Don’t let anybody tell you differently: the fall festival announcements aren’t even close to being over. Look no further than the second part of today’s morning double whammy, as the Toronto International Film Festival has just announced its sprawling Centrepiece program, just one hour after the New York Film Festival released its own Main Slate. On its own, this lineup would be juicy enough. Paired with NYFF? Well, there goes our morning.

TIFF’s internationally-focused section has always been a feast for fans of global cinema, and this year’s lineup is no exception. A team up between The Office stars and Green Day was not on my 2025 Bingo card, but I'm intrigued. The punk rock band known for hits like “Basket Case,” “American Idiot,” and “Good Riddance (Time of Your Life),” are working with two alums of NBC's most popular comedy show on an unexpected new movie. While the film has been described as a comedy, it is not related to the recently released and poorly received Australian version of the long-running show about printer and paper sales. A comedy movie involving Green Day is on its way. On Monday, Variety revealed that Live Nation Productions is producing a film titled New Years Rev, backed by and involving the rock band.

The film project written and directed by Lee Kirk will be a coming-of-age movie, which follows three friends in a band as they travel to Los Angeles thinking they’ll open for Green Day at a New Year’s Eve concert.

The Rev-8 has been a transformational addition to Starfield but one creative player managed to fly the vehicle even higher with a fantastic mod. Gone are the days of mindless trudging around planets in the hope of coming across something interesting as Starfield players can now simply climb into the driver's seat of a speedy buggy. “Monster” Season 3 has added Laurie Metcalf, Tom Hollander, and Olivia Williams to its cast, Variety has learned exclusively.

The trio join previously announced cast member Charlie Hunnam, who will star as Ed Gein in the next season of the Netflix anthology series. According to sources, Metcalf will play Gein’s mother, Augusta, while Hollander will play Alfred Hitchcock and Williams will play Alma Reville, Hitchcock’s wife.

Given that Gein served as one of the inspirations for Norman Bates and Hitchcock’s film “Psycho,” it would appear Season 3 of the hit Netflix anthology will delve into how Gein’s crimes influenced the film and the novel upon which the film was based.

Gein became infamous in the 1950s when authorities discovered that he not only had killed multiple people, but had dug up graves from a cemetery near his home and fashioned all manner of household items and clothing from human remains.

A year after Starfield's original launch, Bethesda Game Studios is gearing up for the game's first major expansion, Shattered Space on September 30, 2024. The new Dlc will lean into a horror aesthetic as players venture to the previously unseen planet of Va'ruun'kai, home to the Great Serpent-worshipping House Va'ruun after some experiments have left it in a state of disarray.

While this expansion was announced prior to Starfield's initial launch and was used as an incentive to buy the Digital Deluxe or Constellation Editions of the game, Bethesda has spent the year in between adding different features to the game. These include more tools for the ship builder that offer players a way to customize the interiors of their crafts to make it feel more like a mobile home for their characters, and the new Rev-8 land vehicle, adding some much-needed quicker traversal to the game.

USA Network has ordered a fourth season of its thriller limited drama series The Sinner, with Bill Pullman set to reprise his role as Detective Harry Ambrose. Additionally, the network has picked up two new unscripted series, Instant Family (working title), starring Nicole Walters and Josh Walters, and The Rev (working title), headlined by Pastor Richard Hartley. Both are in the unscripted family sitcom genre, which the network has been focusing on following the success of Chrisley Knows Best.

The renewal and new series pickups are part of the current programming shift at USA away from ongoing scripted series toward more live and unscripted programming, along with “eventized” scripted projects, largely limited/anthology series.

This is a programming strategy that has been gaining momentum among basic cable networks as it is becoming increasingly challenging for premium scripted series to be sustained by the linear ad-supported cable business model.

Producer Hannah Pescod and actor-writer Tom Hollander have reteamed to launch UK-based indie Bandstand Productions with the aim of building a boutique slate of drama projects. The duo previously collaborated on BBC Two comedy Rev, which Hollander co-created and starred in. Pescod produced the first two seasons before becoming executive producer on Season 3. The series won the Best Sitcom BAFTA in 2011.

Former Shine Group CEO Alex Mahon will be non-executive chair of Bandstand which has also set an exclusive first-look deal with All3Media International.

The Bandstand slate will include original ideas from writers with whom Pescod and Hollander have pre-existing relationships, and the duo will also seek out new talent while creating projects themselves and eyeing adaptations of classic and contemporary novels. The intent is for Hollander to feature on screen in some of the projects.
