Longtime executive Gerry Rich has resigned as head of theatrical marketing at Amazon MGM Studios.

Rich had been the marketing head of United Artists Releasing, which was formed from the union of MGM and Annapurna in 2019. Then he segued to a top marketing job at Amazon when the company closed its deal to buy MGM for $8.5 billion in 2022. In the last six years, Rich oversaw the rollout of a wide range of movies, from James Bond entry No Time to Die, boxing drama Creed III, Luca Guadagnino’s Challengers, actioner Beekeeper, and the recent drama Nickel Boys.

In a note to staff, Rich wrote he was stepping away to explore “new opportunities during this incredible time of change in the industry, and am confident that this is the right time for me to do that.” The departure is being characterized as amicable.

The timing is prescient, although unrelated, according to sources.

Apple TV+ is gearing up for the release of Dope Thief, a crime series based on Dennis Tafoya’s novel, which promises to be a tense, high-stakes thrill ride. As it gears up for a busy year of tentpole releases, Warner Bros.’ film division has hired an Amazon MGM Studios executive as its chief business officer.

Ted Lim, who most recently served as head of global strategy and business development at MGM, will join Warner Bros. in a newly created role this week, Motion Picture Group co-chiefs Michael De Luca and Pamela Abdy wrote in a memo to staff on Tuesday.

Lim joined MGM in 2018 from Participant Media, where he served as senior vp strategy and business development, working on investments and acquisitions. Earlier in his career, the exec was part of the corporate strategy and business development team for Disney.

One of the most adult things you can do is face your failures head-on, and that is what Lady Gaga is doing regarding Joker: Folie à Deux. Fresh off revealing that she has a new album on the way, the singer/actress is speaking about the failure of the Joker sequel and has a pretty reasonable response as to why the film didn't work for everyone.

During a chat with Elle Magazine, Gaga made her first comments about Joker: Folie à Deux and its less-than-desirable performance at the box office and with critics. Given the circumstances, she gives the best response she can on the matter by saying, "People just sometimes don't like some things. It's that simple. And I think to be an artist, you have to be willing for people to sometimes not like it. And you keep going even if something didn't connect the way you intended.

Ted Lim has joined Warner Bros Motion Picture Group in the newly created role of Chief Business Officer, the studio said Tuesday.

Lim joins from Amazon MGM Studios, where he most recently served as Head of Global Strategy and Business Development. Staffers were notified of the hire this morning via a memo from Warner Bros chiefs Michael DeLuca & Pam Abdy, to whom Lim will report.

“Working with our colleagues in finance, streaming, franchise, content sales/home entertainment, licensing, and consumer products, Ted will collaborate with each division to ensure each Warner Bros. Pictures release reaches the widest possible audience beyond its theatrical window,” they wrote. “With this new structure, Ricky Tydus who serves as SVP of Creative Strategy & Film Operations and his team will report to Ted.”

Gladiator 2 reviews were generally positive from critics, with praise aimed at the movie's action sequences and epic scope, and it's now been revealed that Scott used an abundance of cameras to capture it all.

During THR's Actor Roundtable, Mescal speaks about Scott's filming strategy on Gladiator 2, recalling just how many cameras the director used for different scenes. Though a more intimate scene may use five or six, the Lucius actor reveals that Scott would have a dozen cameras going for more involved fight sequences. Getting this many cameras into a shot required some cleverness, and Mescal recalls camera operators wearing Roman soldier gear to blend in.

Scott is known as one of the hardest-working filmmakers in Hollywood. He hardly ever stops to take a break; by the time he finishes one project, the next one is underway. His latest movie, Gladiator II, is a mega-budget historical epic with impressive blockbuster scale. Last year, he released a different mega-budget historical epic, Napoleon. In 2021, he released The Last Duel and House of Gucci within six weeks of each other.

A lot of directors work one project at a time — they focus all their attention on one movie and don’t even start thinking of ideas for another one until it’s in the can — but Scott doesn’t work that way. Scott’s best movies were all produced in quick succession.

Ridley Scott's bombastic "Gladiator II" has been slicing its way through the box office thank to its incredible cast and people's love for the original film, although critics have been slightly less enamored with the sequel. Our own "Gladiator II" review praised Denzel Washington's performance as gladiator promoter Macrinus in particular and noted that there are a number of impressive action scenes, but also several parts that fall flat. No amount of pure spectacle can make up for a good story or thoughtful filmmaking, and unfortunately, it sounds like Scott might have had the wrong priorities during production.

In a podcast interview with "DocFix" (via WorldofReel), "Gladiator II" cinematographer John Mathieson called Scott's approach to the film "lazy," adding that he had changed over the years that they had worked together. Mathieson has collaborated with Scott on six of the director's films so far, including the original "Gladiator...

Gladiator was always going to be a hard act to follow; after all, it won multiple Oscars shortly after being released in 2000 and has become widely regarded as a true classic among film lovers.

In a new podcast interview with DocFix, John Mathieson, the cinematographer for ‘Gladiator 2,’ expressed strong reservations about Ridley Scott’s recent approach to filmmaking.

Mathieson, who has previously worked with Scott on multiple projects including ‘Gladiator’ and ‘Kingdom of Heaven,’ shared that Scott’s method has significantly shifted, impacting the quality of his films.

According to Mathieson, Scott, at 87, has adopted a more hurried style, frequently using multiple cameras on set which, in his view, compromises the cinematic quality.

He described this technique as detrimental to meticulous cinematography since it restricts lighting options and reduces attention to detail.

Mathieson lamented the loss of depth in scenes, a quality he feels was a hallmark of Scott’s earlier works.

At last year’s Venice Film Festival, the Rome native erupted with the kind of volcanic indignation that Callas was known for, furious that American actors like “House of Gucci” and “Ferrari” star Adam Driver kept getting cast as iconic Italians. Those parts should have gone to Italian actors, Favino argued at a press conference — though he was quick to add he had nothing against Driver.

With “Maria,” Favino gets the kind of quietly scene-stealing role that could show Hollywood what it’s been missing. In the meditative, slightly surreal drama, he plays Ferruccio, a loyal helpmate who caters to Callas by moving her grand piano around the apartment to whatever window she thinks has the best light that day, despite suffering from a bad back.
