New York Comic Con is just around the corner, and that means we are going to get word on some upcoming projects we knew nothing about previously. One such project was let out of the bag a little early in the form of Batman Ninja, a brand new, feature-length anime movie that Warner Bros. is working on. Even though the movie hasn't been officially announced yet, Batman Ninja is going to be showcased at Nycc. So the cat is out of the bag.

The movie is reportedly going to be a full-length feature from Warner Bros. Japan and is going to take The Dark Knight into the realm of anime. One reason why the character of Batman has endured for 78 years is that he’s so malleable. The James Bond franchise is at an interesting crossroads. A couple weeks ago, it was revealed that the five studios had entered a huge bidding war over distribution rights. Once Spectre was released, the contract with Sony expired, allowing other studios to pitch themselves to Eon, who produces the Bond films.

It sounds like that isn’t the only interesting thing surrounding James Bond. Recently, MI6-hq noticed a peculiar entry on Bond 25’s IMDb page. According to said entry, the production behind the film is Syncopy. If you’re unfamiliar, this is Christopher Nolan’s very own production company. Now, it’s important to know that a lot of info on IMDb for upcoming films is inaccurate. It’s a great site, but it’s best used as a way to look at already-released films, as anyone can change the info.

Home Entertainment has accepted the MPAA’s “R” rating for its upcoming animated film, Batman: The Killing Joke, choosing to remain true to the landmark DC Comics graphic novel’s violent, controversial story, and making the film the first non-pg/PG-13 rated movie in the nine-year history of the DC Universe Original Movie franchise.

Batman: The Killing Joke, one of the best-selling graphic novels in history, tells the tale of The Joker’s origin story – from his humble beginnings as a struggling comic, to his fateful encounter with Batman that changes both of their lives forever. Actors Kevin Conroy and Mark Hamill reprise their Batman: The Animated Series roles as Batman and The Joker, respectively.

Since its inception in 2007, the DC Universe Original Movie franchise has brought classic and current DC Comics stories and characters to animated life through a series of primarily PG-13 rated films.

Filming is now well underway on the Toronto set of David Ayer’s Suicide Squad, and while recent rumors of Ben Affleck having a cameo appearance as Batman have drawn attention away from the core, villainous cast, Just Jared has pulled the limelight back to the main event by offering up our first look at Will Smith in costume as sharpshooting assassin, Deadshot.

Granted, while social media is already rife with complaints over the page-to-screen interpretation, these stills appear to be from a flashback sequence, given that both of Floyd Lawton’s eyes remain intact. Either that or Ayer’s superhero flick will document the origins of the character, who quickly becomes one of Batman’s primary villains alongside the rest of the film’s ensemble cast.

Will Smith has been snapped on the set of Suicide Squad, and the costume he's wearing has already created quite a stir on social media. It's worth noting though that Deadshot appears to have both eyes here, so this could be a flashback to a time before he was a killer. The presence of a young girl seems to indicate that anyway, and it looks like they're shopping together. Either way, the Gotham City police car confirms where these scenes are set, so that too raises some interesting questions about the movie. For example, could it be that this will be an origin story for the character? News first surfaced on an anime adaptation of One-Punch Man earlier this month with a second report stating that it would premiere later this year in October.  Now, we have details on the anime studio and staff that will be working on the project.  Madhouse, the studio behind great anime series such as Hunter x Hunter and Batman: Gotham Knight among others, is the Japanese animation studio shepherding the project. I’m probably one of the last guys you’ll ever see actually reading any comic under the Marvel umbrella. To be completely honest it’s just personal preference. Batman has a long and illustrious cartoon history with The Super Friends, Batman: The Animated Series, and Batman Beyond serving as a gateway drug to Gotham and the Dark Knight for generations. The Wrap have learned exclusively that due to the current downturn of the home entertainment industry, Warner Bros. has shut down its direct-to-video label Warner Premiere this summer. "Given the continuing decline in the direct-to-video film market and shifting business models in the production of digital series, the decision was made to close Warner Premiere," the studio said in a statement to TheWrap. The site goes on to report that the division will finish production on its remaining film and digital series slate this Fall. Since 2007, Warner Premiere has released Superman: Doomsday, Justice League: The New Frontier, Batman: Gotham Knight, Wonder Woman, Green Lantern: First Flight, Superman/Batman: Public Enemies, Justice League: Crisis on Two Earths, Batman: Under the Red Hood, Superman/Batman: Apocalypse and most recently Superman vs. The Elite. DC Comics just published the first trailer for their animated adaptation of Frank Miller’s The Dark Knight Returns. The first of two parts will be released by Warner Bros. on DVD and Blu-ray Disc in September.

