This post contains spoilers for the "Paranormal Activity" franchise.
When "Paranormal Activity" was first released in 2007, it was a small-scale, indie found-footage endeavor spearheaded by Oren Peli, shot with an initial budget of around $15,000. After the feature made some waves and was acquired by Paramount, the trajectory of this horror offering, which was initially meant as a standalone entry, changed forever. Now armed with a new alternate ending, "Paranormal Activity" had an unbelievably lucrative run at the box office, and this overwhelming success went on to spawn a highly profitable franchise with stories that sported interconnected timelines and a shared found footage convention. Although the first few entries feel fresh and effective, a case of franchise fatigue can be felt over time, especially with the most recent soft reboot, "Paranormal Activity: Next of Kin."

Despite initial mixed reviews, Land of Bad found fame on Netflix with a star-studded cast. The film's realism comes from real-life Jtac elements and consultant Jason Kinney's influence. The action-packed military thriller Land of Bad pays homage to '90s films with accurate details.
Despite its initial release in February 2024 and less than stellar reviews, William Eubank's Land of Bad found newfound fame when the film made its Netflix debut on July 18, 2024. The action thriller even managed to claim a spot on Netflix's Global Top 10 list during the week spanning July 22 to July 28. The film has a star-studded cast, with Liam Hemsworth and Russell Crowe taking on central roles. The actors are joined by Hemsworth's brother, Luke, alongside Milo Ventimiglia, Ricky Whittle, Chuka Ikogwe, and Daniel MacPherson.
Land of Bad, although another addition to the highly saturated genre of war/military action thrillers, is Eubank's first venture into a purely action-centered film.

There's something about low-to-mid-budget action movies and Netflix that just seem to go very well together. Maybe it's just because action fans are loyal and these movies are often the ones that people don't get a chance to see in theaters. Maybe it's because people are often just looking for something easy enough to half watch in the background while doing other things. Right or wrong, action can be viewed as a better option for that than, say, an Oscar-winning drama. Whatever equation has made it so, Russell Crowe and Liam Hemsworth's "Land of Bad" has found a sizable audience on Netflix as of late.
The action/war flick from director William Eubank, who previously helmed "Paranormal Activity: Next of Kin," has been sitting comfortably in the Netflix Top 10 films chart for the past couple of weeks. As of this writing, it is sitting at number three behind "Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire...

Jennifer Esposito brings a fresh female perspective to the mafia genre in Fresh Kills, in which she stars, writes, produces, and makes her directorial debut. Esposito pulled from her own past growing up in Staten Island in writing the movie, while also putting much of her own life experience into the movie's two main characters. The star is also forever grateful for the Blue Bloods fandom and feels the show coming to an end is a smart choice by the creative team.
Jennifer Esposito is providing a unique and freshly feminine perspective on the mafia genre in Fresh Kills. After steadily building out her filmography with major roles in the early '00s, namely the Oscar-winning crime drama Crash, Esposito has lent her talents to a wide variety of genres throughout her career, including the action-comedy Taxi, the CBS police procedural Blue Bloods and Prime Video's superhero satire hit, The Boys.

Building a sisterly bond was "easy" for Odessa A'zion and Emily Bader heading into Fresh Kills, enhancing their on-screen chemistry. Bader's Rose seeks to break free from her mafia family ties, reflecting on feelings of suffocation and lack of choice. A'zion's Connie, on the other hand, embraces her family loyalty, embodying the fierce protectiveness of a "golden retriever" to her mob boss father.
Odessa A'zion and Emily Bader are sisters who find themselves on diverging paths in Fresh Kills. Having made her acting debut in 2011, A'zion, daughter of iconic comedian Pamela Adlon, recently found success with her leading roles in Hulu's Hellraiser reboot and Prime Video's Sitting in Bars with Cake, as well as a recurring role in CBS' hit American adaptation of Ghosts. Bader is similarly starting to gain ground in leading roles, having led the cast of Paramount+'s Paranormal Activity: Next of Kin, and serving...

