Those who live in the Tri-State area—or are masochistic voyeurs of Manhattan real estate—may experience writer-directors Scott McGehee and David Siegel’s The Friend more like a home-invasion horror film than a drama. Writer and professor Iris (Naomi Watts) can afford to live in the West Village off of Washington Square Park thanks to inheriting a rent-controlled unit from her father. But that sweet deal comes under threat when she’s forced to assume custodianship of Apollo, a Great Dane belonging to her recently departed mentor, Walter (Billy Murray), as her apartment building has a rule against pets.
Discount some of those localized stakes, though, and this adaptation of Sigrid Nunez’s source novel plays more like a standard-issue story about learning to live with grief. Murray is perfect casting for a character like Walter, who only appears in a few scenes. His larger-than-life persona casts a long shadow even in his absence.

Abby is a hated character in the game universe and actress Kaitlyn Dever, who was cast in the role, has already faced immense hatred online. Part of the reason "The Simpsons" has become the longest-running primetime scripted series is because it appeals to pretty much every demographic. As Charles Soloman, former LA Times animation critic, said during the documentary "The Simpsons: America's First Family," the show "reminded us that something that's really family entertainment will appeal to the least sophisticated member of the audience and the most sophisticated member of the audience on different levels." If you were an adult, you appreciated the sharp satire and the often strikingly emotional storylines that typically made for some of the best episodes of "The Simpsons." If you were a kid, you loved Bart's irreverence and anti-establishment antics, as well as Homer's dimwittedness.
An added bonus of being a kid and watching "The Simpsons," however, was that its humor often made you feel smarter. You didn't always get the references to "H.M.S. Pinafore" or the...

Actor Dennis Hopper was the kind of artist myths are made from. He was an incredibly talented performer with a larger-than-life personality that frequently got him into trouble. His reckless behavior and intense drug abuse could make him incredibly difficult to work with, and he even tried to get Marlon Brando to fist-fight him after a misunderstanding before the filming of "Apocalypse Now," leading to the two being separated on set at all times. In the mid-1970s, however, he behaved so badly while filming a movie in Australia that he was not only declared dead on his feet and banned from driving a car in the state of Victoria ever again, but he was also kicked right on out of the country.
That movie was "Mad Dog Morgan," a disturbing 1976 outback Western based on the true life misdeeds of bushranger and outlaw Dan Morgan (whom Hopper played in the film). The Ozploitation,...

Starting with the 1975 birth of the series, Mulaney’s star-studded medley began with convincing former cast members Pete Davidson and David Spade that the grimy 1970s was still a glorious time to live in New York.

Written and directed by Peter Hastings, this delightfully manic animated comedy is based on the best-selling series of children’s graphic novels by Dav Pilkey. As such, the film is a spin-off, of sorts, from 2017’s Captain Underpants: The First Epic Movie, which was also based on Pilkey’s novels.
For a U-rated animated comedy, Dog Man has a surprisingly dark beginning. Indeed, it’s basically RoboCop, only instead of a cop and a robot, it’s a cop and his pet police dog (both voiced by Hastings). Sure enough, after an introduction to the crime-fighting pair, they are suddenly caught in an explosion, after which a nurse looks at their mangled bodies and says, “What if we sew the dog’s head onto the man’s body?...

Assassination was to be directed by David Mamet. Then Barry Levinson was hired. And now the legal fireworks are kicking off.
First announced back in late 2023, Assassination is not enjoying a quiet path to production. The project was announced back in 2023 with Barry Levinson at the helm, with the film set to explore ‘the story of how infamous Chicago mobster Sam Giancana arranged the assassination of President John F Kennedy as payback for trying to bring down organised crime after the mob helped put JFK in the White House.’
However, at the time of the project’s announcement, it was mentioned that Levinson had replaced co-writer David Mamet (pictured) in the director’s chair. If today’s report is anything to go by, that transition of power was anything but smooth. Nicholas Celozzi, the film’s other co-writer has now filed a lawsuit against 308, the film’s financiers, accusing them...

Guy Ritchie starts filming Wife & Dog, as Paddy Considine and James Norton lead the latest additions to the cast. More here.
There’s a zillion reasons why news stories suddenly spike on the internet, not least given that much comes down to Google deciding when to wave its magic wand. Still, on this site at least, one of the stories that’s really spiked has been the news that Guy Ritchie is shooting a film called Wife & Dog this year.
As we reported here, Ritchie has brought together a cast that includes Benedict Cumberbatch, Rosamund Pike and Anthony Hopkins. The subject matter doesn’t sound too far away from that of The Gentlemen, with basically posh and well-resourced people stabbing each other in the back.
Ritchie has penned the script, and has just started shooting Wife & Dog as well. Production got underway in the UK this very week.

