They’ve already made two blockbusters together but Timothée Chalamet is hoping that his big-screen collaborations with Denis Villeneuve continue for many years to come. And he’s not afraid of reminding the auteur of his intentions.
Chalamet joined Villeneuve’s Arrival star Amy Adams on the Palm Springs Convention Center stage on Friday night to present the filmmaker with a Visionary Award for his work on last year’s Dune: Part Two. In doing so, Chalamet called Villeneuve a “terrific director I was dying to work with to a father figure, to a mentor and a close friend, and someone I like to gently remind every couple of weeks, usually over text, that God forbid anything happen to Denis or myself, ‘Can you be the director I work with most in my career, and can I be the actor you worked with the most in [your] career?'”

Benito Mussolini, the founder of fascism, will be the subject of an eight-part series named “M. Son of the Century,” directed by the famous Joe Wright. The series, which stars Italian actor Luca Marinelli, aims to show how a political outsider became one of history’s most infamous rulers in new ways.
Based on Antonio Scurati’s best-selling “documentary novel,” the series follows Mussolini’s life from his time as a journalist to his rise to power as the leader of Italy’s fascist movement during a crucial decade. In this historical story, Wright, known for his work in period plays like “Atonement” and “The Darkest Hour,” does something different.
Wright considers how the British saw Mussolini and says, “Being British, Mussolini has always been this kind of strange, almost clown-like figure.” He sees this series as a chance to examine where fascism came from and how it relates to...

Director Joe Wright signals his intent early on in M. Son of the Century, his eight-part series on the rise of Italian dictator Benito Mussolini.
“Follow me,” Luca Marinelli, playing Mussolini, whispers conspiratorily to the audience early in the first episode. “Follow me, you’ll love me too. I’ll make you a fascist.”
Over the course of eight hours, the show traces a decade in Mussolini’s career, his transition from journalist and political outsider to the head of a populist movement and new political ideology —fascism— that would force itself into the mainstream and seize power. Adapted from the first volume of Antonio Scurati’s bestselling “documentary novel” of the same name, M. Son of the Century shows how Mussolini, a former editor of the Italian Socialist Party’s official newspaper, fell out with the left and used any means necessary, up to and including murder, to advance his political career.

Brian Cox recalls working with Steven Seagal on a 1996 action comedy with an 11% Rotten Tomatoes score. The Scottish actor is best known to modern audiences as Logan Roy from HBO's Succession, receiving three Emmy nominations for his portrayal of the aging and brash patriarch and media mogul. However, as a classically trained Shakespearean actor, Cox has also appeared in many movies from the 1980s to the 2010s as a character actor, including Manhunter, Braveheart, The Boxer, The Rookie, Troy, Adaptation, X2, and Churchill.
Over his career, Cox has been outspoken about his co-stars and fellow actors, famously and frequently voicing his disapproval of his co-star Jeremy Strong's method acting on the set of Succession. He also recently discussed his co-star Daniel Day-Lewis' method acting on the 1997 film The Boxer, calling his approach "a little off-putting." Brian Cox isn’t very interested in “Oscar season” these days. The acclaimed actor recently told The Hollywood Reporter that the annual awards show is “absolute nonsense” because the Academy only spotlights films that are released during awards season — or, as Cox explained, whatever is in theaters “between Thanksgiving and Christmas.”
“The Oscars are absolute nonsense because everything that’s judged in the Oscars, it’s not a year’s work. It’s just the work that comes out between Thanksgiving and Christmas,” the “Succession” icon said. “I think it makes those awards a fallacy quite honestly, because there’s a lot of other good work that goes on outside of what they call Oscar season.”

I usually love a slow burn, especially in a spy thriller series. However, The Agency, a new series developed by Showtime that will stream on Paramount+, is a drawn-out progression that gives new meaning to the meandering way incense burns. In other words, the show is all atmosphere, just for show, with very little substance.
The Agency suffers from a severe lack of motivation. The characters are poorly developed, and there is no payoff after the first episodes, where a pilot desperately needs to draw the viewer in with exciting plot developments. The lack of tension and intrigue makes the batch of episodes available to critics feel boring and stagnant.

Eddie Redmayne is no stranger to prosthetics but the variety of disguises he dons as a stone-cold assassin in “The Day of the Jackal” proved to be his most challenging physical transformation yet.
Episode 1 of the series, which landed in the U.K. on Sky on Nov. 7 and is set to hit Peacock in the U.S. on Nov. 14, opens with Redmayne infiltrating corporate headquarters disguised as an elderly German cleaner to take out a target.
For that one scene alone, the actor spent four hours in hair and make-up to age and change his face (a process overseen by make-up designer Melanie Lenihan and prosthetics designer Richard Martin) and donned a foam suit to bulk out his body. To top it off, the scene was shot during a blisteringly hot day in Hungary and there was no air-conditioning in the studio. “My overwhelming memory of those days was Richard...

