In his acidic 1931 satire, Black No More, the writer George Schuyler imagines a world where Black people can undergo an experimental surgery to become white. The depigmentation procedure, invented by an oily scientist, becomes extremely popular. People are eager to escape discrimination and reap the benefits of whiteness. The novel tested theories about assimilation and the color line. If everyone was of the same race, racism and its attendant violence would be eliminated, right?
I couldn’t stop thinking of Schuyler’s novel while watching Amy Wang’s assured directorial debut Slanted. The film, which premiered at SXSW and won the narrative feature competition, has a similar premise. It follows Joan Huang (Shirley Chen of Sundance darling Didi), a Chinese-American teenager desperate to be prom queen. She lives in a kind of Anywhere, U.S.A., a surrealist version of Main Street cleverly conjured by Wang and her production designer Ying-Te Julie Chen.

The 2025 SXSW Film and TV Festival announced its award winners on Wednesday night, with Slanted from Amy Wang chosen as this year’s narrative feature winner.
“This unflinching satirical thriller examines racial identity in a bold and skin-tingling new way. Featuring simmering performances by the cast, this film is both specific to the fractured identity of Asian Americans and universally relatable in its theme of desperately needing to belong,” said narrative feature jury members Clayton Davis (Variety), Rebecca Ford (Vanity Fair), and Ryan Lattanzio (Indiewire) in a joint statement. “The director’s vulnerability in mining her personal experience combined with her delicate and daring filmmaking create a haunting piece that lingers long after the credits roll.”
The narrative feature jury also awarded special honors to Annapurna Sriram for her film F--ktoys and actress Amanda Peet (Fantasy Life).
“Annapurna Sriram is a visionary force, a rare artist whose work is as daring as it is singular.

Whether it’s streaming on Netflix, inside jokes between friends, or viral clips on social media, the iconic series never really went away. It’s the kind of show people just keep coming back to. Of course, having it easily available on streaming has helped, but Steve Carell aka the legendary Michael Scott thinks there’s more to it than that.

From Scratch True Story Explained: What The Netflix Miniseries Leaves Out & Where Tembi Locke Is Now
Netflix's miniseries From Scratch is one of the most emotional and poignant series the streaming giant has produced. The story follows Amy, an American art student (Zoe Saldaña), who falls in love with Sicilian chef Lino (Eugenio Mastrandrea), while living in Italy. From Scratch resonated with Netflix viewers worldwide and became an instant hit. While the love story drew audiences in, it was the show's exploration of the couple's hardships that made it special. After Lino is diagnosed with cancer, the couple struggles with his health issues, navigates the culture clash between their judgmental families, and eventually adopts a child.
Many viewers were surprised to learn that the limited series is based on a true story. Series creators and real-life sisters Tembi and Attica Locke drew inspiration from Tembi's memoir, From Scratch: A Memoir of Love, Sicily, and Finding Home. While some details of their lives were altered for the series,...

Zoe Saldaña starred in a Netflix drama, From Scratch, that flew under most people's radars and now viewers may be wondering if it's worth returning to. From Scratch is a 2022 Netflix show that stars Saldaña as Amy Wheeler, a Georgetown law student who takes a break from her studies to travel to Italy. While she's there, she falls in love with a free-spirited chef, Lino (Eugenio Mastrandrea), and begins to realize that maybe there is more to life than just what she planned for herself. In only eight episodes, From Scratch explores the ups and downs of new romance.
The series premiered in October 2022, and it's not correct to say that it caught Zoe Saldaña in the middle of her hot streak, because it hasn't been so much a streak as an entire career. Since 2009, with her dual roles in Avatar and Star Trek, Saldaña has been one of the...

Like a fine mole, magical realism requires incredible complexity to yield something that is then perceived as quite simple. Fifty different types of chilies become something broadly described as a chocolaty sauce. Sentiment, whimsy, romance, the supernatural and some measure of grounding combine into a mix that even your friendly neighborhood culture critic might only be able to say works or doesn’t. And two people perceiving an identical mélange of elements might respond to the flavor profiles in wholly different ways.
Take, for a purely hypothetical example, Alfonso Arau’s 1992 adaptation of Laura Esquivel’s
Like Water for Chocolate. Already a beloved hit in its day, affection for the movie seems only to have grown since. It’s impossible to quibble with Arau’s tonal commitment, or with the sumptuous cinematography from Steven Bernstein and, in one of his earliest films, Emmanuel Lubezki. But by tipping its magical realism so firmly toward “magical,...

