Showtime is unlocking a selection of original programming — for free, with ads — in a new channel on Pluto TV.

Amazon Prime Video New Releases: December 2020
Shohreh Aghdashloo, Wes Chatham, Steven Strait, Frankie Adams, Cara Gee, and Dominique Tipper in The Expanse (2015)
As a most unusual holiday season begins, it’s going to be harder for streaming services to demand our attention. With its new releases for December 2020, Amazon Prime is trying its best anyway.

This is actually an uncommonly jam-packed and intriguing roster of content for Bezos’s outfit. The list this month is highlighted by the release of The Expanse season 5 on Dec. 16. The beloved sci-fi series made the jump from Syfy to Amazon last year and things went well enough that it’s coming back for more. That returning show is complemented by another new genre series. The Wilds premieres on Dec. 11 and will follows a group of teenage girls lost (or Lost) on a deserted island.

Amazon’s original movies in December are just as intriguing. Riz Ahmed plays a heavy metal drummer losing his hearing in Sound of Metal on Dec. 4. Rachel Brosnahan stars as a mother...

Amazon Prime Announces Over 80 New Movies/TV Shows For December
Image
Hard as it is to believe with everything going on right now, but Christmas is only about five weeks away, and the streaming market is already looking crowded. Although Netflix can probably expect to continue their dominance over subscribers through the end of 2020, Amazon Prime are releasing some notable titles for the last month of the year, including original films like I’m Your Woman and new episodes of The Expanse.

In terms of the former, it stars Rachel Brosnahan of The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel in a picture about a woman who has to go on the run after her husband gets into trouble with his business partner. We’ll also be seeing the much-anticipated Sound of Metal, which features Riz Ahmed as a heavy metal drummer who develops hearing loss. This one will receive a limited theatrical release before heading to Amazon on December 4th. And elsewhere, viewers can expect...

Doc Mega-Hits ‘The Last Dance,’ ‘Tiger King’ Lead Hunt For Emmy Nominations
Image
Coronavirus stay-at-home orders dramatically impacted television viewing habits, driving up consumption of just about every genre of programming, including documentary. The resulting huge audience numbers and media attention generated by Tiger King and The Last Dance could give those nonfiction series a leg-up as Emmy voters prepare to mark their nomination ballots.

Tiger King, the seven-part series on “murder, mayhem and madness” in the eccentric world of big cat breeders and private zoo operators, dropped on Netflix March 20, just as lockdown orders were being imposed across much of the U.S. Director Eric Goode is the first to say people moored in their homes, TV remote in hand, helped turn the series into a cultural phenomenon.

“I do think we all must assume that that’s part of it,” Goode states. “For sure.”

Tiger King is contending for Emmy nominations in multiple categories, including Outstanding Documentary or Nonfiction Series. It...

'Tiger King' to 'Murder in the Bayou': How True Crime Docuseries Shine a Light on Larger Cultural Issues
Murder in the Bayou (2019)
Whodunit? That question has long animated true crime. But as crime documentaries — about murder in particular — have multiplied in recent years, so too have the approaches to telling such stories. For filmmakers seeking to transcend what can be a formulaic genre, the question of "Who?" has taken a back seat to "So what?" What do these stories about victims and perpetrators say about us as a society? And why does it matter?

Questions like those drew director Matthew Galkin, 46, to journalist Ethan Brown's 2016 book Murder in the Bayou: Who Killed the Women Known as ...

Voot Select, Viacom18’s newly launched Indian premium streaming service, is looking to build on the success of its Avod service Voot with a focus on content.

“The biggest advantage for us, which doesn’t exist at least with the international Ott platforms that exist here is that we have a very strong Avod business, and this is a paywall as a layer on top of the Avod service,” Ferzad Palia, head of Voot Select, Youth, Music and English Entertainment, Viacom18, told Variety. “We have 100 million monthly active users who we are extremely familiar with, and they interact with us very often, so we know their likes, dislikes, preferences, and their affinity to particular kinds of content.”

‘Murder in the Bayou': Ethan Brown’s Question Isn’t ‘Who Did It?’ It’s ‘Why Didn’t They Solve This?’
Murder in the Bayou (2019)
“Murder in the Bayou” — the Showtime docuseries from investigative journalist Ethan Brown and director Matthew Galkin — aired its fifth and final episode Friday. TheWrap spoke with Brown and Galkin about bringing the murder cases of eight women from Louisiana’s Jefferson Davis Parish to the small screen, and the questions that surround the still-open investigation.

Based on Brown’s best-selling novel of the same name, the series followed the murders of eight women who became known as the Jeff Davis 8: Loretta Lynn Chaisson Lewis, Ernestine Marie Daniels Patterson, Kristen Gary Lopez, Whitnei Dubois, Laconia “Muggy” Brown, Crystal Shay Benoit Zeno, Brittney Gary, and Necole Guillory. The oldest was 30; the youngest, 17.

Killed between 2005 and 2009, the similarities between the women were striking, both in life and death. All of their bodies discarded in similar ways — either dumped on the side of the road or in bodies of water — the majority were...
