Initially premiering on Cartoon Network in the late 2010s, Craig of the Creek is a fan-favorite animated series that has now spawned its own prequel film, Craig Before the Creek. Craig of the Creek thrives as a short-form series with 11-minute-long segments, but as a feature film, the cute characters and calming animation style are not enough to warrant the 90-minute runtime. The plot strives to be grand, initially drawing viewers in but eventually reveals that it doesn't have much to say. For young fans of the series, this film may be a fun explanation of how Craig found the kid utopia by the creek, but for older audiences, Craig Before the Creek may prove to be a bit of a bore.
Craig Before the Creek depicts the title character moving to Herkleton, where the series takes place. Feeling sad about leaving his friends from his old town behind, Craig,...

Exclusive: UTA on Tuesday announced its signing of Rebecca Sugar and Ian Jones-Quartey, a pair of award-winning multi-hyphenates active within the field of animation, for representation in all areas.
An animator, director, screenwriter, executive producer, and songwriter, Sugar is best known for creating Steven Universe, the acclaimed animated series that ran for five seasons from 2013-2019, securing GLAAD and Peabody Awards, as well as numerous Emmy and Annie Award nominations. Prior to their time on the Cartoon Network show, which also spawned a TV movie and offshoot limited series, they served as a writer, storyboard artist and songwriter on the hit fantasy animated series Adventure Time for the same channel.
Since 2010, Sugar has been devoted to the fight for Lgbtqia+ content in children’s media, and for a more inclusive environment, both on screen and behind the scenes, in the animation industry. After writing over 60 songs for animation, she released her first personal album,...

The revival of Steven Universe is promising, as the show has been revived before with a movie and miniseries. Fans didn't get enough time with an older, more mature Steven, leaving possibilities for a revival. Bringing back Steven Universe may tarnish the show's final reputation and struggle to manufacture conflict without any remaining villains.
The possibilities for the revival of Rebecca Sugar's hit show Steven Universe have many implications, both good and bad. Originally coming to a conclusion with the release of the 5th season in 2017, the staple icon of modern-day Cartoon Network has had a profound impact on the animation landscape. Its sophisticated musical offerings, signature "CalArts" animation style, and bold representation of the LGBTQ+ community has given the series lasting staying power as one of the few great defininitive Cartoon Network series of the 2010s.

Creator Rebecca Sugar opened up about a possible Steven Universe revival.
In an interview with Variety, Sugar reflected on the 10th anniversary of Steven Universe, which ran for five seasons on Cartoon Network. Sugar revealed that she would bring back the series if there is enough public demand. “I would really, really appreciate it if everyone who would be interested in something like that would make a ton of noise and make it really known -- because I would be thrilled to explore that. I think in this current media landscape, if there’s a huge amount of public demand, then that is something that becomes impossible to ignore. I love these characters and I love this world, and I would love to return to it. And I hope, if everyone else feels the same as I do, I may have an opportunity to do something like that.” Sugar didn't...

The 2019 television film Steven Universe: The Movie won’t be streaming on Warner Bros.’ Max for very much longer.
Steven Universe became immensely popular during its five-season run on Cartoon Network, garnering for its storyline, characters, and especially its LGBTQ+ representation. And despite its status as a “kids’ show,” it had undeniable crossover appeal as many older demographics took notice.
Steven Universe: The Movie, which is set two years after the show’s finale, aired on Cartoon Network and was put on Max (then HBO Max) roughly a year following its debut.

The show is still just as clever, funny, and heartwarming as before, but now, the problems appear to be emerging more from Steven this time around, who is afraid of change and of feeling unneeded. In his existential crisis, he keeps taking it out on the people around him. As there are only 10 episodes so far, it remains to be seen what else will happen, but these episodes are a great start and here's how they stack up.

The title character of Steven Universe is an adolescent boy who, over the course of the Cartoon Network series’ first five seasons, developed the ability to fly, to conjure an impenetrable pink shield out of thin air, to use his saliva to heal injuries short of death (and sometimes beyond), to merge his body with a friend’s (in an act called fusion) so they can become even stronger as one than they are side-by-side, and more. For six years now, Cartoon Network’s “Steven Universe” has been pumping out story after graceful story about the power of love, friendship, cooperation, self-acceptance and trust. Creator Rebecca Sugar, who previously worked on the network’s equally surreal “Adventure Time,” has created and honed an animated galaxy unlike any other, overflowing with distinct characters and complex mythology that sets it apart. So while the show might have started as the simple adventures of a boy and his alien guardians (aka “The Crystal Gems”) navigating what it means to live on Earth, “Steven Universe” has since served up some of TV’s most thoughtful meditations on what it means to be a good and compassionate person — or alien, or half-human/half-alien, or whatever it is that makes your individual atoms so special.
