“You will do it naked?”: Jennifer Lawrence’s First Day at Work With Robert Pattinson Was a Bit Strange in ‘Die, My Love’
Image
Best known for Ratcatcher and We Need to Talk About Kevin, Lynne Ramsay got Jennifer Lawrence and Robert Pattinson to star in a horror-comedy that’s being highly praised by the critics. The majority of the reviews for Die, My Love seem to be in favor of the actress, with some critics calling her performance Oscar-worthy. While she wins an Academy Award for her role as Grace or not, she sure wins the award for the most hilarious storytelling.

While promoting Die, My Love, Jennifer Lawrence recalled how the very first scene she shot with Robert Pattinson for the movie was the one where the two actors are naked. Well, that’s one way to throw all the awkwardness out the window.

Lynne Ramsay, Jennifer Lawrence and Robert Pattinson Toast ‘Die, My Love’ at Cannes Dinner Hosted by The Hollywood Reporter and Longines
Image
On the eve of a Cannes Film Festival world premiere, it would be understandable, and so easily forgiven, if you encountered the cast, filmmaker and creative collaborators behind a competition entry and found them to be nervous, on edge or maybe a little jittery. Not Lynne Ramsay and her team from Die, My Love.

The emotions radiating on Friday at sunset from the beloved Cannes auteur, her roster of producers and stars including Jennifer Lawrence, Robert Pattinson, Lakeith Stanfield and Sissy Spacek are best described as calm, cool and confident on what proved to be one of those picture perfect evenings on the French Riviera. Even a light mist vanished in time for cocktail hour atop La Terrasse by Albane at the J.W. Marriott during an exclusive filmmaker dinner in honor of Die, My Love sponsored by Longines and presented by The Hollywood Reporter.

Die, My Love? Not so fast.

2 Korean Ghost Films Involving Crime and Mystery (Pt 2 of 2)
Kadaver (2020)
Continuing my recommendations for Korean ghost movies that are “unusually strange” (in my opinion). Movie (2) titled “Cadaver” (aka “The Cut”) had a low rating but I prefer to watch legal or medical dramas and make my own decisions. The lead actress is an award-winning actress who is very popular these days, so I was interested in her earlier work. Her acting career dates back to 2003. She had a minor role in “A Jewel in the Palace”, the K-drama that started the Korean Wave. ♦ (2) Cadaver (2007) Genre: Ghost stories, Horror, Supernatural, Fantasy, Crime, Mystery, Thriller, Suspense, Medical Drama Storyline: The story begins with what appears to be a gruesome murder scene. A woman who was stabbed with scissors is lying dead on the ground and a frightened young girl is staring at a man with bloody hands. It looks like he intends to kill her too. Did he? Don’t know. The scene changes,...

Telluride: Hillary Clinton Talks ‘Handmaid’s Tale’-Style Abortion Policy at Doc Premiere
Image
Hillary Clinton encouraged a film festival audience in Telluride, Colorado, to “get back to a time when your government is not determining what your choices for your family would be, which is just so Handmaid’s Tale.”

Clinton was in Telluride on Saturday for the premiere of Zurawski v Texas, a documentary she produced about a group of women who sued the state of Texas in 2023 after they were denied abortions when their health was at risk. The film, which was directed by Maisie Crow and Abbie Perrault and is seeking distribution, screened to a sold-out and often sobbing audience at the festival’s 650-seat Palm Theater.

Zurawski v Texas is one of a number of politically topical films at the festival, including Ali Abbasi’s The Apprentice, in which Sebastian Stan plays a young Donald Trump (Briarcliff Entertainment); Matt Tyrnauer’s Carville: Winning Is Everything, Stupid! about Democratic strategist James Carville,...

Jennifer Lawrence to Star in Marital Dark Comedy ‘Why Don’t You Love Me’ for A24
Image
After dabbling in comedy with “No Hard Feelings,” Jennifer Lawrence is tapping back into her funny bone with a new project with A24.

Lawrence will star in and produce “Why Don’t You Love Me?” which is based on a graphic novel by Paul B. Rainey published in 2023. The logline is merely that Lawrence will star as one half of a couple struggling through their marriage while feeling like something is not quite right in their reality.

But Rainey’s book is described as a science-fiction dark comedy about marriage, alcoholism, and depression in which the couple realizes this unhappy marriage is not the life they chose for themselves upon hearing news of an impending nuclear war on the radio. Lawrence’s character is a chain-smoking stalker and couch potato who spends the bulk of her time in a bathrobe, and both she and her husband wonder if this life...