A new Paranormal Activity videogame, from the creator of The Mortuary Assistant, has been announced. It should be ready in 2026.
The Paranormal Activity films have been terrorising audiences with their ambient, low-res hauntings for 17 years, and now it’s getting a videogame adaptation from designer Brian Clarke and DarkStone Digital.
Clarke previously made the 2022 horror game The Mortuary Assistant, which quickly went viral thanks to its found-footage-style scares. Interestingly, Clarke was directly inspired by Paranormal Activity when he made the game, so being commissioned to make an official adaptation brings things neatly full-circle.
“The success of the Paranormal Activity franchise epitomises the power and reach of the horror genre,” Clarke said in a statement shared with Gamespot. “If you thought The Mortuary Assistant was scary, we’re taking what we learned during the development of that title and cranking it up with a more reactive and horrifying haunting system. It’s going to be intense!

In late 2011, William Eubank took a job as second unit director of Allen Hughes’ Broken City. Hughes hired Eubank off of early footage from his feature directorial debut, Love (2011), which is a Kubrickian arthouse film that he made in collaboration with Tom DeLonge and his band Angels & Airwaves. The second-unit gig was especially meaningful because it not only landed Eubank his DGA card, but it also marked the beginning of his career-long trajectory with Broken City’s co-lead, Russell Crowe, who’s now leading his action-thriller, Land of Bad.
In 2016, while Crowe was on the promotional trail for Shane Black’s The Nice Guys, Eubank met up with him to discuss his now long-gestating fantasy actioner, World Breaker, however, despite Crowe’s interest at the time, the filmmaker was pulled away when Underwater got the green light from 20th Century Fox. Russell Crowe and Liam Hemsworth star in director William Eubank’s action thriller, Land Of Bad. Here’s an intense, shooty red band trailer.
Russell Crowe arguably gets the cosier end of the deal in the upcoming action thriller, Land Of Bad. While Liam Hemsworth wades through water, gets shot at, and seemingly gets involved in Fight Club-style fisticuffs, Crowe sits in a gamer’s chair and barking advice in an air conditioned military building.
Land Of Bad is the latest film from director William Eubank (who also co-writes with David Frigerio) – a filmmaker who broke through with the low-budget yet ambitious sci-fi Love in 2011. He later made sci-fi thriller The Signal (2014), the actually-pretty-good ocean bottom sci-fi horror Underwater (2020), and chiller sequel Paranormal Activity: Next Of Kin (2021).

Another Russell Crowe and Liam Hemsworth collaboration was not a square on our 2024 pop culture Bingo card, yet it looks like we're about to check it off. Moviegoers are due to see the pair of Aussies team up for the second time in as many years in February's military action thriller "Land of Bad." The pair recently co-starred in the 2022 movie "Poker Face" (no relation to the TV show of the same name), a thriller about a high stakes poker game gone wrong that was directed by Crowe himself.
This time around it's not a card game that goes wrong, but a mission. "Land of Bad" follows a group of military men on an extraction assignment in the Philippines that takes a bloody turn, leaving one young officer at the mercy of the elements and local militia. Fortunately, he's not alone: he's got Russell Crowe's drone pilot droning in his ear,...

Levi Holloway, who wrote the horror-tinged Broadway play Grey House, is on board to pen the stage adaptation, which is described as being in early development.
Created by Oren Peli, who wrote, directed, and shot the initial installment, Paranormal is a horror movie series focused, in most outings, on a family terrorized by a demon. The bulk of them were made between 2009 and 2015. The movies capitalized on the growing proliferation of video and cellphone cameras to tell spooky and jump-scare-filled tales to great effect.

