“When you play the game of thrones, you win or you die.” And if you’re a fan of HBO’s iconic fantasy series, you know just how true that was! With characters dropping like flies, the show introduced an unforgettable cast over its eight-season run. Premiering in 2011, Game of Thrones redefined television with its gripping storytelling, breathtaking battles, and jaw-dropping betrayals.
Back then, many of its stars were either rising newcomers—like Emilia Clarke, Kit Harington, Sophie Turner, and Maisie Williams—or established actors who found even greater fame, including Peter Dinklage, Lena Headey, and Sean Bean.
Some, like Clarke and Harington, have kept the fantasy spirit alive with new projects, while Turner and Williams have explored bold, unconventional roles. Meanwhile, Dinklage continues to prove his versatility, and Headey has taken on exciting new challenges. Whether ruling new realms on-screen or making waves in Hollywood, the Game of Thrones...

Martyn Ford has broken into the mainstream like the Kool-Aid Man bursting through a wall. The actor, with the musculature of a bodybuilder and the cadence of a confident Englishman, has gone from social media workouts to starring in blockbusters and streaming series (The Sandman and Those About to Die). He's now playing the legendary giant Goliath in Prime Video's new series, House of David, and will be playing an equally formidable villain in the upcoming remake of Red Sonja. In an interview with MovieWeb, Ford told us that his mysterious character in that movie, General Karlak, is set to be visually "phenomenal," so once can imagine Ford's already intimidating physique combined with wild CGI.
Ford has been great at multifaceted but terrifying villains, and compared Red Sonja's Karlak (a villain of the future) to Goliath. "I think there's always similarities between the ultimate bad guys and their mannerisms and their energies.

Hannah Blyth, head of TV licensing at the U.K. arm of Amazon’s Prime Video, underscored the desire to have “a broad and well-rounded slate” when speaking Wednesday at TV event Mip London.
As well as male and older viewer skewing titles such as “Clarkson’s Farm” and “Reacher,” Blyth said that Prime Video also had secured shows that would appeal to a female and younger crowd.
One example, she said, is “Molly-Mae: Behind It All,” a docu-series that follows the life of British social media influencer Molly-Mae Hague as she deals with her break-up with the boxer Tommy Fury. “It really drove a lot of acquisition of younger female audiences, and the show is very much designed for them specifically,” she said.

We recently sat down with House of David's leads, newcomer Michael Iskander and actor Martyn Ford to discuss their roles as David and Goliath.

Exclusive: Germany’s Flute Film will operate as Flimmer going forwards, after Christopher Zwickler reacquired rights to the Flimmer brand. Roland Emmerich and Marco Kreuzpaintner, who co-founded Flimmer with Zwickler, have joined its advisory board.

The tale of David vs. Goliath is one of the most popular and inspiring stories in anthropological history (originating in the Christian Bible), but you've never seen it told like this. The ultimate underdog story should need little introduction, as David, a small shepherd from the Valley of Elah, Israel, took down the mighty, bronze-armor adorned giant, using nothing but a slingshot — spoiler alert. The story has been told, and re-told countless times. But, a new Prime Video series is adding a flare of drama, and appears to be heavily inspired by HBO's Game of Thrones.
House of David has transformed the biblical story into an eight-episode series. The series was created by Jon Erwin (Jesus Revolution & American Underdog) and Jon Gunn (Ordinary Angels), based on an idea by Erwin and The Chosen creator, Dallas Jenkins. Up-and-coming actor, Michael Iskander, best known for starring in the award-winning stage musical, Kimberly Akimbo,...

Gladiator was a truly epic undertaking. It tells the story of Maximus Decimus Meridius, who is sold into slavery and forced to become a gladiator after his family is murdered. He hopes to kill the man responsible, Commodus, but first, he must face near-impossible challenges in the gladiatorial arena.
Filming the movie wasn't remotely easy. Any film that requires fights, battles, swords and living tigers would be the same. Yet the cast and crew persevered against impossible odds, and they ended up with a spectacular triumph. Gladiator was a massive hit: it was the second-highest-grossing film of 2000 and eventually even spawned a sequel. Hopefully, making the sequel was an easier ride.

The Lawrence of Arabia TV series budget may be bigger than the original 1962 movie, even when accounting for inflation. Directed by David Lean, the original 1962 film follows the true tale of T.E. Lawrence, a British officer who united and led Arab tribes in a fight against the Ottoman Empire during World War I. In September 2024, it was announced that a Lawrence of Arabia TV series was in the works from director Roland Emmerich, known for the disaster movies Independence Day, The Day After Tomorrow, and 2012.
During Roland Emmerich's recent interview with Screen Daily, it was revealed that his upcoming TV series, officially titled Lawrence, is being planned as two seasons consisting of eight episodes each, budgeted between $80 million and $90 million per season. This would cost more than the original movie's $15 million budget which, even when adjusted for inflation, would be around $156 million.

