There's always been something unsettling about someone being almost recognizably human; it's why the term "uncanny valley" exists. Sometimes it doesn't even have to do with appearances; like in Invasion of the Body Snatchers, the horror comes more from strange behavior than a character's appearance. Where's Rose is a 2022 horror movie that also explores the creepiness inherent in a person who looks exactly like they should, but abruptly begins behaving in strange and startling ways. Ty Simpkins, who played Dalton in the Insidious horror franchise, stars as Eric, a teenager whose young sister goes missing in the woods. Although she comes back seemingly unharmed, Eric suspects that the person who came out of the woods isn't the same one who went in. Made on a shoestring budget raised in part through crowdfunding, Where's Rose is a haunting look at the horrors that can lie behind innocent faces.

Nick Robinson, who played Zach Mitchell in Jurassic World, went on to have a successful acting career with notable roles in films like Love, Simon and TV shows like A Teacher and Maid. Exclusive: TriCoast Worldwide has locked down international sales rights to the coming-of-age film Dear Zoe, starring Stranger Things‘ Sadie Sink, with plans to screen the pic for potential buyers and festival reps at the 2022 Cannes Film Festival.

The indie from director Gren Wells (The Road Within) is based on Philip Beard’s novel of the same name, which was selected by Booklist, a magazine of the American Library Association, as one of the ten best debut novels of 2005. It centers on Tess (Sink), who suffers an unimaginable loss alongside her family, and finds support from two surprising sources: her biological father (Theo Rossi)—a lovable slacker from the wrong side of the tracks—and the charming but dangerous juvenile delinquent next door (newcomer Kweku Collins).

Marc Lhormer and Melissa Martin adapted the screenplay for the film, which also stars Jessica Capshaw (Grey’s Anatomy), Justin Bartha (Godfather of Harlem) and Vivien Lyra Blair...

North Carolina officials have approved a quintet of film and television projects to being filmed in the state as a part of its 25% rebate on production expenses, with shooting starting by the end of October.

The news was announced Tuesday, six months after almost the entire entertainment industry halted production due to the Covid-19 pandemic. State officials said the new projects will generate a direct in-state spend of more than $107 million while creating 8,671 job opportunities, including 650 crew positions for the state’s film professionals.

“Our state’s film industry continues to welcome new projects from prominent production companies,” said Gov. Roy Cooper. “The industry provides good jobs and opportunities for local businesses while showcasing on a big stage what North Carolina has to offer.”

The five projects approved for the North Carolina Film and Entertainment Grant include the following:

— “USS Christmas,” a made-for-television movie about a newspaper reporter who finds love on an aircraft carrier.
