Ah yes, the plague of bad second seasons has affected Severance. It’s the 5th one on the list of shows whose second seasons I was genuinely excited for, only to be disappointed at the end. The 1st series that was struck by this odd affliction was Silo. That was followed by Bandidos. Then came Paatal Lok. After that was Squid Game. Now we have Severance. I wasn’t hyped for these shows in a fanboy-ish way where I wanted them to be masterpieces, and anything short of that would be considered utter garbage. My interest had been piqued by the 1st seasons of these titles, and I was looking forward to what came next. And all I got was an unhealthy dose of bad storytelling. I didn’t expect Severance Season 2 to suffer from the sophomore slump because Season 1 had such intelligent writing, direction, acting, production design, and more.

In June last year, Netflix premiered its Spanish crime thriller Gangs of Galicia (also known in Spanish regions as Clanes), and after an over six-month wait, Netflix Es has confirmed that the show will be coming back for a second season.
If you missed it, the show was about a woman’s father who had been murdered, which subsequently reveals he had led a hidden double life. She seeks revenge and infiltrates a Galician drug cartel to become close to its leader.
The announcement of the renewal for Gangs of Galicia came as a relative footnote from the Next on Netflix event held in Madrid, where journalists and influencers tuned in for the US announcements in addition to showcasing what’s coming up in Spain over the next year such as Aitana: Metamorphosis, Carlos Alcaraz: My Way, A Ghost in Battle, Turn of the Tide season 2, and Olympo.

Just this week, while reviewing Castlevania: Nocturne Season 2, I was talking about how 2025 was quickly becoming synonymous with the “sophomore slump,” and how the people associated with Powerhouse Animation Studio and Project 51 Productions have defied this troubling trend. And while I praised the Netflix animated show for its visual storytelling and compelling narrative, at the time, I didn’t figure out how exactly it avoided the sophomore slump. After giving it some thought, I came to the conclusion that the showrunners achieved the impossible by not centering the show entirely around audience expectations. Everybody loved Lili in Bandidos Season 1; so she became the focus of Season 2, and it flopped. Folks really liked Gi-hun and were obsessed with the Salesman in Squid Game Season 1, and Season 2 gave them so much attention that they forgot to make the rest of it interesting. People wanted to know more about the silos in...

“Sophomore slump” is a term that’s commonly used to describe something or someone who failed to replicate the brilliance that they showcased on debut. I used to think that that was a phrase that people used to mask their misplaced sense of expectations and their inability to judge somebody’s work without unfairly comparing it to what they had done before. But 2025 started to prove me wrong. The first project that seemed to noticeably suffer from a case of sophomore slump was Bandidos. I really liked the first season as it reminded me of the Indiana Jones movies while giving off some Oceans vibes. The second season was just not up to the mark. Then there was Squid Game. The first season was phenomenal, but the second season was disastrous. After that came Silo, which had a pretty solid season 1 and an almost unwatchable season 2; no, seriously, the visuals were that bad.

Director Uwe Boll has a reputation as one of the worst film directors of all time. In the mid-2000s, he helmed a string of well-publicized but critically savaged video game adaptations that immediately sunk to the bottom of cineastes' estimations. In 2003, he made "House of the Dead," and followed that in 2005 with both "Alone in the Dark" and "BloodRayne." He chased those with "In the Name of the King: A Dungeon Siege Tale," "BloodRayne 2: Deliverance," and "Postal" all in 2007, and capped off his run in 2008 with "Far Cry." Fans of the games on which those films are based were incensed that Boll should so clumsily handle the source material, and fans of the cinematic medium were incensed that
Despite his critical reputation, Boll has remained prolific, sometimes helming multiple pictures a year. He directed "First Shift" and "Bandidos" in 2024, and is set to release "Run" in 2025.

Amy Schumer is back with a new movie, resuming her Netflix relationship despite their disagreements eight years ago when she wanted more than $11 million for a stand-up special. The trailer for Kinda Pregnant has been out for a week but has just 55 thousand views (and 1.7 thousand likes) as of Jan. 13, 2025. That's compared to the more successful trailers for relatively little-known upcoming Netflix titles, like Don't Die: The Man Who Wants to Live Forever (509 thousand views), Cassandra (138 thousand views), Bandidos Season 2 (208 thousand views), and one of several trailers for Sakamoto Days (3 million views in three days).
Perhaps this has to do with the lengthy history of negativity towards Schumer, for various reasons. She has certainly had a contentious relationship with her audience (who she refuses to be photographed with in most instances), frequently fueled by social media, that great catalyst of catastrophe.

In 2024, it seemed like the running theme across a lot of Netflix crime dramas was “disjointed families or communities coming apart at the seams due to a criminal act.” I’m not saying that it was an enjoyable trend; I’m just saying that the streaming giant was consistently churning out stories which were following a set pattern, despite originating from all over the globe. Now, we’re one week into 2025, and I’m starting to notice a new trend amongst Netflix TV series and miniseries set in the crime drama subgenre: bloated subplots and bad editing. For starters, there’s Missing You, where the story about breeding dogs and scamming rich people took up more time than the murder and missing person cases. Bandidos Season 2 was so interested in the death of Lili’s father that it forgot to make its treasure hunt adventurous or fun. The breakthrough in...

