Jennifer Aniston To Star In I’m Glad My Mom Died Adaptation At Apple TV+ — Jennette McCurdy To Write
Image
While we're all still sat here patiently waiting for The Morning Show Season 4 to finally hit Apple TV+ on 17 September, it looks like its star, Jennifer Aniston, is already lining up her next project to star in and produce at the streamer — and to call it a change of pace for the Friends icon would be an understatement to say the least. Per Deadline, Apple has just greenlit I'm Glad My Mom Died, a 10-episode dramedy inspired by child star-turned-writer Jennette McCurdy's astonishing, New York Times bestselling memoir — and Aniston is set to play, well, the mom.

Written, executive produced, and showrun by McCurdy alongside On The Count Of Three scribe Ari Katcher, I'm Glad My Mom Died sees the former iCarly starlet recount her experiences as a child actor not only contending with coming of age in the media spotlight, but coming of age under the shadow of a domineering mother.

‘Don’t Be Gay’ Trailer: Jerrod Carmichael’s New Comedy Special Debuts May 24
Image
Having recently appeared in Yorgos Lanthimos’ “Poor Things,” and the Sundance dramedy “On The Count Of Three,” Emmy-winning comedian Jerrod Carmichael’s career as an actor is still growing and evolving. But the funny man’s bread and butter is still stand-up comedy which he does so well at. So, he’s returning to the stage for his fourth HBO stand-up special, “Don’t Be Gay” later this month.

Interview: Christopher Abbott on Finding Himself in the Irishness of ‘Bring Them Down’
Image
It’s only February, but 2025 is already shaping up as a breakthrough year for Christopher Abbott. His physically transformational turn in Leigh Whannell’s Wolf Man marked the actor’s first time leading a studio film. Just as he contorted his body with prosthetics for Blumhouse’s modern monster update, Abbott ties himself into psychological knots within writer-director Christopher Andrews’s Bring Them Down.

Hearing Abbott sporting an Irish accent and speaking Gaelic may come as a shock to longtime fans of the actor. He was thrust into the public eye in the 2010s through New York’s independent filmmaking community, both on television with Lena Dunham’s Girls and on the big screen through scrappy independent work with the Borderline Films collective. Abbott’s simmering intensity, grounded in his naturalistic and instinctive acting style, routinely makes for the best part of whatever project he tackles. Whether dominating the screen...

Christoper Abbott and Jerrod Carmichael Make a Tragic Pact in This Extremely Dark, Heartfelt Comedy
Image
Editor's Note: The following contains the topic of suicide.Christopher Abbott might be terrifying us with his Blumhouse movie Wolf Man, but in 2022, Abbott teamed up with comedian and actor Jerrod Carmichael for a very different kind of movie. Carmichael's directorial debut from a script by Ari Katcher and Ryan Welch, On the Count of Three, is a tonally intriguing film. Even as it tackles some of the most brutally honest aspects of mental health, the film also has a strong thread of gallows humor running through it. Simultaneously funny and utterly tragic, Abbott and Carmichael's performances and believable friendship are what make On the Count of Three work.

Nadine Crocker on Continue, the Movie Raising Money for Suicide Prevention
Image
We spoke with Nadine Crocker leading up to the release of Continue, an emotionally raw drama film that sees the talented writer-director in front of the camera as well, playing the harrowing and complex lead character. "I think the girl who started that journey and thought she could wear 33 hats was, like, very naive, but I'm really happy she was because it was a fun experience," Crocker recently told MovieWeb.

Crocker plays Dean, an emotionally troubled young woman who is already suffering a self-destructive mental health episode as Continue kicks off. The overall story spotlights mental health struggles and suicide prevention, and the finished product was released Sep. 6 at a pertinent time. "[The producers and I] unanimously were like, 'We need to let this film sit for a little bit until we get to September because that's World Suicide Prevention Month,'" Crocker said. "I knew that that was the time to put this film out.

The Role of Director and Being a Concerned Friend Merged on ‘Jerrod Carmichael Reality Show’
Image
Ari Katcher is a comedy writer. He’s an expert in story structure and instrumental in helping comedians like Ramy Youssef turn their autobiographical stand-up into a scripted series (“Ramy”). He did the same for his close friend and longtime collaborator Jerrod Carmichael as co-creator of the NBC sitcom “The Carmichael Show” and screenwriter of the comedian’s directorial debut “On the Count of Three.”

