Beetlejuice Beetlejuice star Jenna Ortega expresses interest in joining another iconic ‘80s horror franchise. The young star of Tim Burton’s recent Beetlejuice sequel has only been acting in films since 2013, but she’s well on her way to becoming a horror icon, boasting a filmography loaded with terrifying titles.
Ortega started her horror journey very early on, appearing in 2013’s Insidious: Chapter 2, but then stayed away from the genre until 2020’s satirical slasher The Babysitter: Killer Queen. She began truly establishing herself as a scream queen in 2022, starring in the Scream reboot, Studio 666, X and American Carnage. She was back for more meta-horror in 2023’s Scream VI, following that up with 2024’s Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, her second collaboration with Burton after her star turn as the title character in Netflix’s supernatural series Wednesday.

Borderline marks Jimmy Warden’s directorial debut, teaming up with his wife Samara Weaving for the second time after The Babysitter: Killer Queen; Warden wrote and Weaving returned to the sequel in a smaller supporting role.
With an additional writing credit for Cocaine Bear for Warden, and Weaving’s status as a modern scream queen, a dark comedy thriller like Borderline seems like a match made in heaven. And while it has its moments, the ideas and characters never fully come together.
Samara Weaving in Borderline (2025)/Magnet Releasing Borderline plot
Set in 1990s Los Angeles, Duerson (Ray Nicholson) is a delusional, obsessed fan and stalker of pop star Sofia (Samara Weaving). Duerson believes the two are soulmates, and breaks into her house for what he intends to be their wedding night. Sofia, along with her (kind of?) boyfriend DeVante and bodyguard Bell (Eric Dane), must fight for their lives before...

Ray Nicholson, with his signature inherited grin, has already gone viral for playing unhinged beaus in “Smile 2” and “I Love You Forever.” Now, Nicholson is getting into “King of Comedy” territory with the “violently romantic comedy” thriller, “Borderline.”
The ’90s-set feature, which is “Cocaine Bear” scribe Jimmy Warden’s highly-anticipated directorial debut, is led by Samara Weaving, who plays a pop star stalked by Nicholson’s deranged character. Eric Dane is cast as Weaving’s bodyguard and only hope of escaping the contrived wedding planned by her obsessed fan. Alba Batista and Jimmie Fails also star.
The official synopsis reads: “‘Borderline’ is an edge-of-your-seat thriller that follows a dangerously persistent stalker (Nicholson) who invades the home of a ‘90s pop superstar (Weaving) with grand delusions of a wedding. With her life on the line and help from her loyal bodyguard, she must escape the stalker’s sinister grip before they tie the knot.

Denis Villeneuve is the kind of director actors seek out. Much like his buddy Christopher Nolan (who Villeneuve considers a master of the craft), the French Canadian filmmaker has earned enough name recognition to bring hordes to the theater -- which is exactly what he did with his two "Dune" movies. The supposedly "un-filmable" saga, first told in Frank Herbert's 1965 novel, was rendered in stunning detail across 2021's "Dune" and 2024's "Dune: Part Two," with Villeneuve reminding us of not only why he's one of today's pre-eminent directors, but of his knack for sci-fi storytelling.
Of course, it helped that the movie featured two of today's biggest stars, with Timothée Chalamet and Zendaya in the roles of Paul Atreides and Chani respectively. The pair's involvement ensured the admittedly dense lore of "Dune" wasn't entirely overlooked by younger generations, who flocked to theaters to see the young stars and propelled...

It’s spooky-season which means it’s time for chilly weather, falling leaves and, of course, horror movies. We’re celebrating the genre by honoring those that make it so special with a countdown of the greatest scream queens working today.

Anya Taylor-Joy took over the high-octane, adrenaline-fueled world of Mad Max with this year’s Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, but its her work in the terrifying world of horror that gets her on this list. Starting with Robert Eggers The Witch, the talented young actress went on to showcase her skillset in the genre through a wide range of films while working with some of the most talented filmmakers in the business. Samara Weaving has carved out a niche for herself in Hollywood as an A-list scream queen by appearing in several recent acclaimed horror movies, including 2024's Azrael. After eight years as an actor, Weaving entered the horror genre with 2017's The Babysitter. Although she has landed dramatic roles in award-winning movies like 2017's Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri and 2022's Babylon, much of Weaving's filmography involves the horror and thriller genre. Many of her horror movie roles have been well-received by critics and audiences alike, giving her one of the most impressive resumes of any modern scream queen.
The talented actress' horror resume isn't limited to films, as she starred in season 1 of Starz's Ash vs. Evil Dead as Heather, a hiker who has to survive a demonic onslaught with the main characters. Weaving has been on several sides of the horror genre, playing the final girl heroine, a...

