It's been a tough year so far for studio horror films, with the odd exception, of course. Only a few weeks after Sony's 28 Years Later appeared to defy trends and deliver a respectable haul at the box office, the studio's I Know What You Did Last Summer legacy sequel found itself being overwhelmed by competition. The slasher film debuted this past week, and underperformed with just under $15 million in its opening frame at the domestic box office. Audiences were clearly more interested in watching the holdover hits Superman, Jurassic World Rebirth, and F1. However, despite its lukewarm debut, I Know What You Did Last Summer has now overtaken one of last year's surprise horror hits, the low-budget supernatural chiller Immaculate.
Starring Sydney Sweeney as a nun who moves to Italy and discovers horrific secrets at her convent, Immaculateconcluded its box office run with $35 million worldwide and $15 million domestically.

Michael Mohan's 2024 horror thriller "Immaculate" is another entry in the well-worn "demon baby" genre, a horror sub-category that solidified in 1968 with the release of "Rosemary's Baby." In the film, Sydney Sweeney plays Cecilia, a young nun who moves into an Italian convent, following her own spiritual senses. While there, she shockingly becomes immaculately pregnant, and the convent sees her child as potentially divine. Of course, there is a shadowy conspiracy afoot, and Cecilia begins to suspect that some of the older nuns and the convent's local priest (Álvaro Morte) might be involving her in some sort of demonic ritual. The film has a gloriously shocking ending, although it's a little too arch and arty to be the trashy thrill it aims to be. It's unusual that "Immaculate" came out so close to "The First Omen," another demonic pregnancy thriller about a young nun.

Exclusive: The genre maestros at BoulderLight Pictures (Barbarian) and Divide/Conquer (Heart Eyes) are teaming on Amityville, a radical new spin on the famed haunted house story for a new generation, sources tell Deadline.
Joseph and Vanessa Winter, the married writer-director duo behind the excellent SXSW found footage horror movie Deadstream, are set to direct from their own script. Plot details are under wraps. But Raphael Margules & J.D. Lifshitz will produce for BoulderLight, alongside Adam Hendricks & Greg Gilreath for Divide/Conquer.
Given that BoulderLight has been under a first-look deal with New Line since 2023, that will be the filmmakers’ first stop with the material, though it’s not yet been exposed to studios. Producers are looking to fast-track the film, with Q4 2025 being targeted for production.

Spoiler Alert !!!Minor spoilers for Echo Valley ahead!
Sydney Sweeney’s rise to fame has been marked by bold choices. Her roles in HBO’s Euphoria and the erotic thriller titled The Voyeurs prove that she has never shied away from taking on emotionally complex roles. But every daring leap doesn’t land, for example, the Michael Mohan feature that tripped on its twist.
Sweeney was great as Pippa and had the acting chops, but the story didn’t serve her well enough. Fast-forward to 2025, Echo Valley, her latest Apple TV+ release, is another simmering thriller that didn’t have an emotional payoff and ended up in the same frustrating territory as The Voyeurs.

Known for her compelling performances in shows like Euphoria and The White Lotus, Sydney Sweeney ventured into the realm of erotic thrillers with the 2021 movie The Voyeurs, a movie following a young couple’s unhealthy obsession with their eccentric neighbours across the street.
And though the actress did her best in the movie, the film itself failed to garner the anticipated reception, especially with critics noting its overt parallels to Alfred Hitchcock’s Rear Window, suggesting that despite its modern twists, The Voyeurs struggles to establish a distinct identity.

One of Hollywood’s finest up-and-coming actors, Sydney Sweeney isn’t just the girl next door. She’s fierce and bold, and she can bring you down with one tear and then switch to wild party mode in the next scene. Whether she’s being messy, mysterious, or emotionally wrecked, trust us, this girl actually delivers.
Within a few years of her career, Sweeney went from “wait, I know her from somewhere” to full-on Hollywood It Girl. And honestly, she’s got the style. For the past few years, she has been crying in bathtubs, fighting in high school hallways, breaking hearts, casually looking flawless, and fixing cars. She is now showcasing her talent on big screens, tiny indie films, and everything in between.
Now, if you’ve missed her emotional rollercoasters, chaotic energy she brings on the screen, and powerful one-liners, it’s time to catch up. From HBO...