The upcoming action thriller Land of Bad features a star-studded cast including Russell Crowe, and there are some exciting details about the new film. The latest outing from genre auteur director William Eubank, Land of Bad follows an elite extraction team who must go behind enemy lines to rescue top-secret equipment and hostages. Promising to be a thrill-a-minute action extravaganza, Land of Bad features several notable names outside of Crowe including Liam Hemsworth and Milo Ventimiglia. Though the film features state-of-the-art military gadgets, Land of Bad is reminiscent of classic action films from the genre's heyday in the 1980s.
Director and cinematographer William Eubank is no stranger to genre movies and his diverse set of directorial credits includes sci-fi films like 2011's Love and 2014's The Signal, as well as horror films like Paranormal Activity: Next of Kin from 2021. Christopher Landon is the reigning king of the horror-comedy, having directed time-loop chiller “Happy Death Day” (and its underrated follow-up) and “Freaky,” the only body-swapping slasher movie you’ll ever need. His latest, “We Have a Ghost” on Netflix, is his attempt at a more family-friendly hybrid.
The new movie follows a family (led by Anthony Mackie) who move into a house haunted by a schlubby specter (David Harbour). What follows is a wild bouillabaisse of different tones and genres, as it flits through being – at various points and sometimes all at once – a social media satire, a murder mystery and, somehow, a spy thriller.
In some ways, though, “We Have a Ghost” feels like the movie Landon has been working toward his entire career.
Landon has always been interested in the cheeky mixing-and-matching of styles. One of his first sold (and produced) screenplays was for “Disturbia” back in 2007.

A major Paranormal Activity creator is done with the franchise after Paranormal Activity: Next of Kin. The found footage horror franchise focuses on different families as they are haunted by mysterious supernatural demonic creatures. With monsters in every corner, surviving in Paranormal Activity is difficult, especially as the demon Tobi continues to hunt humans across the globe.
Despite the success of the Paranormal Activity franchise, producer Jason Blum says the series should end after Paranormal Activity: Next of Kin. Evidently, he isn't alone. In an interview with IndieWire, a regularly returning Paranormal Activity director, writer, and producer, Christopher Landon, explained that he isn't particularly interested in returning to the franchise at all. Check out his quote below:
“We made one during Covid, and it was one of those things that just kind of happened, and I had no intention of even really being involved because I was like, oh, I’m done with that franchise,...

Paranormal Activity screenwriting stalwart Christopher Landon shared a surprising studio note he got on one of the sequels in the popular horror franchise. The found footage series began with the original 2009 haunted house film, created by filmmaker Oren Peli. It quickly spawned a franchise, which Landon became involved in as a screenwriter starting with 2010's Paranormal Activity 2. He would go on to write the next three films and the most recent outing, 2021's Paranormal Activity: Next of Kin, while also taking the directorial reins for 2014's Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones in addition to his screenwriting duties.
Recently, IndieWire sat down with Landon to discuss his latest directorial outing, the Netflix horror-comedy We Have a Ghost. During the conversation, he discussed his history with the Paranormal Activity franchise and revealed a bizarre studio note he was given while developing one of the sequels. Confirming an unwritten rule of the horror genre,...

After years of churning out sub-par direct-to-video sequels, Hellraiser is getting a high-profile reboot that looks to reinvigorate the franchise. Early reviews have been quite positive, and with a talented director in David Bruckner, perhaps Clive Barker's classic story will have new legs after all.
Looking back at horror reboots of the past, one thing that stands out is just how hard they are to pull off, and the laundry list of poorly received ones surely makes the new Hellraiser look even more impressive. However, some reboots of beloved horror films succeed on their own terms, and Rotten Tomatoes has fans' backs as they rank the best (and worst) ones.

After "Paranormal Activity: Next of Kin," the most recent installment in the long-running horror franchise, many would probably say the series has been done to death. The seventh movie, which was released in October 2021, deviated deeply from the traditions "Paranormal Activity" has cultivated in the found footage genre, as well as the rules it has set for its particular universe over the course of the series. Needless to say, it didn't go over well with critics or fans and was generally panned — and even used as a glaring example as to why the franchise...