Katcher is also the co-creator and director of the unscripted “Jerrod Carmichael Reality Show,” in which the standup turned the cameras on his personal life. The show is revelatory in its unbridled honesty that spares no one, least of all Carmichael himself. It also demanded that Katcher be both concerned friend and a goal-driven storyteller, often at the same time.

“I was kind of writing the stories as they go,” he said. “[I was] having to balance what is good for him versus what is good for the story,...

‘Jerrod Carmichael Reality Show’ Is a Bravura Vanity Project That Gives More than It Gets
Image
Jerrod Carmichael has a problem. “I didn’t know it was a problem,” he says during his new HBO series, “Jerrod Carmichael Reality Show.” But recent events have made it clear that it is, in fact, a problem. A big one. What is it? “I only like to do exactly what I want to do.”

You may be thinking, “Wait, what’s wrong with that? Don’t we all only like doing what we want?” Sure we do. Except, not really, and not in the way Carmichael means here. He’s saying he doesn’t like doing things for other people. Like, at all. He doesn’t want to drive you to the airport. He doesn’t want to let you crash at his place for a few weeks. He doesn’t want to do the things friends are expected to do simply because it helps someone they care about.

‘Jerrod Carmichael Reality Show’ Trailer: Carmichael Looks for Love, Sex, and Truth on HBO
Image
Jerrod Carmichael is back on TV, but this time, it’s not NBC’s “The Jerrod Carmichael Show.” It’s the reality TV version of it.

Carmichael leads HBO docuseries “Jerrod Carmichael Reality Show,” billed as a “darkly funny documentary series about Jerrod’s tumultuous quest for love, sex, and truth.” The eight-episode series will debut weekly on HBO and will be available to stream on Max.

Directed by Ari Katcher, the series centers on the Emmy-winning comedian as he navigates his life living in New York City. Carmichael recently appeared in “Poor Things,” dropped comedy special “Rothaniel” on HBO in 2022, and served as the 2023 Golden Globes host. Carmichael made his feature directorial debut with “On the Count of Three,” which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in 2021.

Christopher Abbott's Best Performance Is With George Clooney in This Dark Satire
Image
Christopher Abbott gives his all to every role, and those roles are usually intense. In the dark and twisted Sanctuary, he plays an insecure man attempting to end things with dominatrix, Rebecca (Margaret Qualley). Maybe you know Abbott from Black Bear where he stars alongside Aubrey Plaza in the psychological thriller about a filmmaker creating his muse, or On the Count of Three, which deals with a pair of suicidal friends. He's also acting alongside Plaza off-Broadway in the emotionally-heavy play Danny and the Deep Blue Sea, and is taking over for Ryan Gosling in Wolf Man.

Universal Horror Movie Wolf Man Loses Ryan Gosling, Gains Christopher Abbott
Image
Universal's "Wolf Man" remake, a project that's long remained in various stages of development over the years, is finally rounding into shape. Last we heard, the film was going to star Ryan Gosling as the eponymous Universal monster with "The Place Beyond the Pines" filmmaker Derek Cianfrance in the director's chair, taking over for original director Leigh Whannell (who had proven himself as a brilliant fit in this new Monster-verse with his 2020 reimagining of "The Invisible Man") after the latter departed due to scheduling conflicts. Well, I hope you weren't too invested in that news because it seems the studio has gone back to the drawing board and emerged with an even more exciting version of the movie.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Whannell has found his way back to the production and will once again direct the feature ... with a new leading man in place. Gosling is the...

Image
As SAG protestors set up outside HBO’s Manhattan offices, the network’s CEO and chairman, Casey Bloys, was inside speaking to reporters about the network’s 2024 programming slate. Since the WGA and SAG strikes began in mid-2023, there has been continued speculation about what shows completed production, as well as where filming was able to continue. Now, as the new year creeps closer, fans are itching to know what they can expect to see next, and HBO has kindly provided a few answers.

During a press preview Thursday morning, Bloys confirmed “House of the Dragon” Season 2 would return in the summer of 2024. The series was able to continue filming during the SAG and WGA strikes due to its UK-based union contracts, though the extensive post-production work still means it will be nearly two years between when the first season premiered and the second season is released.

