It doesn't take a lot for audiences to turn against a movie or television show. It's more common for folks to watch things from the comfort of their own home, as opposed to heading all the way to the theater and paying ridiculous prices for tickets and snacks, so the barrier between staying engaged and turning something off is more fragile than ever.
It's even more apparent nowadays when viewers end up soured on a popular series or franchise just from the sheer terribleness of one scene. It may seem like an exaggeration to say one scene can completely ruin an entire project for most people, but it's usually how we end up with the most disappointing movies of a given year. With all the content available at the click of a button, viewers don't want to waste their time with things that fall below expectations.

Melisandre wasn’t just some side character in Game of Thrones; she was dropping prophecies, setting people on fire, and making us question everything (literally!) But if there’s one moment that had us absolutely fuming, it’s that scene. The one we still refuse to forgive.

The DVD releases of Peter Jackson's The Lord of the Rings films included commentary tracks both by the screenwriters and by the stars of the trilogy. The most chilling elements of Game of Thrones are the White Walkers. They captured fans’ attention immediately with their silent menace and icy, undead bodies. However, many believe that the show’s rushed treatment of these supernatural creatures in the final seasons squandered their potential.

A fascinating fan theory suggests that the White Walkers were not mere harbingers of death but intelligent beings with a calculated purpose, one that extended beyond simple destruction.
Unfortunately, the abrupt conclusion of their arc in a single battle episode during the final season left fans yearning for a deeper exploration of their motives.

Following several characters throughout the world of Westeros, HBO's Game of Thrones covered the deceits and plots of the various Houses as they each vied for a spot on the Iron Throne—but not without its fair share of gaffes. Since the show's premiere and maligned final season, Game of Thrones has been subject to even more scrutiny.
Like any long-running show, Game of Thrones has made its share of on-set mistakes and continuity errors. Considering an entire season was filmed in only nine months, it's unsurprising that small things were missed on set. Nevertheless, when viewers spot everything from accidental costume changes to out-of-place items caught in the shot, it dampens the immersion.
Updated on January 29, 2025, by Christopher Raley: As Game of Thrones-related content continues with HBO's House of the Dragon fans will no doubt be checking in on the old series to remind themselves of key events and characters.

Upon its debut in 2011, Game of Thrones quickly became one of the most beloved television series, backed by countless memorable scenes and characters. The phenomenal writing, incredible cast, and epic settings made it a show unlike any other, and it is no exaggeration to say that it was the birth of a generation-defining franchise. However, part of what made Game of Thrones so distinct from other TV shows was that it didn't shy away from material that was difficult to watch.
However, as a byproduct of its willingness to push the boundaries, some parts of the series became controversial for viewers. Be it plot twists that were so heartbreaking they left fans emotionally devastated or lazy plot developments that left fans infuriated, there are plenty of controversial moments in Game of Thrones' history. Despite the overwhelming hype the show gets, it's always been one thing: polarizing.

Silo wrapped its second season on Apple TV+ last week, and it left us with a whole lot of questions. Over the course of its second season, the science fiction series starring Rebecca Ferguson gradually peeled back more and more layers; by the end, we were just starting to learn more about the people who are pulling the strings on the entire silo project. The rest of those details await in season 3, which will dive into material from Shift, the second book in Hugh Howey's book trilogy.
Silo gave us a pretty wild glimpse of what's to come at the end of season 2, with a flashback into the distant past featuring a freshman congressman named Donald (Ashley Zukerman) and a reporter named Helen (Jessica Henwick). They were meeting in a bar in Washington D.C., which is the first time we've ever truly gotten a glimpse at the world...

Silo fans were stoked to learn the TV show will fully adapt the novels (now that Season 4 has been confirmed). Series creator Graham Yost confirmed at least one surprise waiting for audiences when Season 3 premieres.
Silo creator Graham Yost says Season 3 will be brighter, but he's not referring to a shift in the show's plot. Fans criticize the show's aesthetic; most of Silo's scenes take place in confined spaces (up until Season 2 at least), filmed using artificial lighting and indoor sets. "Listen, I'm not going to defend it. It's just the way it plays. And sometimes stuff looks one way in a dark editing room," he told TV Line. "When we showed the first episode on a big screen in London, it looked fantastic, because motion picture screens are very bright. So I just encourage everyone to crank up the brightness [at home], and you'll see a difference."