Netflixs From Scratch is one of the most poignant and heartbreaking series Ive ever seen. I dont typically go for romance entertainment, as I generally prefer to be surprised with a solid relationship in the midst of a larger, more unassuming story like that of Midge and Lenny Bruce amid The Marvelous Mrs. Maisels overarching female comic success story, for example. But From Scratchs clearly romance-driven story struck me as intriguing because it was specific and intricate, and because the drama was sold by all-around dedicated performances.

Ben Sevier, president & publisher of Grand Central Publishing, announced Wednesday the acquisition of a new suspense novel by Witherspoon and best-selling author and TV creator Harlan Coben.
The novel is Witherspoon’s debut and is based on her original idea. In addition to writing and publishing the novel, a screen adaptation is also in development.
Witherspoon said in a statement, “To say I am a fan of Harlan’s body of work is a massive understatement … the fact that he found my idea for this thriller intriguing enough to want to partner with me on it as co-author is a dream becoming a reality. The concept of the limited series swept the TV world recently, and it felt like it happened overnight.
It is not an entirely new idea, as miniseries have existed since the time of radio dramas.
However, people lost interest in them at some point, and the era seemed to come to an end.
So much so that in 1991, the Emmy Awards merged Outstanding Miniseries with Outstanding TV Movie.
After numerous name changes to the category, the concept suddenly resurged -- the limited series was born.
With the popularity of American Horror Story, in 2015 they changed the category to Outstanding Limited Series.
TV Shows Should Make Stars, Not Depend On Them
But now, the idea carries almost no weight due to networks and streamers renewing the popular limited series and turning them into plain old series.

Attica and Tembi Locke are re-teaming for another TV series.
The siblings, who already adapted Tembi’s memoir as the Netflix series From Scratch, have signed an overall deal with Universal Television and set up their first project under the pact: an adaptation of Attica’s novel Bluebird, Bluebird.
The drama, which does not yet have a network/platform attached, revolves around Darren Mathews, a Black Texas Ranger who is deeply ambivalent about growing up Black in the lone star state and was the first in his family to get as far away from Texas as he could — until duty called him home.
The Lockes will co-write and exec produce the series alongside Richard Abate, Jermaine Johnson and Will Rowbotham for 3 Arts Entertainment.
“From our first meeting with Universal Television, we felt instant creative alignment,” said Attica and Tembi Locke. “As authors, we understand storytelling across different formats and platforms.

Hello, and welcome to the Scene 2 Seen Podcast. I am Valerie Complex, an associate editor and film writer at Deadline.
Today, for the final episode of 2023 (!), we’re talking to director-writer Cord Jefferson and producer Jermaine Johnson about their latest project American Fiction, which won the TIFF Audience Award. The film stars Jeffrey Wright, Tracee Ellis Ross, Issa Rae, Sterling K. Brown, Erika Alexander and John Ortiz.
American Fiction follows Thelonious “Monk” Ellison (Wright), a respected author and professor of English literature. But his impatience with his students’ cultural sensitivities is threatening his academic standing, while his latest novel is failing to attract publishers; they claim Monk’s writing “isn’t Black enough.” One night, in a fit of spite, Monk concocts a pseudonymous novel embodying every Black cliché he can imagine. His agent submits it to a major publisher who immediately offers the biggest advance Monk’s ever seen.

Academy Award winner and Hollywood icon Denzel Washington is ready to hang up his aged action hero franchise The Equalizer in the upcoming sequel, The Equalizer 3. You know the saying: "It's all fun and games until someone gets hurt." It's something parents used to tell us when we were kids and roughhoused too hard, but in the context of the upcoming horror thriller "All Fun and Games," the adage sounds more like a promise than a warning. Fan-favorite actors like Natalia Dyer and Asa Butterfield are among the cast, and the Russo brothers' production company is on board.
In a press release, Vertical Partner Peter Jarowey called the movie "a gripping debut film based on a high concept idea that caught, and held, our attention immediately." There's no trailer or "All Fun and Games" yet, but the movie does have a...
