Exclusive: Terry Gilliam’s biblical comedy Carnival: At The End Of Days has been boarded by prolific Italian producer and entrepreneur Andrea Iervolino, whose credits include Ferrari, Maserati: The Brothers and To The Bone.
Iervolino is due to produce and help finance the film and is heading to the European Film Market in Berlin this month to discuss the project with potential buyers and will look to add a sales agent while there. The aim is to shoot in Italy as soon as April.
According to Iervolino, the project will reflect Gilliam’s customary ambition, scope and creative vision. He describes it to us as “an epic and visionary work” and a “live-action film that makes unprecedented use of CGI”: “Carnival is an extraordinarily complex film for an independent production. It is a project that blends live-action aesthetics with an unprecedented amount of CGI. It is, without a doubt,...

Heath Ledger’s Last Film Tribute (Photo Credit – Instagram)
Seventeen years ago, Heath Ledger’s sudden death in January 2008 shook the world. At just 28 years old, the actor was soon seen in an unforgettable performance as the maniacal criminal Joker in The Dark Knight. However, Christopher Nolan’s Batman flick wasn’t his final project.
While his outlandish turn as Joker deservingly earned him a posthumous Academy Award, Ledger was also in the middle of The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus, a fantasy drama co-starring Andrew Garfield. To complete the shooting after Ledger’s passing, not one but three actors — Johnny Depp, Jude Law, and Colin Farrell — came on board to actualize the Australian actor’s last work.
In a powerful gesture of generosity, the trio of English, Irish, and American actors donated their entire earnings from the film to Ledger’s and Michelle Williams’ 2-year-old daughter, Matilda, ensuring she would...

Chief of Engineering Montgomery Scott is one of the Star Trek characters with the most staying power; after his introduction in Star Trek: The Original Series, he has now reappeared in both Star Trek (2009) and most recently in the finale of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds. From the very beginning, the Scotty of The Original Series (James Doohan) was something of a miracle worker: He solves seemingly unsolvable engineering problems impossibly quickly. It is hardly surprising, then, that Scotty keeps coming back to Star Trek.
Like many characters in Tos, Scotty's backstory is left unspecified. It wasn't even confirmed that he was born in Scotland until the Star Trek: The Next Generation episode "Relics." For Tos, it was less important to specify how Scotty came to be than it was to show what adventures he faced with the crew of the Enterprise. This meant that when Scotty was re-introduced in...

It has been nearly 17 years since Oscar winner Heath Ledger’s death, and now his one-time co-star, Julia Stiles, is remembering the actor. Stiles starred with Ledger in 1999’s classic teen romantic comedy 10 Things I Hate About You. Per People, Stiles, while promoting the film Wish You Were Here on Watch What Happens Live With Andy Cohen, touched on working with Ledger on the movie.
“He was such a force,” said Stiles, who co-wrote and makes her directorial debut with Wish You Were Here, which hits theaters Jan. 17. “He walked into a room and just lit it up and had so much energy and passion, and it’s really sad that he’s gone,” Stiles said.

When you're making a movie, you can only control so much. You can meticulously plan your shots; you can account for every dollar of your budget in advance; you can hire all the best people to make sure each department completes its mission at the highest caliber. The world is random and full of tragedy, however, and sometimes, film productions have to deal with shocking, unexpected loss. When an actor dies while still in production on a movie, that can send a production reeling.
It's happened many times in the past. For example, James Dean had just finished shooting "Giant" when he died in a car crash, only 24 years old. Because his part still required a significant amount of Adr, his "Rebel Without a Cause" co-star Nick Adams dubbed over many of his lines.

Andrew Garfield has turned himself into quite the actor over the last decade or so. Not only does he star in acclaimed films such as "Tick, Tick...Boom!" or the recently released "We Live in Time" for A24, but he's also capable of delivering the goods in blockbusters as well. He was a major reason why 2021's "Spider-Man: No Way Home" became one of the biggest movies ever. But before he became an A-list actor capable of walking comfortably in both of these worlds, he starred in an oft-forgotten drama alongside Tom Cruise.
The movie was 2007's "Lions for Lambs," directed by cinematic legend Robert Redford, who also stars in the film. Not only that, but Meryl Streep, one of the greatest actors of all time, was in the film as well, as was future big star Michael Peña. In hindsight,...

Heath Ledger was a perfect example of cinematic brilliance, that truly shined in the work he did in the industry. Born and raised in Australia, the actor shifted to the United States to pursue his acting dreams. While he was able to do just that, his portrayal of Joker in The Dark Knight received a lot of acclaim, including an Academy Award. This would have been the biggest day of his life, sadly the actor passed away just six months before the release of the movie.

