‘The Mean One’ VOD Review
Image
Stars: David Howard Thornton, Krystle Martin, Chase Mullins, John Bigham, Erik Baker, Flip Kobler, Amy Schumacher | Written by Flip and Fin Kobler | Directed by Steven Lamorte

The Mean One, along with Mad Heidi and Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey was part of an unexpected crop of horror and exploitation films based on children’s tales that dropped last Christmas. Since Dr. Suess’ Grinch is still under copyright the makers of this film had to change a few names to bring us the tale of Cindy You-Know-Who and the residents of Newville’s battle against the evil green creature known as The Mean One.

Our story begins with a familiar flashback accompanied by the rhyming narration of Christopher Sanders but, in a twist, just as young Cindy (Saphina Chanadet; Balance of the Force) is about to change The Mean One’s attitude her mother appears and attacks him, getting herself killed in the process.

‘The Island’ VOD’ Review
Image
Stars: Michael Jai White, Edoardo Costa, Cami Storm, Jackson Rathbone, Esther Brooks, Wayne Gordon, Gillian White, Amber Townsend | Written by Michael Caissie, Philippe Martinez | Directed by Shaun Paul Piccinino

The Island wastes no time in establishing just how evil its villain, Manuel is. As he’s talking to Nora, a singer auditioning at one of his properties, the waiter spills her drink on her. His response isn’t to fire the man but to stab him in the neck and tell the shocked woman, “Go get cleaned up, you work for me now.”

In Los Angeles Mark and his partner Phil are working undercover setting up a drug bust. This being an action film it naturally goes bad, but that’s not the worst thing Mark is going to have to deal with today. He gets a call telling him his brother has been murdered on the island where they grew up.

The Mean One: Grinch-inspired horror film reaches VOD in October
Image
XYZ Films gave director Steven Lamorte’s horror film The Mean One, a “violent slasher parody” that draws clear inspiration from the Dr. Seuss classic How the Grinch Stole Christmas!, a theatrical release in the U.S. last December. I watched the movie at the time, and you can read my 5/10 review at This Link. If you didn’t catch The Mean One last year, you may be glad to hear that DeskPop Entertainment is now planning to give the film a VOD release on October 3rd!

Lamorte gave the following statement to The Hollywood Reporter: “We’re so excited to bring The Mean One to our amazing fans and audiences around the world with the team at Deskpop. Their specialty in working with genre films like ours make them the perfect partner for our unique brand of Christmas chaos!“

DeskPop’s Mat Levy added: “I am thrilled to...

‘Judgement’: Portia Doubleday, Christine Adams & Ken Kirby Join ABC Pilot
Image
Exclusive: Portia Doubleday (Mr. Robot), Christine Adams (Black Lightning) and Ken Kirby (Good Trouble) are set as series regulars opposite Sarah Shahi, Reid Scott and François Arnaud in Judgement, ABC’s drama pilot from former Charmed showrunner Joey Falco and 20th Television.

Written and executive produced by Falco, Judgement is a high-stakes legal soap that redefines the genre by playing out over two timelines. Fifteen years from now, a woman (Shahi) being vetted for a Supreme Court seat recounts her experience at a prominent D.C. law firm in 2023, where the only thing more controversial than the cases was her messy love life, caught between two feuding brothers. Now, with a Supreme Court seat on the line, all of her darkest secrets are at risk of coming out, threatening her nomination, her reputation and her marriage.

Doubleday will play Eloise ‘Ellie’ Roth, a quirky, eternally optimistic, up-and-coming associate...

‘They Live in the Grey’ Review (Shudder)
Image
Stars: Michelle Krusiec, Madelyn Grace, Ken Kirby, Audrey Moore | Written and Directed by Abel Vang, Burlee Vang

They Live in the Grey opens on an ominous note as Claire, depressed by the death of her young son and the subsequent death of her marriage, attempts to hang herself. She’s also begun seeing ghosts, frequently violent and angry ones which results in her sleeping in a closet for safety.

As if this isn’t troubling enough she works for Child Protective Services dealing with cases of abuse. She’s been assigned to the case of Sophie whose parents are suspected of beating her. On her first meeting with the family she sees signs of a supernatural presence in the house. She feels the ghost may be to blame for the girl’s bruises but she can’t exactly tell her boss, who is already pressuring her to close the case,...

Michelle Krusiec
Social worker Claire (Michelle Krusiec) takes child abuse cases to heart more than most lately, as she is still reeling from the loss of her child.