Known for her sharp wit, dark humor, and remarkable talent, Jenna Ortega’s rise in Hollywood has been quite remarkable. Even though the young actress began her acting career at just 9 years old, all it took was one role to really put her on the map. From her breakout role as Harley Diaz in Disney’s ‘Stuck in the Middle’ (2016-2018) to her captivating portrayal of Wednesday Addams in Tim Burton’s ‘Wednesday’ (2022-), Ortega has consistently demonstrated that she is far more than a rising star. Her ability to tackle a range of roles with much depth and nuance has led many to compare her to Aubrey Plaza, but Ortega is carving her own path in the industry. The young actress stands out for her versatility and her distinct ability to bring complex characters to life. As her career continues to soar, Ortega is rapidly becoming one of the...

Warning: This article contains Spoilers for Beetlejuice Beetlejuice (2024)
While Beetlejuice Beetlejuice features a lot of nods to classic Tim Burton movies, the sequel also includes a subtle reference to one of star Jenna Ortegas other major roles. Jenna Ortega has made a name for herself as a horror icon in recent years, beginning with her supporting role in 2020s The Babysitter: Killer Queen. This was followed by a role in 2022s Ti West slasher X and a lead role in 2022s Scream, a reboot of the iconic meta-slasher series. Later that year, Ortega cemented her genre legend status with Tim Burtons Addams Family spinoff Wednesday.

A new sci-fi book-to-movie adaptation, Uglies, was just released on Netflix, and it is the perfect excuse to revisit one of Jenna Ortega's most underrated movies. Uglies is a brand-new sci-fi action movie starring Joey King, Brianne Tju, Chase Stokes, and Laverne Cox that is based on a 2005 young adult book series by Scott Westerfield. Uglies takes place in a dystopian future where individuals undergo intense cosmetic surgery to become more attractive. However, as 16-year-old Tally's procedure nears, she discovers what life is like outside of society's beauty standards.
Uglies is a particularly exciting release for Netflix. Not only does the film have a star-studded cast, but it also has a pre-existing fan base due to Westerfield's 2005 book. On top of that, Uglies was also in the works for nearly a decade before releasing. Though the movie was optioned in 2006, it took eight years to get it made. Now,...

The quality of actress Jenna Ortega's movies has ranged from great, like The Babysitter: Killer Queen, to less-than-stellar, like Saving Flora. Ortega rose to stardom with the title role in the Netflix supernatural dramedy series Wednesday, a role that scored her Golden Globe and Screen Actors Guild Award nominations, but shes been acting since 2012. The actress has appeared in both big-budget blockbusters like Beetlejuice Beetlejuice and smaller indie films like Wyrm and The Fallout. Her roles in horror films like X, Insidious: Chapter 2, and the Scream franchise have earned her a place in the scream queen pantheon.
Wednesday Addams is the role that defines Ortegas career, but shes played a wide variety of characters. In addition to playing the Addams Familys morose daughter in her own TV spin-off, Ortega has played a school shooting survivor, an adult film star, and a Scream final girl who broke the trope in feature-length movies.

Even though Jenna Ortega is the star of recent Tim Burton projects like Wednesday and Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, that doesn't mean she's earned every role she auditioned for with the celebrated filmmaker.
In fact, the actor sat down with Beetlejuice Beetlejuice co-star Michael Keaton as part of GQ's Epic Conversation series, and she reminisced about an audition for a Burton project that she failed to get. The role was in Burton's 2019 live-action adaptation of Dumbo, a film that also stars Keaton and which was the director's return to the industry after a three-year absence. Per Ortega's statement:
"I remember auditioning for Dumbo. I actually auditioned for Dumbo. I was like fourteen or something like that, and I was so excited. I couldnt believe that Tim was making a movie; it had been a minute. I was like, 'Ah man, this would just be an incredible opportunity.

