Looking for great rom-com movies? Here’s the streamer that should be first on your list
Image
From ‘Say Anything’ to ‘Palm Springs,’ Hulu nail every era of the rom-com.

Rom-coms are my favorite genre because when they really work, they deliver one of the best story experiences. Put simply, they both make me laugh and move me emotionally. Now, I’m not talking about the made-for-tv kind with generic meet-cutes and soft lighting, but the real deal: big-screen, laugh-out-loud, emotionally layered stories that actually stick with you.

So I started digging across the streamers, looking for the good ones. And while it’s obviously subjective, the best collection I found was on Hulu. Not the most rom-coms, but the right ones for me — a killer mix of 2000s nostalgia, indie hits, and buzzy modern entries that all hit that sweet spot. Here’s why Hulu is the best streamer for rom-com lovers who want quality, not quantity.

Everything you need to know about the best streamer for rom-com movies.

The years since have seen her star in everything from Spike Lee's He Got Gameto Ben Stiller's Zoolander and its sequel, as well as David Harbour's Hellboy reboot.

Her most notable project to date, however, remains that of the Resident Evil movie franchise, an adaptation of Capcom's survival horror video game series of the same name. March 6 Will Be a Fantastic Day for Anne Hathaway Fans
Image
Miramax Films’ musical fantasy comedy Ella Enchanted will officially be heading to a brand-new streaming home soon. The 2004 movie was led by Academy Award-winner Anne Hathaway in one of her earliest movie roles, following the success of 2001’s The Princess Diaries.

Beginning on March 6, Ella Enchanted will be available for streaming on Prime Video. In the film, Hathaway portrayed the titular role of Ella, a young woman whose fairy godmother granted her the magical gift of obedience. This ability requires her to immediately obey any command she has been given. However, as she grows up, this so-called gift proves to be more of a curse than a blessing, since it gives anyone the power to take advantage of her. During its theatrical run, it received negative reviews from critics and fans of the novel, with a Tomatometer rating of 51% on Rotten Tomatoes. This was due to its lack of faithfulness from the original source material.

Image
Zach Galifianakis, Isla Fisher, Gal Gadot, Jon Hamm, and fan favorite Patton Oswalt along with director Greg Mottola (Superbad), couldn't save their 2016 action comedy, Keeping Up With the Joneses. The film should have been a solid comedy hit, but instead tanked at the box office and was savaged by critics and audiences alike. However it has found new life on streaming, and sits at number four on Max's Top 10.

Keeping Up With the Joneses had the star power and director to get audiences excited about the film. Galifianakis was riding high with the Hangover trilogy, as Hamm earned major praise and awards as Don Draper on Mad Men (which ended the year before). Meanwhile, Gadot had been cast as Wonder Woman and appeared in Fast & Furious 6. Fisher appeared in hits like Wedding Crashers and Confessions of a Shopaholic.

Isla Fisher Probably Shouldn’t Have Taken Her Parents to Watch Sacha Baron Cohen Shoot One of the Most Disturbing Scenes of His Career
Image
Hollywood actress Isla Fisher is no stranger to comedy. She has been a part of a number of memorable films in the genre including Wedding Crashers, Confessions of a Shopaholic, and Hot Rod. You would think Fisher would have gotten used to the occasionally bizarre requirements of the genre and the lengths that actors will go to for a laugh.

But as it turns out, the actress was not prepared for one particular scene involving an elephant in the movie Isla Fisher made with her then-husband Sacha Baron Cohen, 2016’s The Brothers Grimsby. Cohen, of course, is known for pushing the boundaries of comedy like no other actor working today. Things got so intense that Fisher regretted bringing her parents on set to watch the scene being filmed.

Hello and welcome to the Scene 2 Seen Podcast. I am Valerie Complex, an associate editor and film writer at Deadline.

‘The Killer’ Ending Explained & Movie Summary: Does ‘The Killer’ Get His Revenge?
Image
David Fincher’s new film is definitely a sleek and captivating watch for those who are interested in the methodical and precise nature of all things Fincher. The subject matter isn’t something new, and the character study comes across like many films we’ve seen before, Drive or American Psycho being the first that comes to mind. The film is a stylized study of the days of a killer after something goes terribly wrong, leaving him to defend himself. Michael Fassbender stars in and as The Killer, and the Irish actor is a delight to watch. The film begins in Paris in the first chapter. The assassin awaits his target’s arrival and goes about his boring day as we hear his inner voice (in very Fincher style).

Amazon Prime Video New Releases: March 2022
Image
Look, not every month is gonna be full of bangers. Amazon Prime Video’s list of new releases for March 2022 is extremely light but still has a couple of good options for streaming obsessives.

The biggest title this month is undoubtedly The Boys Presents: Diabolical on March 4. This series presents eight different stories set in The Boys‘ universe, all offered up by different writers. Since each of the eight mini-episodes are animated, it’s probably fair to say this is The Boys‘ Animatrix. Call it the “Anivought”.

