Over the last two years Duncan has seen and tried it all; moulding himself into what he thinks is the perfect boyfriend, pretending not to care about ex-boyfriends that havenÂ’t quite disappeared and letting go of his British reserve in the hope of becoming more appealing. HeÂ’s disastrously attempted to give fashion advice, put up with reckless driving and created a secret language. HeÂ’s even had the courage to take the ultimate risk, saying the three little wordsÂ…No matter what he tried, Duncan always ended up aloneÂ…but thatÂ’s all about to change.

Duncan: I had planned the perfect weekend: a first-class trip to Paris; our own chauffeur on standby for three days; an executive suite in a five-star hotel with comforts and amenities you couldn't possibly imagine, it even had a balcony with stunning views across the city. I pulled every string I could to get a window seat at a three-star Michelin restaurant. I somehow managed to get two tickets to her favourite opera. I even bought a twilight trip down the Seine with music, champagne, the works!... And you know what? The minute we arrived I knew it was going to be a fucking disaster.

The opening credits are the whole film rewinding backwards from Duncan's suicide, back to him meeting girlfriend No. 1, Wendy.

Don't bother if you are not British - you won't get it

I think this film may not cross water - the Americans won't get the humour, and the Europeans will be wondering why we have to work so hard to get in to bed with each other (its why there are so many drunk British people in Spain, we can't do it sober).

There are two aspects of the film which bring it to the top of the pile - the script and the cinematography. The script is not just tight and well-timed; its storyline is a fairly accurate, almost forensic, depiction of why we keep screwing up in relationships (that's a British 'we' of course). The imagery is fantastic, a clever mix of interesting/beautiful angles and variously styled animated sequences.

The acting is good but not great, but perhaps that was an implicit theme within the film...very clever.