Colman Domingo is in the Oscars 2025 Best Actor race, and he could accomplish something that hasn't been done since Denzel Washington did it seven years ago. While Denzel is firmly entrenched as a contender for the Best Supporting Actor Oscar in 2025 thanks to his Gladiator II performance, his absence from the lead category leaves room for other actors to shine. The predicted 2025 Oscars Best Actor nominations include past winners and nominees, and Colman Domingo counts among the latter group.
Domingo finds himself in the middle of awards season conversations thanks to his performance in Sing Sing. The prison drama from A24 and director Greg Kwedar is based on a true story, and sees the actor play John "Divine G" Whitfield. Critics have raved about Domingo's performance in Sing Sing, so much so that he is expected to be in the mix for a Best Actor Oscar nomination. It won't be...

The Dark Knight trilogy is considered one of the greatest trilogies of all cinematic history, thanks in large part to The Dark Knight. Christopher Nolan expertly created a Batman story that resonated with audiences.
As the titular character, Christian Bale leads the trilogy of films in unexpected ways. If audiences are looking for more Batman in their life, there are so many reasons to revisit the epic Dark Knight trilogy.
Batmans Origin Story Is Just as Epic as Audiences Hoped
Batman Begins took the character in directions fans had never considered, but would grow to love immensely. Bruce Wayne would see his crime-fighting career start by joining the League of Assassins, an army of the world's best ninja assassins led by the films villain, Ras al Ghul. It seems quick, but the origin story of Batman is crafted in such a brilliant and thoughtful way. Christopher Nolan ensures that the...

“The Brutalist” was one of the buzziest titles to come out of the Venice Film Festival, pushing filmmaker Brady Corbet immediately into many Oscar predictions lists for best director. Many might not be aware that, 20 years earlier, Corbet was the teenage lead star of the film “Thunderbirds.”
This cinematic fact was revealed on stage at the BFI London Film Festival in something of a rare public talk by the heads of Working Title, Tim Bevan and Eric Fellner.
Despite being arguably the U.K.’s best known and most successful production company — whose more than 150 films have landed more than 300 Oscars, BAFTAs and Golden Globes combined — the two were asked to discuss their failures and the lessons learned along the way.
“Thunderbirds” — based on the cult sci-fi TV series — was among the flops mentioned, making just $28 million from a budget of $57 million.

Daniel Day-Lewis recently announced he will be coming out of retirement to star in his son's directorial debut, Anemone. Day-Lewis hasn't starred in a feature film since Paul Thomas Anderson's Phantom Thread (2017) and officially announced his retirement from acting following the film's release. Although Day-Lewis was nominated for his leading role as Reynolds Woodcock, marking his sixth Best Actor nomination, he lost that particular Oscar to Gary Oldman, who won for portraying Winston Churchill in The Darkest Hour. Day-Lewis remains the only person ever to win the Academy Award for Best Actor three times, while nine other actors have won 2.

In recent years, Labor Day weekend’s reputation as a box office dead zone has been upended by strong showings from films like “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings” and “The Equalizer 3.” Unfortunately, for 2024, standard perception prevails with a predictably lackluster showing.
“Beetlejuice Beetlejuice” (Warner Bros.) opens next week to a projected $100 million+ debut, starting what looks like an improved rest of the year compared to the final four months in 2023. For now, it’s tread water time, with the late summer’s best doing best (and in some cases holding extremely well).
The weekend’s total of $86 million was down only $6 million from last year despite the boost from the Denzel Washington sequel ($35 million). Key was the sustained strength of previously top titles. Your browser does not support the video tag. World War II movies often take artistic liberties with historical events, but some films strive to maintain a high degree of accuracy. Films like Saving Private Ryan and Hacksaw Ridge offer gripping stories while accurately depicting the harrowing realities of war. Dunkirk and Tora! Tora! Tora! provide faithful portrayals of historical events from multiple perspectives, while Downfall delves into the complexities of Adolf Hitler's final days.
Plenty of World War II movies take artistic liberties when recounting their true stories, either to enhance drama or because they are only interested in using historical events as a backdrop for their fictional narratives, but some are historically accurate. There is no shortage of World War II movies with glaring historical inaccuracies, ranging from the reimagined events in Pearl Harbor to the intentionally reconfigured history in Inglourious Basterds that adds comedic action. With 2023’s compelling Jake Gyllenhaal vehicle The Covenant, Guy Ritchie took a more serious dramatic turn, away from the flashy action, glib humor and mashup of period settings with contemporary attitude that had characterized many of his biggest commercial successes. With its typically Ritchie-esque ensemble of quippy rascals, The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare sees the director back on more customary territory. Sort of. Chronicling a covert World War II mission manned by a band of renegades, the movie is diverting but remains awkwardly stuck between a larkish caper and a more gripping combat action thriller.
Scripted by Paul Tamasy, Eric Johnson, Arash Amel and Ritchie, based on the nonfiction book by war specialist Damien Lewis, the remarkable story comes from British War Department documents dating back to Winston Churchill’s first term in office, which were declassified in 2016.