Ridley Scott returned to Ancient Rome with the long-awaited sequel Gladiator II, a bigger and splashier sequel whose excesses include double the number of volatile emperors. Joaquin Phoenix played the tortured, crazed Emperor Commodus in 2000's Gladiator, but, twenty-four years later, Joseph Quinn and Fred Hechinger took his place to portray twin emperors Geta and Caracalla in Gladiator II. In addition to Quinn and Hechinger, the cast of Gladiator II includes Paul Mescal, Denzel Washington, Pedro Pascal, Lior Raz, Derek Jacobi, and Connie Nielsen reprising her original role as Lucilla.

Peacock's series, Those About To Die, has revitalized the sword and sandal genre for the first time in at least a decade. This specific genre, which often blends history, epic legends and war, and fantastical elements, has had a few glorious decades in cinematic history, especially in the '60s, '80s, and 2000s. This show will have a lot to live up to, especially when the trope has been far more successful in film than in TV shows.
In modern pop culture, no sword and sandal movie is quite as well-known as Gladiator, which is praised for its action-packed storyline and Russell Crowe's portrayal as the gladiator Maximus. These films aren't necessarily known for capturing historical legends and events with accuracy and grace. However, there are many outside of this iconic 2000s film that honor the intense, epic narratives and heroes the unique genre is known for. The...

“Independence Day” and “Those About To Die” director Roland Emmerich and Marco Weber are developing a live-action TV series based on “Space Nation Online,” the titular Web3 video game at the center of their new transmedia IP company, Space Nation Inc.
Per Space Nation Inc.,”The series will map out the origins of the epic story that began with the recent soft launch of Space Nation Online, a massively multiplayer online role-playing game (Mmorpg) that sends players to a distant star cluster where humanity has settled following Earth’s destruction.”

Oliver Berben, who took the reins of German production and distribution powerhouse Constantin Film on March 1, faces a German media landscape that is “changing radically and quickly,” he says. In response, he is adjusting the company’s approach to the business.
He welcomes the government’s proposed reform of the German Film Law, which will change the country’s production incentives, including for television, and will introduce an obligation on broadcasters and streamers to invest 20% of sales generated in Germany back into European productions, 70% of which would have to be in the German language.
“You have stagnating funding of public broadcasters. You have declining revenues for the private stations. The question is: Is the model functioning altogether? It is not, if we just keep on doing the same thing again and again.”

It took Ridley Scott twenty years to return to the Roman Colosseum with Gladiator II, but he is already plotting his third trip to Ancient Rome.
“I’d rather get on into Gladiator III,” Scott told The Hollywood Reporter Thursday when asked about a different potential next project for the 86-year-old filmmaker. “There’s already an idea.” He added that he’s taking inspiration from The Godfather Part II for the next story.
The Gladiator 3 news first trickled out Friday after the French publication Premiere published similar comments from Scott.
Gladiator II opens Nov. 22 and arrives 20 years after Scott’s Gladiator, which won five Oscars, including best picture and best actor for Russell Crowe. Paul Mescal, Pedro Pascal, Denzel Washington, Joseph Quinn and Connie Nielsen star in the new film.
Scott remains one of the most prolific directors working in Hollywood, a filmmaker who at times release two films in a single year.

Those About to Die director Roland Emmerich discusses what season 2 would explore. Those About to Die is an action-packed historical comedy drama that explores Ancient Rome through the lens of the entertainment business. The series has one season, and has released 10 episodes on Peacock. Those About to Die features a leading cast including Anthony Hopkins, Iwan Rheon, Sara Martins, Jojo Macari, Moe Hashim, Tom Hughes, and Dimitri Leonidas.
Speaking with The Hollywood Reporter, Emmerich envisions what Those About to Die season 2 might look like. Likening the prospective second season to Godfather II, the director explained that he would like to tell stories using a "present timeline" and "past timeline." The flashback periods would explore The Year of Four Emperors, set 10 years before the events of Those About to Die season 1. These moments include Emperor Nero's suicide and the resulting struggle for power. The season would alternate between this history and the present-day timeline.

Season 2 of Roland Emmerich's sword-and-sandals drama, Those About to Die, could be going back in time (even further than Season 1), as the director has based his plans for the series on Francis Ford Coppola's seminal The Godfather trilogy. Released on Peacock and Prime Video earlier this year, No Time to Die explores the dirty underbelly of Rome, as members of the four factions vie for control over the newly built Colosseum, all while the city faces ongoing food shortages and riots. Season 1 received decent reviews from audiences, although it has yet to be officially renewed for a second season.
While the official confirmation has yet to come, Roland Emmerich (who directed half of season 1 and acted as showrunner), is already planning ahead for the second season, and has teased that the historical timeline is going to get disjointed. "We hope to do a little bit what Godfather II did,...

Film director, screenwriter, and producer, Roland Emmerich, is working on a highly controversial remake as he plans to bring the multi-Oscar-winning Lawrence of Arabia back to screens. Known as "The master of disaster", Emmerich has directed several major blockbuster films, including 1996's smash hit, Independence Day, starring Will Smith, 2004's The Day After Tomorrow, and 2009's 2012. In partnership with writer, Anthony McCarten, known for Bohemian Rhapsody, the two are shopping around a three-season television series titled In Arabia (via THR). The new series will feature even more characters than in the already epic film. The pitch of a television show is intriguing, as the additional runtime could benefit the expansive story by giving the complex political setting and enigmatic characters more time to be explored.

