It’s more than a little odd when a director’s follow-up film to an Oscar-nominated hit is being offloaded onto theaters in the frozen tundra that is “dumpuary.” It’s weirder, still, when press materials make an effort to essentially erase the filmmaker’s name from the work entirely. It also isn’t every day that said filmmaker is Mel Gibson, a figure for which the word “controversial” does little to encapsulate his wild career and personal life.

So even if Lionsgate is coyly selling Flight Risk as “from the award-winning director of Braveheart, Apocalypto, and Hacksaw Ridge” without telling you who that award-winning director is, it doesn’t really matter. In fact, this anonymizing might turn out to be a good thing for Gibson. Almost thirty years on, the film’s arrival on Tubi has underscored the constant demand for action movies, both old and new, on streaming platforms, and how very few pass by without a stop on a Top 10 chart somewhere.

Lethal Weapon and Mad Max star Mel Gibson returned to the action movie genre this year with Boneyard...and its available to stream for free later this month. The movie, which finds Gibson on the hunt for a serial killer known as The Bone Collector, was panned by critics upon release earlier this year, but no doubt fans of the actor will be eager to see the Blood Father star take the lead in this B-movie thriller.

Boneyard currently stands at 44% on Rotten Tomatoes (alongside a Popcornmeter rating of 35%) and stars Curtis 50 Cent Jackson, Brian Van Holt, Nora Zehetner, Gabrielle Haugh, and Weston Cage, the son of Nicolas Cage, alongside Gibson. Boneyard is available to stream for free on Tubi from November 11, and you can check out the official synopsis below.

Exclusive: The West Mesa Murders, the shocking killings of 11 women whose remains were found buried in 2009 in the New Mexico desert, is to be the subject of a true crime docuseries.

The unsolved murder case was the inspiration for Lionsgate’s recent acquisition Boneyard, starring Mel Gibson and 50 Cent. That film’s director Asif Akbar is back aboard to helm the crime series, teaming up with New Mexico producer Vincent E. McDaniel and L.A.-based producer Brian A. Metcalf.

The plan is for the series to include interviews with the victims’ families, witnesses and law enforcement, as well as archival footage, clips from the Boneyard film and interviews with individuals closely involved in the investigations.

Picking up theatrical franchises isn’t unprecedented for the streamer. Netflix produced the second “Knives Out” film and is currently in production on the third. Boneyard explores the West Mesa murders, a grim real-life serial killer case still under investigation. The cast is divided between the out-of-place 50 Cent and Brian Van Holt, and wonderful but small performances from Nora Zehetner and Mel Gibson. Despite its chilling premise, Boneyard suffers from a flat tone with no atmosphere or suspense and a formulaic script with bad dialogue.

The creepiest part of Boneyard, besides its title, is the fact that the villain at hand may still be walking God's green Earth at this very moment. The brilliant Nora Zehetner stars in two very different 2024 films, Boneyard and Monster Summer, both with Mel Gibson. In Boneyard, Zehetner plays a female detective in a hyper-masculine world, drawing on real-life experiences for authenticity. The fantasy drama Monster Summer, set for release in October, features Zehetner as a bed-and-breakfast owner and Mason Thames' mother in a coming-of-age tale.

Nora Zehetner could be the best actor whose name you don't recognize. Hopefully you do, though. Long before Star Wars, Rian Johnson directed her in the 2006 indie classic, Brick. She was a burning bright spot in The Brothers Bloom, and had an incredible arc in Marc Maron's underrated series, Maron. She recently starred opposite Scoot McNairy and Kit Harington in the excellent Blood for Dust, and is now in two back-to-back Mel Gibson movies Boneyard and Monster Summer (formerly known as Boys of Summer). The best thing is, she plays completely different roles.

Obviously, the makers have taken some creative liberties and added certain fictionalized plot points to make the conflicts more intriguing, but still, a chunk of what is shown actually happened in real life. So let’s take a glance at the entire case, what the Albuquerque police department found in real life, and if they were ever able to catch the perpetrator.

Boneyard is your average B-grade mystery thriller, with Mel Gibson playing the lead. The incoherent narrative, hurried and weak backstory, and lack of character to root for make Boneyard a forgettable watch. Based on the West Mesa murders, an unsolved serial killing case that took Albuquerque by storm in 2009, a woman walking her dog discovered skeletal remains in the desert. Most of the victims identified were sex workers, and it was assumed that a serial killer was on the loose. In Boneyard, agent Petrovick, a specialist in serial killing, was invited to study the case and work with the local police. Detective Ortega was particularly irritated by Agent Petrovick’s intervention; he believed he was more than capable of solving the case on his own. While Agent Petrovick created a profile to track down the serial killer, Detective Ortega was convinced that the killer was an undercover cop.

The 2024 film Boneyard drew inspiration from a haunting true crime case in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Between 2001 and 2005, eleven women and girls went missing in the area. Tragically, their remains were discovered four to eight years later, in 2009, buried in an arid stretch of desert known as the West Mesa. The victims, aged 15 to 32, had been sexually assaulted and brutally murdered. Though police questioned persons of interest, this heinous serial killer remained at large.

Directed by Asif Akbar, Boneyard tells a fictionalized story based on these unsolved West Mesa murders. It brought together anecdotally a cast led by Mel Gibson as an experienced FBI profiler named Pete and Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson as the local police chief. Gibson delivered a seasoned, gritty performance, but Jackson struggled more in his substantial role.

