After a lifetime of performing, Bruce Springsteen paused touring when the pandemic hit. But we all know the New Jersey native was born to rock. His latest documentary film, Road Diary: Bruce Springsteen and The E Street Band, directed by Springsteen’s longtime collaborator and Emmy and Grammy winner Thom Zimny, picks up with the now 75-year-old and his E Street Band’s return to rehearsals ahead of their 2023–2024 global trek, and includes personal interviews and rare archival footage. But the moment that left Zimny the most thunderstruck was that first show back, in Barcelona, which is shown in the doc. “The crowd overpowered the sound of the band. They sang along, not to every lyric, but to every nuance of the music. By the end of that Barcelona concert, everyone had tears in their eyes,” Zimny says. “It’s something that I’ll never forget.” Below, Zimny writes in his Road Diary.

When Bruce Springsteen stands onstage, staring out at the crowd, or with his head bowed, and cocks his guitar behind him, that’s a pose that’s now as iconic as the young Abraham Lincoln holding an ax over his shoulder. It’s a mythic image of American nobility. In “Road Diary: Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band,” we follow Springsteen, in his first concerts since the pandemic, as he reconnects with his fabled band and they rehearse for six days and go out on a tour that will take them from the U.S. to Europe, from 2023 to 2024.
All of this is intercut with grainy footage of Bruce performing in the ’70s and early ’80s. At this point, we’re so accustomed to the older, statelier Bruce that when we see some of the earlier clips, it’s almost shocking to register just how much he moved around onstage.

The Beach Boys are back.
The seminal American band, responsible for such tunes classics as “Wouldn’t It Be Nice,” “Surfin’ U.S.A.” and “Good Vibrations,” originally consisting of brother Brian, Dennis and Carl Wilson, their cousin Mike Love and friend Al Jardine, are getting the feature-length rock doc treatment. And with good reason – the story of The Beach Boys, a band known for their sunny disposition, is fraught with tragedy, disloyalty and acrimony. But all of that pain went into their music, creating something simultaneously euphoric and melancholy. And it will all make for a very juicy documentary – just in time for summer!
When does “The Beach Boys” come out?
“The Beach Boys” premiered Friday, May 24. Just in time for the long Memorial Day weekend, the unofficial kick-off to summer.
Is “The Beach Boys” streaming or in theaters?

America loves biopics about its most famous musicians; 2022's "Elvis" was a smash hit that turned Austin Butler into a star (as seen by his amazing turn as Feyd-Rautha in "Dune Part Two").
If The King is a movie star, it was only a matter of time before the Boss became one — and that time is now. 20th Century Studios and Disney will be producing the first Bruce Springsteen biopic, "Deliver Me From Nowhere." The film (adapted from the 2023 book of the same title by Warren Zanes) chronicles the making of Springsteen's sixth album, 1982's "Nebraska." Biopics are generally best when they don't try to cram a subject's whole life into a couple of hours, so that's a good sign.
Scott Cooper will write and direct "Deliver Me From Nowhere." Jeremy Allen White, currently starring on "The Bear," is in talks to play Springsteen; look and energy-wise, there's no better casting in Hollywood right now.

Exclusive: Fresh off success with the acclaimed docs Sly and Willie Nelson & Family, respectively chronicling the lives and careers of Sylvester Stallone and the iconic same-name country artist, Thom Zimny has signed with Artists First. The production and management company will look for opportunities to help the filmmaker showcase his talents in the narrative feature world.
An Emmy and Grammy Award-winning director, producer and editor, Zimny co-directed Willie Nelson & Family with Oren Moverman. The project marked the first authorized doc on the life and career of Nelson, premiering at the 2023 Sundance Film Festival before debuting on Paramount+.
Examining Stallone’s decades-long through Hollywood, the Zimny-helmed Sly debuted on the streamer after closing out TIFF last fall. Up next for the multi-hyphenate is The Beach Boys, a doc on the beloved surf rockers, co-directed with Frank Marshall for Disney+, which will be released later this year.

In “Sly,” director Thom Zimny captures a side of Sylvester Stallone seldom seen. The 95-minute docu exposes a relatable, vulnerable man who is often thought to be the movie characters he made iconic — Rocky Balboa or John Rambo.
Born in 1946, Stallone grew up in New York City’s Hell’s Kitchen with little money and a father who might have hated him. Zimny’s docu reveals that the fraught upbringing turned out to work in Stallone’s favor when it came to Hollywood. The star’s background not only drove him to be a success, but also inspired many of the roles he made legendary.
Unlike many celebrity docus, “Sly” isn’t a valentine to the star as much as a retrospective of the Oscar-winner’s unlikely, but highly successful 50-year career.
Variety spoke to Zimny ahead of the Netflix premiere of “Sly” on Nov. 3.