Despite HBO's most popular series, Game of Thrones, airing its final episode back in 2019, the network is nowhere near finished creating new stories that take place in George R.R. Martin's epic fantasy world. Currently, fans impatiently await season three of the first of many spin-offs, House of the Dragon. However, few know that a prequel series called Bloodmoon was originally supposed to air in its place — costing HBO a whopping $30 million for its failed pilot.
Bloodmoon would have brought viewers thousands of years into the past to likely explore the events of The Long Night, provide more context for the controversial eighth season of Game of Thrones, and present the origins of House Lannister and Casterly Rock. With showrunner and writer Jane Goldman, most known for fan-favorite Kingsman: The Secret Service, Madame Web director S.J. Part of what makes Game of Thrones so appealing is that even its villains are complex enough to maintain the audience's interest, rather than being one-dimensional tropes. In some cases, the antagonists are even cheered on when pitted against another villain. Over the course of eight seasons, fans witness the best and worst that Westeros offers, ranging from corrupt knights to conniving politicians and everything in between.
However, because so many villains appear in Game of Thrones, it's difficult to assert which one is the franchise's best. While there are obvious answers, such as the White Walkers and the terrifying Night King, they are more of an existential threat than human characters. The series' best villains are the ones that fans love to hate, and they are often defined by their moral complexity, memorable actions, and evil motivations. And the Night King.

New Game of Thrones art images Daenerys as the savior of humanity. In 2022, Game of Thrones received its first spin-off in the form of House of the Dragon. Several more are in development, including A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, Ten Thousand Ships, and a project concerning Aegon's Conquest. For all of HBO's efforts, however, the company has been unable to fix the original controversial finale that led audiences to lash out at the franchise. Consequently, most of the spin-offs have been prequels, rather than sequels or parallel stories.
New art created by Reddit user Nomi_DBS attempts to showcase Daenerys living up to audience expectations. Check out the art below, which is a stunning collage that sees Daenerys facing off against the Night King:

HBO head Casey Bloys revealed how far along the recently announced Game of Thrones movie is. Throughout its run on HBO, Game of Thrones became one of the most popular shows in the world. Ever since its conclusion in 2019, HBO and Warner Bros. have attempted to expand the franchise with spinoff shows like House of the Dragon and the upcoming A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms. Now, Warner Bros. is eager to bring the world of Westeros to the big screen.
As reported by Entertainment Weekly, Bloys recently spoke about the Game Thrones movie at a 2025 preview event. While he is excited about a potential Game of Thrones movie, Bloys stresses that they are still very early in the process, and they'll have to see how good the idea is once it's further developed. Talisa Stark (Oona Chaplin) is a show-only character in Game of Thrones and I think she is one of the notable improvements the HBO series makes over George R. R. Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire books. It can be hard for the dedicated Game of Thrones fanbase to think back on the series with any sort of objectivity. One of the most disappointing TV experiences of my life was driving 20 minutes to a watch party for Game of Thrones season 8, episode 3, "The Long Night" and seeing arguably one of the most nonsensical episodes of television I'd ever watched.
But let's get past that, because there are seasons and episodes of Game of Thrones that surpass anything on television save those of the most hallowed moments of prestige TV. David Benioff and D. B. Weiss may be hated names now, but it's unfair to deny that they made...

Game of Thrones could be making its way to the big screen, with a movie in development at Warner Bros. But does that mean that there will actually be a direct continuation of the show, with members of Game of Thrones' cast returning? Right now, the plan is only in the earliest stages, with no director, writer, or actors attached, which means, in theory, it could be anything. However, while there are plenty of stories to pull from, only a few would make sense - or rather, be big enough - as a theatrical release.
That could be something like Robert's Rebellion or Aegon's Conquest, but it's not hard to imagine picking up after Game of Thrones' ending, as divisive as it was, would be attractive to WB. It would be somewhat of a surprise, but this is a world where there's a new Lord of the Rings movie set...

The clocks have gone back. Winter is coming. And that can only mean one thing. No, not Christmas — news from Westeros, of course! With prequel series House Of The Dragon proving a hit with fans and critics alike (even if not always Thrones author George R. R. Martin), and spin-off show A Knight Of The Seven Kingdoms well on its way, stock in Game Of Thrones — five years after HBO's eight season fantasy epic concluded — has scarcely been higher. And now, as THR are reporting, it looks like A Song Of Ice And Fire may be about to be sung on the big screen at long last.