Poor Things Trailer Brings Emma Stone and Willem Dafoe Frankenstein Tale To Life
Image
Searchlight Pictures have released one of the most intriguing and visually stunning trailers of the year in the first full look at the sci-fi take on the Frankenstein principle, Poor Things. As one of the most unique-looking movies of the year, the movie from director Yorgos Lanthimos stars Emma Stone as Bella Baxter, a woman resurrected from the dead by a disfigured scientist (Willem Dafoe), who goes on a journey of the rediscovery of life, love and liberation. Check out the new trailer below.

Poor Things promises to be another glorious mish-mash of genres from the filmmaker behind the likes of the psychological family drama Dogtooth, the absurdist black comedy romantic drama The Lobster, and the slow-burning psychological thriller The Killing of a Sacred Deer. This time, Poor Things will combine sci-fi, romance, and comedy, crafting a beautiful cinematic monster that will no doubt boast another stellar performance from Emma Stone at its center.

You might recognize Christopher Abbott from his new project Sanctuary, where he plays an insecure man attempting to end things with dominatrix, Rebecca (Margaret Qualley). Maybe you know Abbott from some of his other projects, like 2020s Black Bear where he stars alongside Aubrey Plaza in the psychological thriller about a filmmaker creating his muse, or On the Count of Three, which deals with a pair of suicidal friends. Abbott gained popularity early in his career for his part in Lena Dunham's Girls, where he played Marnie's (Allison Williams) submissive boyfriend, Charlie. Through this role, the audience could see his charm and potential that has now flourished into the plethora of interesting and dynamic characters that he has taken on since. Saturday Night Live: Every Sketch From Jerrod Carmichael's Hosting Debut, Ranked
Image
Jerrod Carmichael made his debut as host of Saturday Night Live (SNL) on April 2, 2022, and though he did a great job, not every sketch was a hit. Carmichael is a comedian, actor, and director who broke out in the 2014 Neighbors starring Seth Rogen and Zac Efron. Since then, Carmichael has released three comedy specials on HBO in 2014, 2017, and 2022. In his 2022 special, Rothaniel, Carmichael famously came out as gay live in front of the audience. He’s been on both sides of the camera, having directed and starred in On the Count of Three (2001), a thriller-comedy with an 85% rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

When the comedian appeared on SNL on April 2, 2022, he was not yet a major star and his monologue mentions this. However, after a Primetime Creative Arts Emmy nomination for his guest role on SNL and a spot hosting the 80th Golden Globes on January 10, 2023, it’s clear Carmichael...

Jerrod Carmichael to Star in HBO Docuseries
Image
Jerrod Carmichael will shift gears a little with his next HBO project.

The comedian and Golden Globes host will star in and executive produce a “comedy documentary series” following his personal life. The show’s description brings to mind the low-key vibe of HBO’s How To With John Wilson: It will follow Carmichael “through encounters with friends, family, and strangers, all in his quest for love, sex, and connection.”

“We’ve loved working with Jerrod over the past 10 years, and to watch him discover new layers of both himself and his comedy,” said Nina Rosenstein, executive vp programming at HBO . Rothaniel resonated with audiences in such a profound way, and his honesty and vulnerability are a perfect fit for this original format.”

The currently untitled series will be directed by Ari Katcher, who has worked with Carmichael on Hulu’s Ramy, NBC’s The Carmichael Show and the feature...

Jerrod Carmichael Roasts HFPA in Golden Globes Monologue: ‘I’m Here Because I’m Black’
Image
Jerrod Carmichael opted for brutal honesty as the host of the 80th Golden Globe Awards on Tuesday.

“I’ll tell you why I’m here. I’m here ’cause I’m Black,” he said, opening the show. This was the first Golden Globes Ceremony since the Hollywood Foreign Press Association came under fire in 2020 for controversies including a lack of diversity and unethical financial practices.

“I’ll catch everyone in the room up,” Carmichael continued. “The Golden Globe Awards did not air last year. I won’t say they were a racist organization, but they didn’t have a single Black member until George Floyd died, so do with that information what you will.”

Carmichael then walked the audience through his process of deciding to take the job of Golden Globes host: “I was at home, drinking tea, when I got a phone call from my man Stephen Hill. He said,...

Jared Mobarak’s Top 10 Films of 2022
Image
Following The Film Stage’s collective top 50 films of 2022, as part of our year-end coverage, our contributors are sharing their personal top 10 lists.

