Filming on the third season of HBO's Game of Thrones prequel series House of the Dragon begins this month, and we're hearing lots about casting, some of it from official channels, some of it because cast member post pictures of characters lists without thinking through whether that's a good idea. The point is that things are moving, and that's exciting!
We have some more minor casting news courtesy of @westerosies on X/Twitter, who always do a great job of keeping tabs on the comings and goings of the Seven Kingdoms. According to them, Michelle Bonnard will return as Sylvi the brothel madam in House of the Dragon season 3.
Who is Sylvi the brothel madam, you might be asking? Aemond Targaryen (Ewan Mitchell) visited her in season 2; in season 1 we learn she may have been the first person he was ever intimate with. She was around for the food riot...

Netflix's new dark comedy Sirens receives a release date and unveils first-look images. Based on the 2011 play "Elemeno Pea" by Molly Smith Metzler, the upcoming limited series is fronted by Julianne Moore (Mary & George), Meghann Fahy (The White Lotus), Milly Alcock (House of the Dragon), and Kevin Bacon (MaXXXine). Set over the Labor Day weekend, Devon (Fahy) arrives on a seemingly lavish island occupied by mansions and hydrangeas to reconnect with her younger sister Simone (Alcock) but soon begins to notice the eerie signs in Simone's relationship with her new boss, Michaela Kell (Moore).
Netflix shares first-look images of Sirens, confirming the release date of the new show. The images offer a glimpse at Moore's socialite as an animal activist, philanthropist, and wife of a billionaire, who lives a completely different life from Devon. She is seen talking to a gardener, who gestures to her to keep what has been discussed between them.

Few shows can achieve the level of spectacle that Game of Thrones does. Bleeding into House of the Dragon as well, if there is one thing this franchise knows how to do, it is to make an engaging battle. The spilling of blood is nothing unknown to the series; however, the viewers seem to be captivated differently when the casualties are higher.

From the fall of King’s Landing to the Battle of the Bastards, audiences have witnessed storytelling as grand displays within the seasons of this series. However, none seemed to top the hold that the Battle of Blackwater had on the viewers.
With its reputation, it is interesting to know just how much thought went into the making of the series, specifically by someone who wasn’t even supposed to be a part of the show.

In light of the upcoming "Game of Thrones" spinoff series, "A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms," it's worth looking back and reminding ourselves what exactly these seven kingdoms are. Most casual viewers are familiar with the North of course, and they probably remember Dorne as the sexy Kingdom led by Pedro Pascal, but what's going on with the others? And why is it that, when one looks at a map of Westeros, it sure seems like there are nine kingdoms, not seven?
"Game of Thrones" and "House of the Dragon" have both shed some light on the history of Westeros, but probably the most helpful source here is "Fire & Blood," the fictional history book (published by Martin in 2018) that details the first 150 years of House Targaryen rule over the nation. The book, which was criticized as a bit of a cash grab when it first came out, has now become a beloved,...

Netflix’s ‘The Last Kingdom’ has carved out a reputation that places it among the greats, with some even calling it “one of the best in history.” Fans can’t help but draw comparisons to the legendary ‘Game of Thrones,’ and while HBO’s ‘House of the Dragon’ attempts to rekindle the magic of its predecessor, many argue that ‘The Last Kingdom’ already does it and perhaps even better.

Spoiler Alert: This article contains spoilers for Season 3, Episode 5 of “The White Lotus,” now streaming on Max.
“The White Lotus” Season 3 officially crossed over into incest territory during its fifth episode, which featured brothers Saxon (Patrick Schwarzenegger) and Lochlan (Sam Nivola) locking lips during a drug trip on a yacht. Many viewers had already been clocking an incest-like vibe between the siblings, but it wasn’t until Episode 5 that the show took things to a physical level. Executive producer David Bernad stressed to the New York Post that the incest kiss was “not just for shock” value.
“That’s all [creator Mike White],” Bernad said. “Mike is brilliant, and I think those big story turns are not just for shock. There’s a specific reason in terms of the narrative storytelling, and the larger thematic idea Mike is trying to get across.”

