Elisabeth Moss in Invisible Man (2020)

FAQ

Invisible Man

FAQ

    Both.

The Dark Universe, as it was originally planned (a series of films linked via the Prodigium, a secret society dedicated to hunting supernatural threats, run by Doctor Henry Jekyll (Russell Crowe)-the Dark Universe equivalents of the MCU's SHIELD and Nick Fury). Universal deemed the Dark Universe a failure after two bad starts in the form of Dracula Untold (2014) and La Momie (2017) and decided to drop their original plan of creating an interconnected cinematic universe with an overarching storyline and recurring characters.

This doesn't mean, however, that the Dark Universe is canceled. In fact, the success of The Invisible Man may have given the studio an incentive to reboot the universe, similar to what Warner Bros. has done with their DCEU. And since Leigh Whannell is currently working on a Wolfman reboot, it's possible the studio hired him as a creative director to a new, re-envisioned Dark Universe, essentially replacing Alex Kurtzman (producer and director of the 2017 La Momie (2017) reboot), who was originally set to helm the Dark Universe. Of course, this is all speculation.
