which transformed a difficult-to-pin-down project into a shamelessly entertaining box office hit, placed him on the town's A-list.

While Gilroy didn't have a singular voice like his top-paid peers Shane Black, Joe Eszterhas, and Daniel Waters, he was highly valued by filmmakers for his wit, sense of storytelling structure, and lack of preciousness. He wasn't above tinkering on Michael Bay's silly "Armageddon" or Antoine Fuqua's action-comedy "Bait," which was likely because a) the money...

‘Andor’ Sets a Rare Star Wars Record That I Wish Doesn’t Turn Into a Trend for the Franchise
Image
The second season of Tony Gilroy’s Andor received a huge welcome among Star Wars fans. It was one of the rare mature shows from the franchise, which managed to impress both fans and critics with its two seasons. After Season 2, Andor becomes the first project from the Star Wars universe not to feature the lightsaber or any of the Jedi vs Dark Force magical fights.

The lack of lightsabers marks a major difference between the Diego Luna-led series and the other films/TV shows. Andor tells the story of normal citizens who fight for their rights, without relying much on the supernatural elements that define Star Wars. For me, it’s more of a political show than a fantasy series. Doesn’t mean that this will work for every Star Wars show.

Andor‘s unique achievement shouldn’t be copied for other Star Wars projects Diego Luna as...

Tyler Perry announced that he’s all in on Divorced, and had people scratching their heads.

Some hadn’t even heard that he was married!

All jokes aside, Perry’s media empire continues to grow, and he’s private enough about his personal life that some details can go unnoticed.

What’s this new project really about?

Val Kilmer’s Certified Fresh Western With an ‘1883’ Star Wrangles a Spot on Streaming Charts
Image
The tragic passing of Top Gun and Batman Forever star Val Kilmer shocked the world last week, but it didn’t take fans long to begin digging through his diverse filmography on streaming. Kilmer was never nominated for an Oscar in his career, but if he had been, many would argue that it should have been for Tombstone. Kilmer stars alongside Kurt Russell (Monarch: Legacy of Monsters) and Sam Elliot (1883) in the 1993 Western that tells the story of a lawman whose plans to retire are thwarted by the outlaws he was famous for hunting down. Tombstone has become one of the most popular movies on Prime Video since Kilmer’s passing, sitting at #9 at the time of writing. It earned scores of 75% from critics and 93% from audiences on Rotten Tomatoes.

In addition to Kilmer, Russell, and Elliot, Bill Paxton (Twister) and Stephen Lang (Avatar) also star in Tombstone. The film was written by Kevin Jarre,...

The #1 Most-Watched Thriller on Prime Video Features a Former Teen Star in a Mature New Role
Image
Tyler Perry has long been a divisive filmmaker. Some people eat up his escapist thrillers featuring twisty narratives and passionate affairs. Others are not as keen on the director’s work, calling him out for problematic depictions of Black characters. Despite the persistent criticisms of the filmmaker’s output, he continues to release new content with a certain regularity. Perry debuted his latest effort on Prime Video earlier this month, and it’s already climbing the charts.

Perry’s newest picture is called Tyler Perry’s Duplicity. I want to say that the film marks a step forward for the director, but the early reviews tell a different story. RogerEbert.Com posted a one-star review of the director’s new film lamenting that he seems to return to old habits with his latest offering after showing some positive progress with his 2024 Netflix release The Six Triple Eight. 'I'm So Sick of This Old Broad': Tyler Perry Addresses Playing Madea While Teasing Upcoming Netflix Movie
Image
Since 1999, Tyler Perry has been synonymous with portraying the short-tempered but lovable Mabel "Madea" Simmons, giving audiences lots to laugh and think about over several plays and films. However, as his upcoming Netflix film, Madea's Destination Wedding, approaches, Perry admits he's "sick" of playing the title character after all these years.

Perry addressed his long-time role as Madea during an interview on Good Morning America while plugging his latest film, Duplicity, and teasing what to expect in Madea's Destination Wedding. Though Perry has enjoyed some of his greatest successes thanks to Madea, he joked that he's grown tired of playing the role. "I'm so sick of this old broad," he said before going into character, quipping, "What is it, damn it, what is it?!"

During the ending of Tyler Perry’s Duplicity, a disheartened Marley talks about how the story is never about one case, and merit should never be wiped away by a single duplicitous situation or person. In the film, she is a lawyer whose best friend and her husband are having a tough time getting along recently. She’s actually really close to Rodney, so she tells his wife, Fela, that she will help them get their spark back. Marley is with a man named Tony, who Fela introduced her to. They seem to be close, but Marley doesn’t seem to be comfortable with the topic of marriage. We find out much later that she’s been betrayed by her ex enough to leave her incapable of trusting anybody fully. ‘Tyler Perry’s Duplicity’ Review: Bizarro Police Shooting Drama Mixed Up About Its Own Motives
Image
Soap opera-like in delivery, yet emotionally sanitized, Tyler Perry’s Prime drama “Duplicity” is a languorous affair. It’s a strange-looking, odd-feeling film that gestures toward mystery and larger conspiracy, but it seldom pulls on these threads. Instead, it ends up an anodyne political drama that says little of note.

