“The DTs In High Definition”
By Raymond Benson
In 1945, Billy Wilder’s The Lost Weekend was a big deal. If it wasn’t the first Hollywood movie to portray alcoholism as a serious problem, then it was certainly the most visible and influential one.
In the latter 1940s, Hollywood’s output changed from the sunshine-feel good-entertainments that the Golden Age had produced in the 30s and early 40s. American GIs came home from the war, and many were disillusioned and cynical. The war was the catalyst for Americans to “grow up.” They were ready to accept more serious, darker fare. Thus, we got film noir—crime pictures that were full of angst and betrayals—and we got the “social problem film.” The latter tackled subjects that Hollywood had previously never touched—alcoholism, racism, anti-Semitism, government corruption, and drug abuse. Titles like Gentleman’s Agreement,...

It’s a great time to be a horror fan. Not only are Netflix, Hulu, Amazon Prime Video and Shudder awash with all kinds of horror movies old and new, but the Criterion Channel is getting in on the gruesome action with a month’s worth of horror titles from the 1970s.
The subscription service is the digital offshoot of the Criterion Collection, which for more than 35 years has been providing definitive archival home video versions of classic and contemporary films from around the world. Criterion launched its streaming service last year as a way to offer a curated cross-section of its library of films online.
Horror has always had a respectful home at Criterion, with the company publishing definitive editions of a number of the genre’s landmark films. The October rollout of horror movies for the Halloween season is similar to what other companies are doing, but the focus is the difference here.

Above: French grande for Long Weekend. Artist Léo Kouper.Update: Sadly, because of coronavirus precautions closing down all of Lincoln Center yesterday, this series has been cancelled. It may only ever exist in poster form. One of the most interesting and eclectic New York repertory series in many a moon starts today at Film at Lincoln Center. Titled “Mapping Bacurau,” the series has been handpicked by filmmakers Kleber Mendonça Filho and Juliano Dornelles to highlight the varied cinematic influences behind their current arthouse-meets-grindhouse sensation. The result is a baker’s dozen of eccentric horror movies, spaghetti westerns, revenge saga,s and essential texts of the Cinema Novo movement. Having art directed the U.S. poster for Bacurau with illustrator Tony Stella and designer Midnight Marauder, it was fascinating to see how the posters for these films had echoes in our final design, even if only coincidentally. “Cinema won tonight,” Neon head Tom Quinn said as he escorted his father to his waiting limo in the parking garage of the Soho House, where a long line of partygoers was still waiting well past 11 p.m. just to get inside to the wild and very packed celebration Quinn’s company had planned for its Oscar nominees, Parasite and Honeyland.
When I saw Quinn at the Indie Spirit Awards on Saturday, he knew it was going to be a good night on some level, but I can tell you he didn’t know it was going to be this good. As we were talking, another Neon associate arrived with the newly engraved Oscar for Best Picture that has Neon’s name on it. Australian screenwriter, Everett De Roche, has penned some mid-sized horror hits recently in Storm Warning, Nature's Grave (review) and Nine Miles Down, but it seems he's aiming for something a tad grander in his latest script - a modern pirate adventure called High Seas.
I've known that High Seas was in development at Resolution Independent (the dudes behind Storm Warning and the upcoming Pa flick Wynter Dark) for about a year now, but word from producer Pete Ford is that De Roche has turned in the final draft and that everyone's pretty excited about it.
Ford also has this to say about High Seas: "It's the story about a father and son that have to battle pirates, the elements and themselves to save the day... okay that sounds kind of naff, trust me - it isn't. It kicks complete ass!"
After the break we've got three pieces of High Seas...

Ford also has this to say about High Seas: "It's the story about a father and son that have to battle pirates, the elements and themselves to save the day... okay that sounds kind of naff, trust me - it isn't. It kicks complete ass!"
After the break we've got three pieces of High Seas...

Peter and Carla are a married couple on the outs. In a half-assed attempt to rekindle their relationship they decide to take a romantic camping trip to a secluded Australian beach. It’s pretty clear from the get-go that this will be an epic fail. All they do is bicker, bicker, bicker. They clearly need to get divorced as soon as humanly possible. But away they go with their dog, fancy new camping equipment and Peter’s gun. Actually, Carla is ready to turn back pretty early. But Peter isn’t having it. Neither rain nor near-accidents nor getting lost will keep him from finding this spot and having a good fucking time, goddamnit!
Eventually, they do find the spot. And then the weirdness starts. Carla notices it first because ladies are intuitive like that,...

Gory greetings horroryearbook alumni! Welcome to another exciting edition of It Came From The Mailbox, a column where your old pal Brain Hammer reviews whatever random crap the good folks at horroryearbook decide to throw my way. Nature's Grave (aka Long Weekend) stars James Caviezel and Claudia Karvan as an unhappily married couple named Peter and Carla. In a last ditch effort to save the marriage Peter plans a weekend holiday on a remote beach in Australia. From the start, the vacation seems cursed. First Peter & Carla hit a kangaroo, then they lose their gps and cell phones. When they finally find the private beach they are looking for, the other couple they were supposed to meet up with is nowhere in sight.

