Untouchables Entertainment is thrilled to unveil the first teaser trailer for Glenn Douglas Packard’s highly anticipated “versus” horror film, The Dark Domain: Mvw Mickey-vs-Winnie. This chilling new addition to the emerging public domain horror sub-genre pits two beloved childhood icons against each other in a monstrous battle for survival. The Dark Domain: Mvw Mickey-vs-Winnie marks the first public domain crossover film.

The chilling new teaser trailer unleashes the first glimpse of the grotesque birth of Dark Mickey and Dark Winnie. The launch of The Dark Domain universe establishes the cursed Hell Forest, introducing terrifying new characters like The Stitcher, Hellshadowers, and The Wickeds. The film was lensed by Andy Patch and special effects makeup was developed by Emmy winner Daniel Phillips.

Since Winnie the Pooh and the earliest versions of Mickey Mouse have lapsed into the public domain, we’ve seen these beloved children’s story characters get twisted around and become the center of multiple horror films – and now we’re going to get what’s being marketed as the first public domain crossover horror film. Beating the upcoming mash-up film Poohniverse: Monsters Assemble out into the world will be The Dark Domain: Mvw Mickey-vs-Winnie, which has just unveiled the teaser trailer that you can watch in the embed above.

This film is meant to launch a cinematic universe called The Dark Domain, which is being overseen by Pitchfork director Glenn Douglas Packard. Exclusive: Scott Adkins and Trace Adkins are joining the Esx Entertainment western Day of Reckoning, which stars Billy Zane, Zach Roerig and Cara Jade Myers. Shaun Silva of TackleBox Films is directing.

The Ali Afshar production follows put-upon lawman John Dorsey (Roerig), who is on the verge of losing his wife and his job as sheriff and posses up with bullish U.S. Marshal Butch Hayden (Zane) to hold outlaw Emily Rouse (Myers) hostage. A battle of wills ensues as Emily turns the posse on themselves, but as her marauding husband and his gang approach, Emily and John realize they will need each other to survive.

Exclusive: Shudder has come aboard Jenn Wexler’s 1970s supernatural horror film The Sacrifice Game, starring Mena Massoud (Aladdin), Olivia Scott Welch (Fear Street), Gus Kenworthy (American Horror Story: 1984) and Chloë Levine (The Oa), which is heading into production next week. AMC Networks’ premium streamer for genre fare now holds all rights to the film in its territories, with Red Sea Media, Inc. having acquired international rights.

Wexler’s second feature following the 2018 horror film The Ranger (which was also distributed by Shudder) is set at a girls’ boarding school over Christmas break, 1971. It centers on Samantha and Clara, two students staying behind for the holidays, who must survive the night against uninvited visitors. Derek Johns (The Wolf and the Lion), Laurent Pitre (Under the Banner of Heaven), Madison Baines (1Up) and newcomer Georgia Acken will round out the cast.

Exclusive: SAG Award winner Iqbal Theba has signed on to star in Land of Gold, a drama from writer-director Nardeep Khurmi, which is currently in production in Oklahoma.

Pic centers on Kiren, a first-generation Punjabi trucker and anxious father-to-be, who stumbles across a 10-year-old undocumented Mexican-American named Elena during a cross-country trip. As Kiren helps her to find her way home, the pair connect over a shared history and evolving expectations of what family truly is.

Theba will play Kiren’s father, Gurinder, who is older than his years, losing his memory and dreaming of better days.

Land of Gold was the winner of the $1 million dollar Grand Prize at the 2021 Tribeca/AT&T Untold Stories pitch competition, and will premiere at the 2022 Tribeca Film Festival, subsequently being distributed by Warner Bros. and HBO Max.

Exclusive: Dennis Quaid has signed on to star in The Hill, a family drama penned by Angelo Pizzo and the late Scott Marshall Smith, who passed away in December.

The film will tell the true story of Rickey Hill, a kid who overcame his physical disability to play professional baseball. Given the complexities Rickey faced in his relationship with his father, his is a story about more than just athletics. It’s also a story about family, and what one young man can do to follow his dream.

Quaid will portray Rickey’s father, Pastor Hill, an instinctively protective man who doesn’t want his son to go out into the world to pursue his dream, fearing that he’ll get ridiculed for his disability. Ultimately, Hill’s tough exterior is broken as Rickey grows up and proves his natural ability.

Jeff Celentano is directing the film, cast by Rick Montgomery (Green Book), which will go before cameras in Georgia in November.

He’s also producing alongside Warren Ostergard, with Matthew Dwyer, Michael Hollingsworth, Michael Blubaugh and Rickey Hill serving as exec producers.

The rest of the film’s cast has not yet been announced.

“I’m setting out to make an iconic film in the classic sense, a beautiful sweeping and powerful inspirational story. One that will stand the test of time like Blindside, Rudy, Field of Dreams and The Natural. Dennis was the first and only person I thought of for the lead role upon reading the script,” said Celentano. “There’s no doubt in my mind that he has the ability to play a loving, caring father while at the same time a staunch, powerful man – all the qualities needed to bring Pastor Hill’s character to life.”

“Since the 1970s in particular, the sports film has gained increasing recognition as one of the most important and popular genres in contemporary cinema,” added Quaid. “I couldn’t be more excited about this project. This film will no doubt further validate the power of American social mobility and show that in America you can choose to be what you want.”