Too bad they went with the “sunday morning” cartoon look for this adaptation and did not hire one of the Japanese anime studios for the design like they did for Batman: Gotham Knight.

Batman is an icon, synonymous with the superhero genre and with comic books in general. However, unlike many comic heroes Batman has evolved, constantly changing to keep up with the times. With Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight Rises coming to our screens in a mere 12 months WhatCulture! is looking back at the changing face of the beloved Dark Knight.

Detective Comics Issue 27 (1938)

The Case of the Chemical Syndicate, issue 27 of Detective Comics saw the début of a new character for DC, the Bat-Man. Following the tradition of pulp detective comics, the Bat-Man was a crime fighting detective who had no qualms in killing his adversaries.

Created by Bob Kane and Bill Finger, the original basis for Batman was a combination of pulp and detective heroes The Shadow and Sherlock Holmes. Visually Kane was influenced by Leonardo De Vinci’s designs for a flying machine that was based on the wings of a bat.

While at Sdcc 2011, Len Wiseman said there’s going to be an anime anthology coming based on “an evolution of these characters in timelines we haven’t seen.”

The Underworld films recount an ancient and ongoing war between werewolves and vampires. The three films to date are Underworld (2003), its sequel Underworld: Evolution (2006) and its prequel, Underworld: Rise of the Lycans (2009). A fourth film, Underworld: Awakening, is scheduled for next January. Wiseman directed the first two films, and he produced the last three films.

The trend for licensed Japanese-animated spinoffs of American live-action films began with The Animatrix in 2003, which coincided with The Matrix Reloaded. The Batman: Gotham Knight project followed in 2008 as a tie-in to the The Dark Knight. Both titles were anthologies, made by different anime studios.

Some rumors were milling about the last couple days about a collector's edition for the upcoming "Batman: Arkham City." Well, it turns out the $99 price-point was accurate, and thanks to an announcement from Warner Bros. this morning, we get our first look at the premium package's content. It doesn't include a plastic Batarang, but there's plenty of great stuff inside.

If you're willing to pay the premium cost, the "Batman: Arkham City" collector's edition is packed full of stuff that should please both fans of the videogame franchise and the comics.

First, there's the collectible Batman statue, designed by Japanese toy company Kotobukiya. I wish the image released by Warner Bros. today had a more detailed close-up of the sculpture, but given Kotobukiya's usually high-quality craftsmanship, I'm willing to bet this will look great next to all your other gaming paraphernalia.

The first trailer for Batman: Year One, the animated adaptation of Frank Miller’s 1987 four-issue comic book arc of the same name, has been released over at MTV, and for someone who admittedly hasn’t read the original material, it looks good.

The film will get its premiere at Comic-Con later this month on 22nd July, and will then be released straight to DVD and Blu-ray at the end of the year on 18th October, so we’ll have to wait until then to see what it’s like.

If the cast who have given their voices to the film are anything to go by, it should be excellent. With the upcoming release of Warner Brothers and DC Comics’ big screen outing of “Green Lantern” about to hit theaters it only makes sense that they would have a direct-to-dvd animated film to get the uninitiated interested in the character and world, and “Green Lantern: Emerald Knights” does the job admirably. “Emerald Knights” is an anthology, much like “Batman: Gotham Knight” that tells six different stories though unlike that film there is a central storyline that weaves in between the telling of each story. Essentially an introduction to some much loved characters, “Emerald Knights” takes the viewers on a journey through the mythos of Green Lantern, while still keeping the viewer interested with some amazing action. Despite James Cameron’s name being plastered all over this film’s marketing, it lacks his quality. Based on a true story, the film is rather interesting in concept than execution.

