The Descent Part 2 is a very thrilling follow-up to the phenomenal horror film, but the ending raises many questions. 2009's The Descent 2 focuses on claustrophobic horror, following on from the events of The Descent, which saw a team of female friends on a spelunking expedition that turns into a fight for survival after a species of subterranean monsters called Crawlers are discovered in the caves. The group end up fighting for their lives while fighting with each other. While the premise is straightforward, The Descent 2's ending is much more ambiguous than its predecessor.
Director Jon Harris's sequel to The Descent sends a rattled Sarah (Shauna Macdonald) who returns after surviving the events of The Descent and a rescue team descend back into the caves to find out if any of her friends are still alive. Its not long until Sarahs repressed memories rush back, as do the deadly Crawlers.

A truly great horror sequel can be difficult to pull off, as much of the tension and suspense have already been exhausted in the first movie, although some incredible horror sequels from the 2000s have managed this feat. Whether its the terrifying pursuit of unstoppable slasher movie villains or less-definable foes in supernatural series, the very nature of horror movies opens the door for sequels, as its easy for a sinister force to reemerge to take on a new slate of unsuspecting victims.
Many of the best horror movies from the 2000s received sequels, and some were certainly better than others. The greatest follow-ups often led to the development of major horror movie franchises, like Saw or Final Destination, that still have upcoming releases to this day. The 2000s were a great time for horror movies and an era filled with many undisputed movie classics, such as 28 Days Later and The Descent,...

Gavan O’Herlihy, best known for playing Richie and Joanie Cunningham’s disappearing brother Chuck on “Happy Days,” has died. He was 70.
O’Herlihy died in Bath, England on Sept. 15, his brother, Cormac O’Herlihy, confirmed to Variety. A cause of death was not disclosed, but his brother confirmed that it was not Covid-19.
After making an appearance on an episode of “The Mary Tyler Moore Show” in 1973, O’Herlihy broke out on “Happy Days” as Chuck, the eldest Cunningham sibling. Chuck was a high school jock and was almost always seen carrying a basketball. He was played by three different actors — Ric Carrott in the show’s pilot, O’Herlihy for the first two seasons and Randolph Roberts for two episodes in Season 2 — giving way to the pejorative “Chuck Cunningham syndrome” to describe TV characters who disappeared from shows and were later written off as if they never existed.

Here's everything coming to Amazon Prime instant video in March 2020!
For its new releases in March 2020, Amazon Prime is enlisting help from some horror friends.
Yes, horror is the name of the game this month with Night of the Living Dead (albeit the 2007 version), The Crazies, and The Descent all arriving on March 1. And if that weren't enough, Pet Sematary comes a little later on on May 19. Look at Church the cat in that thumbnail image. How could you not want to watch his spooky adventures?
The Amazon original offerings are typically sparse for March 2020 but still pack some punch. Italian import ZeroZeroZero stars Gabriel Byrne and arrives on May 6. Then British import Agatha Christie's The Pale Horse comes a little later on March 13.
For what it's worth, Jay and Silent Bob Reboot debuts on March 13 so it's not all horror and all European TV all the time.

We’ve already touched base on the Netflix titles heading our way next month, but what about Amazon Prime?
Though the former is widely considered to be the undisputed heavyweight of the online streaming world, it didn’t take long for Prime to become a tantalizing prospect, no thanks to kick-ass original series like The Expanse, The Boys and The Man in the High Castle.
The real issue for the end consumer is juggling all those subscriptions, particularly now that Disney+ is live across North America (March 24th for those in the UK). Be that as it may, as February nears its end, Amazon has detailed all of the content bound for Prime in March 2020.
Among the new additions are a host of big-name horror films, including Neil Marshall’s The Descent and its creepy sequel. Best of all? Pet Sematary, the reimagining of Stephen King’s literary developed by Kevin Kolsch and Dennis Widmyer.

We have a list of the new Hulu movies and shows arriving in March 2020.
March sees the beginning of one of TV's more interesting experiment in 2020. Hulu's new releases for March 2020 are highlighted by the launch of the torturously-named "FX on Hulu" in which certain FX shows will premiere exclusively on Hulu.
Yes, when Disney set out up the entertainment industry, it gained more brands than it knew what to do with. And that's how you get stuff like FX on Hulu. The streaming/cable hybrid begins in earnest in March with two series, Alex Garland's sci-fi Devs and the weird Lil Dickey comedy Dave. More FX on Hulu is set to arrive in April as well.