The Warrens are back for their last case.
Warner Bros. released the first official trailer for The Conjuring: Last Rites on Thursday, which marks the fourth and final Conjuring movie. However, it’s not necessarily the last in the franchise.
This Conjuring film, like the others, is inspired by the real-life case files of paranormal investigators and couple, Ed (Patrick Wilson) and Lorraine Warren (Vera Farmiga). This time, it follows the 1986 Smurl case, a family who was tormented by a demon for more than a decade.
“Every case is different. Every family is different. Once we start, there is no going back. Anything can happen. And most likely, anything will,” Ed says in the trailer.
Lorraine hints at this one being the most dangerous as she says “something’s different” to Ed. At the end of the trailer, a demon says to Lorraine: “We’ve been waiting so patiently so patiently for you,...

Jaume Collet-Serra directed the horror thriller The Woman in the Yard, which has pulled in just $17 million at the global box office since reaching theatres last month, but back in December he brought us the action thriller Carry On, which quickly became one of the most popular movies on the Netflix streaming service. There has been talk of a sequel – but before any Carry On follow-ups get rolling, Variety reports that Collet-Serra and Netflix will be working together on the dramatic psychological thriller An Innocent Girl.
Michael Mohan, the director of The Voyeurs and Immaculate, wrote the original screenplay for An Innocent Girl, and Marc Guggenheim, who created the DC Comics-inspired TV shows Arrow and Legends of Tomorrow, has since come in to handle revisions. The work of Edgar Allan Poe has been adapted for the big and small screen numerous times over the years, with several of the legendary writer's stories influencing Mike Flanagan's recent retelling of The Fall of the House of Usher.
The acclaimed Netflix miniseries put its own unique spin on The Masque of the Red Death, and we're now hearing that a feature adaptation is in the works. Deadline reports that A24 and Picturehouse are developing the project, with Charlie Polinger set to write and direct.
This take on the short story is described as "wildly revisionist and darkly comedic." Sydney Sweeney is in talks to play the lead role. No details on her character were disclosed, but we assume it'll be a gender-switched take on Prince Prospero.

Prime Video today released the official trailer and key art for The Sticky, a fast-paced, dark comedy series from Blumhouse Television, inspired by a real-life heist that made global headlines in 2012, which saw more than $18 million worth of maple syrup stolen from Quebec’s national reserves.

Erotic thrillers are a bit of a lost art, enjoying a Golden Age in the ’80s before tapering off in the mid-’90s around the time the genre was parodied in 1993’s Fatal Instinct. By the 2000s, notable entries in the the genre had all but disappeared thanks to its success on the direct-to-video market and the advent of the internet with its easily accessible pornography. It has has gone through a bit of a resurgence lately with films like The Voyeurs, Deep Water and Sanctuary, and we can now add Mercedes Bryce Morgan‘s aptly-named Bone Lake to the list, who brings a knowing sense of humor and feminine perspective to the genre.

Amazon Prime Video's movie The Voyeurs is one of many steamy domestic thrillers that have gone viral, thanks in part to the Voyeurs ending. The Voyeurs is an erotic thriller that adds explicit sex scenes to a setup largely cribbed from Hitchcocks psychological thriller. Sydney Sweeney stars as Pippa, who moves into a beautiful loft apartment with her partner Thomas (Jurassic World: Lost Kingdom). Pippa and Thomas can see everything that the glamorous couple across the street, Seb (Ben Hardy) and Julia (Natasha Liu Bordizzo), do via a pair of binoculars.

[Note: With the film out now on Blu-ray, here’s a reposting of our review of Immaculate]
After working together on the one-season Netflix series Everything Sucks! and Prime Video erotic-thriller The Voyeurs, Immaculate sees the reunion of director Michael Mohan and producer/star Sydney Sweeney for a project that is being released into cinemas. Arriving at a remote Italian convent, the devout Sister Cecilia (Sweeney) intends to fulfil a new role tending to dying nuns. As the virginal sister discovers that she is pregnant, it becomes clear that dark secrets are being kept at this gorgeous countryside location.
It is well documented that, after auditioning for this role in 2014, Sweeney used her star power to revive this project and keep the throughline which initially attracted her, even while revising the script. Thank goodness that the Anyone But You...

A lot of movies (and TV shows) are too damn dark these days. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve sat down to watch something made in recent years to end up gradually getting frustrated that I can barely see anything on the screen. Usually, it seems intentional, like directors want you to struggle to see the image for some reason. It was jarring when we saw how dark Aliens vs. Predator: Requiem was, but now that seems to be normal. But the overwhelming darkness isn’t always intentional – for example, director Michael Mohan has taken to social media to let viewers know that his psychological horror film Immaculate (you can read our review Here) was not meant to be as dark as it is on most streaming services.