It's not always knives, axes, and machetes in the horror genre. Sometimes the villains go about their killings in truly bizarre ways. There are death scenes that are just plain weird, while at the same time, insanely entertaining. These are the deaths that cause the audience to pause and try to figure out the logic of the death. Maybe they even make the viewer laugh because they're so out of the box.
When it comes to weird horror movie deaths, they're not necessarily kills that are brutal or creative. After all, there are plenty of deaths to choose from, like the memorable blender scene in You're Next or the surfboard decapitation in The Babysitter: Killer Queen. Strange horror movie deaths can certainly have elements of gore and uniqueness, but above all, they're meant to be bizarre and kind of head-scratching.

Beetlejuice Beetlejuice is a sequel many fans have wanted for over 35 years. Making a sequel to the iconic 1988 film would always be a risk, but director Tim Burton managed to secure most of the original cast. Bringing back staples like Michael Keaton and Winona Ryder gave the movie a solid foundation, but the sequel also brought in several new actors to help flesh out the exciting cast.
One of the biggest additions to the cast of Beetlejuice Beetlejuice is modern scream queen, Jenna Ortega. Ortega knows her way around a horror set. She's starred in two Scream movies (Scream 2022 and Scream VI), X (2022), The Babysitter: Killer Queen (2020), and Netflix's hit shows, Wednesday and You.

Before these two Tim Burton projects, Ortega had roles in several other Netflix films and a television show as well as separate feature films. She got her start in a Colgate toothpaste commercial and then a Disney Channel show that mirrored the aspect of her big family.

"Taste" is the third music video from Carpenter's "Short n' Sweet" album, which was released on August 23, 2024. Her previous two singles, "Espresso" and "Please Please Please" feature highly stylized music videos that show Carpenter's flirtatious persona often causing trouble in a camp yet seductive way. "Taste" is no exception to the trend.
"Taste" continues the "Short n' Sweet" story by referencing Carpenter's two previous music videos: the lipstick she uses being from "Espresso" and the kiss on the duct tape being a callback to "Please Please Please". Along with this, "Taste" also references some of the best horror comedy movies,...

Like Rian Johnson’s Knives Out Mysteries franchise, casting for Mike White’s The White Lotus is always an event. Fans love to speculate who could join the cast of White’s award-winning series, and now Conan O’Brien wants to put his fiery red quaff in the ring. According to legend, O’Brien bumped into White in a restaurant, and the two started talking about The White Lotus Season 3. O’Brien offered to appear on the show, wanting to be a part of White’s hit project, though his proposed role could raise an eyebrow or two.
Speaking with Walton Goggins for episode 19 of Conan’s podcast, Conan O’Brien Needs a Friend, the former late-night host recapped his run-in with White, telling Goggins, “Before you guys started shooting The White Lotus, I ran into none other than Mike White in a restaurant. Samara Weaving's success in horror movies like The Babysitter and Ready Or Not cements her as a contemporary scream queen. Weaving's return to supernatural horror in Azrael after a break showcases her range and dedication to the genre. Fans eagerly await news of a potential sequel to Ready Or Not, building on the success and acclaim of the original film.
Although Azrael looks like a fun showcase for star Samara Weaving, its trailer has just reminded me how much I want to see a follow-up to 2019s Ready Or Not. Samara Weaving has an impressive career, with some of the stars biggest hits being horror movies. Ash Vs Evil Dead gave Weaving an early minor role, but it was 2017s The Babysitter that made her a star. Weaving dominated that horror-comedy as the titular babysitter, a murderous monster who managed to be both funny and appealing while also convincing as a demonic villain.

Not all horror villains are successful murderers; some like Ghostface from Scream and Annabelle relied on others for their kills. Mister Babadook and Lubdan the Leprechaun were terrifying but ultimately terrible at actually killing their intended victims. The Beast from Poltergeist failed to capitalize on opportunities to kill, making them more of a menacing presence than an effective killer.
Horror villains have kept audiences on the edge of their seats and fearing for their lives, but some were simply terrible at actually killing their victims. The best horror movies have introduced all kinds of villains to audiences, from the intelligent and sneaky to the brutally violent. These titles became known as the slasher film subgenre, focused explicitly on gruesome deaths, and became a hugely popular subgenre. Samara Weaving has earned modern scream queen status with roles in films like The Babysitter, The Babysitter: Killer Queen, Mayhem, Ready or Not, Scream VI, and the upcoming horror action movie Azrael, plus a few episodes of the Ash vs. Evil Dead TV series. Since Weaving has worked in both the Scream and Evil Dead franchises, she was asked during a new interview with Collider which horror franchise she would like to be a part of next. Her answer: Nightmare on Elm Street.
The filmmakers behind Azrael had originally wanted to cast Billie Eilish in the role Weaving ended up playing. So when she was asked the horror franchise question, she said, “Nightmare on Elm Street. I can do it. Unless Billie Eilish gets it now.“