Joaquin Phoenix won an Oscar for his portrayal of Joker in Todd Phillips’ 2019 film. But a little over a decade before it was released, he says he was approached about taking on the Clown Prince of Crime in Christopher Nolan’s iconic The Dark Knight.
Phoenix sat down for Rick Rubin’s Tetragrammaton podcast (below), for a more than two-hour conversation, where the actor explained that he spoke to Nolan about taking on the role of Joker years before he actually did.
“That didn’t… wasn’t going to happen for a number of reasons. I wasn’t ready then,” Phoenix said on the podcast. “That’s one of those things sometimes where you go: Why am I not doing this project? What is stopping me from doing this? Well it’s not about me, there’s something else. There’s another person that’s going to do something that’s like,...

Heath Ledger’s turn as The Joker in 2008’s The Dark Knight remains one of the most chilling performances of this century, the actor eventually winning a posthumous Oscar for the defining portrayal of The Clown Prince of Crime. Based on peeks and teases, we knew we would be in for something special when the film came out. And so did Ledger himself, fully aware just how powerful the performance and The Dark Knight would be.
Recounting working with Heath Ledger on The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus, Andrew Garfield (Anton) remembered the star telling him about his go as The Joker. “He had just done the Joker, he had just finished doing The Dark Knight, and he was so smug about it. I was like, ‘How did that go?’ and he was like, ‘Yeah, it’s really good.’”

English-American actor Andrew Garfield first turned heads with his breakout role in The Social Network, followed quickly by a 4-year stint as The Amazing Spider-Man in Marc Webb's Spider-Man reboot that successfully solidified Garfield's status as a household name. But a recent podcast interview revealed Garfield's fondness for a much earlier and far less popular project: Terry Gilliam's 2009 fantastical film The Imaginarium of Dr. Parnassus, which put Garfield face-to-face with the unforgettable Heath Ledger shortly after Ledger's iconic stint as the Joker in Christopher Nolan's The Dark Knight.
Appearing on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Garfield recalled the brief yet memorable time he spent working alongside Ledger. His most prominent memory: Ledger's smug insistence that The Dark Knight would be an instant hit, months before the film premiered in July 2008. Heath Ledger died months before The Dark Knight arrived in theaters. As a result, the actor never got to see the response to his performance as The Joker or receive the "Best Supporting Actor" Oscar, which he was posthumously awarded the following year.
According to The Amazing Spider-Man star Andrew Garfield, Ledger was understandably confident about The Dark Knight being a hit after teaming with Christopher Nolan on the Batman Begins sequel.
Garfield, who shared the screen with Ledger in 2009's The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus, remembers the actor as a "very generous, beautiful, creative spirit." He'd call him "a kind of beacon, it was like a wild animal" on set, adding, "He was so free and so wild and so, kind of dangerous on set in a way that was the kind of thing that is inspiring and spontaneous."

Andrew Garfield didn't work with the late Heath Ledger for long, but their collaboration came at a crucial time in his career. The "Spider-Man: No Way Home" star worked with the beloved actor shortly after Ledger played Joker in Christopher Nolan's "The Dark Knight." That performance would eventually net Ledger a posthumous Oscar for his now-legendary work as Batman's greatest foe in what is widely considered to be one of the greatest comic book movies ever made. And according to Garfield, it seems as though Ledger was pretty confident about the film, even though he never got to see the world react to it.

Heath Ledger predicted the success of The Dark Knight before his death, Andrew Garfield shared this week.
Garfield said during an appearance on the Happy Sad Confused podcast that he and the late actor crossed paths shortly after Ledger finished filming Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight.

Ledger died at age 28 of an accidental drug overdose about six months before the release of The Dark Knight, but his predictive powers turned out to be true: The film broke several box office records, and the Joker star earned a posthumous Oscar for best supporting actor.

Just like any other parent, Andrew Garfield’s father had certain expectations from his son. Expectations that didn’t necessarily resonate with what the actor wanted to do with his life. In a scene worthy of one of his animated works, Terry Gillam took to a stage covered in crashed paper planes at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival on Sunday to receive its honorary Cristal award and give a masterclass about his animated works.
Gilliam was last in Annecy, where its audience has a tradition of bombarding the stage with paper planes, in 1975 with Miracle of Flight. The anarchic comedy about mankind’s different attempts to fly debuted in the shorts competition but did not win a prize.
“Do you know how long it’s taken me to get this f**king award… They’ve finally let me in… I think they know I might not be around next year,” joked the director as he received the trophy.

Johnny Depp, Jeff Bridges, Adam Driver, and Jason Momoa are set to star in a new movie directed by Terry Gilliam, titled The Carnival at the End of Days.
The news was confirmed by Gilliam himself in a recent interview with the French publication Premiere, in which he explained the premise of the film. “God decides to destroy humanity, and the only one trying to save us is Satan because he needs people in hell, otherwise he won’t have a job for eternity,” he said. Depp and Bridges are set to play Satan and God, respectively.
“It will be very funny for those who like to be offended,” Gilliam said. Elsewhere, he expanded on what he has in mind for Bridge’s God character. “He will not be the God we are used to,” he said. “In the film, God is nature, but a nature that can talk to you.