House of the Dragon Almost Got Shelved—Here’s Why That Nearly-Disaster Led to Its Success! (Photo Credit – Instagram)
Believe it or not, House of the Dragon almost failed. HBO was ready to cancel the Game of Thrones prequel before it started. Crazy, huh? The show is killing it today because of that near-miss.
HBO has many Game of Thrones spinoffs in the pipeline, but only sometimes. After Game of Thrones finished in 2019, the network took its time—maybe too long—releasing new content. They even spent $30 million on a prequel pilot called Blood Moon about the Long Night to cancel it. Talk about brutal.
But it wasn’t just Bloodmoon that faced the axe. According to co-showrunner Ryan Condal, House of the Dragon was also close to being shelved. Condal revealed, “HBO was going to shelve it” until George R.R. Martin stepped in. This was the story Martin wanted to tell most,...

"Game of Thrones" had its share of recastings -- they were inevitable with a production and an ensemble as sprawling as the show had. The series had two Daario Naharises (Ed Skrein and then Michiel Huisman) and three Gregor Cleganes. After season 2, "Game of Thrones" also recast both of the younger Lannister-Baratheon siblings, Myrcella (Aimée Richardson and then future "First Omen" star Nell Tiger Free) and King Tommen (Callum Wharry and Dean Charles Chapman). Even Daenerys Targaryen was played by Tamzin Merchant, not Emilia Clarke, in the unaired (and then remade) "Game of Thrones" pilot.
One "Game of Thrones" recasting might have slipped your notice, though, because both successive actors were buried beneath make-up. That recasting would be the Night King, leader of the undead White Walkers. In seasons 4 and 5, the Night King was played by Welsh actor Richard Brake; you might recognize him as Joe Chill (murderer of Bruce Wayne's parents) from "Batman Begins,...

It is difficult to deny that the final season of Game of Thrones was disastrous. The franchise had already been declining before season 8 began, but the ending proved to be a complete dud. With just six episodes to wrap up a world-spanning story, it failed to conclude any of its arcs satisfactorily. Daenerys Targaryen, Jon Snow, Arya Stark, and countless other characters never received a fitting or well-developed finale.
A common argument for the show's flawed ending ties directly to the fact that author George R. R. Martin has not completed the books that inspired the show. Creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss were left with nothing more than bullet points to craft the conclusion to an incredibly complex story. It is easy to see how anyone could have failed, considering that even Martin has not been able to finish the story. Still, the reality is that the show planted...

Bran Stark becoming king was one of the most controversial parts of Game of Thrones' series finale, "The Iron Throne," but the show did miss a golden opportunity to better set it up. After years of speculation about who would claim the Iron Throne, Game of Thrones' ending provided a big shock when not only was said throne destroyed, but then Bran was made king. The likes of Jon Snow and Daenerys Targaryen were much more common theories, and even in terms of outside bets, Bran hadn't really been in consideration.
There is some logic to the idea, insofar as Bran is a character who doesn't want power and, as the new Three-Eyed Raven, can see the past and learn from its mistakes. However, it also could have been better set up: Isaac Hempstead Wright being missing from Game of Thrones' cast back in season 5 certainly didn't help, but season...

Long before she was a star thanks to The Last of Us, Bella Ramsey's Game of Thrones role as Lyanna Mormont made her a standout in the show's massive ensemble. Running from 2011 to 2019, Game of Thrones is an epic fantasy series that boasts an enormous ensemble cast. Actors like Emilia Clarke, Kit Harington, and Peter Dinklage gained prominence, with the latter winning four Emmys for his role as Tyrion Lannister. The 71st Primetime Emmys were held at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles on September 22nd, 2019. While it was a big night for shows like “Game of Thrones,” “Fleabag,” and “Chernobyl” in their respective genre fields, there were a fair amount of surprises that the Gold Derby odds didn’t predict. Perhaps the biggest shock of the night was Jason Bateman winning Best Drama Directing for “Ozark’s” season two premiere, “Reparations.” How was he able to overcome his sixth place odds and win his first Emmy for directing?
When the nominations were announced on July 16th, 2019, “Game of Thrones” led the drama field with 32 bids for its eighth and final season. It was followed by “Better Call Saul,” “Killing Eve,” “Ozark” and “This Is Us,” all earning 9 noms each. “Game of Thrones” was touted to handily win its fourth Drama Series Emmy as well as its third for directing.