Jenna Ortega's recent underperforming projects have put more pressure on her upcoming movie "Death Of A Unicorn" to succeed. Ortega's impressive streak of horror roles runs the risk of typecasting her, and branching out into other genres would be beneficial for her career. "Death Of A Unicorn" has the potential to showcase Ortega's comedy chops and could be a great opportunity for her to prove herself in relevant, original projects.
An upcoming Jenna Ortega movie is under more pressure now that two of her recent projects, Finestkind and Miller's Girl, underperformed. By any metric, Ortega has been experiencing an extraordinary career. The actress was always destined for stardom since her first movie role in 2013’s Iron Man 3. Nonetheless, she made a string of ingenious career decisions from 2020 to 2023. Ortega parlayed a supporting role in The Babysitter: Killer Queen into lead parts in both X and Scream, two acclaimed 2022 slasher movies.

Wednesday season 2 faces higher expectations and pressure due to the success of season 1 and Jenna Ortega's popularity. Similar to Stranger Things season 2, Wednesday season 2 will need to meet the challenge of getting the story right and maintaining success. It would be safe to say that Jenna has joined the league of Millie Bobby Brown, Billie Eilish, and other young artists who’ve achieved milestones at such a young age. Consider the career of one Joseph McGinty Nichol, better known by the nom de plume McG. This is a man whose directorial debut as a feature filmmaker in 2000 was the paradigm-shifting, zeitgeist-grabbing, new millennium bar-setter "Charlie's Angels." Sit with that for a moment. His next film? The extraordinary sequel "Full Throttle." Mind you these were gigs that star and producer Drew Barrymore personally sought out McG for based on the music videos he made for the band Sugar Ray. One of the more significant sliding doors moments in modern American history is the fact that McG was the original frontman for the band that would become Sugar Ray, before humbly realizing his talents lay elsewhere and convincing high school buddy Mark McGrath to take over.
McG helped launch and executive produce both "The Oc" and "Supernatural," he produced "Pussycat Dolls Present: The Search for the Next Doll" and "Pussycat Dolls Present: Girlicious,...

Filmed near the end of 2015, director McG’s horror comedy The Babysitter was released through the Netflix streaming service during the Halloween season of 2017 – and not only did it help establish Samara Weaving as a modern genre icon, it also did well enough to spawn a sequel. The Babysitter: Killer Queen was released by Netflix in September of 2020. Three years later (and eight years after he was in production on the first film), McG has confirmed to ComicBook.com that he’s still interested in making The Babysitter 3!
McG said, “We’re still talking about it. It was fun. The first movie, obviously, gave Samara Weaving to the world, and the second movie was Jenna Ortega. Hopefully we can answer the call and find a third star that reaches those lofty heights.“
The director previously told our friends at Bloody Disgusting, “There have always been three beats to this story. There’s the first beat,...

Released in 2020, The Babysitter: Killer Queen was a sequel to 2017’s The Babysitter, bringing back the main players to continue the tale of a young man and his struggles with a devil-worshiping cult that just can’t seem to die. The post-credits scene showed that the Devil’s Book is still hanging around, but does that mean a third movie is in the works?
According to director McG, who helmed both The Babysitter and The Babysitter: Killer Queen, the possibility of a third film in the franchise is very much still on the table.
“Yeah, we’re still talking about it,” McG tells ComicBook.com. “It was fun. The first movie, obviously, gave Samara Weaving to the world, and the second movie was Jenna Ortega. Hopefully we can answer the call and find a third star that reaches those lofty heights.”

According to director McG, his hit horror films The Babysitter and The Babysitter: Killer Queen could turn into a trilogy, as he hasn't given up hope on a third installment. The first Babysitter film was released on Netflix in 2017, and received positive reviews with a 71% score on Rotten Tomatoes. The film provided a refreshingly campy take on the horror-comedy genre, which allowed McG to follow up his film with a sequel in 2020.