The movie followed police detectives and federal agents racing to identify the perpetrator before any other lives could be lost. Yet...

You might expect a film that begins with Mel Gibson announcing, “The Bible says we should rejoice in our suffering,” to be a little more high-minded than “Boneyard.” But this trashy trawl through a fictionalized version of the “West Mesa Murders” — a still-unsolved southwestern crime spree in our century’s early years — is the kind of dubiously moralizing exploitation exercise that makes “Sound of Freedom” look like a noble class act by comparison.

Likewise “inspired by true events,” Asif Akbar’s movie alternates between lurid serial-killer suspense not far removed from the retro grindhouse ogling of concurrent “MaXXXine” and a convoluted procedural involving variably corrupt, conflicting investigators. Four screenwriters are credited, to results that feel very much like four screenplays shuffled to comprise one awkward narrative deck of cards — from which marquee name Gibson has been largely dealt out. Brian A. Metcalf (Underdeveloped) is behind the show about a group of outcasts working at a seedy motel who find themselves in danger when they accidentally uncover a drug smuggling plot for the mafia. Additional casting is being finalised.

The series is written and executive-produced by Metcalf, who will serve as showrunner, director and actor. Asif Akbar and Kelly Arjen will also executive-produce with Akbar directing some of the episodes. Pellegrino will serve as co-executive producer.

Filming begins next month in Las Vegas on the six-episode project, which doesn’t currently have a network aboard and is being independently financed by the producers. The plan is to sell it after production.

In what promises to be a gripping cinematic experience, the trailer for Boneyard, set for a 2024 release, has just been launched, stirring anticipation amongst thriller and action aficionados worldwide. Directed by Asif Akbar and featuring a cast including Mel Gibson, Curtis ’50 Cent’ Jackson, Nora Zehetner, Brian Van Holt, and Randall J. Bacon, Boneyard is already shaping up to be a must-watch.

Here we go again. In recent years, Mel Gibson’s found himself stuck in a never-ending series of Dtv-style action thrillers, similar to the kind of fare Bruce Willis churned out before his retirement. Along with his contemporaries like John Travolta, John Cusack and many others, Gibson seems totally stuck in a rut, with virtually all of these films (most of which he only has minor roles in) going totally unnoticed. Has anyone seen Panama, Agent Game, On the Line, Confidential Informant, Desperation Road, Dangerous or Force of Nature? There have been some bright spots, such as the solid Bandit (a movie he was proud of when I interviewed him) or Fatman, but for the most part, Gibson’s career as an actor in mainstream movies seems limited to this kind of fare, which is a shame.

Nevertheless, he’s still out there cranking out VOD movies, with Boneyard being the latest.

XYZ Films knows a good thing when they see it, and that’s why the studio preemptively purchased the U.S. rights to Skyline: Warpath, a sequel in the Skyline universe starring Iko Uwais and Scott Adkins. Liam O’Donnell (Beyond Skyline) directs the threequel from his own script, with filming taking place in Indonesia. Heath, the longtime bassist of Japan’s most popular rock group X Japan, has died, the group confirmed today. He was 55.

The musician died October 29 of colorectal cancer, according to a statement from the group.

“It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of X Japan’s esteemed bass player Heath after his battle with colorectal cancer, on October 29th, 2023, at the age of 55,” the group said in a statement. “His cancer was found during an examination in June of this year. Despite his efforts to battle the disease, his condition declined suddenly in October, and he took his last breath in the hospital.

“We would like to express our heartfelt gratitude to those who cherished Heath throughout his lifetime. We, the members of X Japan have personally bid farewell to Heath, but are still deeply saddened and dismayed by his sudden loss.”

Ozzy Osbourne is set to undergo a fourth surgery amid his health issues.

The rocker spoke about having another op for the spinal injury he suffered after a 2019 fall during a candid chat on “The Osbournes Podcast” this week.

Ozzy — who had to cancel his Power Trip festival performance scheduled for October — shared, “I’m going for an epidural soon because what they’ve discovered is the neck has been fixed.

“Below the neck there’s two vertebrae where the bike hit me and disintegrated, there’s nothing left of ’em.”

Exclusive: Lionsgate is launching sales in Cannes on thriller Boneyard, the true crime thriller starring Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson and Oscar winner Mel Gibson.

Currently in production, the film is based on the true crime events of the serial killer known as the Bone Collector.

In the movie, FBI Special Agent Petrovick (Gibson) is recruited to profile the serial killer responsible for the infamous “boneyard” killings, after Police Chief Carter (Jackson) discovers the remains of eleven women. As the police force, narcotics agency, and FBI lock horns, a tangled web of intrigue turns everyone into a suspect.

Brian Van Holt, who starred opposite Kate McKinnon in limited series Jo vs. Carole, is also starring in the feature whose cast includes Nora Zehetner (The Right Stuff). Co-starring is Michael Sirow, most recently seen in SXSW movie The Wrath Of Becky.

Colin Bates, who produced the Halle Berry thriller Kidnap and the Arnold Schwarzenegger zombie drama Maggie, is producing the hot indie with Vincent McDaniel.

Inspired by true events, Boneyard tells of an FBI special agent, played by Gibson, who along with the Albuquerque police department, is hunting for a serial killer nicknamed The Bone Collector. The chief of police and one of his officers, however, have a contrary view of the manhunt, believing someone in their own department may be the killer.

Jackson is playing the chief while Van Holt plays the officer who is connected to the case through a missing niece.