Despite being a staunch believer in the idea that every year is a “great” year for [enter your art form of choice], I was getting a bit worried about this Top Ten Films of 2022 list in November. At that point the only film I was sure would end up staying was my current #1 because it was the only film I had thus far given a 10/10 or 9/10 to all year. So, was it finally coming to fruition that I would be the buzzkill declaring it a “bad” year for movies? Had I been sleepwalking through 2022 to the point of being numb to everything I consumed? Or had I just not seen the “great” ones quite yet?

I had confidence that the third possibility would prove true, but there had to be a little of...

Hannah Shaw-Williams' Top 10 Films Of 2022
Image
There's nothing like a "Top 10 Movies of the Year" list to make me realize just how deeply cursed the United Kingdom is when it comes to movie distribution.

"Tár"? I don't know her, and won't get the chance until midway through January. "Marcel the Shell with Shoes On"? Sounds cute! I look forward to checking it out in February, seven months after the United States release. "Pearl"? It would be faster to import the U.S. Blu-ray than to wait for the UK theatrical release in March of 2023. "On the Count of Three"? There's seemingly no intention of releasing Jerrod Carmichael's feature directorial debut over here at all. Somehow, and I don't know how, Brexit is to blame for this.

Fortunately, every now and then, a movie does manage to make the journey across the Atlantic to bless our humble screens. This year brought some true gems from the U.

Jack Lowden in Les carnets de Siegfried (2021)
The 10 Best Films of 2022, from ‘Eo’ to ‘Rrr’
Jack Lowden in Les carnets de Siegfried (2021)
The ten best films of 2022, in five double features:

10. “Benediction” and 9. “Bros”

How does one become a fully integrated member of society — an artist, a lover, a participant in the marketplace of ideas — when that society constantly rejects your very presence and participation? Two of this year’s best took very different looks at gay creatives looking for love and fulfillment, about a century apart; “Benediction,” Terence Davies’ haunting biopic of WWI poet Siegfried Sassoon (Jack Lowden) takes a much different path than the raucous rom-com starring and co-written by Billy Eichner, but both films followed men seeking their heart’s desire in a world that judges that desire. (The exceptional LGBTQ films “Fire Island” and “The Inspection” fit this category as well.)

8. “All the Beauty and the Bloodshed” and 7. “Women Talking”

Laura Poitras’ searing documentary about artist Nan Goldin and Sarah Polley’s screen adaptation of the novel by...

Jerrod Carmichael Named Host of the Golden Globe Awards (Exclusive)
Image
Emmy-winning comedian Jerrod Carmichael has signed on to host the 80th Golden Globe Awards as it returns to NBC next month. NBC, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association and telecast producer Dick Clark Prods. were set to announce Carmichael on Thursday, Variety has learned.

“We’re so excited to have Jerrod Carmichael host the historic 80th Golden Globe Awards,” HFPA president Helen Hoehne said in a statement. “His comedic talents have entertained and thrilled audiences while providing thought-provoking moments that are so important in the times we live. Jerrod is the special kind of talent this show calls for to kick off the awards season.”

It’s a homecoming of sorts for Carmichael, who starred in three seasons of the critically acclaimed sitcom “The Carmichael Show” on NBC from 2015 to 2017. More recently, he guest hosted an episode of NBC’s “Saturday Night Live” in April.

10 Of The Best Directorial Debuts Of 2022
Image
2022 has been a solid year for film releases and there are still a lot of great films sure to end the year with a bang, such as Black Panther: Wakanda Forever and Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery. This year has also seen a great number of directorial debuts, showcasing new great filmmakers and their first major efforts.

With 2022 being the first year of the decade where theaters are open all year round, it was a great time to get back to the movies, but many filmmakers saw their first films debut on streaming platforms. It can be argued that many of these movies deserved theatrical releases, but a handful of 2022's directorial debuts still found their way to the top.

Under The Radar: The Roundup, Resurrection, And On The Count Of Three Shake Up A Sleepy August
Image
(Welcome to Under the Radar, a column where we spotlight specific movies, shows, trends, performances, or scenes that caught our eye and deserved more attention ... but otherwise flew under the radar. In this edition: Rebecca Hall soars in "Resurrection," "The Roundup" hits hard, and "On the Count of Three" leaves a lasting impression.)