When Bandidos Season 2 starts, a big jump in time puts viewers in a world many years after the events of the first season. With the specter of the past following them around, Miguel and Lili have built a weak home life together.
The narrative is thrown into a whirlwind of conflict by the arrival of Lili’s stepsister Regina, which disrupts the fragile peace and is motivated by family history and the search for the legendary Tear of Fire, an artifact steeped in myth and legend.
As the story goes on, the stakes get much higher. Regina’s schemes, including the kidnapping of Lili’s ex-lover, Leo, propel the ensemble cast back into the perilous game of theft and deception. The narrative skillfully combines personal stories with big goals, showing a heist and a look at loyalty, vengeance, and how far people will go to reclaim their agency.

Bandidos season two carried on the story of the first season. The group of misfits carried out a heist to rob a chest full of precious objects, and the sale of which could make them billionaires. All the thieves in the group parted ways much richer than before, and the leader of the group wanted to look for “the Tear of Fire,” the biggest diamond in the world. This set the tone for the second season, where all of them come back to look for this precious stone. There are new characters introduced in the show to take the story forward as well.

There were a lot of things that happened in the lives of the various characters in Bandidos season 2 that brought about a change in their perspective. Often, you might imagine your life turning out a particular way. But then time changes everything, and you end up experiencing something so unprecedented that it changes you to the core. [Spoiler Alert] Miguel always knew the kind of woman Lili was, but still, he chose to put his faith in her. In the first episode, we see that Lili goes to save her friend and ex-flame Leo, and Miguel feels betrayed. Ines was still fighting hard to get custody of her son, and things went out of her control once Regina kidnapped Alex. The ending of season 2, much like the previous season, left us on a cliffhanger, and we saw that Lili noticed something engraved on the back of her golden brooch. Though it is...

Bandidos season 2 begins from where it left us at the end of the first season. Apart from Miguel, Ines and a few other people, nobody knew that Lili had not been killed by Miguel in the previous season. Miguel only pretended he’d killed her because he didn’t want Lili to be hunted by the mafia her entire life. Miguel and Lili were living happily when, one day, the latter received a text message, and that was the moment she realized her entire life was going to turn upside down. So let’s find out what happened in Bandidos season 2, and if Miguel and his crew were able to find the treasure this time.

Bandidos Season 2’s ending was centered around the titular group trying to retrieve a precious jewel called the Tear of Fire from the clutches of Regina. Why? Well, the story goes something like this. Lili, whose original name was Carlota, was Regina’s stepsister, and the former had killed Regina’s biological father and gone on the run. After discovering her whereabouts, Regina compelled Lili to use her friends to get the Tear of Fire as a form of reparation. Fearing for their lives, Lili, Miguel, Octavio, Ines, Lucas, and Citlali spent the entire show searching, failing, and then searching some more for this fabled treasure. When they eventually got to the cave that housed the costly piece of stone, Regina, Ariel, Pepa (the gangster who belonged to the Mayan tribe that was the rightful owner of the Tear of Fire), and the landowner whose wife had cheated on him...

Stories about treasure hunting are awesome. Way before I was introduced to the world of movies, I was reading Treasure Island, Sinbad the Sailor, and the purposefully anticlimactic Sonar Kella. Then there were the Tintin comics and the amazing 2011 film, The Adventures of Tintin, that absolutely enthralled me. Mackenna’s Gold and King Solomon’s Mines were brought up in every conversation with my parents so many times that I have lost count at this point. Despite the tacky nature of the franchises, the Lara Croft and The Mummy movies were hugely influential. Animated feature films like Treasure Planet, The Road to El Dorado and Atlantis: The Lost Empire were on repeat in my household. Despite the problematic nature of its lead, there’s no denying the effect that the first 3 Pirates of the Caribbean films had on me. One Piece, the manga and the anime, is another great example. And even...

“Bandidos” (Season 1) is a heist series about the best bandits. There is a bit of historical fiction to add to the story. Juan Morales is an archaeologist who has Alzheimer’s. His son is Miguel, who is an expert in scamming people, and also pursuing a treasure that no one has yet seen or is even aware of. He has a team of the best bandits to go on this adventure, and along the way, many more join the group to find the greatest treasure of all.
This article contains spoilers.
Bandidos (Season 1) Recap: Episode 1: The Map

If there’s a show you’ve been waiting years to return, chances are it’s coming back in 2025. From “Stranger Things” Season 5, which is expected to premiere later this year, to “Severance” Season 2, some of the biggest and buzziest shows on television are expected to make their returns in this new year.
Part of the reason for this big return has to do with the residual effects of the 2023 WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes. Those historic Hollywood effects delayed production across the board. While broadcast series were largely able to air new episodes in 2024, prestige streaming and cable shows — which typically take a bit longer to produce on average — needed a bit more time to bounce back.
But bounce back they did. And it’s not just the “White Loti” and “Andors” of the world fans have to look forward to. Do you love procedural classics? New episodes of...

Netflix’s all-out assault on the Spanish-language content market is paying off.
The latest Netflix ‘What We Watched’ data dump — or ‘engagement report’ in the streamer’s lexicon — shows seven Spanish-language TV shows, including Money Heist spin-off Berlin, were in the 100 most-watched for the January to June period this year. A further three films made the top 100 in that chart, including Society of the Snow (aka La Sociedad de la Niece) at number three with 103.8 million views.

The strategy appears to be paying off when comparing this latest data set with previous incarnations.

I remember watching heist movies as a kid and thinking to myself, Why would anyone risk their life for gold? Why can’t people just work? But then I grew up and began to understand how this capitalist world works. I’d rather that this does not become another one of my commentaries on human greed. I have played the Tomb Raider and Uncharted games, but would I do it for a fortune?
While the possibility is quite tempting to think about, I am quite lazy and will never move beyond the stage where I get off my couch and start planning. There are folks like us who like making money the way society wants us to,...
