Chongdol Dew Sukulworapat and Noppharat Ramwong’s “Love Stuck” riffs on a time-loop romance. It tries to amp up charm, innocence, and relatability while invoking sci-fi elements. The mix of science fiction and romance doesn’t yield great results. It’s an inchoate balance that is not as arresting and playful as it should be. There’s no sparkle, just a routine, repetitive, and colorless string of loop-like incidents that promises inventiveness but delivers little. It’s too unsatisfying and the thinly stretched narrative keeps going in circles. This doesn’t work despite it being the undergirding conceit.
A story like this demands surprise and innovation, formally weaving it within the intricacies of recurring narrative elements and tricks. The film rests on romance as crafting a tender, strong, and binding way out of the destabilizing mess of the time loop. It becomes a soothing, grounding presence amidst the suffocating tension of the situation.

Kathryn Newton received the flak from fans last year for her role in the disappointing Ant-Man 3. But fans may have been a little too harsh on her after she just proved how much of a sweetheart she really is. After a photo of her with a fan was posted on social media, fans are now praising her for how she handled the fan’s request.

Camila Mendes delivers a great performance in Upgraded, elevating the material. Upgraded is a cozy comfort watch for fans of traditional romantic comedies, with a strong supporting cast. While it hints at socially relevant topics, it never delivers on them, and the film can feel derivative at times and doesn't follow through on its potential.
Upgraded, not to be confused with Leigh Whannel's 2018 R-rated action movie Upgrade, is the latest entry from Prime Video as their major Valentine's Day weekend tie-in. Starting in 2021 with the release of The Map of Tiny Perfect Things, the streamer has released yearly romance movies as a viewing option for couples over the romantic holiday that in the past likely would have been mid-budget theatrical releases. These have yielded mixed results, from 2022's delightfully funny I Want You Back to the well-intentioned but tonally confused Somebody I Used to Know in 2023. Upgraded feels like...

15 years ago Diablo Cody and Karyn Kusama joined forced to deliver "Jennifer's Body," a genuine cult classic that went from mismarketed box office failure maligned by critics who didn't understand its brilliance, to the reclaimed favorite that became one of the selling points in the marketing for "Lisa Frankenstein." Cody returns to the teen horror comedy space alongside Zelda Williams (in her feature directorial debut) with a zany, heartfelt, and unapologetically odd story about a particularly peculiar high school outcast named Lisa (Kathryn Newton) who goes on a murderous adventure with the reanimated corpse of a young man — whose grave she hangs out at — in search of new limbs, a sense of autonomy, and maybe even love.
Set against the backdrop of the candy-coated neon bubblegum of the 1980s, "Lisa Frankenstein" makes no qualms about being for weirdos, and by weirdos. It's the resulting lovechild of a raucous orgy between "Edward Scissorhands,...

Kathryn Newton Talks ‘Lisa Frankenstein,’ Young Avengers, ‘Big Little Lies 3’ and ‘Freaky Death Day’
Kathryn Newton’s feature film career continues to bear fruit.
Just five years ago, she was a series regular on two hit television series, HBO’s Big Little Lies and Netflix’s The Society, but when the pandemic played a role in the un-renewal of the latter, Newton wasted no time amassing an impressive slate of films. First up was Christopher Landon’s well-received slasher comedy, Freaky, that made three times its $6 million production budget during the height of the pandemic. She then followed that up with Ian Samuels’ hidden time-loop gem, The Map of Tiny Perfect Things, on Amazon Prime Video. In between these two films, she also received a career-altering offer to join the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Ant-Man’s daughter, Cassie Lang, beginning with Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania (2023) and potentially a Young Avengers movie at some point.