George R.R. Martin is the author of the Song of Ice and Fire series, which HBO adapted as Game of Thrones. Game of Thrones was a monster hit that has produced two spinoff series: House of the Dragon is gearing up for its third season and A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms premieres this year, and there are more shows in development. That makes Martin one of the more influential writers working today; even short stories of his that have nothing to do with Westeros, like In The Lost Lands, are getting turned into movies.
And if Martin has his way, there will be more. While promoting In The Lost Lands, Collider asked him what scenes he's written he's most looking forward to seeing onscreen. Of course he named some scenes from the books he's written about Westeros, but he also brought up his 1982 novel Fevre Dream, which is set...

Game of Thrones was such a massive hit for HBO that the network did something it had never done before: made a spinoff. As we speak, the prequel series House of the Dragon is gearing up to film its third season. And there's a new Game of Thrones show A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms on the way.
HBO has developed a number of other spinoff projects beyond that, although a couple have already been shelved; the highest profile project to get put on ice was a sequel series about Jon Snow, which was being developed by actor Kit Harington himself. "Currently, it's off the table, because we all couldn't find the right story to tell that we were all excited about enough," Harington said last year. "So, we decided to lay down tools with it for the time being. There may be a time in the future where we return to it,...

Everyone has heard the narrative principle of Chekhov’s gun — that a weapon shown in a story must eventually be used.
Well, the latest episode of HBO’s White Lotus finally fired its Chekhov’s incest kiss.
The Emmy-winning drama anthology introduced the idea of an incest storyline in its third season premiere when Lochlan (Sam Nivola) ogled his nude older brother, Saxon (Patrick Schwarzenegger).
Sunday’s fifth episode set in Thailand showed Lochlan making out (clip below) with a confused-looking Saxon while the brothers were partying with Chelsea (Aimee Lou Wood) and Chloe (Charlotte Le Bon) on a yacht. Their intimacy was teased at several points during the episode, as Lochlan and Saxon grew more affectionate as they drank and took a street drug.
The reaction among fans has been volcanic: “Oh My God, did The White Lotus just go There? … Incest vibes, drugs, and a full-moon party from hell.

George R.R. Martin is the author behind a Song of Ice and Fire, which HBO adapted as Game of Thrones. He also wrote Fire & Blood, a history of the Targaryen dynasty before the events of Game of Thrones. HBO is adapting part of that book as House of the Dragon; they're gearing up to shoot a new season as we speak. And you get the idea that they won't be taking many suggestions from Martin.
Why? Because last year, after the second season of House of the Dragon had wrapped up, Martin wrote on his blog about his misgivings with how the producers were adapting his book, and warned of "more toxic" changes to the source material being contemplated for future seasons. Martin is an executive producer on the show, so it was pretty extraordinary to see him publicly criticize it like this. Martin eventually took down the blog post...

The move is just the latest to indicate that kids programming isn’t a priority for the streamer.
Max is ready to grow up. That may seem like a strange position for the streamer to take, considering the HBO programming that calls the streamer home is synonymous with having an older audience. But in a bid to refocus the streamer on more adult and family content, Max has purged its library of classic “Looney Tunes” cartoons, the latest turn in the streamer’s ever-evolving rhetoric on content for younger kids.
Key Details: Newer “Looney Tunes” titles remain on the service for now. Max doesn’t view kids’ content as a priority because of its performance metrics. Warner Bros. Discovery also shut down its Cartoon Network streamer Boomerang last year. Sign Up $9.99+ / month max via prime video

George R.R. Martin is one of the most iconic modern novelists. He is best known for penning the A Song Of Ice And Fire series, which has been adapted for the screen as HBO's Game of Thrones as well as the prequel spinoff House of the Dragon. Though its later seasons were poorly received, Game of Thrones remains one of the most beloved 21st century dramas, winning a total of 59 Emmy Awards over its eight-season run. Another spinoffcalled A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, is in the works and set for release sometime this year.
Not all of Martin adaptations are created equally, however. This year's In the Lost Lands adapts one of Martin's short stories, and is performing abysmally so far. In the Lost Lands received terrible reviews, getting a 24% on Rotten Tomatoes. ScreenRant's Alex Harrison gave the movie 2 out of 10 stars, cautioning "don't waste your time" to summarize his review.