Jason Blum owes a lot to the “Paranormal Activity” franchise. The found footage movies helped establish his Blumhouse Productions as a horror movie powerhouse, creating an endlessly profitable formula that has given him the financial freedom to pursue riskier projects. Blum has produced seven “Paranormal Activity” films, from the original in 2007 to 2021’s “Paranormal Activity: Next of Kin.” But the three-time Oscar nominee is not happy with the direction the series has taken.
Speaking to Variety from the Locarno Film Festival, where he is set to receive the Premio Raimondo Rezzonico for Best Independent Producer, Blum did not mince words about the current state of the franchise and his desire to move on from it.
“It has been enough already,” Blum said. “That last ‘Paranormal Activity’ movie was terrible.”

Blumhouse Productions CEO Jason Blum teased the end of the “Paranormal Activity” franchise in Locarno, where he will receive the Premio Raimondo Rezzonico for Best Independent Producer.
“It has been enough already. That last ‘Paranormal Activity’ movie was terrible,” he says. “Paranormal Activity: Next of Kin” premiered in 2021, with another instalment currently eyeing a 2023 release.
“With ‘Halloween,’ we only had the rights to three movies, so we said: ‘Halloween Ends’! It ends for Blumhouse, at least. With other things, you just have this feeling it’s time to put them to bed. It would come back if some director I love, like Scott Derrickson, said: ‘I have a great idea for a ‘Paranormal Activity’ movie. But it’s not something I want to do [at the moment].”
He will reunite with “Halloween” star Jamie Lee Curtis, however, who signed a first-look deal with Blumhouse while helmer David Gordon Green will move onto “The Exorcist.

Starting next Tuesday (Nov. 9), eligible T-Mobile customers can redeem one year of Paramount Plus Essential via this link. After 12 months, the subscription will automatically renew for $4.99 per month (or the then-current price).
The free Paramount Plus offer is on top of the one-year-free promo T-Mobile is running with Apple TV Plus, available to most wireless subscribers. The carrier also bundles Netflix for no extra cost with most Magenta and Magenta Max plans.
ViacomCBS announced the T-Mobile pact as part of releasing Q3 earnings results, netting 4.3 million global streaming subscribers in the period — driven by Paramount Plus — to reach nearly 47 million.

At the movies, I don’t scare easily, but the “Paranormal Activity” films have usually found a way to get under my skin, at least for a few moments. They’ve been coming out since 2007, and in all that time they’ve turned into their own genre, with its own tropes and shivers. But the forces behind the series — led by the independent horror mogul Jason Blum, who “Paranormal Activity” first put on the map —must have realized, around the time of “Paranormal Activity: The Ghost Dimension” (2015), that the series was starting to run on fumes. It had become a fear franchise of diminishing returns (creatively and at the box office), and that’s why “The Ghost Dimension” was presented as the final film in the series.
You knew they couldn’t stick to that. But “Paranormal Activity: Next of Kin,” which is the seventh “Paranormal Activity” film and the first in six years,...

Editor’s note: The following review contains spoilers for “Paranormal Activity: Next of Kin.”
Is it problematic to admit that an overnight stay in an Amish country farmhouse seems ripe for a horror movie setting? Without revealing too much about the plot of “Paranormal Activity: Next of Kin” off the bat, the seventh and latest chapter in the mega-hit horror franchise manages to alleviate that particular stickiness with a last-minute twist. Before the whole devil-worshipping-cult stuff happens, the movie is fairly respectful of Amish cultural practices, even if it uses them as ornamentation.
Keeping in line with previous “Paranormal Activity” entries, “Next of Kin” stays true to its found footage roots with a funny but workable indie documentary premise. The result is . Like most studio horror movies these days, it looks a lot better than it should, and slaps a bit less.
“Next of Kin” centers on a young woman...
