FAQ

Chen qing ling

FAQ

The answer it both yes and no. Officially, it is not Yaoi/BL due to China's film censorship of LGBT+ characters. However, unlike most Chinese BL-based dramas that shift to bromance, The Untamed provides many subtexts that hint the homoerotic relationship between the two main characters. Additionally, a behind-the-scenes footage shows the director and actors Wang Yibo (who plays Lan Wangji) and Xiao Zhan (who plays Wei Wuxian) referring to the two male leads as "boyfriends" and "husbands". There are also other BTS clips where the director and the writers of the series explain how the actors can implicitly show their relationship. So, technically, The Untamed is still Yaoi/Boys' Love in its context.

The series opens with an "in medias res", which means that it starts with a scene from a later episode. After the opening scene, a time jump of 16 years later will occur for 2 episodes. By the end of Episode 2, it jumps back to the events from 16 years ago, but all before the events from the "in medias res" or the opening scene of Episode 1. The flashback occurs until the first half of Episode 33, with the second half following the events left from Episode 2. So, if the series is to be watched chronologically, the story begins in the end of Episode 2 followed by Episode 3 until the first half of Episode 33, then Episode 1 and the first 38 minutes of Episode 2, and the story continues in the second half of Episode 33 until the finale, Episode 50.