If you wanted to have a romantic comedy movie night, you better get going because a number of classics are leaving Netflix in September.
“Forgetting Sarah Marshall” and Jennifer Garner’s “13 Going on 30” are departing the streaming service on Sept. 1, as well as “Just Friends” with Ryan Reynolds and Amy Smart. For dramatic fare, catch “Dead Poets Society,” “The Imitation Game,” and Christopher Nolan’s “Batman Begins” and “The Dark Knight” before they leave at the beginning of the month.
And with Bradley Cooper and Lady Gaga’s “A Star Is Born” hitting theaters on Oct. 5, it might also be a good idea to check out the 1976 remake with Barbra Streisand before it leaves Sept. 15.
Here’s the full list of what’s leaving Netflix this month:

Insidious: Chapter 2 joins the less than stellar ranks of films like The Descent: Part 2 in being an immediate continuation of a horror film that, though ending with a looming threat, did not call for a sequel. After a prologue set in 1986, the film kicks off on the night its predecessor ended, with Rose Byrne’s Renai Lambert questioned by police over the supernatural events that led to the murder by strangulation of psychic Elise Rainier (Lin Shaye). Insidious’ final moments saw Elise confront the strange behaviour of Renai’s husband Josh (Patrick Wilson), the man now seemingly possessed by the spirit of a black-veiled bride thanks to the Poltergeist meets A Nightmare on Elm Street mishaps that encompassed the film’s third act. Chapter 2 sees the Lambert family, as well as new Elise stand-in Carl (Steve Coulter...

More “Blair Witch Project” style shenanigans arrive in the form of “A Night in the Woods”, a British effort which could at least never be accused of not living up to its title, following a trio of the usual types wandering around the moors and forests of Northern England. The found footage film was directed by Richard Parry (“South West 9”), who previously worked as a conflict zone cameraman, helming various documentaries in Iraq and Afghanistan, with cinematography by Simon Dennis (“The Sweeney”), and the international cast of American star Scoot McNairy (“Monsters”), Australian actress Anna Skellern (“The Descent: Part 2”) and up and coming British actor Andrew Hawley (“Snow White And The Huntsman”). The Vertigo Films release is set for a brief run in UK cinemas in early September, arriving shortly afterwards on DVD. The very recognisable plot follows an American called Brody (Scoot McNairy), his girlfriend Kerry (Anna Skellern...

On February 3 CBS Films releases Hammer's The Woman In Black, an old fashioned ghost story starring Daniel Radcliffe (Harry Potter 1-7.2) and Ciaran Hinds (There Will Be Blood). With a screenplay by Jane Goldman (X Men: First Class, Kick Ass), based on the novel by Susan Hill, the film is directed by James Watkins who helmed Eden Lake in addition to writing The Descent: Part 2. It's a big moment for Daniel Radcliffe, embarking on his first major leading role since the end of the triumphant Harry Potter franchise. It's an interesting choice to attempt to play someone so far removed - "lawyer" isn't as synonymous with youth as say, "boy wizard" - from his signature character. I had a chance to hop on the phone with him recently and talk about the process behind the transformation.

This summer marked what was very likely the last time that actor, Daniel Radcliffe would play the character he's best known for by fans all over the globe, Harry Potter. The series came to a close with 'Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Part 2,' and from its end comes a new chapter in the career of Radcliffe. The next time you see him in theaters will be when he's being haunted by 'The Woman in Black.' The ghastly tale looks like one of those unabashedly serious horrors that go without a single moment of levity. View the brand-new teaser trailer for it below, courtesy of Yahoo, but first, the very straight-to-the-point synopsis. A good bit of casting news for ABC's upcoming "Once Upon a Time" from "Lost" executive producers Edward Kitsis and Adam Horowitz has come in over the past several days so we thought we'd just condense everything into one easy-to-find location.
Heading up the prospective new series, which is set in the small town of Storybrook, where the magic and mystery of fairy tales may be real, is Jennifer Morrison ("House M.D.") as Anna, “a child of two fairy tale characters who is fated to save everyone from [a] curse.” As Morrison explained it to TVLine, “Basically, it’s as if every fairy tale character ever written is real and actually exists, but they’ve been cursed and they don’t know their true identities.” (For example, Ginnifer Goodwin ("Big Love") plays Snow White, while Lana Parrilla ("Swingtown") is the Evil Queen.) “They are living in our reality not knowing who they truly are.

Hammer's upcoming ghost story The Woman In Black starring Daniel Radcliffe has a brand new teaser trailer online. And as most good teasers do, it hints and tantalizes without giving any story away. We're also given a nice taste of the film's effectively creepy atmosphere. Based on the book by author Susan Hill, scripted by Jane Goldman (Kick-ass), and directed by James Watkins (The Descent: Part 2), the film also stars Ciarán Hinds, Janet McTeer, Shaun Dooley, Alisa Khazanova, Sidney...

With Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 hitting theaters this July, Daniel Radcliffe is shedding his wand and Hogwarts uniform, venturing to new projects. First up is the horror/thriller The Woman in Black. Radcliffe plays a lawyer in the ghost story written by Jane Goldman (Stardust, Kick-Ass, The Debt, X-Men: First Class), from the acclaimed novel by Susan Hill. Directed by The Descent: Part 2 screenwriter, James Watkins, you can see the eerie teaser below via IGN.
Arthur Kipps is a man touched by tragedy as we learn following his storming away in a temper from Victorian festivities, complete with ghost stories, on a snowy Christmas Eve. He is fully aware that stories of ghosts may be told in frivolous fashion, but that ghosts themselves — real ghosts — rarely manifest in such a mood. Ashamed of his bad behavior and wishing to explain himself and make it up to his wife,...

The first big post-Harry Potter role for Daniel Radcliffe is in the thriller The Woman in Black, which is a period-set tale about a young lawyer who encounters a ghost when hired to sort out an estate's papers. The movie is also part of the return of the once-great Hammer Films label. A teaser for The Woman in Black has been released, and though there really isn't much to it -- shadows and the implication of some scares -- you can check it out below. James Watkins (Eden Lake; The Descent: Part 2 screenwriters) directs, with a script by Jane Goldman (Stardust, Kick-Ass, X-Men: First Class) based on the novel by Susan Hill. The novel is very well-regarded as a now-classic ghost story, despite only having been published in 1983. Seeing Daniel Radcliffe's first major film role after Harry Potter is probably reason enough to check out the film, but...

Rick Baker. Friend of apes. Maker of monsters. Seven time Oscar winner. And that lucky number seven was for The Wolfman, shared with fellow Efx maestro Dave Elsey. Their on-stage speech was great, but the extended Thank You Cam was even better. Both Baker and Elsey thanked Jack Pierce and Dick Smith for inspiring them. Though there were grumblings online that the Academy clip showed the CG transformation rather then the make-up. It is always a treat to see our own getting the gold.

As 2010 draws to a close, Lionsgate is busy polishing up its DVD and Blu-ray slate for 2011 with the release of two new terrors as well as an old classic which there can be only one of!
Virus X - February 1st
This February the terror is real as Virus X makes its DVD, Digital Download and On Demand debut from Lionsgate. An Official Selection of the 2010 Shriekfest and the Eerie Horror Fest 2010, the film stars Domiziano Arcangeli (The Brides of Sodom) and Sybil Danning (Halloween). This sci-fi DVD debut also contains two production featurettes.
For a group of medical scientists, time is not on their side when they are exposed to a hyper-mutant form of the H1N1 virus while in their lab. The team has only three days left to live with no hope of seeing the outside world again. But while they are trapped and fear for their lives,...

"America Lost & Found: The Bbs Story" (1968-1972)
Released by Criterion Collection
A set of seven films that's as diverse and wild as the era in which they were born, Criterion's reassembly of Bbs Studios' run from 1968 through 1972 boasts influential hits like "Easy Rider," "Five Easy Pieces" and "King of Marvin Gardens" and obscurities like Jack Nicholson's directorial debut "Drive, He Said" and Henry Jaglom's "A Safe Place" that have never been on DVD before. New interviews, vintage documentaries and much more from directors Bob Rafelson, Peter Bogdanovich (whose "Last Picture Show" is also included), Nicholson and the late Dennis Hopper highlight a collection that doubles as a history of when there was a changing of the guard in American cinema.

Daniel Radcliffe in The Woman in Black
Photo: Hammer Films I have no idea how far Daniel Radcliffe will be able to take his career beyond the Harry Potter franchise, which will be ending with Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part II on July 15, 2011, but he's managed some work since starring as the titular star of one of the biggest filmed franchise ever such as December Boys in 2007 and a voice over bit on "The Simpsons." Nobody can resist a good tragedy. In the wake of news regarding a film based on the trapped Chilean Miners comes word of a currently-in-development-motion picture based on the events surrounding the Great Chicago Fire, considered one of the biggest disasters in American history. J Blakeson, director of last year’s critically acclaimed The Disappearance of Alice Creed, is in negotiations with Warner Bros. to direct the film, which is currently titled Hell and Gone. The extremely busy, and highly reputable, Jonah Nolan (co-writer of The Dark Knight), meanwhile, penned the screenplay which The Hollywood Reporter describes as “a Titanic-like historical tragedy and love story”.
Aside from Alice Creed, Blakeson also wrote the screenplay to The Descent: Part 2. Jonah Nolan finished the first draft of his screenplay to The Dark Knight Rises back in September, and has since been attached to numerous projects, including the sci-fi thriller Interstellar,...

