HBO Max's Canceled Chuck Lorre Comedy Could Have Become A Classic
Image
Out of all the short-lived Chuck Lorre TV shows that have been canceled rather early and abruptly after a few seasons (like the controversial-ish "United States of Al" or "B Positive"), the axing of HBO Max's "Bookie" hurts the most. Admittedly, it's more of a bummer if you're a long-time fan of the show's Italian-American lead, comedian Sebastian Maniscalco (his early stand-up specials are stone-cold bangers that deservedly made him a megastar in show business), but even if you're not, it's easy to tell that "Bookie" was different from your average Lorre sitcom.

First of all, it wasn't lukewarm broadcast television like most of his productions (which usually air on CBS), but a show specifically made for streaming. That alone gave the half-hour comedy a distinct feel and allowed it to blossom in a playground with fewer limitations. The series needed that extended freedom due to its subject matter and shady characters,...

Why Chuck Lorre's Controversial Sitcom The United States Of Al Was Canceled
Image
Clearly, not everything's gold that comes from the King of Sitcoms, Chuck Lorre. The veteran TV producer and writer might've produced such hits as "The Big Bang Theory," "Two and a Half Men," or "The Kominsky Method," but also had his fair share of missteps. According to some critics and viewers, one of those is the short-lived comedy series "United States of Al," which was created by David Goetsch and Maria Ferrari, with Lorre serving as showrunner and executive producer for the two years the sitcom was on CBS between 2021 and 2022.

The plot focused on the friendship between a Marine war veteran, Riley (Parker Young), and an Afghan interpreter, Awalmir aka Al (Adhir Kalyan), who served together in the same unit while in Afghanistan. Naturally, the show takes place after their service as the two reunite, with Al arriving in the United States to live with Riley and his father,...

‘The Big Bang Theory’ Spinoff Lands Another Star From the Original Series
Image
John Ross Bowie is poised to reprise the role of Caltech plasma physicist and string theorist Barry Kripke in a spinoff of CBS’ long-running sitcom “The Big Bang Theory,” currently in the early stages of development at Max.

An individual familiar with the matter tells TheWrap that because the project has not yet received a series greenlight, Bowie has signed a holding deal with Warner Bros. Television.

The spinoff comes from Chuck Lorre Productions in association with Wbtv. Lorre serve as an executive producer and writer alongside Zak Penn and Bill Prady. Additional details about the project remain under wraps.

Other “Big Bang Theory” alums poised to return include Kevin Sussman, who portrayed Stuart Bloom; Brian Posehn, who played Bert Kibbler; and Lauren Lapkus, who played Denise.

Introduced in Season 2, Kripke became a fan favorite, known for incessantly mocking his colleague and rival Sheldon Cooper (Jim Parsons) and his speech impediment due to rhotacism.

Why CBS Canceled So Help Me Todd
Image
We may receive a commission on purchases made from links.

Does any major network do wacky show titles as well as CBS? I don't think so. It's the home of such creatively, chaotically named shows as "Jake and the Fatman," "Gary Unmarried," "Joan of Arcadia," "United States of Al," "Syzyszynk," and -- my personal favorite, name-wise -- "God Friended Me." The network's wacky titles go all the way back to TV's golden age, but their schedule still features several weirdly named shows today. Without giving each of them a watch, it's hard to tell your "Georgie & Mandy's First Marriage" from your "Bob Hearts Abishola," but one unusually named show made its mark recently with a short but loved two-season run: "So Help Me Todd."

The name of "So Help Me Todd" gives few hints about the show's premise, but it was actually about a flailing private detective ("Pitch Perfect...

Chuck Lorre’s New The Big Bang Theory Spinoff Should Bring Back One Beloved Goofball Character That Only Appeared in 11 Episodes
Image
The new spin-off of Chuck Lorre’s The Big Bang Theory has left fans anticipating what characters will potentially return in the new season after the showrunner extended Sheldon’s story in a prequel spin-off. With the news of a new spin-off fans of the show have shared their hopes for revisiting familiar faces.

The Big Bang Theory | Credit: CBS

Among the many beloved characters, one who truly deserves a comeback in the spin-off is Penny’s ex, Zack Johnson. The gullible yet endearing character, often portrayed as intellectually inferior to the main group, and even Penny at times, would be a fantastic addition to the new series.

Dean Norris Joins ‘Law & Order: Organized Crime’ As Stabler’s Brother
Image
Breaking Bad alum Dean Norris has joined the Season 4 cast of Law & Order: Organized Crime in a major recurring role, Deadline has confirmed.

Norris will play Randall Stabler, the older brother of Christopher Meloni’s Elliot Stabler, in a multi-episode arc. The casting was first reported by our sister site TVLine.

As TVLine previously reported, the upcoming fourth season will introduce Stabler’s brothers Randall and Joe Jr.

Randall, who left the family when he was young and now is a successful real estate developer, has a long-standing tension with Elliot resulting from an event involving their father.