The unbridled excitement of Dog Man stems from its rejection of traditional storytelling limits. DreamWorks Animation captures Dav Pilkey’s children’s series with wild energy, creating a film bursting with visual chaos and narrative freedom. Peter Hastings directs a work that embraces pure silliness, transforming what could be overwhelming into something truly exciting.
Dog Man opens with a blend of zany humor and genuine emotion. Set in Ohkay City, a world where rules bend and twist, the story follows a character born from medical creativity—part human, part dog. This hero moves with the unfiltered excitement of a child’s imaginative sketch, leaping through adventures that prioritize humor over logic. Action sequences race with comedic momentum, embodying pure childhood creativity: wild, unconstrained, and gloriously messy.

The DreamWorks Animation/Universal Captain Underpants spinoff film, Dog Man, ran away with the top box office spot for the weekend of Jan. 31 to Feb. 2. The Peter Hastings-directed film starring the voices of Pete Davidson, Poppy Liu, Lil Rel Howery, Isla Fisher, and Billy Boyd took in $35 million in the U.S. and with its additional international box office take, surpassed a $40 million global opening.
Per The Hollywood Reporter, Dog Man, based on the original books by Dav Pilkey, has already made back its $40 million production budget. The film’s logline reads: “When a faithful police dog and his human police officer owner are injured together on the job, a harebrained life-saving surgery fuses the two of them together and Dog Man is born. Dog Man is sworn to protect and serve - and fetch, sit and roll over.”

Currently, box office is 14 percent ahead of 2024. What’s the key for February continuing that momentum? For now, it’s originality. At $36 million, “Dog Man” (Universal) grossed substantially over expectations, pushing the weekend to $87 million — better than 2024.
The DreamWorks Animation film had the biggest opening of any non-franchise cartoon feature since 2019 (not counting the already established “The Super Mario Bros. Movie”). To be fair: “Dog Man” is a spinoff character that emerged from the “Captain Underpants” universe. However, Dog Man did not make an appearance in the 2017 “Captain Underpants: The First Epic Movie” (which has been the only one to date) and Universal marketing didn’t note the connection.
Its initial estimate just edges out “The Wild Robot,” which went on to collect $143 million. “Dog Man” also got an A Cinemascore. At a very thrifty cost of $40 million, it’s a major winner for Universal.

It wasn't Wolf Man, and it certainly wasn't Better Man, but Dog Man has dominated the January box office. Based on the children's graphic novel of the same name by Dav Pilkey, Dog Man is a spin-off and story within the story of Captain Underpants, which got a DreamWorks Animated movie back in 2017. In a premise that sounds like kids' first body horror, Dog Man sees a dog's face sewn onto a man's body to become a supercop while going up against many different types of villains.
According to Deadline, Dog Man brought an impressive $35.3 million in its opening weekend based on the estimates (final numbers will be recorded Monday morning). This easily gives Dog Man the biggest opening weekend of 2025 so far, beating out the weekend of Jan. 5, 2025, where Mufasa: The Lion King grossed $23 million in its third weekend of release. Dog Man is the second highest-grossing opening for...

A scene from ‘Dog Man’ (Photo Credit: DreamWorks Animation)
DreamWorks Animation’s Dog Man is about a supercop who’s part dog, part man due to a bizarre life-saving surgery. After Police Officer Knight and his loyal dog Greg were seriously injured chasing super villain Petey the Cat (Pete Davidson), medical staff performed a crazy, Frankenstein-style lifesaving procedure, attaching Greg’s head to Knight’s body. And, Voila! Dog Man was born.
Loyal kung-fu fighting Dog Man returns to the streets to take on the bad guys, eager to adjust to his new life with the help of up-and-coming news reporter Sarah Hatoff (Isla Fisher). Sarah’s ready to cover all of his heroic saves and crime-fighting antics. But life back on the streets will not be easy. Dog Man’s greatest enemy, Petey the Cat, is determined to ruin the heroic officer’s life and complete his evil plan of destroying all do-gooders.