Warning: Contains Spoilers for Fire & Blood, the book on which House of the Dragon is based.
One wild theory spinning out of House of the Dragon claims Daemon Targaryen is the Night King, but Game of Thrones already debunked this. The theory that Daemon is the Night King has been around for a couple of years, going back to similarities in their costumes and uncertainty surrounding what happens to Daemon in George R.R. Martin's Fire & Blood. However, it really gained traction with House of the Dragon season 2's ending.
In the finale, Daemon had a vision of a White Walker with blonde, Targaryen-like hair, which was read as teasing his future. In the book, Daemon dies fighting his nephew, Aemond Targaryen, but his body is never found, leading to speculation he actually survived. This is combined with theories about the Night King being a Targaryen, mostly thanks to him...

The good news is that Cynthia Rothrock has a new film, Lady Scorpions. The bad news is that it’s from Tiger Style Media, the same production company that gave us the underwhelming Art of Eight Limbs and The Lockdown. The good news for you is that I’m willing to risk taking a bullet, or a kick to the head, to tell you if the third time is a charm for them.

One of the hard-earned truths of Game of Thrones is its sudden and shocking tragedies that not only catch the viewers unaware but leave them shaken for weeks after. But despite placing no value on a hero’s life and killing off fan-favorite characters without hesitation, such bold strokes on the creators’ part only invited more frenzied fanatics to the show instead of putting them off.

Based on George R.R. Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire series of fantasy novels, Game of Thrones was a breakthrough for HBO. Debuting in 2011, It straddled multiple eras of its network’s ownership and technology.
The series showed that massive audiences would respond to fantasy series with dense mythologies. It also included a massive number of characters and place names.
And even though the series eventually got beyond Martin’s published books, many fans were dissatisfied with how the series ended. But Game of Thrones remains mostly well-remembered.

As with most popular franchises in the present day, the overseers of what is now Warner Bros. Discovery have sought to extend the franchise in additional directions and indefinitely into the future.

Game of Thrones becomes the victim of Family Guy’s wrath.
Family Guy has been running since 1999 and throughout the years, the animated series has made it its business to joke about celebrities and pop culture in the most brutal way possible. Whether it’s Stewie and Brian’s visit to the fuzzy world of Disney or Indiana Jones’ adventures, Family Guy sure knows how to make its audience double over with laughter with meta-commentary.

Another even-numbered year, another season of HBO’s “Game of Thrones” spinoff series “House of the Dragon.” While the Season 2 finale did answer some of the audience’s big questions like “will Rhaena have a staring contest with the big Vale dragon” (yes) and “will Corlys beat the accusations of being a deadbeat dad” (no), it also contained some scenes that require a little more explanation to make sense.
One of those scenes is Daemon’s (Matt Smith) weirwood vision in the godswood at Harrenhal, the culmination of an arc that saw the King Consort tripping Harren-balls for five straight episodes. Though this vision formally ties the events of “House of the Dragon” to “Game of Thrones,” the significance doesn’t stop there. Here’s the real meaning of Daemon’s vision from the “House of the Dragon” Season 2 finale.
What happened when Daemon touched the weirwood?
You asked; let’s go.

This article contains spoilers for House of the Dragon season 2 episode 8 and details from the novel Fire & Blood.
It’s been a long, strange journey for Daemon Targaryen (Matt Smith) on House of the Dragon season 2.
After falling out with his niece/wife Rhaenyra in episode 2, The Rogue Prince has spent his days in the haunted castle Harrenhal, ostensibly trying to raise a Riverlands army but really being haunted by ghosts of Christmas past. In the season 2 finale, however, Daemon’s remembrances from long ago are replaced with dark visions of the future.
Assisted by the witchy Alys Rivers (Gayle Rankin), Daemon accesses Westeros’ network of weirwood trees to glimpse into the days to come. What he sees spooks him enough to immediately declare his fealty to Rhaenyra on her arrival, rather than continuing his silly game of pursuing the crown for his own.