Have I mentioned how much I love Magnolia lately? Not only do they release some of our favorite films on DVD, but they go to extreme lengths to make those DVD's fanboy centric. Take The Mutant Chronicles for example. Not only did Magnolia pick up Simon Hunter's mostly misunderstood little scifi epic for distro (interview with Hunter), but they gave it a 2-disc Director's Cut and loaded it with documentaries and commentaries galore. That's what I'm talking about.
This week also marks the release of another overdue epic, the Russian fantasy film Wolfhound. This one's about two years coming so I'm very much looking forward to giving it a spin.
Of course how could we forget to mention Jaimie Blanks' remake of the classic Australian 70s cult film, Long Weekend (review). It's been retitled Nature's Grave in the states so keep an eye out for Jim Cavizel's face covered...

DVD Links: DVD News | Release Dates | New Dvds | Reviews | RSS Feed Unfortunately it's a very bad week for DVD and Blu-ray releases, but let's rundown the list anyway as maybe some of you are looking forward to at least renting one or two of these. The Soloist The best new film of the bunch has to be The Soloist, but even it isn't a stand-out masterpiece by any stretch. It does have a couple of good performances and is certainly worth a once over, but as far as being a purchase I would definitely recommend against it. Mutant Chronicles This action-sci-fi feature starring Thomas Jane, John Malkovich and Ron Perlman is probably the title I am most interested in renting and a little upset I forgot to request a review copy, but Netflix will take care of that. Race to Witch Mountain Ugh, just a bad, bad movie. Kids may...

If you've upgraded your system to include a Blu-ray player, then this is a pretty good week for you as August 4th will see the release of a few old friends including Blade II, Hannibal Rising, and Mimic. On the newer end of the spectrum, we have sci-fi/horror hybrids Alien Uprising and The Mutant Chronicles along with watch-it-at-your-own-risk fare like Cravings, The Chaos Experiment, Nature's Grave, and the anthology Slices.
If you have kids (or even if you don't), then Daffy Duck's Quackbusters is a must buy along with the Evil Christmas duo of Psycho Santa and Satan Claus. Once the kiddies are tucked safely in bed, then you'll want to pop in Hot Blood Sundae, which garnered a site record three different scores from Foy in his review, depending on how you choose to watch the flick. Rounding things out is 1982's Trapped, starring cult favorite Henry Silva.

For his fifth foray into the horror genre, acclaimed Storm Warning director Jamie Blanks has taken on a remake of one of the most beloved Australian cult films of all time, Long Weekend. Big shoes right? Not only is Colin Eggleston‘s original ecological thriller considered a hidden gem of Australian 70s cinema, but when your story requires the only two human characters you’ve got to be so despicable that they are actually the antagonists you’ve really got to have some finesse as a filmmaker.
For the most part, Blanks succeeds in making a passable mid-budget man vs. nature film with two great performances by Jim Caviezel and Claudia Karvan. But, as a modern Long Weekend redux I can’t help but be disappointed in some technical corners that were obviously cut,...

‘Not Quite Hollywood’ is more than just a documentary on Australian genre films, its an amazing and comprehensive look at movies that have influenced some of the greatest minds in cinema. When you watch this movie you better have a pen and something to write on because there are some “i cant believe I haven’t seen this film yet!” moments you will inevitably experience.
Mark Hartley wrote and directed this Australian(weird!) documentary with the help of Quentin Tarantino. Over the course of 5 years he interviewed 80+ writers, directors, actors and film critics which landed him with 250 hours of footage to edit. The doc premiered at the Melbourne International Film Festival in 2008 and took home the best documentary award at 50th Australian Film Institute Awards.

After the disappointingly short teaser trailer they release a month or so back, I'm glad to see that AMC decided to share their entire 9 minute Comic Con preview withe the world this afternoon... and yep, "Rover" even makes an appearance!
Synopsis:
An update to the cult favorite series from the 1960s about a government agent who is kidnapped and sent to a remote island known as "the Village".
Even though the writers went an entirely new direction with the 6-part redux, it still has a real classic quality so I have complete faith that the show will be just as mysterious and twisted as the original. Jim Caviezel feels perfectly cast as 6 too. I just watched him in the Long Weekend remake (or "Nature's Grave" to us here in the states and Canada) last week and was reminded at how great he can be. Jericho's Lennie James even makes an appearance too,...

The Jamie Blanks-directed remake of Long Weekend is now being called Nature's Grave . It's hitting DVD through Universal Home Entertainment on August 4th sans any extras. James Caviezel and Claudia Karvan star in this redo about a couple to venture off to a beach retreat and upset Mother Nature and all her lil' creatures. Watch a sales trailer here .