As previously reported, John Shiban replaces Sean Jablonski as showrunner for Season 4 of the NBC police procedural, which is slated for a midseason return. Premiere date Tba.

Starring Meloni, Law & Order: Organized Crime is executive produced by Dick Wolf, John Shiban, Paul Cabbad, Meloni, Arthur W. Forney and Peter Jankowski.

Culture Shift: I’m a Writer Facing Eviction. Do I Regret the Strike? (Guest Column)
Image
For over five months, I’ve stood shoulder-to-shoulder with my union, the Writers Guild of America. Our protest has brought a flawed industry reliant on our creativity to its knees. Our fight, and that of the performers of SAG-AFTRA, wasn’t just about insulating ourselves from AI and other disruptive technologies; we demanded recognition and fair compensation for all of us, not just the stars. CEOs lament financial difficulties and tout profitless balance sheets, but the truth is that top executive salaries are soaring higher than ever. Meanwhile, with rocketing costs of living in cities like New York and Los Angeles, so many scribes, actors and crew have turned to side gigs like Uber driving to cobble together an annual income, echoing challenges faced by workers across sectors plagued by a corporate ethos that idolizes short-term profiteering and unchecked greed.

But corporate greed, in my case, is a snake that bites twice.

Image
Exclusive: Republic Pictures has snapped up rights to The Image of You, a recently wrapped thriller starring Sasha Pieterse (Pretty Little Liars) in dual roles. Pic is set for release via Paramount Global Content Distribution at a date that hasn’t been disclosed.

Parker Young (United States of Al), Nestor Carbonell (The Morning Show), Michele Nordin (Justified) and Academy Award winner Mira Sorvino (Shining Vale) also star in the film from Mpca — an adaptation of the same-name novel from UK-based bestseller Adele Parks MBE, which Jeff Fisher (Killer Movie) directs from a script by Chris Sivertson (Monstrous).

The first project to emerge from a multi-picture deal between Mpca and Parks, The Image of You has Pieterse playing identical twins Anna and Zoe, who share a bond so close that nothing — and no one — can tear them apart. While Anna is romantic and trusting, her sister Zoe is daring and dangerous.

Ashley Nicole Black Exits ‘A Black Lady Sketch Show’

“A Black Lady Sketch Show” will say hello to some new faces and goodbye to an old friend for its next season.

Ashley Nicole Black, who served as a cast member and writer of the HBO sketch comedy series, will not return for the show’s fourth season, which has begun production for a premiere next year. In her place, the remaining core cast members — creator Robin Thede, Gabrielle Dennis, and Skye Townsend — will be joined by three new featured players: DaMya Gurley, Tamara Jade, and Angel Laketa Moore. Black, an Emmy-winner for her work as a writer on “Full Frontal With Samantha Bee” and as a producer on “Ted Lasso,” will next be seen in the Apple TV+ series “Bad Monkey” from “Ted Lasso” co-creator Bill Lawrence.

The sketch series has gone through past cast changes in previous seasons: “Abbott Elementary” creator Quinta Brunson starred in Season 1 before exiting the show,...

Prepare for more Black lady hilarity as Robin Thede’s Emmy-winning HBO comedy series “A Black Lady Sketch Show” has started production on its fourth season.

Created by and starring Thede, “A Black Lady Sketch Show” was renewed in June following a strong third season that netted two Emmys — one for outstanding picture editing for variety programming and outstanding directing for a variety series (Bridget Stokes). The first three seasons of the sketch series have garnered 13 Emmy nominations and three wins.

Variety has exclusively learned that production is now underway in Los Angeles, with returning core cast members Thede, Gabrielle Dennis and Skye Townsend teasing a new sketch (directed by Stokes) set at “Brothaby’s” in this first-look image. Season 4 also boasts three new featured players — DaMya Gurley, Tamara Jade and Angel Laketa Moore — who join in the fun as the sketch series continues to feature “Black women living relatable...

Bob Hearts Abishola has enlisted United States of Al‘s Adhir Kalyan for an upcoming episode — and we can’t help but feel like we’re partially responsible.

Chuck Lorre Bookie Comedy Starring Sebastian Maniscalco Gets HBO Max Series Order

HBO Max has given an eight-episode straight-to-series order to How To Be a Bookie, the first comedy for the streamer from one of Warner Bros. Television’s top showrunners, Chuck Lorre, co-creator/exec producer of HBO Max’s most watched off-network series, The Big Bang Theory. Actor-comedian Sebastian Maniscalco (The Irishman) is set to star in the single-camera series, which Lorre is co-writing with one of his close associates over the past decade, Nick Bakay. It is comedy king Lorre’s first sale since the start of the pandemic.

In How To Be a Bookie, a veteran bookie (Maniscalco) struggles to survive the impending legalization of sports gambling, increasingly unstable clients, family, co-workers, and a lifestyle that bounces him around every corner of Los Angeles, high and low.