As a gamer, you’ve probably heard of Neil Druckmann. Studio Head & Head of Creative at Naughty Dog, Druckmann is one of the most influential and popular figures in the gaming industry, known for his work on the Uncharted and The Last of Us series. But did you know he is also a topic of great controversy?
The Last of Us 2 is a great example of this. | Image Credit: Naughty Dog
Druckmann’s approach to character design, specifically for female characters, has been something that fans have criticized over the years. A lot of fans believe that Druckmann’s female characters feel “artificial,” and look like they’re a particular aesthetic rather than looking natural. The Last of Us Part 2‘s Abby has been a big example of this alleged bias.

For the first time in 2025, the box office is going to have some sort of pulse as Universal’s DreamWorks Animation title Dog Man is set to send families back into theaters after 2024’s holiday Mufasa-Wicked juggernaut with an opening in excess of $20 million-plus.
Booked at 3,800 theaters, Dog Man is based on the Dav Pilkey Scholastic graphic novels that have sold more than 60 million copies and have been translated into 47 languages. There’s no denying the fact that Naughty Dog and Bethesda are sitting on two of the most anticipated games in the industry right now, The Last of Us Part 3 and Elder Scrolls 6. They’re also both sitting on two IPs that share the same problems; excitement and anticipation won’t wait for the development to happen, and fan interest is turning into fan frustration.
Why Did Bethesda Announce Elder Scrolls 6?
Game development has ballooned in recent years, especially with the PS5/Xbox Series X|S generation, with most Aaa games taking over five years to release. This makes it all the stranger that Bethesda decided to announce Elder Scrolls 6 in June 2018, which in hindsight, was an incredibly poor choice. Everyone assumed it was coming, we just didn’t know when, and with the announcement, everyone assumed that we’d be seeing it within a year or two. How wrong we were.

Even if the John Wick movies have come to an end for the foreseeable future, audiences' appetite for movies about iconic assassins operating in heightened criminal underworlds has yet to be satisfied. Many new action movies tried to copy John Wick's style and success, but to no avail. Rather than watch these obvious imitations, newcomers to the colorful world of action movies and crime fiction looked to older movies instead.
One such movie they should check out while waiting for the next John Wick — whether it's a direct follow-up to Keanu Reeves' blockbuster franchise or a spiritual successor — is Ghost Dog: The Way of the Samurai. Released 26 years ago, Ghost Dog is an indie crime movie about aging assassins working in a modern-day criminal underworld. Beyond these surface level parallels, Ghost Dog and John Wick share a lot in common — specifically how they humanized their focal assassins and evoked themes of mortality.

Shogun star Cosmo Jarvis has joined the ensemble cast of Guy Ritchie's upcoming movie Wife & Dog. Benedict Cumberbatch, Rosamund Pike, and Anthony Hopkins are also set to star in the film that begins production in the UK this February.
Per Variety, Jarvis boards Wife & Dog, a movie the publication describes as a "return to the colourful, back-stabbing world of the British aristocracy Richie explored in The Gentlemen film and TV series." Ritchie wrote the screenplay for Wife & Dog and will produce alongside longtime producing partner Ivan Atkinson and Black Bear's John Friedberg. Wife & Dog marks the third collaboration between Black Bear and Ritchie after The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare (2024) and the upcoming In the Grey, which also stars Pike.

BTS of Dog. The Blackmagic Ursa Cine 12K Lf and Cooke S8/i
It is set in the nineties and so needed a slightly nostalgic aesthetic, but given the amount of time we wanted to be running camera, that led us down a digital path.

Hollywood Squares fans are slamming the game show reboot as an “epic fail.” The show premiered on Thursday, January 16th, a week later than anticipated. Unfortunately, those who had high expectations for the revival were less than thrilled with the outcome. Keep reading for more details on what they had to say.
Hollywood Squares Reboot Slammed As ‘Epic Fail’
Rebooted game shows can be hit or miss. Some do not even get a reboot but rather the torch gets passed. Such was the case with Drew Carey on The Price is Right who took over when Bob Barker retired. Let’s Make a Deal has been in the same boat and faced revival status but viewers have appreciated what Wayne Brady has brought to the table. Then, there are true rebooted game shows such as Press Your Luck. It was a hit in the eighties but Elizabeth Banks brought it...

The PlayStation 5 era of Sony’s consoles has been full of ups and downs as the PS5 has gotten some pretty great games, but also not a lot of them. One particular spot that seems to be lacking for a lot of fans is the action-adventure genre and you probably know where we’re going with this. We need an Uncharted game on the PS5!

Nathan Drake’s adventures are a big part of PlayStation and Sony’s history. The Uncharted franchise was one that brought gameplay and story innovations that are still talked about and compared to today and it feels like it’s the one puzzle piece missing from the PS5.
