The Drover's Wife: The Legend of Molly Johnson (2021)

Trivia

The Drover's Wife: The Legend of Molly Johnson

Edit
Based on the play of the same name. Leah Purcell performed the play and released a book in 2019.
Filming for the movie was undertaken during the summer months during the 2019/2020 bushfire season that ripped through the Monaro. A few days after filming in the Snowy-Monaro region had wrapped a massive bushfire tore through the Selwyn and Adaminaby areas, destroying the ski park at Selwyn and the fire near Adaminaby coming within 7klms of the town. The production team had to scramble to remove the wood used as the home shelter.
The story is set in the Snowy Mountains area of rural New South Wales Australia, and much of the filming was done there, mostly around Adaminaby. Cinematography was by Mark Wareham.
Very loosely Based on the original short story "The Drovers Wife" by Henry Lawson published in the 23rd 1892 edition of the "Bulletin." The short story is about A woman in the Outback is isolated in a small hut with her four children. Her husband has been away droving for six months and near sunset one day a snake disappears under the house. The children are put to bed and the woman waits with her dog, Alligator, for the snake to re-appear. Near dawn the snake emerges and it is killed by the woman and dog. The story shows the struggle of a lone woman against nature.
It garnered 13 nominations, including Best Film, at the 12th AACTA Awards (Australian Academy of Cinema and Television Arts) with Leah Purcell winning Best Lead Actress.