Quaid is an Emmy nominee and two-time Golden Globe nominee best known on the film side for turns in Yours, Mine & Ours, In Good Company, The Day After Tomorrow, Cold Creek Manor, Far from Heaven, The Rookie, Wyatt Earp, Postcards from the Edge and other titles.

The actor’s recent TV credits include Netflix’s Merry Happy Whatever, Amazon’s Goliath and Fortitude, and Crackle’s The Art of More.

He’ll next appear in Alex Ranarivelo’s Born a Champion, Julio Quintana’s Blue Miracle, Andrew and Jon Erwin’s American Underdog: The Kurt Warner Story, Ray Giarratana’s The Tiger Rising, Sean McNamara’s Reagan, in which he’ll play the actor-turned president, and more.

Quaid is represented by UTA, Brillstein Entertainment Partners and Hansen, Jacobson, Teller.

Confirmed at the end of last year, Harrison Ford will return as iconic adventuring archaeologist Indiana Jones one final time in Indiana Jones 5. While we do not yet know who, if anyone, from previous installments in the franchise will appear, one actor who would relish the opportunity is The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles star Sean Patrick Flanery. The actor somewhat unsurprisingly revealed that he would not be able to turn a role if asked, though he would never expect to walk in Ford's shoes.

"Man, I can probably count on one hand the amount of people that wouldn't want to do something that George Lucas originated. Being in a Harrison Ford film, I mean, that falls into that same Dexter category. But having said that, I mean, to me, Harrison Ford is Indiana Jones. You know what I mean? They've got my 20 bucks at the theater every time they put one of those out.

This week offered little new on VOD. Did anticipation of “The Little Things” debuting on HBO Max as well as in theaters make others avoid the week? It left room for two titles to continue flying high with “Tenet” at $5.99, and “News of the World” at $19.99. Like last week, each placed #1 on two of the four charts we track.

Ongoing interest in Christopher Nolan’s film may seem ironic as it was the last major Warners release to see a traditional rollout. The studio reportedly recoups 70 percent of VOD rental; if there were 1 million rentals in a week, at the current price of $5.99, it would generate nearly $4.2 million. That would justify delaying a move to HBO Max.

As a PVOD, Universal sees a more generous revenue share of 80 percent on “News of the World” rentals. For a $4 million return — a nice bounty for a film with a reported $38 million budget...

Little has changed on the VOD charts this week. “News of the World” and “Tenet” still placed #1 on two of the charts we follow, although this week “News” ranked higher overall, placing #2 and #3 elsewhere. “Tenet” is on the lower half of two lists.

“News” at #1 at revenue-based FandangoNow, which has six premium-priced titles leading its list. It’s also the top title at Spectrum Channel, which ranks by transactions, and near the top at Amazon TV and Google Play. That suggests Universal has another breakout success with its strategy of providing three weeks in theaters before PVOD.

“Tenet,” which opened in theaters in September, continues to add revenues at $5.99. “News,” now in its fifth weekend in theaters, was #4 at the box office this weekend with a total of $9.6 million so far. (Netflix bought its international territories.) With a reported budget of $38 million before marketing, the studio may see a decent profit all in.

With the Sundance Film Festival less than a week away (and available to anyone in the U.S. willing to buy tickets to a Covid-safe 2021 virtual edition), late January sees more streaming options than virtually any week since the pandemic began. That doesn’t necessarily mean big movies for home viewers, but at least it offers a raft of new options.

For those seeking diversion with familiar faces, genre movies such as “Brothers by Blood” (featuring Matthias Schoenaerts and Joel Kinnaman), “No Man’s Land” (with George Lopez) and “Born a Champion” (starring Sean Patrick Flanery). Jason Segel plays a family friend who helps a couple (played by Casey Affleck and Dakota Johnson) through the ugliness of cancer in “Our Friend,” based on a true story. If that sounds too serious, try “Psycho Goreman,” in which resourceful low-budget horror director Steven Kostanski makes a deliberately schlocky family film.

Sean Patrick Flanery was raised outside of Houston, Texas. His first role in Hollywood was a Kellog’s Corn Pops commercial starring alongside Paul Walker. In 1992, he landed the title role in George Lucas’ The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles Since then, Flanery has been in numerous films and TV shows, including Powder, SAW3, Suicide Kings, and the runaway cult hit The Boondock Saints. Off camera, Flanery is a high ranking martial artist having earned his black belt in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu from the Renzo Gracie lineage in 2008 and trains regularly when his film schedule allows. In his new film Born A Champion, which he wrote, Flanery plays Mickey Kelley, one of the first American black belts in Brazilian jiu-jitsu, who gets pulled away from everything he loves and into an unsanctioned Mma tournament.

"There is always some theoretical fighter who thinks he can take on the pros." Lionsgate has unveiled an official trailer for a Mma fighter film titled Born a Champion, from French filmmaker Alex Ranarivelo. The film is co-written by and stars actor Sean Patrick Flanery as Mickey Kelly, one of the first American black belts in Brazilian jiu-jitsu. Set in the 1990s, the film follows Mickey as he finds himself pulled into an unsanctioned Mma tournament in the hopes of providing for his family. The full cast also includes Dennis Quaid, Katrina Bowden, Currie Graham, Costas Mandylor, Maurice Compte, Reno Wilson, and Ali Afshar. This has all the usual fight film tropes, and doesn't seem to be unique at all especially with the military subplot, but it does look like Flanery is giving one hell of a performance at least.
