Uzo Aduba is set to give this year’s commencement address at Chapman University’s Dodge College of Film and Media Arts. The three-time Orange Is the New Black Emmy winner will deliver her speech May 18 at the school’s Wilson Field in Orange, CA.

“Uzo Aduba is one of the exceptional talents of our time,” said Stephen Galloway, dean of Dodge College. “She represents everything we most cherish at Dodge College: a fierce intelligence, originality and the highest commitment to excellence.”

Aduba played inmate “Crazy Eyes” Warren on all seven seasons of Netflix’s Orange Is the New Black, scoring Supporting Actress Emmys in 2024, 2015 and 2017, two individual SAG Awards and two SAG prizes for Comedy Ensemble. Aduba also picked up Emmy noms for HBO’s In Treatment reboot in 2021 and Hulu’s Mrs. America in 2020 and is a five-time Ncaap Image Award nominee.

Initially premiering on Cartoon Network in the late 2010s, Craig of the Creek is a fan-favorite animated series that has now spawned its own prequel film, Craig Before the Creek. Craig of the Creek thrives as a short-form series with 11-minute-long segments, but as a feature film, the cute characters and calming animation style are not enough to warrant the 90-minute runtime. The plot strives to be grand, initially drawing viewers in but eventually reveals that it doesn't have much to say. For young fans of the series, this film may be a fun explanation of how Craig found the kid utopia by the creek, but for older audiences, Craig Before the Creek may prove to be a bit of a bore.

Exclusive: UTA on Tuesday announced its signing of Rebecca Sugar and Ian Jones-Quartey, a pair of award-winning multi-hyphenates active within the field of animation, for representation in all areas.

An animator, director, screenwriter, executive producer, and songwriter, Sugar is best known for creating Steven Universe, the acclaimed animated series that ran for five seasons from 2013-2019, securing GLAAD and Peabody Awards, as well as numerous Emmy and Annie Award nominations. Prior to their time on the Cartoon Network show, which also spawned a TV movie and offshoot limited series, they served as a writer, storyboard artist and songwriter on the hit fantasy animated series Adventure Time for the same channel.

Steven Universe became immensely popular during its five-season run on Cartoon Network, garnering for its storyline, characters, and especially its LGBTQ+ representation. And despite its status as a “kids’ show,” it had undeniable crossover appeal as many older demographics took notice.

Steven Universe: The Movie, which is set two years after the show’s finale, aired on Cartoon Network and was put on Max (then HBO Max) roughly a year following its debut.

Steven Universe: The Movie was a wild ride from start to finish and has left fans talking long after it first aired. We certainly had a lot to say about it. For those wanting a deeper dive into the Steven Universe film, you're in luck! “I Lost My Body,” the curious story of a disembodied hand searching to reunite with its body, won the grand prize at the Animation is Film Festival, held Oct. 18-20 in Los Angeles. The audience prize was split between two films, Makoto Shinkai’s “Weathering With You” and “The Swallows of Kabul” by Zabou Breitman and Elea Gobbe-Mevellec.

Netflix acquired the worldwide rights to “I Lost My Body,” directed by Jérémy Clapin, after the film premiered at the Cannes Film Festival in May. The French film — which bested its live-action competition to win the top prize in Critics’ Week at Cannes — screened in its original language at Animation Is Film. Netflix has also prepared an English dub featuring the voices of Dev Patel, Alia Shawkat and George Wendt, which will be available to Netflix subscribers on Nov. 29, two weeks after the French version receives its Oscar-qualifying run on Nov. 15.

Thanks to “The Lion King” star Donald Glover, Chance the Rapper’s “nostalgia consultant” gig on the Disney film turned into some voice acting work. Chance grew up obsessively watching the 1994 original animated movie and Glover, who voices Simba in this year’s remake, knew that.

Glover “contacted me while they were working on it,” Chance said on “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon” Tuesday. “He said, ‘I told Jon Favreau, the director, that you were a huge fan and he wants you to come in as a kind of nostalgia consultant to tell them what ’90s kids like about ‘Lion King.””