Warning: The following contains minor spoilers from George R.R. Martin's Tales of Dunk and Egg novels
A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms: The Hedge Knight is the latest spinoff of George R.R. Martin's beloved world that promises to be closer in style to what made Game of Thrones special in its prime: excellent storytelling and fascinating characters. With fewer special effects and a sharper focus on character development, this show might deliver exactly what Game of Thrones fans have been missing in House of the Dragon.
Martin visited the sets during filming and couldn't contain his enthusiasm. He raved about the performances and how faithfully the showrunners stayed true to his novella. He expressed particular delight in seeing these two protagonists — characters very close to his heart — brought to life with such care and authenticity. Fantasy is one of the most creative genres in fiction. From the supernatural to the post-apocalyptic, fantasy covers many subgenres that explore stories outside the bounds of reality. However, it has evolved significantly over the years, and while there are common genre tropes, plenty of new fantasy series break the mod.
Although fantasy was once most at home in the cinema, streaming television has breathed new life into the genre. Special effects technology has finally become practical enough that creators can bring to life entirely new worlds on the small screen, even on a TV budget. Since 2020, shows like The Legend of Vox Machina, House of the Dragon, and One Piece have brought fantasy to new heights and refined the genre for modern television audiences.

After a year and a half, The Wheel of Time has finally returned with its highly anticipated third season, and judging by its Rotten Tomatoes score, the series is only getting better. Based on Robert Jordan's critically acclaimed book series, the Prime Video adaptation has significantly improved with each episode, garnering impressive responses from critics for both prior seasons.
Set in a high fantasy world where magic is no longer a myth, the story follows Moiraine Damodred (Rosamund Pike), a member of a mystical organization who crosses paths with five young men and women and takes them on a life-changing journey, convinced that one of them is the prophesied reincarnation of Dragon, a powerful entity destined to save their withering world from dark forces.
With Season 3 now available for streaming, its early ratings are already impressive—earning a critic score of 94% and an audience score of 89% on Rotten Tomatoes.

If you had asked Kit Harington about the Jon Snow spin-off right around the time when Game of Thrones was ending, you would have heard a hard no. He didn’t have it in him to star in another Got-based content at the time and he made it clear during an interview with Rich Eisen.
However, he later agreed to a Jon Snow spin-off, although he rarely spoke about it when it was in development.

Interestingly, he only decided to comment on it when he was sure that the spin-off had been shelved at HBO. While Harington didn’t give a clear reason why he agreed to the spin-off, his comments make it seem like he wasn’t entirely on board with the idea.

As Game of Thrones fanatics eagerly anticipate Season 3 of House of the Dragon, not to mention the countless other spin-offs in the works, one HBO original series is the perfect placeholder. In 2005, the premium cable channel unveiledRome, a wildly ambitious and highly expensive historical epic boasting all the large-scale cinematic bells and whistles Game of Thrones has been praised for.
Winner of seven Primetime Emmy Awards, Rome is ranked #90 on IMDb's Top 250 TV Shows and holds a 96% Rotten Tomatoes audience score. Perhaps more timely and topical than ever, the lofty big-budget TV event portrays the final days of the Roman Republic as it is overtaken and turned into the Roman Empire, shifting perspectives from those fighting on the street and those making decisions in their ivory towers. In plainer terms, Rome walked so Game of Thrones could run.

Author George R.R. Martin is best known for his work on the A Song of Ice and Fire novel series. It was adapted into the hit fantasy drama series Game of Thrones, which ran for eight seasons and spawned an equally acclaimed spin-off. However, the franchise will expand with the upcoming adaption of Martin’s Tales of Dunk and Egg novellas.