You know how it goes. The doldrums of the late summer months typically equate to a similar sense of malaise at the box office. Blockbusters, previously a constant presence at multiplexes wherever you turn, are suddenly nowhere to be seen. Meanwhile, smaller movies languish because if a rising tide lifts all boats, the opposite would have to prove unenviably true. After all, if conventional thought has any merit, the lack of event movies has to mean that there's nothing whatsoever worth going out to support ... right?

Well, the circumstances surrounding the release (and supremely disheartening performance) of...

Jerrod Carmichael Talks ‘On The Count Of Three’ & Not Provoking For Provocation’s Sake [Interview]

While he’s known for the boundary-pushing NBC sitcom, “The Carmichael Show,” and ruthlessly honest comedy stand-up specials—including the “Rothaniel” 2022 HBO special where he came out of the closet for the first time—comedian/actor Jerrod Carmichael is also carving out what appears to be a promising career as a filmmaker. His feature-length dramatic debut, “On The Count Of Three,” debuted at the Sundance Film Festival in 2021, was released theatrically this summer in May via United Artists Releasing, and now the indie is available on Hulu.

Emmy nominee profile: Jerrod Carmichael (‘Saturday Night Live’) could be first openly gay Black comedy acting champ
Image
In the seven-decade history of the Primetime Emmys, the only openly gay Black man to win an acting award has been “Pose” star Billy Porter. Until this year, the only such comedic nominee was four-time supporting contender Tituss Burgess (“Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt”), but he has now been joined by Best Comedy Guest Actor hopeful Jerrod Carmichael. Carmichael earned this recognition for hosting “Saturday Night Live” just one day after the release of “Rothaniel,” the stand-up special in which he officially came out. Since he is also nominated for penning the special, he is in the momentous position of possibly becoming the first openly gay Black male Emmy winner for writing or comedic acting, or both.

Carmichael’s first “Saturday Night Live” hosting gig took place on April 2, 2022, toward the end of the sketch show’s 47th season. During his six-minute opening monologue, he focused on such topics as being a...

Image
Exclusive: UK distribution and production company Blue Finch Films has released a first look image for Vancouver-based directorial duo Cody Kennedy and Tim Rutherford’s horror The Last Video Store as it wraps shooting in the Canadian port city of Hamilton.

Described as a “love letter to the era of the video store”, the film revolves around a young woman who takes a collection of old video tapes to one of the last video stores in the world.

Unbeknownst to her, she is in possession of a legendary “cursed tape” that holds the power to connect the real world with another dimension in which B-movie fantasies are reality. When she and the video store owner unwittingly reawaken its curse, a raft of cinematic villains is unleashed.

Jerrod Carmichael Says Safdie Brothers ’48 Hours’ Remake and Quentin Tarantino Projects Not Happening
Image
With his Netflix special “Rothaniel” continuing to attract audiences, Jerrod Carmichael is on a hot streak. But even during Carmichael’s current rise, there are several projects he’s admitted he’s had to put aside. In a recent interview with GQ, he discussed that “I love getting rid of irons [in the fire]” and at least two high-profile projects on Carmichael’s docket are not going forward.

One of them was a proposed remake of the 1982 feature “48 Hours” Carmichael was cowriting with Josh and Benny Safdie. The project was announced back in 2017 after the Safdies released their feature film “Good Time.” Carmichael would have also starred in the movie, which tells the story of a cop and a convict who team up to catch a pair of cop-killers.

The title refers to the fact that one of the characters, a former cop serving time for armed robbery, is released from prison...

Jerrod Carmichael Explains Why He Spent His Whole Life Preparing to Make ‘Rothaniel’
Image
Jerrod Carmichael was sitting on Bo Burnham’s couch and realized it might be time to come out. “It just kind of hit me,” Carmichael said over the phone last week. “I felt like I had so much to say and standup just felt so immediate.”

The outcome was a routine that eventually evolved into “Rothaniel,” the 35-year-old Carmichael’s mesmerizing and candid HBO special in which he announces he’s gay to an unsuspecting audience. The show, which Burnham directed, transcends the boundaries of the traditional comedy special many times over: It’s a shadowy, almost noir-like one-man show in which Carmichael invites the audience into his psyche, as he wrestles with his mother’s resistance to his sexuality and the broader sense of repression he’s felt in real time. Even the funny bits are tinged with melancholy and soul-searching wonder while Carmichael proves such a personal centerpiece...