Also arriving on March 4 is season 2 of the high concept comedy Upload. Set in a digital afterlife, this series created by The Office‘s Greg Daniels asks some big questions about where technology is taking us.

Disney+ New Releases: September 2021
Paul Bettany, Elizabeth Olsen, Kat Dennings, Kathryn Hahn, Randall Park, and Teyonah Parris in WandaVision (2021)
Through much of 2021, streaming service Disney+ has been Marvel’s domain. That’ll happen when you premiere WandaVision, The Falcon and The Winter Soldier, Loki, and What If…? within eight months of one another. With the Disney+ list of new releases for September 2021, however, Disney’s other big franchise is striking back.

Star Wars: Visions is set to premiere all seven installments on Wednesday, September 22. This project is a collection of 7 animated short films all from renowned Japanese studios. As you can see by this first teaser, it could be rad. These seven shorts should also make the wait for The Mandalorian season 3 and The Book of Boba Fett even easier.

While Marvel’s What If…? continues on this month, the only other major Disney+ original to premiere in September is Doogie Kamealoha, M.D. As you might be able to guess from the name, this is a reboot of the sitcom Doogie Howser,...

Sigourney Weaver, Alan Rickman, and Tim Allen in Galaxy Quest (1999)
Hulu New Releases: July 2021
Sigourney Weaver, Alan Rickman, and Tim Allen in Galaxy Quest (1999)
It’s summer, everyone! And with its relatively sparse list of new releases for July 2021, Hulu seems to be subtlety imploring its subscribers to go outside.

Don’t get us wrong: Hulu’s library offerings get a big upgrade this month. July 1 sees the arrival of great films like Galaxy Quest, Fargo, and Caddyshack. Bill and Ted Face the Music premieres on July 2 and its followed by Barb and Star Go to Vista Del Mar on July 9. Not bad stuff! It’s just that, outside of the library titles, there isn’t much to go off of.

Hulu’s only major original release this month is the FX on Hulu production American Horror Stories on July 15. As its name implies, the show is a spinoff of American Horror Story and will feature self-contained horror episodes rather than a season-long arc. If you’ll allow this geriatric millennial to deploy one truly ancient meme: “Yo dawg,...

Don Bluth in Dragon's Lair 3D: Return to the Lair (2002)
Hear me out: why Titan Ae isn’t a bad movie
Don Bluth in Dragon's Lair 3D: Return to the Lair (2002)
Continuing our series of writers standing up for loathed films is a defense of an unusual, risk-taking animation from 2000

Earth explodes into smithereens within the first few minutes of Don Bluth and Gary Goldman’s animated sci-fi adventure Titan Ae. Erroneously targeted at young audiences, since it features the near annihilation of the human species as its inciting incident, as well as other mature elements, the film raised some eyebrows upon its release in 2000. The directors were making something distinct, a departure from the dominance of Disney fables during the 90s but right before other studios, such as Blue Sky and DreamWorks, found success with more satirical storytelling throughout the early noughties. Bluth’s career, in particular, had been unconventional and based on reinvention. With Titan, that artistic approach reached its riskiest, most pattern-defying form.

The Devil Wears Prada Or Confessions Of A Shopaholic: Which Movie Is Better?
Le diable s'habille en Prada (2006)

Both movies are based on books, with Shopaholic coming from Sophie Kinsella's work and The Devil Wears Prada coming from that of Lauren Weisberger.

Film Review: ‘Can You Keep A Secret?’
Director Elise Duran’s “Can You Keep A Secret?” makes it clear from the very first moments the animated opening credits play over the Go-Go’s “Our Lips Are Sealed” that it’s going to be a sweet, if not satisfactory time spent in the golden-hour glow of this romantic comedy’s world. Based on Sophie Kinsella’s book, her first standalone novel after the success of her “Confessions of a Shopaholic” series, . That said, it lacks a sense of uniqueness to set it apart from other female-centric book-to-screen adaptations.

Emma Corrigan (Alexandra Daddario) isn’t living her best life. Not only is she stuck in a dead-end job as a marketing manager at a financially flailing organic edibles company, she feels trapped in a lackluster romance with doting but dorky boyfriend Connor (David Ebert). She’s also suffering from a case of low self-esteem. She’s in desperate need of a literal life shake-up,...

‘Can You Keep A Secret?’ Trailer: Alexandra Daddario Drunkenly Tells All To An Attractive Stranger In A New Rom-Com
In an age where theaters are being dominated by superhero films and franchise sequels, reboots, and revivals, there just doesn’t seem to be a lot of room in Hollywood for your typical, run-of-the-mill, charming rom-com anymore. Well, that’s where films like “Can You Keep A Secret?” come in.

As seen in the first trailer for the film, “Can You Keep A Secret?” is based on the novel by “Confessions of a Shopaholic” author Sophie Kinsella and tells the story of a man and woman that have their “meet cute” on an airplane where the woman drunkenly spills her guts to the male stranger during a bit of turbulence.
