The upcoming epic TV series mixes 7th-century historical content with fantasy and supernatural elements. Prolific Slovakian filmmaker Peter Bebjak has been equally busy working on projects for the small screen. He is currently directing several episodes of the ambitious television series The Slavs, the most expensive Slovakian TV series to the date. It is described as a “fictional reconstruction of a historical period with fantasy and supernatural elements”, inspired by Slovakian and Ukrainian myths and fairy tales. The Slavs marks the first foray into quality TV production within the field of Slovakian audiovisual production. Set in the 7th century in the Carpathian Basin, this sword-and-sorcery story takes place between two hill forts and centres on their business and power interests as well as the pressure exerted on them...

The Cleaner Exclusive: New Concept Art Emerges Ahead of Efm
Back in 2017 one of my favorite pitches from the Frontieres coproduction market was for Jan van Gorkum's horror comedy The Cleaner. In the Dutch production The Cleaner, a dark comedy and horror flick, the central character Barry, a middle-aged unemployed construction worker, discovers that there are monsters living among us. He also discovers that there is an agency hired to clean up after any events and he signs up. Writer/director Jan Van Gorkum also said during his pitch that wants to do most of the effects in shot, which is of course music to any genre nuts’ ears. So. Having won over his favor, van Gorkum has decided to treat us with an exclusive look at a piece of conceptual art. ...

Taylor Kitsch at an event for The Normal Heart (2014)
Taylor Kitsch could be returning to HBO.

The “True Detective” Season 2 star is attached to star in and executive produce a drama series currently in development at the premium cabler, Variety has learned.

In the untitled project, Kitsch would play Chris Klug, a young, family-oriented, drug dealer who catches the wrong end of a bad batch of dope that leaves him in a temporary vegetative state. He discovers that it was no accident and someone close to him was in fact trying to take him out. The story will be told through flashbacks and Chris’ present-day purgatory.

The series hails from creator John Barcheski, who will serve as writer and executive producer along with Robert Munic. Munic will also serve as showrunner. Matt Shakman is attached to direct and executive produce. The series is a co-production between HBO and eOne.

In addition to “True Detective,” Kitsch’s other TV roles...

Attention, Filmmakers Shooting on Film: Here's Why You Need to Preserve Your Work
Leon Ichaso at an event for El cantante (2006)
Read More: Attention, Filmmakers: Here's the 12-Step Guide to Co-Directing In our increasingly digital world, where analog film preservation has become all but endangered, let the struggles of acclaimed Cuban filmmaker Leon Ichaso be a call to arms to preserve your negative prints. An honoree at the Queens World Film Festival this week, Ichaso's esteemed career has run the gamut from Cuban indies specializing in urban realism ("El Super") to cable television miniseries on ShowTime ("Sleeper Cell") and A&E ("The Cleaner"). Unfortunately for the 67-year-old director, not even success could guarantee the preservation of his films' analog prints. As discussed in a recent New York Times article entitled "Filmmaker Won’t Weep for the Cuba He Left Behind," a handful of Ichaso's indies from the past three decades are no longer available due to a lack of preservation and archiving. This fate has met both his 1979 breakthrough debut...

'The Blacklist's' Megan Boone: 'James Spader believes in me more than I believe in myself'
Life on "The Blacklist" is good, if you ask Megan Boone.

And how could it not be? NBC's Monday crime drama is one of the season's new hits, with strong ratings (including those from post-broadcast DVR viewings, where the show has set a couple of records) and positive reviews ... and a breakout star in Boone as novice FBI profiler Elizabeth Keen, who's drawing interest and information from enigmatic ex-fugitive Raymond "Red" Reddington (James Spader).

"I was so elated," Boone tells Zap2it of learning she'd be teamed with Spader, since she was cast for "The Blacklist" first. "He often believes in me more than I believe in myself. I'm expected to carry the show with him, and at first, that was really a daunting task.

"James helped me to know that I could put that energy into the work that we do together. And in doing so, he established a...

Brendan Fraser Saves the Children in Action-Thriller Split-decision
Brendan Fraser has been struggling on the big screen in the last few years after The Mummy dried up and Dwayne Johnson muscled him out of the Journey franchise.  That being said, Fraser has a slew of projects lined up for the next few years; count the action-thriller Split-Decision among them.  Starring as a father who must protect his children from killer brothers after witnessing a murder, Split-Decision doesn't sound like the typical light-hearted fantasy fare we're used to seeing in Fraser's family films.  Hit the jump to see who'll be filling in the roles of Split-Decision. THR reports that Fraser will be joined by Holly Deveaux (Victoria Day), Christian Martin, Daniel Kash (Aliens), Dominic Purcell (Prison Break) and Ethan Suplee (American History) in writer/director Damian Lee's Split-Decision.  Deveaux and Martin play Fraser's children who go on a camping trip with a family friend, played by Kash.  They...