To support The Dark Knight, Warner Premiere offered up Batman: Gotham Knight, a collection of stories from various animators that were dark and largely uninteresting. It’s gratifying to see that they have learned from this rare misfire and have offered up a companion to this month’s The Green Lantern feature film with Green Lantern: Emerald Knights, on sale Tuesday. There are five stories, largely culled from the comic books, with a sixth tale connecting everything together. Essentially, Krona, the fallen Guardian, has come back from banishment as an enormous, angry form, having coalesced within a star. Summoning Shadow Demons from the Anti-Matter Universe of Qward, Krona threatens the Guardians and their world of Oa.

Green Lantern: Emerald Knights, the latest animated feature from DC Universe, has more in common with Batman: Gotham Knight than, say, Green Lantern: First Flight. Both Emerald Knights and Gotham Knight were released alongside new feature films from DC/Warner Bros. (The Dark Knight and the upcoming Green Lantern movie), there is the obvious connection of their respective titles, and their format is largely the same (loosely connected short segments).

As with Gotham Knight, some longtime fans of Green Lantern may feel that Emerald Knights has little to offer; for new fans who have gained interest in Green Lantern by way of his feature film, Green Lantern: Emerald Knights will be a fitting and welcome introduction to the character, as well as the expansive universe and mythos that go along ...

The discs will include an anthology of six Green Lantern stories, showing Hal Jordan and the superheros policing the galaxy. Jordan, the character played by Reynolds in the live-action movie, is voiced by Nathan Fillion (TV’s Castle), and the show also features the voices of Jason Isaacs (Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows), Elisabeth Moss (TV’s Mad Men), Arnold Vosloo (The Mummy Returns) and Henry Rollins (TV’s Sons of Anarchy).

For animated superhero programs, PG-rated Green Lantern: Emerald Knights has the pedigree of being produced by Bruce Timm, who also produced the animated superhero movies Batman: Gotham Knight, Justice League: Crisis on Two Earths and 2009’s Green Lantern: First Flight.

It’s a pretty good time to be a Green Lantern fan. For decades, the ring-wielding cosmic cop was all but overlooked in media (beyond the comic books) but after several high-profile comic book crossovers – Sinestro Corps War, Blackest Night – he’s finally making a splash in movies, in television, and on the direct-to-dvd market with Green Lantern: Emerald Knights.

Emerald Knights is a follow-up, of sorts, to the successful animated film Batman: Gotham Knight that was released a few years back on DVD. Like that movie, Emerald Knights tells six different, but interlocking, stories, this time within the Green Lantern universe. Today, we’ve got the official trailer and a brand-new image.

We've been following the development of "Green Lantern: Emerald Knights" for a while now, and with "All-Star Superman" hitting shelves this week, it's time to start looking toward DC's next animated, feature-length film.

The first official trailer for "Green Lantern: Emerald Knights" arrived online this week, and you can check it out below:

Debuting over at Yahoo Movies, the new trailer features a host of Green Lanterns taking on various threats and closes with the tagline "Witness The Color Of Will."

In the film, Nathan Fillion voices Hal Jordan, with Elisabeth Moss ("Mad Men") as Arisia, Henry Rollins as Kilowog, and various other notable actors voicing the heroes — and villains — of the Green Lantern Corps.

Late last year, we spoke to "Emerald Knights" producer Bruce Timm about the project, and while he stopped short of calling it a sequel to 2009's "Green Lantern: First Flight," he had this to say...

The first trailer for the DC universe animated film Green Lantern: Emerald Knights debuted today. Emerald Knights is an anthology of short animated films, in the same vein as the Batman: Gotham Knight film that coincided with the release of The Dark Knight. Similarly, this film will be released in the weeks leading up to the live action Green Lantern film on June 17th.