Jerrod Carmichael Says Cancel Culture Is ‘Made Up’: ‘The Court of Public Opinion Has No Jail’
Image
Comedian Jerrod Carmichael doesn’t find cancel culture funny — that is, unless you make it be.

During a recent Hollywood Reporter roundtable alongside fellow comics Michael Che, Bowen Yang, Will Forte, and Jake Johnson, the “Rothaniel” stand-up spoke out on cancel culture.

“That’s not real. The boogeyman doesn’t exist,” Carmichael said. “We got to get over that. Like, if you do something wrong in your personal life, you should go to jail. Like, actual jail. And then everything else is like, ‘What are we talking about?'”

Carmichael continued, “If you make art and it causes some contention or it causes some whatever, I mean, that’s part of it, but the cancellation thing, I think that’s just to give boring people something interesting to talk about, like a ghost villain.”

Carmichael also said while on the June 2 episode of radio station Hot 97’s Ebro in the...

Jerrod Carmichael Came Out in ‘Rothaniel.’ Now He’s Figuring Out How to Live That Way
Image
Moving through the lobby of a posh Santa Monica hotel one May afternoon, Jerrod Carmichael is not so much walking as strutting. Tall and slender, he’s wearing a black cashmere sweater, matching pants, loafers, an Afro pick, and an outsize smile. And then there’s the brooch: Stunning gold. Cursive font. The letter R. “I love it so much,” Carmichael says, gazing down to admire the pin. It was a gift from a friend a few weeks ago, for Carmichael’s 35th birthday. Ever since, he’s been “building outfits around it.

Jerrod Carmichael Was Careful With How He Handled On The Count Of Three's Heavy Themes
Jerrod Carmichael in Conan (2010)
When you think Jerrod Carmichael, you think comedy. The stand-up comic and prolific TV performer is known for "The Carmichael Show," "Comedy Bang! Bang!," the "Neighbors" films, and his recent "Saturday Night Live" appearance and special "Rothaniel." Lately the increasingly prolific performer has taken another novel step forward with the premiere of his directorial debut "On the Count of Three." In the film, Val (Carmichael) tries to commit suicide before being interrupted, and enters a suicide pact with his depressive friend Kevin (Christopher Abbott) as the pair experience a number of complications that just keep getting in their way in a...

On the Count of Three (2021)
Can Hollywood ever find a way to handle suicide correctly?
On the Count of Three (2021)
In the dark new comedy On the Count of Three, a difficult subject is tackled with humor but also unusual sensitivity

This article concerns suicide. Links for crisis support can be found at the bottom of the page

After the customary red band MPAA warning that only “appropriate audiences” have their approval to watch the following preview, the trailer for Jerrod Carmichael’s new film On the Count of Three has a second, unusual title card. A trigger warning states that the clip contains “subject matter related to mental health and suicide,” then lists contact information for call line and text line support services catering to those at risk. It’s plain to see that studios Annapurna and Orion have taken a cautious approach to the release of the black comedy, and it’s equally plain to see why; in Carmichael’s directorial debut, he also stars as a dead-end...

Jerrod Carmichael Says Past Jokes About Gay People Were ‘Products of Self-Hate’
Image
Jerrod Carmichael is having quite the year. A month after dropping his HBO special “Rothaniel” and making his “SNL” hosting debut, the comedian, who recently came out as gay, is releasing his directorial debut, “On the Count of Three.”

Carmichael stopped by “The Ellen DeGeneres Show” to promote the film, and the conversation quickly turned to the process of coming out as a public figure, something both comedians have experienced. While opening up about the journey, Carmichael expressed some regret about past jokes he made about the gay community, blaming them on his own refusal to accept himself.

“I’m sure some of the bits and things in my life that I deeply regret were a product of, like, self-hate and denying who I really was,” he said. “So I think the material and a lot of those things– like when I wasn’t talking about myself, I was talking...

‘On the Count of Three’ Review: Jerrod Carmichael’s Directorial Debut Is a Matter of Life and Death
On the Count of Three (2021)
This review of “On the Count of Three” was first published on Jan. 29, 2021, after its premiere at the Sundance Film Festival.

“On the Count of Three” opens with two friends nervously trying to commit a joint murder-suicide, and it’s the feature directorial debut of comedian Jerrod Carmichael. Thankfully Carmichael, who also stars, never loses sight of the real pain at the story’s center, even as he’s also managing to find the laughs.