Bradley Cooper had a problem. The Oscar-nominated actor was gearing up to play Leonard Bernstein, the musical genius behind “West Side Story” and “Candide” and one of the driving cultural forces of the 20th century. Except, Cooper looked nothing like the distinctive composer and conductor.
Enter Guillermo del Toro. The two men discussed Cooper’s predicament on the set of del Toro’s “Nightmare Alley,” which the actor starred in while working to get “Maestro,” his look at the private life of Bernstein, off the ground. Cooper confessed that he needed to be transformed, and according to del Toro, only one person was right for the job: Kazu Hiro. The Oscar-winning makeup artist had used his gift for prosthetics to transform Gary Oldman into Winston Churchill in “The Darkest Hour.” When Cooper sent Hiro a text asking if he was interested, he jumped at the chance.

Working on Bradley Cooper’s “Maestro” meant incredibly long hours for prosthetics master Kazu Hiro and his makeup team. Hiro, an Oscar winner for transforming Gary Oldman into Winston Churchill for “The Darkest Hour,” revealed at the New York Film Festival (via Entertainment Weekly) that he needed to be on set at 1 a.m. during parts of the film where Bradley Cooper appears as Leonard Bernstein in his 70s.
“The last stage, he had covered pretty much everywhere, the bodysuit and arms. That took over five hours,” Hiro revealed. “The last stage, the whole time, our call time was one in the morning. The other thing was he wanted makeup to be finished before the crew call, so he would appear as Lenny to set up the shoot and everything. That also kind of made our call time two hours earlier than normal, so that was quite tough.”

Gary Oldman, Alan Rickman, and Idris Elba are exceptional actors who have proven their mastery in playing both heroes and villains. Rachel McAdams, Lena Headey, and Helena Bonham Carter possess the ability to seamlessly transition between lovable good guys and contemptible villains. Denzel Washington, Meryl Streep, Heath Ledger, and Samuel L. Jackson are actors who excel in portraying both convincing villains and brave heroes, showcasing their range and versatility.
Not every actor is capable of convincingly playing both heroes and villains, but there are plenty who have proven their mastery of such duality. It's common for actors to become linked to a certain type of role because after they have successfully acted in one, casting directors are more likely to consider them for similar parts. This is often a sign of a good actor because it means they were convincing enough that it's difficult to imagine them playing a different type of character.

You won’t want to miss Helen Mirren’s transformation into Israeli Prime Minister Golda Meir in the new trailer for “Golda.”
Directed by Guy Nattiv and written by Nicholas Martin, “Golda” concerns the 19-day Yom Kippur War waged over territory that Israel had previously annexed and how the conflict became a proxy war between the United States and the Soviet Union.
The Yom Kippur War saw Israelis recognizing that there was little guarantee that they could dominate the Arab states militarily, as they had done in previous Arab–Israeli Wars. The conflict slowly paved the way for the Israeli–Palestinian peace process. The 1978 Camp David Accords saw Israel return the entire Sinai Peninsula to Egypt. The subsequent 1979 Egyptian–Israeli peace treaty marked the first instance of an Arab country recognizing Israel as a legitimate state.

Netflix’s live-action adaptation of the popular video game “Gears of War” moves one step closer as Academy Award-nominated screenwriter Jon Spaihts has boarded the project.
Best known for co-writing “Dune,” “Dune: Part Two” and “Doctor Strange,” Spaihts will now take on the challenge of adapting “Gears of War,” one of gaming’s richest and most acclaimed video game sagas, with over 40 million copies sold.
“’Gears of War’ is one of the all-time great action games, with vivid characters, a beautifully designed world, and a combat system that drives home the lethality of war and the importance of standing by your squadmates,” Spaihts said in a statement to Variety. “It wants to be cinema, and I’m thrilled to have the chance to help that happen.”

Ever since Baz Luhrmann’s “Elvis” premiered at the Cannes Film Festival back in May of 2022, the movie has been gaining momentum. The film’s shining star, Austin Butler, has been showered with recognition reaping a whopping 27 nominations in the Best Actor category, including BAFTA where he won. He has also taken home a slew of breakthrough performer trophies. Here are five reasons why he could win the Oscar.
He’s embodying an icon
Of the top 10 contenders in our Best Actor odds, Butler is the only one who portrays a real-life fellow. And this isn’t just any regular Joe, it’s Elvis Presley… the highest selling solo recording artist of all time. Even if academy voters don’t recognise Butler from his previous body of work, his association with such an icon will make it easy for them to remember and recognise him.

Brendan Fraser is Gold Derby’s odds-on favorite to win the Best Actor Oscar this year for his acclaimed performance as Charlie in A24’s “The Whale,” directed by Darren Aronofsky. The award-winning drama, which tells of a reclusive, obese English teacher trying to reconnect with his teenage daughter (Sadie Sink), allows Fraser to shine in a complex, emotionally demanding role. The film earned Fraser nominations at the Golden Globes, SAG Awards, BAFTAs and Oscars, and last month he won the Critics Choice Award for Best Actor. His performance has been celebrated by many critics, including Eric Eisenberg, who says in CinemaBlend, “[Brendan Fraser is] an enchanting performer […] the actor serves as a powerful, bright light in a dark pool of despair.” Fraser does have significant competition at the Oscars, with Austin Butler in “Elvis” and Colin Farrell in “The Banshees of Inisherin” both having won Best Actor trophies at the Golden Globes.