After a two-hour-plus main set that slammed home themes of mortality and impermanence and the way of all flesh, Bruce Springsteen reemerged on Madison Square Garden’s stage Saturday night, April 1, for his usual lengthy encore, and announced “something special for New York City.” He pointed over at Soozie Tyrell, who began a dead-on recreation of one of rock’s few canonical violin melodies, over piano from all-time-great arpeggio purveyor Roy Bittan. They eased the E Street Band into the 11-minute-long, 48-year-old mini-rock-opera “Jungleland,” played and sung with enough muscle...

Willie Nelson is many things – he’s a country music legend, a Texas icon, an outspoken activist and one of history’s most famous tax evaders. At 89, Nelson’s life so far has been colorful and gloriously overstuffed that it probably wouldn’t fit into a single documentary. That’s why “Willie Nelson & Family,” which just premiered at Sundance, isn’t a movie exactly, but an episodic independent series about his singular life and his music. TheWrap spoke to the series’ directors Tom Zimny and Oren Moverman at Sundance about how the film came together and finding their groove as filmmakers. “It was a great journey,” said Zimny.

If anyone knows Bruce Springsteen, it’s filmmaker Thom Zimny. The two have been collaborating for 20 years, from video shorts to retrospective documentaries like “The Promise: The Making of Darkness on the Edge of Town,” before moving his cameras into a New York theater for “Springsteen on Broadway.” Their latest collaboration is “Letter to You” (now streaming on Apple TV Plus), an intimate step inside Springsteen’s Jersey recording studio as he recorded his album of the same name. Zimny was there to capture the magic as the E Street Band recorded an album mostly live in the studio for the first time since 1984.

Remember back in the 1980s, when MTV still played music, and several artists started turning their music videos into “mini-movies”? The relationship between music and film has evolved a lot since then, and you now find several artists promoting their new projects with feature-length movies. After making one last year for his album Western Stars, [...]

The trailer for “Bruce Springsteen’s Letter to You” has arrived, and it promises a film that, besides being a making-of about his forthcoming album with the E Street Band, is in some ways an unofficial sequel to “Springsteen on Broadway,” with plenty of voiceover from the man about his feelings on music and brotherhood.
“I’m in the middle of a 45-year conversation with these men and women I’m surrounded by,” Springsteen is heard saying about the E Street Band, who joined him in his home studio in New Jersey for a mostly live-in-the-studio rendering of his new songs.
“I started playing the guitar because I was looking for someone to correspond with. And after all this time I still feel that need to talk to you,” the singer says, addressing the film’s audience.
“Our years of playing together have created an efficiency in the studio. Ideas tumble around the room.

Over the past half a century, Bruce Springsteen has played down-on-their-luck working men, wide-eyed youngsters growing up too quickly, local-circuit rockers who can only dream of playing stadiums, Cadillac ranchers tearin’ up the highway for cheap kicks, and on and on in his songs. Although he was playing roles in his songs, the same sense of hope for the future and desire to live a simpler life has connected his characters since the beginning, and those threads have only become more apparent as time has gone on. Now on his 20th album,...

"We're having fun! One, two..." Apple TV has released an official trailer for Bruce Springsteen's Letter to You, yet another new Bruce Springsteen documentary film coming up (in addition to Western Stars from last year). Bruce Springsteen's Letter to You captures Springsteen recording "Letter To You" live with the full E Street Band, and includes final take performances of ten originals from the new record. Written by Springsteen and directed by his frequent collaborator Thom Zimny, the film is a tribute to the E Street Band, to rock music itself and to the role it has played in Springsteen's life. Throughout the film, Springsteen shares his thoughts and feelings behind "Letter To You" and puts the new music into the context of his entire body of work. In that way, it's the next piece in the autobiographical series that began with the memoir Born to Run, continued with ...

Bruce Springsteen’s Letter to You will stream on Apple TV+ on October 23rd, the same day as the Letter to You album’s release. The documentary chronicles the five days Springsteen and the E Street Band spent in his Colts Neck, New Jersey, studio to record his new album late last year.

Columbia Records will release Bruce Springsteen’s new album Letter to You on Oct. 23, according to Rolling Stone. The 12-track album is the first to feature The E Street Band since High Hopes in 2014. As an introductory salutation to his 20th studio LP, Springsteen released the title-track lead single “Letter to You.”
“I love the emotional nature of ‘Letter to You,’” Springsteen said in a statement, via Rolling Stone. “And I love the sound of the E Street Band playing completely live in the studio, in a way we’ve never done before, and with no overdubs. We made the album in only five days, and it turned out to be one of the greatest recording experiences I’ve ever had.”
This is the first time Springsteen has performed with the E Street Band since The River 2016 tour. The music video shows the band working in Springteen’s home studio in New Jersey.