A young and innocent love that sparks from being in a time loop together — a love story that faces different hurdles than most. A 2021 romantic-time loop film called The Map of Tiny Perfect Things explores just that. Two young adults, Mark (Kyle Allen) and Margaret (Kathryn Newton), are the only ones who realize they are stuck in a time loop, and they decide to take advantage of it.
While the movie isn't the first about people stuck in a time loop, and it won't be the last, it is one that stood out to audiences because it's based on a short story. It resonated with viewers and critics so much that it was nominated for a Critics' Choice Award.
If you are confused about the ending of The Map of Tiny Perfect Things, here is everything you need to know.

Kenneth Branagh looks all set to continue his love affair with the world of Agatha Christie this year, with the pending release of A Haunting in Venice, Branagh's third adaptation of Christie's Hercule Poirot detective novels. Christie's most famous crime-solving creation has been played on TV and in film by a host of world-famous actors over the years, including stars of House Hugh Laurie, Alfred Molina, and Albert Finney, who was nominated for an Academy Award for his performance in the 1974 version of Murder on the Orient Express.
However, the most successful portrayal was that of David Suchet, who first took on the role for the British TV channel ITV in 1989 and proved so successful with audiences that he went on to play the part for the next quarter-century, retiring only in 2013 after filming 13 series and 70 episodes based on Christie's works, alongside such luminaries of stage and screen as two-time...

"I've been trying to get out more, and put myself out more." This short film premiered years ago but it's just now showing up online and it's worth a watch - it's just under 15 minutes. Some really impressive puppet work for the main character. Myrna the Monster is written and directed by Ian Samuels, who went on to make the feature films The Map of Tiny Perfect Things (which I really enjoyed) for Amazon, and Sierra Burgess Is a Loser for Netflix. Myrna first premiered at the 2015 Sundance Film Festival and it also played at the SXSW, Dallas, Nashville, and Montclair Film Festivals. A heart-broken alien dreamer from the moon named Myrna transitions into adult life in Los Angeles like any other 20-something. It's actually a touching little story about loneliness and connection. With the voice of Kathleen Hanna and Victor Yerrid as the puppeteer for Myrna, and animation by Ethan Clarke.

Numerous fascinating concepts can be found in sci-fi and fantasy, and one of the most interesting ones that occasionally gets used is the time loop (temporal loop). Movies that fall under this category normally feature characters being forced to relive the same day or experience again due to circumstances beyond their control. As such, they frantically try their best to get out of it.

Before her most recent role as Cassandra Lang in Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, Kathryn Newton has had a long career starring in both lead and supporting roles in film and television. With small roles in the Three Billboards Outside Ebbing Missouri, Lady Bird, and Big Little Lies, and lead roles in films like Detective Pikachu and The Map of Tiny Perfect Things. But her most impressive performance was her short-lived role as Allie Pressman in The Society, a Netflix original series that was canceled after its first season as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Kathryn Newton is having the opposite of a quarter-life crisis. Even though she’ll be boarding a red-eye to Toronto instead of blowing out candles, Newton feels very lucky to combine these personal and professional achievements. “If I’m promoting a movie or on a movie on my birthday,...

Nobody is having a better week than Paul Rudd, but Kathryn Newton’s past week comes a close second.

In a rather fitting fashion, the Groundhog Day formula has been used time and time and time again, particularly in modern rom-coms. Whether it's the Happy Death Day movies, Palm Springs, The Map of Tiny Perfect Things, or About Time, this time-honored tradition (as it were) has proven successful more often than not of late — though Hollywood has the benefit of simply trying it again, even (or especially) if it doesn't work out. Thus, it's once again time to return to the genre with Peacock's Meet Cute, a time-traveling sci-fi rom-com that allows Kaley Cuoco to perfect her meet-cute with Pete Davidson until she gets it right ... or, perhaps, perfectly wrong. And, as the trailer reveals, there's a reason why Hollywood producers love to try out this familiar format again and again and again.