It’s been over 18 months since we first shared the news of Sydney Sweeney’s plans to produce and star in a reboot of Roger Vadim’s cult 1968 sci-fi Barbarella. Since then, Sweeney’s star has risen and risen, with the Euphoria sensation releasing a slew of films including rom-com Anyone But You, erotic thriller The Voyeurs, and nunsploitation flick Immaculate, leaving ol’ Barb on the back burner. But now it looks like Sweeney has found the right stuff to finally get the project off the ground. The Wright stuff, in fact.
According to Deadline, none other than Cornetto Trilogy mastermind Edgar Wright is in talks to helm the remake. Reportedly Wright has been circling the film for some time, meeting with Sweeney shortly after the remake was announced and expressing an interest in developing the project in a directorial capacity. Madame Web star Sydney Sweeney is a hugely in-demand actress right now, but one top producer doesn’t understand the hype. Carol Baum, who served as executive producer on films such as Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Father of the Bride, slammed the White Lotus actress during a discussion after a screening of her 1988 film Dead Ringers. According to the Daily Mail, Baum said she “didn’t get” Sweeney, who rose to fame playing Cassie Howard on HBO’s hit teen drama Euphoria and has gone on to star in films such as Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, The Voyeurs, Reality, Anyone But You, and Immaculate. “I was watching on the plane Sydney Sweeney’s movie because I wanted to watch it,” Baum continued, referring to Will Gluck’s 2024 romantic comedy Anyone But You. “I wanted to know who she is and why everybody’s talking about her.” She added,...

“Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire” kicked off with $16 million in North American ticket sales across Friday and preview screenings in 4,345 theaters. That nearly matches the $16.6 million that its predecessor “Ghostbusters: Afterlife” earned on its opening day in November 2021. Sony’s sci-fi comedy sequel will easily top domestic charts, though its work isn’t done yet considering its $100 million production budget.
That’s an uptick in the price tag from “Afterlife,” which cost $75 million before marketing and distribution. That franchise revival nearly tripled its $44 million domestic opening weekend, playing well through the Thanksgiving holiday to finish with $129 million and $204 million worldwide. Similarly, “Frozen Empire” could boost its fortunes with Easter at the end of the month.
Reviews have been leaning more lukewarm compared to the so-so received “Afterlife.” Early moviegoers are also a little cooler on the franchise now, with audience survey firm Cinema Score turning in a B+ grade. (“Afterlife” scored an A-.

Thank goodness that the Anyone But You star...

2024 didn’t get off to a great start for Hollywood rising star Sydney Sweeney with the dismal critical response to “Madame Web.” But that’s one lull for the young actress in three straight years of ascendant stardom. And it’s a period where she’s dabbled in all sorts of genres: from rom-coms like “Anyone But You” to erotic thrillers like “The Voyeurs” to Sam Levinson‘s take on teen drama in “Euphoria.”

Convent-set movies occupy a storied place in cinema history—one too vast to attempt summarization in this review. But it’s no matter: Immaculate stands to be a minor entry in both the crowded genre and in Sydney Sweeney’s present ascension to movie stardom. Sweeney produces and recruited Michael Mohan to direct Immaculate after their previous collaborations on TV series Everything Sucks! and erotic-thriller throwback The Voyeurs.
Narratively, Immaculate owes more to Dario Argento’s Suspiria than any nunsploitation picture. The setups are essentially identical: wide-eyed American girl (Sweeney as Sister Cecilia in this case) heads to an all-girls dormitory in Italy. Nefarious plotting by shadowy leaders is unveiled over the course of the narrative.
Both films contain a cold open that sees a young girl attempt escape before meeting her doom. Immaculate’s opening is quite tense, its best sequence. In the aftermath of this chilling intro, the...

Plot: A young nun (Sydney Sweeney) accepts a position at a secluded convent in Italy. While there, she mysteriously becomes pregnant, despite being a virgin, and soon the convent becomes convinced she’s carrying the resurrection of Christ. However, something much more sinister might be happening.
Review: For most of its running time, Immaculate is a decent throwback to Dario Argento-style Italian horror movies, with it getting a lot of mileage out of its picturesque Italian scenery and cast of old pro actors from the region. It’s a slow-burn and not particularly scary, but it builds up to an incredibly strong final scene, which is good enough that it really makes the entire film worth seeing just for the superb payoff.
Too bad then that the eighty-minute build-up to the dazzling final sequence is such a mixed bag, with it really feeling like the writer, Andrew Lobell, and director,...

Sydney Sweeney and Michael Mohan continue to pave a promising path forward for themselves as creative partners in the feature film space. After working together on the Netflix series, Everything Sucks!, they made the 2021 Prime Video release, The Voyeurs. That film is quite engrossing with some delightfully bonkers twists and turns, but the filmmaking precision and elegance on display in Immaculate puts their latest collaboration on another level.