A classic historian has nothing but praise for HBO's Rome. Having run from 2005 to 2007 before its season 2 cancelation, the show featured a live-action depiction of Julius Caesar's rise to power in the dying days of the Roman Republic. Alongside Ciarn Hinds's Caesar were the two leads, Lucius Vorenus (Kevin McKidd) and Titus Pullo (Ray Stevenson), who played two soldiers in Caesar's chief legion. After the similar historical show, Those About To Die, was released in 2024, memories of HBO's hit have earned additional recognition.

Roland Emmerich brought ancient Rome to life in Season 1 of Those About to Die by telling a chronological story. Events unfolded as several ambitious residents attempted to climb the tall social ladder, but Domitian (Jojo Macari) and Tenax (Iwan Rheon) succeeded somewhat. Season 1 took place in 79 Ad, and for Season 2, if renewed, Emmerich told The Hollywood Reporter that they intended to go even further back by shaking up the format. We hope to do a little bit what Godfather II did, he said, referencing the dual timeline employed in telling Vito and Michael's stories. This corroborates what he told Collider about Season 2 plans. He teased the timeline shift to bring the story together, saying,...

Despite its hip-hop heavy trailer and a rhino riding gladiator, Ridley Scott wants to remind fans that Gladiator II isn't a fantasy. The upcoming sequel, which stars Paul Mescal as an aged up Lucius (originally played by Spencer Treat Clark), takes Scott back to ancient Rome, 24 years after the original movie. As well as telling a kick-ass story of a Gladiator rising up against the rulers of Rome, Scott made Gladiator and Gladiator II to remind audiences that ancient history is, well... history.

A Lawrence of Arabia TV show may be on the way, and famous director Roland Emmerich is shopping the idea. Inspired by the epic 1962 movie, which starred eight-time Oscar nominee Peter O'Toole, the show would focus on the real-world historical figure, T. E. Lawrence. Emmerich has extensive experience in Hollywood, having worked on Those About to Die, Independence Day (1996), and The Day After Tomorrow (2004).

Although Those About to Die was a success for Peacock, it remains to be seen if we’ll see season 2 of the historical drama, but that hasn’t stopped Roland Emmerich from dreaming about it.
Should Those About to Die return for a second season, Emmerich told THR that he’d like to take a little inspiration from The Godfather Part II and feature dual timelines. “We hope to do a little bit what Godfather II did,” Emmerich said, adding that the show would continue the story in the present timeline and explore The Year of the Four Emperors in the flashback timeline. The flashbacks would take place 10 years before the events of the series and begin with the suicide of Emperor Nero (Emmerich is already thinking of who could play the character). This event led to power struggles and rebellions, with Galba, Otho, and Vitellius each being proclaimed Emperor...
Roland Emmerich traveled back to 79 Ad for season one of his gladiator drama Those About to Die. For season two, he has dreams of traveling back even earlier.
“We hope to do a little bit what Godfather II did,” Emmerich told The Hollywood Reporter of a potential season two. Emmerich says the show could tell dual stories using a “present timeline” and a “past timeline,” ala 1974’s The Godfather Part II, which explored the rise of Vito Corelione (Robert De Niro) via flashbacks and continued the story of his son Michael Corelione (Al Pacino) in the “present day” story.

Former Cinecittà Studios CEO Nicola Maccanico has been appointed to the newly created role of CEO of Fremantle Italy Group.
Maccanico, who is a former Warner Bros. and Sky Italia senior exec, had been spearheading the radical overhaul of Cinecittà for three years, but stepped down last June after Italy’s right-wing government decided to change the studios’ management team.
He had been instrumental to relaunching the iconic filming facilities, which lured big shoots last year such as Roland Emmerich’s gladiator series “Those About to Die” starring Anthony Hopkins and Netflix’s period soap “The Decameron.”
Maccanico will now oversee Fremantle Italy’s wide-ranging Italian operations that comprise labels Wildside, The Apartment Pictures, Lux Vide and Fremantle Italy. Their respective CEO’ Sonia Rovai, Annamaria Morelli, Luca Bernabei and Marco Tombolini will report to him. Maccanico will also join Fremantle’s gobal leadership team, according to a statement.

The resignation of Italy’s culture minister Gennaro Sangiuliano on Friday, after he admitted to having an extramarital affair with a ministry consultant, is prompting hope across the Italian industry that his departure could help remove legislative impediments that many claim are causing a production slowdown.
Sangiuliano stepped down Friday in the wake of a scandal that dominated Italian headlines for days and rocked Italy’s right-wing government headed by Giorgia Meloni. It involves Maria Rosaria Boccia, a self-proclaimed fashion entrepreneur who claimed on Instagram to have been hired as a ministry advisor. After Sangiuliano denied this, it surfaced that they had been having an affair.
Sangiuliano has been replaced as culture minister by Alesandro Giuli, head of Rome’s Maxxi museum of contemporary art and architecture. Giuli on Saturday made the trek to the Venice Film Festival to attend the closing ceremony, during which anger was vented against long-gestating...