Image
It’s a whodunit with a whole lot of drama. Jennifer Lawrence will get to feud, day-drink and access oodles of disposable income, at least until a body turns up, in “The Wives,” a murder mystery that is in the vein of “The Real Housewives.”

Apple Original Films acquired the project in what it is describing as a “highly competitive situation.” Lawrence will produce the film alongside Justine Ciarrocchi for her company, Excellent Cadaver. Tony and Independent Spirit Award nominee Jeremy O. Harris and Josh Godfrey will also produce the picture under their bb2 banner. It is currently in development, so no word on the final plot or when it might shoot.

“The Wives” will be written by Michael Breslin and Patrick Foley, the writers of the play “Circle Jerk,” which was a Pulitzer Prize finalist. The film is co-produced by Apple Studios and A24, which previously worked together on “Causeway,...

Image
Jennifer Lawrence took time out on Monday night to shine a light on her Oscar nominated co-star Brian Tyree Henry and his work in their Apple/A24 movie Causeway, diving deep into his process. The actress sat down with the Best Supporting Actor nominee for a Q&a following a screening of the film at the London Hotel at Los Angeles.

The two play unlikely individuals, both who suffered trauma, as they find and prop each other in New Orleans. Lawrence plays Lynsey, an Afghanistan war vet who is suffering from body and brain injuries. Henry is James, a mechanic who lost his leg and a nephew in a car accident. Henry gravitated to the project having known the director Lila Neugebauer (making her feature directorial debut here) from Yale Drama School.

The pic began shooting during Covid, but had to shutdown at which point the actors workshopped the script...

Eli Roth on Venice Doc ‘Inferno Rosso: Joe D’Amato on the Road to Excess’ and His Passion For ‘Emanuelle’ Star Laura Gemser
Image
Eli Roth, who is known to have a passion for Italian B-movies, is at the Venice Film Festival to help promote biographical doc “Inferno Rosso: Joe D’Amato on the Road to Excess,” directed by Manlio Gomarasca and Massimiliano Zanin, in which Roth features as a talking head.

The doc, which premiered on the Lido as a special screening, sheds light on Aristide Massaccesi, known as Joe D’Amato, the under-the-radar producer, director and cinematographer who between the 1970s and the late 1990s spawned some 200 films in a wide range of genres spanning from spaghetti westerns to horror to erotic/exotic to porn. Roth spoke to Variety about what makes D’Amato stand out, including the fact that Indonesian-Dutch actress Laura Gemser starred in his “Emanuelle” franchise, not to be confused with the French “Emmanuelle” pics. Edited excerpts.

How did you discover Joe D’Amato and his films?

I first experienced...

Drive-In Dust Offs: Delirium (1987)
Image
Sex and violence, beauty and madness, shoulder pads and pitchforks being stuck in eyeball-faced models. All signs point to Italy in the ‘80s, and Lamberto Bava’s Delirium (1987) fits the bill with murder, mystery, and bee-faced models. What, you think eyeballs get all the fun?

Delirium was released by Medusa Distribuzione in its homeland in April under its original title, Le Foto Di Gioia, and stars Serena Grandi (Antropophagus) as Gioia, the owner of a men’s magazine called Pussycat. When her models start turning up dead, she must figure out who is killing everyone around her, and if she’s the final target. A perfectly normal thriller for the time, yes?

Hold tight, pardner. First, this is a giallo, which means we’re going to need a few things: As many red herrings as possible (check); gratuitous nudity (double check); and a completely nonsensical resolution. Now, one could say...

A Beloved Seth Rogen Movie Is Dominating Netflix Today
Image
The top movies on the Netflix global chart are pretty diverse this week, from recent originals like Ben Wheatley’s Rebecca to horror pictures such as The Purge: Anarchy and Cadaver. Sneaking onto the list, however, is the Seth Rogen-starring Neighbors, with the 2014 comedy currently sitting at sixth place in the worldwide rankings. Why, then, might the pic be getting so much love right now?

One possible answer is that Neighbors is a light, dependably funny movie and as we all know, it’s been a fairly bleak last few months. The Nicholas Stoller-directed production sees Rogen pair up with Rose Byrne as a husband-and-wife duo with a young child who have to deal with a fraternity moving in next door. Led by Zac Efron’s Teddy, the college kids soon end up in a war with Rogen and Byrne’s Mac and Kelly Radner, setting up some ingenious sequences.