As we wade deeper into the uncertain waters of isolated living, the list of movies and TV shows you haven’t seen already may be starting to dwindle. But fear not, quarantine content consumers — HBO is out with its list of everything new coming to the streaming service in May, and there are lots of fresh options to keep you entertained this month.
Popular movies like “BlacKkKlansman,” “Crazy Rich Asians,” “Jaws” and “School of Rock” are all arriving Friday, May 1. Plus, the director’s cut of “Little Shop of Horrors,” “My Big Fat Greek Wedding” and “The Art of Getting By,” to name a few.
TV shows arriving throughout the month include the premiere of limited series “I Know This Much Is True” starring Mark Ruffalo, out May 10, and the season finale of HBO’s dark comedy “Run” starring Merritt Wever and Domhnall Gleeson, out May 24.

May isn’t quite summer yet but it is usually time that the networks start wrapping up their newest shows and preparing for a relatively fallow summer period. Since HBO isn’t a network, it has no such business model. But May sees the winding down of some HBO blockbusters all the same.
While there are some notable new releases for HBO in May 2020, the bigger story might be the things that are ending. Westworld concludes its third season on May 3 while new series Run wraps up on May 24. Thankfully the film losses in May aren’t too bad for HBO, unless the Agent Cody Banks saga drives a lot of traffic.
The most notable TV premiere in May is I Know This Much is True, a book adaptation starring Mark Ruffalo. This is a very bleak story coming along at a bleak time in history but perhaps those two things will cancel out.

“Ford v Ferrari ” won the top prize, Sound Editing (Effects and Foley), at the Golden Reel Awards bestowed by the Motion Picture Sound Editors (Mpse) on Sunday. One of its Oscar rivals for Best Sound Editing, “1917,” picked up Dialogue & Adr.
“Parasite” continued its winning ways with the guild and claimed the Foreign language prize. “Rocketman” won the musical race, “Jojo Rabbit” nabbed the musical underscore award and “Toy Story” took animation.
Fans of the other three Oscar nominees for Best Sound Editing– “Joker,” “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood” and “Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker” should not be too disheartened. This guild’s track record at predicting the eventual winner at the Academy Awards is spotty. Last year, all five of the Oscar nominees for Best Sound Editing numbered among the Mpse contenders. Eventual Oscar winner “Bohemian Rhapsody” did not contend in the category equivalent — Sound Effects and Foley.

Welcome to the last day of the decade. As we move from 2019 to 2020, it’s time for my annual look at year’s best and brightest. Yes, today I’ll be giving out some personal awards, revealing my top ten list, and basically just putting a final bow on the year. 2019 is about to end, so why don’t we go out with a bang? Let’s get started with the end of the year rundown folks! As always, below you will be able to see both my picks for the very best movies of 2019 as well as the best performances of the year. In terms of the films, I’ll be doing a top 30 list again, with a dozen honorable mentions, just because (I like including as much as possible on these lists…we know this by now). At a time when leaders spout lies and cries of “fake news” put reputable media outlets in doubt, audiences showed an astonishing appetite for nonfiction filmmaking. This year, more than 15 documentaries crossed the $1 million mark in theaters, ranging from high-profile concert films (such as Bruce Springsteen’s “Western Stars” and “Bring the Soul: The Movie”) to powerful human interest stories (“Maiden” and “The Biggest Little Farm”). Revolutionary “The Lord of the Rings” director Peter Jackson pushed the boundaries of the medium yet again, bringing fresh dimension to century-old World War I footage in his 3D doc “They Shall Not Grow Old”, while high-frame-rate eco doc “Aquarela” changed the way we look at water. All told, it was an incredibly strong year for documentaries, amid which Variety film critics Peter Debruge and Owen Gleiberman singled out these 10 as their favorites.

“My soul was not at peace with God.” Edward Norton’s beautifully realized neo-noir, “Motherless Brooklyn,” wrestles with this condition throughout its duration. His hero is an unlikely gumshoe with Tourette’s syndrome, compelled to solve a mystery and avenge a loss, and Norton’s warm, compassionate performance brings the soul to this wonderful film.
He also wrote, produced and directed it and the piece burns with the quiet fire and emotionally all-in stakes of a real auteur passion project. Taylor Swift wasn’t completely absent from the general field as she was a couple of years ago when her “Reputation” was snubbed everywhere except Best Pop Album.