The live-action feature film adaptation of “Masters of the Universe” has finally anointed its He-Man: rising actor Kyle Allen.
Producer Mattel Studios and Netflix announced that the “West Side Story” actor will take up the sword and skimpy costume of the ’80s icon in a film to be directed and co-written by The Nee Brothers (of the upcoming Sandra Bullock film “The Lost City” and “Band of Robbers”).
In “Masters of the Universe,” Allen will play an orphan named Adam who discovers he is a prince destined to be the savior of a faraway land. He must quickly learn of his power and the importance of saving his true home from an evil force. Previously at Sony Pictures, the project was officially announced by Netflix after months of further development. Sony will retain release rights to the project in China, insiders familiar with the deal said.

“Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist” only won a handful of awards over the course of its two-season run on NBC, but it may be adding a few more trophies to the mantle with its new TV movie. “Zoey’s Extraordinary Christmas,” which was released by The Roku Channel on Dec. 1, is nominated at the Critics Choice Awards for Best TV Movie, where it has emerged as an odds-on favorite to win.
“Zoey’s Extraordinary Christmas” picks up where the Season 2 finale left off while also functioning as a joyful Christmas special unto itself. The film centers on Zoey (Jane Levy) as she must face the first holiday season without her father, Mitch (Peter Gallagher), and sets out to recapture the magic of Christmas past as a tribute to him. At the same time, Max (Skylar Astin) is learning what it means to have the same musical powers as Zoey, as teased in the final minutes of the finale.

The 2022 Critics Choice Awards nominations for TV were announced on December 6 with HBO’s family drama “Succession” earning eight nominations. Next in line with five bids apiece were HBO’s limited series “Mare of Easttown” and Paramount +’s drama series “Evil.” The critics’ group also created a brand new category this year, Best Foreign Language Series, no doubt in response to the behemoth that is Netflix’s “Squid Game” — the Korean drama contends there and in two other categories. See the complete list of Critics Choice TV nominations below.

The fantasy trope of Time Loops is all the rage again. Obviously, we all know Groundhog Day, which did it perfectly. Last year brought Palm Springs, which also did it terrifically well. Just a few weeks ago, The Map of Tiny Perfect Things also found a way to make the premise charming. Now, we have Boss Level, which decides to go in a whole other direction. Instead of being a comedy or a romantic comedy, it goes as far away from rom-com as possible. Instead, we have a violent action film, with admittedly comedic undertones. The result is something that stands out, that’s for sure. The movie is a mix of action and science fiction, with a little comedy thrown in for good measure. As we learn early on, former Special Forces agent Roy Pulver (Frank Grillo) is trapped in a time loop that will constantly repeat the day of his murder.

Frank Grillo lives the same day again and again and again in a video game-adjacent thriller that struggles to distinguish itself
As repetitive as the time loop movie might have been in the last 12 months (just like the 12 months before and the 12 months before that etc), it’s not been quite as omnipresent, or as tiresome, as the running joke that we’re all essentially stuck in one of our own thanks to the restricted routine that’s been forced on us all. But even a year ago, Boss Level, Joe Carnahan’s action movie spin on the Groundhog Day formula, would have smelled a little musty, and not just because it was developed back in 2012 and filmed back in 2018, left on a shelf ever since.

If you've watched The Map of Tiny Perfect Things, a movie that came to Amazon Prime on Feb. 12, you've seen the (wildly attractive) actor Kyle Allen, who plays Mark. If he looked familiar to you, you might have recognized him from the Apocalypse season of American Horror Story - no spoilers - or The Path on Hulu. In addition to being an actor, Kyle is a trained ballerina (yup!) and acrobat (double-yup!) with an impressive resume. If you'd like to see more of what he can do - including his dancing skills - you have to check out the upcoming production of West Side Story. What would you do if your forever was a single day? In most films about time-loops, we watch characters struggle to escape repetition and eventually find a hole in the plot allowing them to slip back into their regular lives. In “The Map of Tiny Perfect Things,” directed by Ian Samuels, this idea pivots by changing the motivations of the two teens stuck in the loop.