You never want to see an actor get replaced, really for any reason. Those reasons could range anywhere from bad behavior off-screen to salary disputes, to the classic "scheduling conflicts" excuse, but the worst possible reason for having to recast someone is a tragic death. There haven't been many instances of this throughout Hollywood history, but one of the most notable examples was when Heath Ledger passed away in 2008 while shooting what would become his final film role, The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus. This could have completely tanked the project and caused it to shut down, since Ledger was playing an important character whose actions helped drive the plot. However, writer/director Terry Gilliam came up with an idea that worked within the confines of his magical fantasy world: he recast Ledger's character with three different actors, all friends of Ledger, and all playing the same character.

Depp’s London-based film company In.2 is gearing up to release the Court of Versailles-set tale across the UK from this Friday, April 19.
Gilliam, who directed Depp in Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas (1998) and The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus (2009), jokingly ticked Depp off for his late arrival.
“Sorry, it’s too late — the film has started 10 minutes ago,” quipped Gilliam as Depp arrived at the Curzon Mayfair cinema.
He then referred to Depp as the “new Jackie Chan” as the actor enveloped him in a bear hug, seemingly in reference to the fact the star has been working out.

With Colin Farrell taking over the role as the Penguin and no doubt on his way to becoming the “definitive” version for a younger generation, he reflected on some of the other quintessential performances throughout the Batman franchise. And like so many of us, he put Heath Ledger’s Joker at number one.
When asked which performance in any Batman movie was his favorite, Colin Farrell replied, “I mean, Heath. Heath takes it, you know.” That’s about as good of a pick as you can have, as Ledger’s Joker is widely considered one of the best performances in any comic book movie, even earning him one of the few posthumous acting Oscars ever given. Colin Farrell has a pretty special professional connection to Heath Ledger, too, stepping in (alongside Johnny Depp and Jude Law) to fill in for Ledger on The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus following his tragic 2008 death,...

If you were to just look at the beginning of their careers, Terry Gilliam and Johnny Depp seemingly had completely opposite trajectories. Gilliam started out crafting wacky animations for the British comedy troupe Monty Python in the late '60s, while Depp got his big break as an '80s heartthrob thanks to 21 Jump Street. However, a study of their later work clearly shows how the two creative minds were ultimately destined to intersect.
Gilliam went on to become a director of feature films, and made a name for himself in Hollywood by creating surreal, visually captivating sci-fi and fantasy films like Time Bandits, Brazil, The Adventures of Baron Munchausen, and 12 Monkeys. When Johnny Depp completely transformed for Tim Burton's Edward Scissorhands in 1990, it showed his willingness to challenge himself creatively and foreshadowed the oddball roles that he would take on later in his career. The season two finale of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds features Captain Pike and the crew of the Enterprise facing off against the Gorn, a battle that was 80 years in the making. The Gorn were based on an author's short story from 1944, which Star Trek screenwriter Gene L. Coon accidentally plagiarized in a Tos episode titled "Arena." Gene L. Coon, responsible for creating iconic villains like the Klingons and Khan Noonien Singh, also created the Gorn, who continue to terrorize the crew of the Enterprise in Snw's cliffhanger season finale.

Warning: Contains Spoilers for Star Trek: Strange New Worlds' season 2 finale.
Star Trek: Strange New Worlds' season 2 finale features a colony planet, Parnassus Beta, that pays homage to the themed worlds seen in the original series, adding a familiar element to the new show. The choice of Parnassus Beta's design as a 21st-century American Midwest town reflects the founders' desire to break away from the advanced technology of the 23rd century. The presence of themed planets in the Star Trek universe can be attributed to budget constraints and the availability of props and costumes, but it also allows for recognizable and relatable settings for future episodes of Strange New Worlds.
The stricken colony planet Parnassus Beta in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds' season 2 finale is a callback to the themed worlds from Star Trek: The Original Series, making both shows more alike. The colony planet is just outside Federation space.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds' season 2 finale, "Hegemony," maintains the established Star Trek canon surrounding the Gorn, avoiding any major disruptions to the storyline. In 2023, many of Terry Gilliam's old fans have been forced to face some of the director's questionable behavior, dark opinions, and irresponsible filming style. Briefly: in 2020, Gilliam said in public that the #MeToo movement was a witch hunt, downplaying the widespread sexual abuse the movement sought to highlight. Gilliam followed those statements with a defense of Harvey Weinstein, a defense that fell in line with a notorious petition he signed a decade previous seeking to exonerate Roman Polanski. Woody Allen, Martin Scorsese, Michael Mann, Pedro Almodóvar, Alejandro González Iñárritu, Wong Kar-Wai, and David Lynch also signed the petition. So did Harvey Weinstein, who asked many for support.
Famously, Gilliam's films have almost all had troubled shoots, and each one comes prepackaged with a chaotic story about its making. "Brazil" was infamously recut several times, "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas" briefly didn't know which script it was supposed to use,...

