The Marvel Cinematic Universe continues to shake the money tree as the summertime gives way to Labor Day. And, for the fifth time in the last six weekends, Deadpool & Wolverine is the No. 1 movie at the box office. With the exception of Alien: Romulus debuting at No. 1 during its own respective premiere, Marvel Jesus has walked on water and dominated alongside Inside Out 2 in what will go down in history as one of the most disappointing summer movie seasons since 2005! And newcomers like Reagan, AfrAId, 1992 and Slingshot contributed very little to a summer that will end with an estimated total of $3.6 billion when the four-day holiday comes to a close.
So, with the exception of the years affected by the Covid-19 pandemic (2020-2022), 2024 marks the worst summer movie season since Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith opened in theaters back in 2005 (per Box Office Mojo) nearly 20 years ago.

Warning: Spoilers for Batman: The Adventures Continue: Season 3, #5 ahead! The black and red Batman Beyond suit has long been one of Batman's most powerful and dramatic outfits, but until now its history in the Dcau has largely been a mystery. After a particularly twisted tangle with the Joker, however, the origins of Batman's distinctive future attire are finally revealed to have their roots in a failed Waynetech military battle armor. While this origin has been hinted at in previous issues, this latest revelation confirms the suspicions of eagle-eyed readers.
The three-part storyline "Crack-Up!" by Alan Burnett, Paul Dini, Ty Templeton, and Monica Kubina is primarily concerned with a race between Batman and the Suicide Squad to rescue Captain Carl Finley from the Joker, who has renamed him "Straightman" and brainwashed him into acting as his hulking henchman. A third party soon makes a play for Finley as well: a mysterious...

Former President Barack Obama recently released his annual summer jams playlist, and not everyone was feeling the vibes.
Obama’s summer tunes were an eclectic mix, including Migos, Rihanna, Sza, Drake, Lil Baby and Smokey Robinson. Obama also put “Chicago” right next to a Bob Marley track and, for some reason, Masked Wolf’s “Astronaut in the Ocean” made it on the list which confused some fans.
And, well, Stephen Colbert thought he and his team could create a better mix, so they gave it a go on Monday night’s “Late Show with Stephen Colbert.”
Colbert put his usual twist on things with this selection of songs, though. Every title of each (very real) song in the playlist is part of a coded message about lying Republican lawmakers. Yep, the playlist itself manages to take swipes at Georgia Republican congresswoman and conspiracy theorist Marjorie Taylor Greene as well as...

Following a long theatrical run and a month at $19.99, “Tenet” is now thriving at $5.99 and holds the top spot at all three lists that rank by purchases. At FandangoNow, which ranks by revenue, it is #6, the highest among standard-price entries. Best of all for Warner Bros., its normal share of a VOD release is around 70 percent. That compares to the 63 percent it demanded from theaters.
“Tenet” held off two significant new PVOD entries from Universal and Focus, “News of the World” and “Promising Young Woman.” Paul Greengrass’ Tom Hanks western led Apple TV for three days and placed second to “Tenet” at Google Play over the weekend. This comes as Universal’s “The Croods: A New Age” continues its strong presence at $19.99. “News” is #1 at FandangoNow, with “Promising” at #3 on their PVOD-dominated list.

In the 1980s, the crack epidemic tore through America’s inner cities like a brushfire, and it was a devastating scourge. But it also left a seared trail of media images that were more concocted, simplistic, and racially biased than they pretended to be. Remember “crack babies”? The phenomenon of an infant born to a crack-addicted mother, with the infant damaged by (or addicted to) the drug, was something that on occasion did happen, but the news media, using radically distorted numbers, made it sound like an encroaching army of zombie babies. As for crack users themselves, two-thirds of them were white, yet you wouldn’t have dreamed that from the media coverage. Those trumped-up images, like crack itself, did their damage, leaving a residue of hyped sensation the way that junk food deposits chemicals in the body.

Fleet Foxes have released a new video for “Can I Believe You,” a track off their most recent album, Shore.
The clip was directed by Sean Pecknold — brother of Fleet Foxes frontman, Robin Pecknold — and boasts a simple but compelling concept and an alluring aesthetic. In a statement, Robin Pecknold said “Can I Believe You” “draws from the age-old folk tradition of headbangers about trust issues,” and the video plays on that idea: The clip features two dancers (Jade-Lorna Sullivan and Jean Charles), who move around sparse sets bathed in warm lights and colors,...

Climate change has never been one singular enemy. But the ability to fully comprehend the threat of the climate crisis has become nearly impossible as it grows exponentially worse. You can’t just chalk it up to oil spills or plastic bags (not that you ever could) — the climate crisis is as omnipresent as the air we breathe and the food we consume every day. When faced with a challenge so all-encompassing as the rapid destruction of our planet, there’s a temptation to make it all easier to digest...