During a recent interview, Martin discussed working on the upcoming spin-off, which is slated to premiere later this year. The author had some positive words to share about the new series, teasing a drastically different tone from what fans of his work are used to. Game of Thrones propelled George R.R. Martin to new levels of fame and he made a fortune from the TV series. While he is popular among fans as the author of the book, A Song of Ice and Fire, many don’t know that Martin took on TV writing as a career at one point. He famously worked on the HBO series The Hitchhiker, the ’80s revival of The Twilight Zone, and the 1987 series Beauty and the Beast.

If his stint as a TV writer surprised you, then you’d be shocked to know that he was rejected for Star Trek: The Next Generation. The reason for his rejection sounds like a joke considering that he has produced the story for one of the greatest TV shows ever.

This article contains spoilers from Fire & Blood and possible plotlines for future House of the Dragon seasons
In the sprawling, dragon-filled world of HBO Max's House of the Dragon, power struggles and family betrayals often manifest in grand, fiery displays. Yet, amid the spectacle, one of the show's most effective storytelling devices remains a subtle prop easily overlooked by casual viewers: the Small Council balls.
These seemingly insignificant marble-like orbs, which council members place before themselves when arriving for meetings, have evolved into one of the show's most brilliant narrative tools. Far from mere set decoration, these balls are a visual barometer of loyalty, respect, and the changing power dynamics that define the realm as it spirals toward civil war.
The Silent Language of Power Is a Microcosm of Court Politics
When King Viserys I Targaryen (Paddy Considine) presided over his Small Council in Season 1, the ritual had a clear purpose.

Earlier this week, House of the Dragon cast member Steve Toussaint, who plays Corlys Velaryon, sat down to read through the upcoming third season along with his castmates...and posted a list of every character appearing in the fourth episode. The list may not spoil much, but it does tell us a few important things, like that Alicent Hightower's youngest son Daeron Targaryen will officially be part of the cast. I understand why Toussaint didn't think posting something so small would give anything away, but he may have underestimated how wonderfully obsessed this fandom is; he quickly took the post down.
Anyway, the list featured characters both old and new. Some of them are drawn from the pages of George R.R. Martin's book Fire & Blood and some are original to the show. One of the new characters is simply named "Tom." At first, I assumed Tom was just some random supporting character.

“The White Lotus” was a surprise hit when it first arrived back in 2021, offering viewers a look at luxury travel while many remained stuck at home deep into the Covid-19 pandemic.
Now well into its third season, “The White Lotus” is a certified hit series, sitting atop the Samba TV Weekly Wrap Report’s streaming chart for the third consecutive week.
The multi-week run at the top of the chart puts “The White Lotus” in the illustrious company of Max’s gigantic IP titles like “House of the Dragon,” “The Penguin,” and “Dune: Prophecy.” Not bad for a show written entirely by just one person, creator Mike White.
The show following “The White Lotus” is another rare thing in TV, as it is both the product of an IP juggernaut and from the mind of a single creator. That show is “1923” on Paramount+. The western series is one of many...

With Rand (Josha Stradowski) now officially proclaimed the Dragon Reborn, The Wheel Of Time Season 3 capitalises on last season's promising cliffhanger with a gripping, wildly violent opening that might be the most brutal yet seen on this show. Putting most blockbusters to shame, this jaw-dropping start sets the tone for what's to come.
Showrunner Rafe Judkins keeps that momentum up across a range of intersecting narratives more effectively than ever (even if some of the episodes still verge on being too long). Just when the show's signature lore threatens to derail that drive with too much exposition, a new reveal or set-piece keeps the wheel spinning.
Beyond that initial all-female battle — a rarity in genre fare of any kind — Season 3 continues to hone and refine what it does best with a well-earned confidence. It's evident everywhere you look, from the unparalleled costuming and...