At the movie’s center are two Black women, successful lawyer Marley Wells (Kat Graham) and TV news anchor Fela Blackburn (Meagan Tandy), who become bound by the police slaying of the former’s brother and latter’s boyfriend, Rodney (Joshua Adeyeye), an unarmed man jogging in an affluent neighborhood. The circumstances around how the police ended up in Rodney’s location are suspicious — they involve a mysterious phone call no one seems interested in investigating — though the shooting itself is more clear-cut in the film’s visual language.

Despite this, much of “Duplicity” involves circular conversations about whether Rodney’s killing can be justified.

'Tyler Perry's Duplicity' Review: Another Average Legal Drama
Image
Tyler Perry's Duplicity is his latest spotlight of Black talent whose faces millennials will recall from throwback YA series like Sister, Sister (RonReaco Lee) and even The Vampire Diaries (Kat Graham). It looks and feels like it was shot in Georgia, with a by-the-numbers tale centered on racism, justice, betrayal and conspiracy. All the makings of another rinse-repeat of Perry mojo that might end up continuing his streak of underwhelming Rotten Tomatoes scores, due to the story's derivative nature and unfortunate lack hardhitting performances.

Nonetheless, this is the brilliantly minded Perry we're talking about, folks, so be prepared for at least a few plot twists and turns along the way that might keep you seated throughout this new straight-to-Prime Video entry until the final credits roll.

The following contains major spoilers for Tyler Perry's Duplicity, now streaming on Prime Video.

Tyler Perry's Duplicity is the latest collaboration between the prolific filmmaker and Prime Video, and it follows a familiar pattern for anyone's who's watched his other work. The film starts with the death of a Black man who is mistaken for a robber, and so at the beginning, Tyler Perry's Duplicity wants to be a timely movie about police shootings. But then it transitions to...

"I've been peripherally involved [with the franchise] for 10 years and intensely involved for six years, so that's a pretty big chunk of my life. There are other things to do. I think when it's done, I will have left a pretty big piece of Star Wars real estate behind. I'm feeling guilty about not chipping in," he added.

Gilroy has had a long career in filmmaking, having worked on films like The Bourne Identity, The Bourne Supremacy, The Bourne Ultimatum, Michael Clayton, and Duplicity. When asked what the future holds, Gilroy said he wants to get back into directing.

Jacques Audiard’s ‘Emilia Perez’ Wins Best Film at France’s 2025 Cesar Awards (Full Winners List)
Image
Jacques Audiard’s crime musical “Emilia Perez” won a raft of prizes, including best film and director, at the 50th edition of the Cesar Awards, France’s equivalent to the Oscars, on Friday in Paris.

“Emilia Perez” won a total of seven awards out of 12 nominations. While Zoe Saldana and Karla Sofía Gascón were both on hand and nominated for best actress, they lost to Hafsia Herzi, who starred as a prison supervisor in Stéphane Demoustier’s “Borgo.”

Gascón made her first award show appearance at the Cesar Awards ceremony after laying low in the wake of her offensive posts. Although she skipped the press line on the red carpet, Gascón sat on the same row as Audiard and Saldana inside the Olympia theater, but didn’t seat next to them and didn’t seem to be on speaking terms.

The ceremony’s emcee, French actor Jean-Pascal Zadi, tried to...

‘Emilia Pérez’ Wins Best Film at France’s César Awards

Jacques Audiard’s Oscar contender Emilia Pérez was the big winner at the 50th César Awards, France’s equivalent of the Oscars, taking best film and best director among multiple honors.

Audiard won best director and best adapted screenplay for Emilia Pérez, and the film also took honors for best sound, best cinematography, best visual effects and best original music.

But Emilia Pérez star Karla Sofía Gascón, who walked the red carpet at the Paris gala, returning to the spotlight for the first time since the eruption of the controversy surrounding her offensive resurfaced tweets, lost out in the best actress race to Hafsia Herzi, who won for her role as a female prison guard in Stéphane Demoustier’s drama Borgo.

Gascón, who is Spanish, skipped Spain’s national film awards, the Goyas, earlier this month following the backlash over her past social media posts. Netflix removed the actress, the...

In the middle of his rise to prominence as a filmmaker, he made Duplicity, quite possibly the most head-spinning film of his career, but also easily the hottest, as a nice bonus.