"House of the Dragon" has really surpassed all expectations for what a prequel to a beloved (then very hated) TV show can be, carrying over all the good political intrigue and backstabbing from "Game of Thrones," while also finding the time to give us truly weird and bizarre subplots like Daemon going through his own version of "Luigi's Mansion" at Harrenhal.
Of course, the raison d'être for "House of the Dragon" is being able to see a time when the titular dragons ruled the skies and went into battle relatively constantly. So far, the show has delivered on the promise of absolute mayhem and seeing hellfire falling from the sky in the medieval equivalent of nuclear warfare. As the war between Team Black and Team Green rages on, and new dragon riders come into play, it's time to recap every dragon...

House of the Dragon season 2, episode 4 delivers a stunning dragon vs. dragon battle, making up for Game of Thrones' underwhelming Battle of Winterfell. It's been said that when you play the game of thrones, you win or you die. Few Game of Thrones characters are strong enough to survive until the end, but a handful of warriors, nobles, or creatures of legend have unspeakable power in their favor. They come from all corners of George R.R. Martin's dark fantasy world, and they all have one thing in common: they've survived through sheer strength. While it's important to note that the strongest Game of Thrones characters have each exhibited strength in all its forms, the focus is on characters who rely on physical strength and skills to dominate the world around them.
While Daenerys Targaryen and Tywin Lannister are among the most powerful characters to ever step foot in Westeros, their strategic thinking and intellectual ability would not save them in hand-to-hand combat. For the sake of fairness, the strength of these Game of Thrones...

Game of Thrones season 8, episode 5, "The Bells" is divisive, but reflects complex themes of power and war in George R.R. Martin's books. "The Bells" received strong backlash for Daenerys' villain turn, as she used Drogon to burn King's Landing to the ground. Despite mixed opinions, "The Bells" effectively showcases the horrors of war and the moral ambiguity of characters in Game of Thrones.

The early 2010s are often hailed as a modern golden age of television where TV episodic content was constantly reaching new heights of cinematic brilliance. One of the vanguards of this movement was undoubtedly Game of Thrones, which became one of the most watched and critically acclaimed shows throughout its eight seasons.

George R.R. Martin's The Winds of Winter can fix a plot hole regarding the Night King from Game of Thrones season 8. The Night King was immune to dragonfire, but Game of Thrones never explained how or why this was the case. The Night King doesn't exist in the books, but Martin's richer, deeper worldbuilding and attention to detail can still explain the plot hole.
The Winds of Winter has the chance to put right or explain one confusing part of Game of Thrones season 8. George R.R. Bloodmoon had the potential to be just as stunning as Game of Thrones, judging by the detailed costumes and set design seen in the BTS images of Naomi Watts. New behind-the-scenes images reveal Naomi Watts' character from the scrapped Game of Thrones prequel, Bloodmoon. The unaired pilot intended to introduce viewers to Westeros during the Age of Heroes was ultimately passed on by HBO. Watts' character, described as a charismatic socialite with a dark secret, may have had a connection to House Lannister and the figure, Lann the Clever.
New behind-the-scenes images have revealed a look at Naomi Watts' character from the scrapped Game of Thrones prequel developed under the working title Bloodmoon. Taking the form of an unaired pilot that was commissioned by HBO in 2018, Bloodmoon would have served to introduce viewers to Westeros during the Age of Heroes, an era set roughly 10,000 years before the birth of Daenerys Targaryen. While the show’s pilot episode was completed, HBO ultimately decided to pass on the project and directed their attention toward developing House of the Dragon instead.

With ten movies and five episodes of TV shows to his credit for 2023, Dermot Mulroney seems to be vying to fill the gap left by the retirement of Bruce Willis. Ruthless proves he’s already mastered sleepwalking through a film every bit as well as he could. Sadly, he won’t be the only one sleeping as this film manages to make human trafficking deadly, deadly dull, that is.
Harry just wanted to go watch a movie. But he ends up telling off some kid who isn’t listening when his date says no. That, of course, leads to the kid pulling a knife on him in the parking lot. That’s not a good idea because Harry is a man...

Due Justice is the latest film in the never-ending line of Taken wannabes where a former badass has to go back into action to rescue their kidnapped daughter. In this case, it’s Max an attorney who, along with his boss Claire are lawyers celebrating winning their latest case when Max hears a familiar voice from across the restaurant.
It’s his brother Jerry who isn’t happy to see him, probably due to the company he’s dining with. As it turns out, Jerry was undercover for the FBI and that meeting triggered the suspicion of Ellis, Roxy and their crew. It’s not long before both Jerry and Max’s wife are dead, and his daughter abducted while he’s at the office working late.