House of the Dragon star leaks character list for season 3, confirming newcomers (and who's leaving)
Earlier this week, the cast of House of the Dragon sat down to read through the upcoming third season, which starts filming this month. When we last we left the show, Westeros was at war, with several major clashes just on the horizon. The third season will hit the ground running with a major battle; we expect to see lots of fireworks when the cameras start rolling.
If you've read George R.R. Martin's book Fire & Blood, you have a general idea of how events are going to play out. Still, the cast and crew want to keep what they can under wraps. DC Studios currently shooting live-action feature, “Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow”, directed by Craig Gillespie starring Milly Alcock (“House of the Dragon”), as ‘Kara Zor-El’, the cousin of ‘Superman’, adapts the 2021-2022 eight-issue miniseries by writer Tom King and illustrator Bilquis Evely, told from the perspective of ‘Ruthye’, an alien girl Kara meets, looking for justice:
“…’Kara Zor-El’ has seen some epic adventures over the years, but finds her life without meaning or purpose.
“Here she is, a young woman who saw her planet destroyed and was sent to Earth to protect a baby cousin who ended up not needing her. What was it all for?
“Wherever she goes, people only see her through the lens of ‘Superman’.
“Just when she thinks she’s had enough, everything changes.
“An alien girl seeks her out for a mission. Her world has been destroyed, and the bad guys responsible are still out there.

Alex Garland is a fan of The Last of Us. The filmmaker recently revealed that he believes the HBO drama series to be better than his 2002 post-apocalyptic zombie movie 28 Days Later.
Garland shared his opinion during a discussion with The Last of Us creator Neil Druckmann for Sony's Creator to Creator series. "Let me say this: The Last of Us is better than 28 Days [Later]," Garland said (via GamesRadar+). "The Last of Us is better than 28 Days, or at least the writing is. George R.R. Martin has experience with adaptations. The author watched as HBO adapted his Song of Ice and Fire books for TV as Game of Thrones, contributing a few scripts along the way. HBO is currently in the midst of adapting his book Fire & Blood for the small screen as House of the Dragon. There have been some bumps in that road; after the second season aired, Martin aired out some of his issues with how the show was adapting his book, and the resulting fracas was big enough for HBO to release a statement to calm things down.
And now, Martin is out promoting In The Lost Lands, a new movie based on his short story of the same name. Speaking to Collider alongside the Milla Jovovich and Paul W. S. Anderson, who starred in and directed the movie, Martin admitted that he's gotten "in trouble" for talking about adaptations in the past.

George R.R. Martin is at it again, folks. No, not finishing The Winds of Winter, that would be too easy. Instead, he’s giving us yet another update on his decade-in-the-making novel, assuring fans that he is indeed writing it and that it’s coming pretty well. At this point, The Winds of Winter is less of a book and more of a mythical artifact, whispered about in hushed tones, longingly awaited, yet never actually seen.

Are the outies at the Emmys ready to show Severance some major love after its three-year absence?
Apple TV+'s buzzy sci-fi series currently claims the No. 1 position in Gold Derby's Best Drama Series Emmy odds. Season 2 has been airing since mid-January, with a finale date scheduled for March 21. In 2022, the first season of Severance nabbed 14 total nominations and won two Emmys for main title design and music composition, but it fell short of the top prize. Will it expand the haul this year?

Filming on the third season of HBO's Game of Thrones prequel series House of the Dragon begins this month. We've already seen activity at Leavesden Studios, where they're preparing the sets meant to stand in for King's Landing, the capital of the Seven Kingdoms. Obviously we'll be returning there in season 3, as that's where a lot of the story plays out.
But we'll be visiting some new locations as well. According to @housethedragons, which keeps tabs on all things House of the Dragon on Twitter, the crew is building a set that will stand in for the town of Tumbleton, located in the northeastern part of the Reach, down near the bottom of the map. Tumbleton was already mentioned in House of the Dragon season 2: Kat, the wife of Hugh the blacksmith, mentioned wanting to flee there rather than stay in King's Landing, where things were becoming increasingly dangerous.

There's no question that we're in a fantasy genre resurgence right now, across all forms of media. From hit TV shows like House of the Dragon and The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power to the sheer increase in the number of "romantasy" (a portmanteau for romantic fantasy) books dominating bestseller lists, it seems we're in need of more escapism in our stories than ever before. Being able to plunge one's self into a completely different world with either the turn of a page or by pressing play on an episode of television is a thought that holds increasing appeal in our current climate — but even among dragons and elves, one fantasy world has set itself apart on streaming: Prime Video's The Wheel of Time.