Ryan Grantham, a Canadian actor whose credits include “Riverdale,” “Diary of a Wimpy Kid” and “Supernatural,” has been sentenced to life in prison with parole ineligibility of 14 years for the second-degree murder of his mother, CBC reports.
In March 2020, the actor shot his mom, Barbara Waite, in the back of the head with a .22 rifle as she played piano in their home in Squamish, British Columbia. As shown in court, Grantham then took a GoPro video shortly after the murder, in which he confesses to killing his mother and shows her body. The following day, he covered the body with a sheet, surrounded it with lit candles and hung a rosary from the piano, before driving east to Ottawa in a car packed with guns, ammunition and Molotov cocktails. His intention was to kill Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. Instead, he drove to Hope, B.C., with thoughts of committing a...

Former Riverdale and Diary of a Wimpy Kid actor Ryan Grantham has been sentenced to life behind bars without the possibility of parole for 14 years for the 2020 killing of his mother.
The by-the-book second-degree murder punishment was handed down by British Columbia Supreme Court Justice Kathleen Ker on September 21 in Vancouver. With the sentence already a forgone conclusion over the laws of the Canadian province, the only real wild card was how long the guilty pleading Grantham would have to wait before the currently 24-year-old could apply for parole.
The Leo Awards nominated Grantham turned himself into police soon after shooting his 64-year-old mother Barbara Waite in the back of the head on March 31, 2020, in the family’s Squamish home, just north of Vancouver.
A second-degree murder charge in B.C. comes with no parole eligibility of between 10 and 25 years. In that context, prosecutors had recommended in a sentencing hearing...

Ryan Grantham, the former “Riverdale” actor who pleaded guilty to killing his mother, was sentenced to life in prison with the ability to apply for parole after 14 years on Thursday.
The sentence, handed down by a Canadian judge, was automatic with his second-degree murder conviction, with only the length of parole ineligibility in question.
CBC reported the news.
The 24-year-old’s sentencing was levied by Justice Kathleen Kerr of the British Columbia Supreme Court in Vancouver. Court proceedings were held in June to determine when Grantham should be eligible for parole.
The previous hearing made headlines after prosecutors said that Grantham — whose credits include the 2010 film “Diary of a Wimpy Kid” and a 2019 episode of “Riverdale” — allegedly plotted an attempted assassination of Prime Minister Justin Trudeau in which he packed his vehicle with guns, ammunition, a dozen Molotov cocktails and a map to Trudeau’s family residence in Ottawa. Canadian actor Ryan Grantham, who pleaded guilty to the second-degree murder of his mother, allegedly plotted an attempted assassination against Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, CBC has reported.
The 24-year-old’s sentencing hearing by the British Columbia Supreme Court began on Monday. While the charge carries an automatic life sentence, the court proceedings were held to determine when Grantham should be eligible for parole.
During the hearing, prosecutors said that Grantham — whose credits include the 2010 film “Diary of a Wimpy Kid” and a 2019 episode of “Riverdale” — allegedly packed his vehicle with guns, ammunition, a dozen Molotov cocktails and a map to Trudeau’s family residence in Ottawa. More than a decade later, Heath Ledger's death still brings up the same futile thoughts about what might've been. About what sort of father he would have been, about whether he and Michelle Williams might have one day reconciled and, perhaps most predominantly, about what sort of work he would've done, passing away five months before The Dark Knight hit theaters. Back in January 2020, amid his award season tour for his Joker role, Joaquin Phoenix paid tribute to his late friend, the man who had played the Batman's archenemy 11 years...

Exclusive: Deadline has the first exclusive track from Jeff Danna’s score for Julia, which is set for release tomorrow via Watertower Music.
HBO Max’s eight episode comedy series is inspired by Julia Child’s (Sarah Lancashire) extraordinary life and her long-running television series, The French Chef, which pioneered the modern cooking show. Through Julia’s life and her singular joie de vivre, the series explores a pivotal time in American history—the emergence of public television as a new social institution, feminism and the women’s movement, the nature of celebrity and America’s cultural evolution. At its heart, the show is a portrait of a loving marriage with a shifting power dynamic.
One of Danna’s main challenges in his work here was to develop a theme that could speak to both the culinary icon’s spirit, and the series’ “brilliant and warm showcase” of her early years on television.
