Writer and professor Iris (Naomi Watts) can afford to live in the West Village off of Washington Square Park thanks to inheriting a rent-controlled unit from her father. But that sweet deal comes under threat when she’s forced to assume custodianship of Apollo, a Great Dane belonging to her recently departed mentor, Walter (Billy Murray), as her apartment building has a rule against pets.

Discount some of those localized stakes, though, and this adaptation of Sigrid Nunez’s source novel plays more like a standard-issue story about learning to live with grief. Murray is perfect casting for a character like Walter, who only appears in a few scenes. His larger-than-life persona casts a long shadow even in his absence.

There’s a zillion reasons why news stories suddenly spike on the internet, not least given that much comes down to Google deciding when to wave its magic wand. Still, on this site at least, one of the stories that’s really spiked has been the news that Guy Ritchie is shooting a film called Wife & Dog this year.

As we reported here, Ritchie has brought together a cast that includes Benedict Cumberbatch, Rosamund Pike and Anthony Hopkins. The subject matter doesn’t sound too far away from that of The Gentlemen, with basically posh and well-resourced people stabbing each other in the back.

The DreamWorks Animation/Universal Captain Underpants spinoff film, Dog Man, ran away with the top box office spot for the weekend of Jan. 31 to Feb. 2. The Peter Hastings-directed film starring the voices of Pete Davidson, Poppy Liu, Lil Rel Howery, Isla Fisher, and Billy Boyd took in $35 million in the U.S. and with its additional international box office take, surpassed a $40 million global opening.

Per The Hollywood Reporter, Dog Man, based on the original books by Dav Pilkey,has already made back its $40 million production budget. The film’s logline reads: “When a faithful police dog and his human police officer owner are injured together on the job, a harebrained life-saving surgery fuses the two of them together and Dog Man is born. Dog Man is sworn to protect and serve - and fetch, sit and roll over.”

Currently, box office is 14 percent ahead of 2024. What’s the key for February continuing that momentum? For now, it’s originality. At $36 million, “Dog Man” (Universal) grossed substantially over expectations, pushing the weekend to $87 million — better than 2024.

The DreamWorks Animation film had the biggest opening of any non-franchise cartoon feature since 2019 (not counting the already established “The Super Mario Bros. Movie”). To be fair: “Dog Man” is a spinoff character that emerged from the “Captain Underpants” universe. However, Dog Man did not make an appearance in the 2017 “Captain Underpants: The First Epic Movie” (which has been the only one to date) and Universal marketing didn’t note the connection.

Its initial estimate just edges out “The Wild Robot,” which went on to collect $143 million. “Dog Man” also got an A Cinemascore. At a very thrifty cost of $40 million, it’s a major winner for Universal.

DreamWorks Animation’s Dog Man is about a supercop who’s part dog, part man due to a bizarre life-saving surgery. After Police Officer Knight and his loyal dog Greg were seriously injured chasing super villain Petey the Cat (Pete Davidson), medical staff performed a crazy, Frankenstein-style lifesaving procedure, attaching Greg’s head to Knight’s body. And, Voila! Dog Man was born.

Loyal kung-fu fighting Dog Man returns to the streets to take on the bad guys, eager to adjust to his new life with the help of up-and-coming news reporter Sarah Hatoff (Isla Fisher). Sarah’s ready to cover all of his heroic saves and crime-fighting antics. But life back on the streets will not be easy. Dog Man’s greatest enemy, Petey the Cat, is determined to ruin the heroic officer’s life and complete his evil plan of destroying all do-gooders.

Booked at 3,800 theaters, Dog Man is based on the Dav Pilkey Scholastic graphic novels that have sold more than 60 million copies and have been translated into 47 languages. 1. Pushpa 2: The Rule

A sequel to 2021’s Pushpa: The Rise, this Indian action-crime sensation broke box office records, becoming the third-highest-grossing movie in Indian cinema history. Starring megastar Allu Arjun, Pushpa 2: The Rule continues the story of Pushpa Raj, charting his rise in the sandalwood smuggling empire while fighting threats from rival criminals and authoritarians alike.

As it gears up for a busy year of tentpole releases, Warner Bros.’ film division has hired an Amazon MGM Studios executive as its chief business officer.

Ted Lim, who most recently served as head of global strategy and business development at MGM, will join Warner Bros. in a newly created role this week, Motion Picture Group co-chiefs Michael De Luca and Pamela Abdy wrote in a memo to staff on Tuesday.

Lim joined MGM in 2018 from Participant Media, where he served as senior vp strategy and business development, working on investments and acquisitions. Earlier in his career, the exec was part of the corporate strategy and business development team for Disney.

Ted Lim has joined Warner Bros Motion Picture Group in the newly created role of Chief Business Officer, the studio said Tuesday.

Lim joins from Amazon MGM Studios, where he most recently served as Head of Global Strategy and Business Development. Staffers were notified of the hire this morning via a memo from Warner Bros chiefs Michael DeLuca & Pam Abdy, to whom Lim will report.

“Working with our colleagues in finance, streaming, franchise, content sales/home entertainment, licensing, and consumer products, Ted will collaborate with each division to ensure each Warner Bros. Pictures release reaches the widest possible audience beyond its theatrical window,” they wrote. “With this new structure, Ricky Tydus who serves as SVP of Creative Strategy & Film Operations and his team will report to Ted.”

Released 26 years ago, Ghost Dog is an indie crime movie about aging assassins working in a modern-day criminal underworld. Beyond these surface level parallels, Ghost Dog and John Wick share a lot in common — specifically how they humanized their focal assassins and evoked themes of mortality.

Shogun star Cosmo Jarvis has joined the ensemble cast of Guy Ritchie's upcoming movie Wife & Dog. Benedict Cumberbatch, Rosamund Pike, and Anthony Hopkins are also set to star in the film that begins production in the UK this February.

Per Variety, Jarvis boards Wife & Dog, a movie the publication describes as a "return to the colourful, back-stabbing world of the British aristocracy Richie explored in The Gentlemen film and TV series." Ritchie wrote the screenplay for Wife & Dog and will produce alongside longtime producing partner Ivan Atkinson and Black Bear's John Friedberg. Wife & Dog marks the third collaboration between Black Bear and Ritchie after The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare (2024) and the upcoming In the Grey, which also stars Pike.