Poor James Caviezel. No matter what movie he stars in, he's probably going to be forever known as Jesus. I suppose there are worse things an actor can be remembered for than playing Christ. Having just finished fighting an alien monster in Outlander, Caviezel will next be seen on DVD this August battling more earthly terrors on his way to Nature's Grave. God help him.
Originally titled Long Weekend, Nature's Grave is director Jamie Blanks (Urban Legend, Valentine) near shot-for-shot remake of a moody 1978 Australian chiller about a bickering couple from the city (Caviezel and Claudia Karvan of Aquamarine) that head out for a long weekend getaway on a secluded beach and find themselves on the wrong side of mother nature after not showing it the proper respect. Bugs and snakes and other local animals of the land, air, and sea don't take kindly to these city slickers tossing their...

Producer and writer Anthony Egan is buzzing about his contribution to the growing 3-D horror market Flies . The film is the latest from director Jamie Blanks who jumped back onto the genre scene last year with Storm Warning and has a remake of Long Weekend on the way. " Flies 3D is a love letter to '70s animal attack flicks with a healthy dose of '50s mutant bugs," Egan tells ShockTillYouDrop.com. "It's been in development for well over a decade, back when the only Aussie flicks in the ball park were Dark Age , Razorback and, at a stretch, the original Long Weekend ." Egan scripted this throwback and is producing with producer David Hannay. "Jamie officially came on board last year, but turns out he'd been slipped an early draft by...

While I still haven't taken the time to write a review for his remake of Long Weekend, Jamie Blanks (Urban Legend, Storm Warning) is already out prepping his next horror film. During an interview with Inside Film, Australian producer David Hannay announced he would be teaming up with Anthony Egan to bring us a new 3D horror film entitled Flies, which will be directed by Blanks from a screenplay by Egan. Veteran and legendary producer David Hannay (Stone, The Man from Hong Kong) is teaming up with editor/writer Anthony Egan to produce what could potentially be Australias first feature film in stereoscopic 3D.

Australian producers David Hannay and Anthony Egan are teaming up to unleash the 3D horror film Flies , scripted by Egan. According to Inside Film, Jamie Blanks ( Storm Warning ) is attached to direct. Flies is based around the concept of genetically-engineered insects that escape and attack a small town. "It was a concept we thought that no one has really touched on the subject of 'nature goes nuts' in Australia," Egan tells If, somehow forgetting the choice "nature run amok" offerings that have and are coming out of his country including Blanks' own upcoming Long Weekend . "So we thought up an idea that would fit that genre and have appeal in the national marketplace." Production is expected to begin in the first quarter of 2009 and is...

I personally hated Douglas Buck's remake of Sisters, which is why I'm not all that excited for his next project, The Broken Imago. It's also a tough subject to cover, man vs nature, even Jamie Blanks failed with his remake of Long Weekend, which I had high expectations for. If you click over to Bdtv you can watch a very early teaser trailer for Imago, which looks so-so, what do you think? A vengeful nature has unleashed a powerful virus from the worlds diminishing rainforests. Transmitted through air and touch, the virus physically assaults the doomed infected, violently twisting their bodies into strange intolerable shapes.

**Please Note: This will be at the top for a while; be sure to scroll down for updated news stories!** Horror may currently be in a slump, but the 2008 American Film Market has shown a huge light at the end of the tunnel. This year showcased a record number of horror titles and Dread Central was on hand to catch a great deal of them. Some were good, some were bad but all showed that this genre still has plenty of lifeblood left. Many exhibitors were also kind enough to show us movie promos, while others coldly showed us the door (Lesbian Vampire Killers, I’m looking at you). The most promising show previews were easily Night of the Demons and Clive Barker’s Dread, with plenty of new projects being announced. Check out our full Afm '08 coverage here.

We just found a set of the first images from Jamie Blanks’ upcoming remaking of the nature gets revenge movie Long Weekend, which will be showing itself at the upcoming American Film Market in Santa Monica.
The remake stars Jim Caviezel and Claudia Karvan as a couple vacationing in an attempt to resurrect their dying marriage. A disrespect for nature leads to some pretty horrifying consequences, however, and soon they’re fighting for their lives.

Caviezel and Karvan book 'Weekend' trip
Jim Caviezel and Claudia Karvan will star in the suspense thriller "Long Weekend" for Arclight Films.
Jamie Blanks will direct from a script by Everett De Roche. Based on the 1978 Australian thriller of the same name, the story concerns a young couple on a camping trip who callously disregard the local environment, firing guns and wounding wildlife, until the wildlife starts to hit back. The 1978 version starred John Hargreaves and Briony Behets and was directed by Colin Eggleston.
"The original film was a great example of a classic chiller and was acclaimed by audiences and critics alike," Arclight head Gary Hamilton said. "We think the time is right to make this new film and that it will have a huge appeal to audiences worldwide."
Hamilton and Nigel Odell are producing. Principal photography is scheduled to begin in Australia in mid-November.
Darclight, the genre division of Arclight Films, will handle worldwide distribution and sales of the film, commencing at AFM, which runs Oct.