Gemma Arterton in The Disappearance of Alice Creed
Photo: Anchor Bay Films J Blakeson's The Disappearance of Alice Creed is an exercise in simplicity. Three actors, one premise and a little bit of conflict goes a long way with this little film that could. While I won't be offering a rave review here, credit is due for a certain level of restraint in remaining dedicated enough to refuse adding genre flourishes to cheapen the mood for the first 70 minutes of this film. Unfortunately, the film can't sustain itself for the entire 98 minutes as it grows a bit tiresome and careless in the final moments.
The story opens with Danny (Martin Compston) and Vic (Eddie Marsan) collecting the necessary tools and supplies to prepare an apartment room for the kidnapping of the young daughter of a wealthy businessman, the titular Alice Creed (Gemma Arterton).
What's needed to pull off such a task?...

I had been pushing off my neo-noir retrospective review of Christopher Nolan's Memento (2000) for numerous reasons. Initially, I kept pushing it off so that we could run it the same week that his latest film, Inception -- one of the most awaited films of the summer -- hit theaters. Well, that week has finally come (I have my midnight tickets, do you?), yet I was still feeling a bout of procrastination when it came to writing about Memento. Despite my rationalizing, the main reason I kept pushing the review off was, regardless of my love of the film and noir in general, I simply did not know what original insights I could bring to the table. Memento, like so many other great films before it, has inspired a great deal of criticism and analysis. That said, I'm tapping out. I'm playing my get out of jail free card. I'm writing my first real-time review.

Horror films are not just about deadly monsters that spring up in the dark and serve you a good chill. It’s about being helpless in a situation that you find yourself in and struggle hard to survive. And it is this helplessness that makes the genre of horror so popular.
‘The Descent’ in 2005 added something more — the helplessness of the fairer sex as an all girls team gets stranded amidst a bunch of monsters.
The sequel, tries to do that, but ends up being a poor remake of a decent first film.

Collider reader “Dan” has sent us some concept art of Chris Hemsworth as Thor. Earlier today, we ran a story about AICN landing concept art of Chris Evans in his Captain America outfit. While we were very circumspect about saying these images were official, it is telling that both of these images have leaked today and they have the same artistic style. You can also see how they compare to the official shot Marvel released in April.
What’s especially cool about these Thor images is it’s the first shot we’ve seen of the Norse god wielding his hammer, Mjolner. It’s cool that not only does the top of the hammer glow, but you’ll notice that the grip also emanates blue light. It’s also interesting to see the size of Mjolner in proportion to Thor’s body. Of course, it’s not the size of the hammer,...

Those who have watched "Iron Man 2" know that John Slattery ("Mad Men") plays Tony Stark's father, Howard Stark, in the film. But the character will have an even bigger part in "The First Avenger: Captain America," where we'll see how Stark Expo was founded. So who will play the young Howard Stark? According to Salon, it will be "Mamma Mia" and "An Education" star Dominic Cooper. While there's no quote, the actor revealed the news during an interview for his new movie "Tamara Drewe." Earlier this month, "Iron Man" director Jon Favreau confirmed that Howard Stark will be in "Captain America," stating: "Yeah, because he was around then. ['Captain America' takes place during] World War II. [Howard Stark] was starting out during that time, and [he] was involved with the war effort, much like Howard Hughes." Back in October, Cooper was approached by Marvel to play Fandral in "Thor." The role ended up going to Stuart Townsend,...

In a genre that so heavily features leading ladies, strong heroines and final girls, we still haven’t had many memorable ones as of late. Except, of course, The Descent’s Sarah Carter. Traumatized by the deaths of her husband and daughter, betrayed by her best friend, possibly a little mad and yet still mustering up the wherewithal to bash monster skulls, she was played with emotional depth and notable strength by Scottish actress Shauna MacDonald in Neil Marshall’s original film, and returns to the caves in The Descent: Part 2 (now out on DVD from Lionsgate).

It's Complicated: "The most revealing moment in writer-director Nancy Meyers' It's Complicated is when Jane Adler (Meryl Streep) visits her shrink to plead for advice about the affair she's caught up in. Though she's been divorced for ten years, she's recently taken up with her ex, who's got a new young wife of his own, and the resulting fling has Jane feeling guilty. Turning to a mental health professional for judgment about whether her actions have been evil or not, she's told: "It's not good. It's not bad." That's about all that can be said for Meyers' film, which is the latest in a line of wish-fulfillment movies that place as much emphasis on set design as story, and seem almost adorably unaware of actual struggles and real-world emotions. It's Complicated is certainly pleasant enough, full of happy actors and easy characters, and it's even got a few small laughs,...