Happy Madison Options Heroes For My Son
Adam Sandler's production company Happy Madison is best-known for producing goofy comedies about manchildren run amok.like the upcoming That's My Boy. So their latest acquisition, Heroes For My Son is raising eyebrows. The non-fiction book by multi-media writer Brad Meltzer is a collection of brief histories about people he hoped would inspire his first-born son. It doesn't actually contain a narrative thread, so Meltzer was as surprised as we are at Happy Madison's interest, telling EW .Here was a non-fiction [book] I collected, with Jim Henson, and Rosa Parks and Mr. Rogers in it. I did it out of pure love for my son, but how do you make a story out of that?. Scribe David Hollander (The Guardian, The Cleaner) has been tasked with translating the warm-hearted aspirations of the book into a narrative feature. Meltzer, who is currently working on a corresponding, inspirational clothing line for kids,...

Who Is Warren Boyd, The 'Extreme Interventionist' Rumored To Be Helping Bobbi Kristina Brown?
Benjamin Bratt's A&E series, "The Cleaner" was based on drug interventionist Warren Boyd, who would undergo extreme measures to keep his clients sober. Many of these clients are Hollywood stars and now, Boyd's name is being linked to Whitney Houston's daughter, 18-year-old Bobbi Kristina Brown.

"When Whitney passed away, literally the first call they made was to Warren Boyd... to come here right away from Malibu, to be here with Bobbi Kristina," Forbes.com columnist Roger Friedman told Access Hollywood. "And he's been with her pretty much ever since. ...

Bobbi Kristina is Ok – Whitney Houston
By Roger Friedman

HollywoodNews.com: You can forget all those stories about Whitney Houston‘s daughter, Bobbi Kristina, disappearing or doing drugs since her mother’s death. I am told that “from the moment” Whitney passed away, the family called in Houston’s drug counselor for help. Warren Boyd, aka “The Cleaner,” has been with Bobbi Kristina “around the clock.”

Many websites that just copy each other, starting — surprisingly– with “The Daily Beast”–are trying to turn Bobbi Kristina into a tabloid heroine at death’s door. The frenzy is remarkable. But pictures and video from the funeral show the 18 year old young woman talking, laughing, crying, and acting–normal. Having Boyd there is extra protection. He’s known for her a long time.

Says my source: “He came right to the Beverly Hilton Hotel, he stayed on the 4th floor with her, he’s been by her side through everything.

Rooney Mara at an event for Millénium : Les Hommes qui n'aimaient pas les femmes (2011)
Rooney Mara is set for her big breakout in the upcoming "The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo," but it's not as if the 26-year old is making her Hollywood debut. That came in a 2006 episode of "Law & Order: Svu," though she seems to rather regret that first big show business outing.

"It was so awful. So stupid," Mara tells Allure of her turn on the show. "Me and my boyfriend -- although I [didn't] look old enough to have a boyfriend -- went and beat up these fat people, and at the end of the show you find out that I used to be obese and I hate fat people. It's ridiculous. Who would ever do that? Who would beat someone up because they're fat?"

A&E Orders Season 2 of ‘Breakout Kings’
As one of the few original scripted series to air on A&E, Breakout Kings became the poster child for abandoned pilots that turned it around. The series also managed to garner enough of an audience that the cable network has confirmed it will return next year for season 2.

For the past few years, A&E has been primarily subsisting on the ‘real life drama’ of its reality series like The First 48 Hours, Intervention and Hoarders. The channel briefly tested the scripted series waters in 2008 with the Benjamin Bratt, Grace Park drama The Cleaner, but the series ended after just two seasons. Recently, however, along with ...

Stunt Woman For Queen Latifah, Jennifer Hudson, Mo’Nique, Viola Davis, Tyra Banks + More Gets Chance To Star
We don’t usually feature short films on this site until they are actually complete, allowing us to share them here. But I thought this one deserved to be an exception.

The story goes… Jwaundace Candece has been a Hollywood stunt woman for just about her entire career in the business, which goes back to 2001. She’s doubled for actresses like Queen Latifah in a fight scene in Bringing Down the House, and again for Latifah is Scary Movie 3, Taxi and Last Holiday, all at Latifah’s request. Essentially, she hooked the sistah up with steady work which is great!

Jwaundace has also doubled for Academy Award winners Mo’Nique in some of the more physical scenes in Precious, likely the fight between mother and daughter towards the end of the film; Jennifer Hudson in Dreamgirls, though I can’t immediately think of what scenes specifically; and Whoopi Goldberg in The Cleaner,...