With the Super Bowl behind us and the Oscars looming (and a pandemic-dampened Valentine’s Day as a marketing peg), American distributors are releasing their most robust slate of new releases in months this weekend.
Awards contenders “Judas and the Black Messiah” (about the FBI-sanctioned murder of Fred Hampton) and “Land” (starring and directed by Robin Wright) arrive in theaters, hot off their premieres at this year’s virtual Sundance Film Festival. Also on the awards-worthy indie front, A24 releases last year’s Sundance winner “Minari” on demand. Steven Yuen stars in this immigrant story with universal appeal. And if theaters are open (and safe) near you, consider catching Michelle Pfeiffer in the wickedly funny “French Exit.”
Targeting teens with Valentine’s offerings, Amazon delivers the “Groundhog Day”-esque romance “The Map of Tiny Perfect Things” to Prime subscribers, while Netflix completes its “To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before” trilogy with “Always and Forever.

Another year, another “Groundhog Day” rip-off. Nearly three decades after Bill Murray got stuck in a time loop until he became a better man, the concept has spawned so many iterations that it basically exists as its own genre, mixed and mashed with other tropes to reanimate a familiar routine. Often, the deja vu of watching these movies mimics the predicaments of their characters, even when they’re halfway decent. The latest to take the rom-com approach, “The Map of Tiny Perfect Things,” offers an agreeable kind of breezy, soul-searching variation, but can’t break free of the overwhelming meta impression that we’ve seen this all before.
The movie plays like a hybrid of several recent variations: Like 2017’s drama “Before I Fall,” it’s a slick YA adaptation (sci-fi writer Lev Grossman wrote the screenplay off his short), it has some tonal similarities to the horror-comedy “Happy Death Day,...

The final installment in Netflix’s hit To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before trilogy is an improvement over the second, but still lacks the sizzle of 2018’s original
To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before, an unfailingly sweet update on a John Hughes movie about a Korean-American high school girl whose old love letters are accidentally delivered, was arguably the most successful of Netflix’s 2018 romcom revival. The film launched homegrown stars in Lana Condor and Noah Centineo, whose irresistible chemistry made it a beguiling streamer’s loop; it’s one of the few films I rewatched immediately, then rewatched again, then popped in and out of my favorite scenes for weeks.

Kristen Wiig and Annie Mumolo reteam for a likable but throwaway comedy about two best friends going on vacation
The staggering success of 2011’s Bridesmaids – almost $300m globally, two Oscar nominations, a belated industry realisation that uh yeah women can do mass market comedies too – had an unlikely effect on its breakout star, and co-writer, Kristen Wiig. While Saturday Night Live viewers already cherished her as the show’s hit-after-hit Mvp, global audiences were now too let in on the joke and most of us waited impatiently to see what she would do next, perhaps expecting more of the same. But unlike the more obvious scene-stealer of the film, Melissa McCarthy, Wiig chose not to pursue a career headlining studio comedies, sticking mostly to the outskirts, choosing Sundance over Hollywood (she repeatedly turned down the offer to do a Bridesmaids sequel). It’s hard to find a new spin on a story that’s been told before. This week, The Map of Tiny Perfect Things seeks to traffic in material that we saw done to classic effect in Groundhog Day, not to mention brilliantly spun last year in Palm Springs. This movie could have easily been derivative and a total misfire. Luckily, the flick sidesteps nearly all of the pitfalls, finding a way to make this premise still feel unique. It may not reinvent the wheel, but if you’re looking for a solid new film to check out, this is one not to sleep on. The film is a romantic drama, with a fantasy/science fiction element thrown in for good measure. Early on, we meet teenager Mark (Kyle Allen), who is living the same day over and over again. Having mastered the day while in this endless time loop,...

Before we’re even out of the opening credits of “The Map of Tiny Perfect Things,” director Ian Samuels and screenwriter Lev Grossman waste no time clueing us into its premise revolving around a time loop that will teach its teen protagonists to accept life’s little gifts and major detours. This John Green-lite fantasy for the young-adult crowd holds many sequences that sparkle and shine, but a few that stumble and sag as well.