Emerald Knights focuses on the exploits of the Green Lantern Corps, the power ring wielding protectors of the universe. Slight consolation here for Nathan Fillion fans — the Firefly actor was a favourite to play Hal Jordan in Martin Campbell’s upcoming film — Fillion plays Jordan in this animated tale. The film also features Elizabeth Moss (Mad Men), Jason Isaacs (Harry Potter series) and in what could be the most awesome bit of casting ever, Henry Rollins as Kilowog.

Last June we told you about a new animated series based upon the hit television series here in the States, "Supernatural". Though details were thin, we've finally gotten our hands on a preview for you! Dig it!

The Japanese division of Warner Brothers is prepping "Supernatural: The Animation", a strangely titled (oh, those wacky Japanese) 22-episode series from Madhouse, who also brought us Batman: Gotham Knight and of course Death Note.

The anime project will not only remake the best episodes from the live-action version but also depict original episodes not seen in the live-action version. Those original episodes will include prologues of the Winchester brothers’ childhood, anime-only enemies, and episodes featuring secondary characters from the live-action version.

Nathan C. Fillion (‘Firefly”, “Castle”) on a 2010 Top 30 TV series earners with $100,000 per episode has transformed the former soap opera actor into a huge draw for the geek crowd. TV Guide has revealed the lineup of actors who will lend their voices to the next DC Entertainment animated film, and also offer a first look at it's design. Little information regarding the animated feature has been revealed, though last year ufExecutive Producer Bruce Timm offered up a few details about it's storyline: "[Green Lantern: Emerald Knights] focuses directly on the other members of the Green Lantern Corps. It's similar in format to the Batman: Gotham Knight movie we did a couple of years ago, with six individual stories all tied up in an overall arc. It is similar in that each of the individual stories focuses on one of the other Green Lanterns. The movie itself is going to be his origin story, so people will know his origin story and we don't have to waste time with it yet...

Children of the ’80s, your latest nostalgia trip is drawing near. After announcing last June that ThunderCats would return to television on Cartoon Network, Warner Bros. has released the first official artwork and a revised plot synopsis for the series.

The new show will be animated by STUDIO4°C out of Japan. The animators are veterans of anime movies and TV shows, as well as notable western work like the latest Transformers animated series, as well as the Animatrix and Batman: Gotham Knight film tie-ins.

Green Lantern is poised to have a big year in 2011, but the live-action film starring Ryan Reynolds as hotshot hero Hal Jordan isn't the only upcoming project with an emerald hue.

Back in June, word got out about not one, but two animated projects in the works featuring Hal and the Green Lantern Corps: "Green Lantern: The Animated Series" and "Green Lantern: Emerald Knights," an animated movie that many speculated would be a sequel to 2009's "Green Lantern: First Flight."

With both projects poised to make 2011 a very good year for DC's ring-wielding hero, I spoke to producer Bruce Timm to get a few more details about each project.

"[The animated series] doesn't follow the direct continuity of the [live-action] movie or 'First Flight' or anything that we've done before, but it doesn't contradict them either," Timm told MTV News. "They're all pretty consistent in terms of Hal Jordan being the Green Lantern and so forth,...

Tim Daly stars as the voice of Superman After the success of last year's Superman/Batman: Public Enemies, which still stands as one of the most popular DC Universe Animated Original Movies ever made, it was inevitable that producers would eventually create a follow-up. Superman/Batman: Apocalypse, the first sequel to ever be made from the DC Universe Animated Original Movies, is based on the popular comic book story "Superman/Batman: Supergirl" written by Jeph Loeb and late comic book artist Michael Turner, which itself was actually the sequel to the graphic novel that Superman/Batman: Public Enemies was based on written by Loeb and artist Ed McGuiness. The 19-page online prologue, in comic-strip format, is written by Jordan Goldberg with artwork by Long Vo, Joe Ng and Crystal Reid of Udon.

Goldberg was a producer on Nolan's The Prestige, The Dark Knight and Inception, and a writer on animated collection Batman: Gotham Knight.

Inception: The Cobol Job focuses on Dom Cobb (played by Leonardo DiCaprio in the film) and his right-hand man Arthur (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) as they go on a mission that leads them towards the opening events of the movie.