Steve Landesberg in Barney Miller (1975)
Steve Landesberg: 1945 - 2010
Steve Landesberg in Barney Miller (1975)
Steve Landesberg, best known to television audiences as Det. Sgt. Arthur Dietrich on the '70s sitcom "Barney Miller," died today following a long battle with cancer. He was 65 years old.

Landesberg joined the regular cast of "Barney Miller" in its second season, distinguishing Dietrich from the rest of the Greenwich Village police station's motley crew of detectives by making him the intellectual straight man and a likable know-it-all. Although movie buffs may recognize Landesberg from his recent appearance in Forgetting Sarah Marshall, in which he played Peter Bretter's pediatrician, the veteran character actor portrayed Dietrich on the classic ABC sitcom until the end of the series' run in 1982. Landesberg even reprised the role for the short-lived "Barney Miller" spinoff "Fish," a vehicle for fellow castmember Abe Vigoda.

Born November 23, 1945, in New York, NY, Landesberg's father owned a grocery store, and his mother was a milliner. Landesberg started out in show business doing stand-up, and he also performed with an improvisational group called The New York Stickball Team.

After "Barney Miller" went off the air, the actor did extensive voice-over work, as well as making numerous guest appearances on a variety of television series including "The Golden Girls," "Seinfeld,""Everybody Hates Chris," and a featured guest appearance in an episode of A&E's "The Cleaner." His most recent regular role was Dr. Myron Finkelstein on the Starz original comedy "Head Case," for which he co-wrote seven episodes.

Landesberg is also credited with the quote "Honesty is the best policy, but insanity is a better defense."...

Grace Park talks about Hawaii Five-o and how she got the part of Kona
Grace Park is probably best known for her work on Battlestar Gallactica. Or maybe you caught her on Stargate, The Dead Zone or in the Benjamin Bratt series, The Cleaner. Regardless of where you’ve seen her, you know she can hold her own against strong male characters.

Well, she’s about to do it again in the re-boot of Hawaii Five-o.

She plays Kona, who in the original series was a man. We talked at Comic-Con (in a roundtable format so most of the questions aren’t mine) about her character, how she got the part and more!

How has the character of Kona changed from the original series? Can you talk about who Kona is?

Grace Park: I think Kona adds an interesting element because you could have Hawaii Five-0 be a team of four men and that would be great, but it’s always great to...

Rooney Mara
'Dragon Tattoo' casts its Lisbeth Salander: Have you seen Rooney Mara in previous roles?
Rooney Mara
Rooney Mara just landed the role of Lisbeth Salander in the U.S. remake of The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo. We’ve known for weeks now that director David Fincher had hoped to cast an unknown for the lead role in the hottest literary adaptation in development right now (or possibly ever?), and that’s why we here at PopWatch HQ don’t feel too bad about not having any recollection of seeing Mara on screen beyond the trailer for The Social Network (where she plays Erica). Heck, not even a scan of her IMDb credits could jog our memories.

Emmy Nomination Spotlight: Shirley Jones
You most likely remember her as the mom on The Partridge Family, or maybe Marion the librarian from The Music Man. And though she's been out of the spotlight for a while, the 76-year-old Shirley Jones is still performing. She released an album a few years ago, still sings on stage from Florida to Arizona to London, and she does the occasional acting gig.

Working with her family (step-son David, and sons Shawn, Patrick, and Ryan) on Ruby & the Rockits did not fare too well. But her most recent role, Lola Zellman on The Cleaner, earned her an Emmy Nomination for Outstanding Guest Actress in a Drama Series.

Lola, an alcoholic lounge singer, appeared in the episode called “Does Everybody Have a Drink?” which aired last July. Shirley faces some stiff competition in the category from Mary Kay Place, Sissy Spacek, Lily Tomlin, and Ann-Margret. But our money's on Shirley.

Sela Ward Confirmed to Replace Melina Kanakaredes on CSI: NY; Three More Join Life Unexpected
Earlier today we reported that Melina Kanakaredes was leaving the spin-off series CSI:ny after a solid six-season run. Though her departure may have something to do with the series possibly running its course (after all, the show is moving to Fridays which isn’t a great day for a series to land on), one thing’s for sure: she has quickly been replaced. At the time of our initial report Sela Ward, who played Stacy Warner on earlier seasons of House M.D., was the frontrunner. An official press release from CBS has confirmed she is joining the cast as “an experienced investigator from Washington, DC, whose work is driven by her empathy for the victim.” Her first episode will be the season premiere this fall.

Hit the jump for some casting additions to CW’s series Life Unexpected.

After being on the cusp of cancellation after its first season, we...