Working from a screenplay by TV writers Ari Katcher (“The Carmichael Show”) and Ryan Welch (who co-created “Ramy” with Katcher and Ramy Youssef), Carmichael already feels comfortable behind the camera, which should come as no surprise to anyone who’s seen his HBO documentary shorts about his family and childhood neighborhood. With “On the Count of Three,” he takes on a challenging mix of tones, and mostly succeeds as the story segues from the tragic...

Chiwetel Ejiofor, Mads Mikkelsen, Tilda Swinton, Benedict Wong, Rachel McAdams, and Benedict Cumberbatch in Doctor Strange (2016)
‘Doctor Strange 2’ To Continue To Reign, Efron Led ‘Firestarter’ Unlikely To Spark
Chiwetel Ejiofor, Mads Mikkelsen, Tilda Swinton, Benedict Wong, Rachel McAdams, and Benedict Cumberbatch in Doctor Strange (2016)
After dominating the box office last weekend with 84 of the entire weekend’s gross, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness will remain the major story in its second frame. The Marvel Cinematic Universe film, which opened to 187 million, crossed 200 million on Monday (not to mention 500 million worldwide on Tuesday), and it is on the verge of besting the first Doctor Strange’s 233 million domestic cume. By the end of the weekend it should be past or very close to 300 million, with its next milestone being the 369 million gross of The Batman, the biggest thus far this year and the second biggest since the start of the pandemic.

Where it goes from there is the question. Doctor Strange 2 opened within spitting distance of Avengers: Age of Ultron and Captain America: Civil War, and we may not know for another week or two whether its final gross will end up closer...

‘Doctor Strange’ will win 2nd week at box office against ‘Firestarter’ and lower profile releases
Image
This upcoming weekend, Marvel Studios’ latest superhero epic, “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness,” will continue to run rampant at the box office, and it’s likely to be the #1 movie for quite some time, or at least until “Top Gun: Maverick” opens over Memorial Day weekend.

On Friday, Universal Pictures is releasing Blumhouse Pictures’ take on Stephen King’s best-selling thriller “Firestarter,” but it’s not just opening in roughly 3,300 theaters – it will also get a day-and-date release on its Peacock streaming service. The new movie stars Ryan Kiera Armstrong from “American Horror Story” as young Charlie McGee, the titular girl with pyrokinetic powers, while Zac Efron plays her father. It’s directed by Keith Thomas, who helmed the previous Blumhouse movie, “The Vigil.”

The decision for Universal to do day-and-date streaming is an odd one, just because there isn’t much direct competition other than “Doctor Strange.

On the Count of Three Trailer: Jerrod Carmichael & Christopher Abbott Plan Their Final Day of Life
Image
It’s been a long wait for the release of Jerrod Carmichael’s sharp, darkly funny debut On the Count of Three. After premiering at Sundance Film Festival last year, Annapurna Pictures and Orion Pictures have now finally set a May 13 release in theaters and on digital, well-timed after Carmichael’s new stand-up special. Ahead of the release, the first trailer has now arrived for the film which follows Carmichael and Christopher Abbott’s characters as they live out their final day before a suicide pact.

I said in my review, “Considering the raw, uncomfortable truths found in Jerrod Carmichael’s comedy, the logline of his directorial debut shouldn’t come as a surprise: two friends make a pact to end their lives and experience one final day together before plans to carry through with the dual deeds. Though not scripted by Carmichael himself, The Carmichael Show writer-producer Ari Katcher...

Red Band Trailer for Jerrod Carmichael's 'On the Count of Three' Film
On the Count of Three (2021)
"This has been a lifelong thing for me... You don't know that things won't get better." Annapurna Pictures has unveiled an official trailer for On the Count of Three, an acclaimed dark comedy marking the feature directorial debut of comedian / actor / writer Jerrod Carmichael. This originally premiered at the 2021 Sundance Film Festival last year, and it has been waiting to be released for over a year now. The film earned rave reviews from a number of critics; it's a wholly original creation about two friends who just don't want to live anymore. Val and Kevin, two chronically depressed best friends, make a pact to help end each other's life when the day is done. But as the two spend the day wrapping up their affairs, Kevin's need to confront his own trauma sends their orderly plan spiraling out of control. Jerrod Carmichael and Christopher Abbott co-star, joined by Tiffany Haddish,...
