Wil Wheaton's Wesley Crusher was one of Star Trek: The Next Generation's most divisive characters, but he has made some truly great contributions to modern Star Trek. Introduced as a child prodigy-type character in Tng's first season, Wesley was, in part, a self-insert character for Star Trek creator Gene Roddenberry. Despite being one the youngest people on the USS Enterprise-d, Wesley often solved problems that stumped even the most senior officers on the ship. This led some fans to dislike the character, even though the young Wil Wheaton consistently delivered a solid performance.
Aside from his role as Wes, Wil Wheaton has become a staple in the Star Trek fandom and hosted the official Star Trek after show, The Ready Room on Paramount+. Wheaton ultimately left Star Trek: The Next Generation during the show's fourth season, but later returned for four more episodes. After brief appearances in Star Trek: Nemesis...

Star Trek is often family-friendly, but one early episode of Star Trek: The Next Generation was banned by the BBC for being too violent. Following the adventures of Captain Jean-Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart) and the USS Enterprise-d, Tng is not known for being particularly dark or gory. Captain Picard usually attacks problems with words and diplomacy rather than phaser fire, but he takes a different approach in Tng season 1, episode 25, "Conspiracy".
"Conspiracy" almost didn't air at all because even some of the producers worried it was too much. However, in the UK, the network hosting Star Trek: Tng was much stricter when it came to gore and violence. At that time, it was the BBC, the UK's taxpayer-funded network, that had broadcasting rights for Star Trek: The Next Generation. There was one scene in "Conspiracy" that the BBC took incredible chagrin with, and so in the UK it became a...

1984 signaled the beginning of the “Coming of Age” trilogy that began with “A Summer in Grandpa's”. The film is based on Chu Tien Wen's childhood memories, one of the most renowned theatrical writers and novelists of the country. The protagonists are two kids, a fact that established Hou's ability to direct kid actors. The movie won a Best Director award at the 1984 Asia-Pacific Film Festival, the Golden Montgolfiere award (tied with The Runner (1984)) at the 1985 Nantes Three Continents Festival, and the Prize of the Ecumenical Jury – Special Mention at the 1985 Locarno International Film Festival. It was also the first work of the Taiwanese auteur to screen in the US, in 1986. Also of note is the fact that Hou cast Edward Yang in a brief role, with Yang returning the favor by casting Hou in his film “Taipei Story”

In 1986, Hou Hsiao-hsien concluded the “Coming of Age” trilogy with “Dust in the Wind”, which was however, a commercial failure, despite the excellent reviews it got. The script is based upon the life experiences of Wu Nien-jen, co-writer of the movie along Chu Tien-wen, who is considered as one of the most important and prolific artists of New Cinema, as scriptwriter, director and actor.

Screen veteran Glynis Johns, who very memorably played Mrs. Banks in the beloved movie Mary Poppins, has died.
The Hollywood Reporter has revealed that Johns passed away on Thursday at an assisted living facility in West Hollywood. Her passing was confirmed by her manager, Mitch Clem. Johns, who officially became the oldest living Disney Legend following Betty White's passing in 2021, was 100 years old.
Johns, considered to have been one of the last surviving stars of the Golden Age of Hollywood, had an impressive career with more than eight decades spent in show business, having portrayed dozens of characters on stage and on the screen. One of her most well-known roles is as Winifred Banks, the feminist mother of Jane (Karen Dotrice) and Michael (Matthew Garber), and wife of George Banks (David Tomlinson). Glynis Johns, the upbeat leading lady with the British charm who starred as the spirited feminist mother Winifred Banks in Mary Poppins, has died. She was 100.
Johns lived in West Hollywood and died Thursday of natural causes at an assisted living facility in the area, her manager, Mitch Clem, told The Hollywood Reporter.
A multitalented actress, dancer, pianist and singer, Johns earned a best supporting actress Oscar nomination for playing the widowed saloon and hotel owner Mrs. Firth in Fred Zinnemann’s Australia-set The Sundowners (1960).
Plus, she memorably sang “Send in the Clowns,” which Stephen Sondheim wrote just for her, in her Tony Award-winning performance as Desiree Armfeldt in the original 1973 production of A Little Night Music.

Wesley Crusher's destiny to join Starfleet was assumed by Captain Picard and the Enterprise crew without considering other possibilities for his future. Wesley's failure to initially get into Starfleet Academy made him question his path and fear disappointing others, leading him to realize he never questioned his future before. Wesley's encounter with his father's vision and the guidance of the Traveler revealed that he was always destined for something greater than Starfleet.

Tng season 1 introduced a Starfleet conspiracy that was quickly shut down by Gene Roddenberry, who didn't want to portray Starfleet officers negatively. The conspiracy plot resurfaced in "Conspiracy" where parasites controlled important Starfleet officers, aligning with Roddenberry's vision of no conflict among the crew. Star Trek: Picard season 3 featured a different conspiracy within Starfleet involving Changelings impersonating officers, highlighting Starfleet's questionable behavior and the revenge-seeking nature of the Changelings.
Star Trek: The Next Generation season 1 introduced a vast Starfleet conspiracy, but Star Trek creator Gene Roddenberry quickly shut down the idea. Tng had a notoriously rocky first season, both in terms of story quality and with writers and producers behind the scenes. Although most Tng episodes were stand-alone stories, Tng season 1, episode 19, "Coming of Age," not only referenced previous episodes, but also introduced two separate plot threads that would be followed up on in later episodes. Worf's biggest fear was depending on others, but he overcomes it as a Starfleet officer on the Enterprise. Throughout his journey in Tng, DS9, and Picard, Worf learns to rely on his crewmates and embrace his Klingon heritage. In Star Trek: Picard season 3, Worf works as a handler for Starfleet Intelligence, proving he has grown as a character while still remaining a Klingon warrior.
Lt. Worf (Michael Dorn) expressed his worst fear in an early episode of Star Trek: The Next Generation, but he has overcome that fear by the time of Star Trek: Picard. Worf was introduced in the premiere episode of Tng with the rest of the cast, but the Klingon did not have much to do for much of Tng season 1. Star Trek: The Next Generation season 1 introduced 7 new alien species, including the Bynars, Benzites, and Travelers. These aliens brought fascinating and important contributions to the Trek universe, with some making major appearances in subsequent series. The season also introduced iconic characters like Q and established the Ferengi as comic relief after initial attempts to make them primary antagonists failed.
Star Trek: The Next Generation boldly ushered in a new era of Star Trek, and introduced 7 new aliens to the franchise. Tng season 1 may have had some less-than-stellar episodes, but it also marked the first appearance of many of Star Trek's most beloved characters and important new alien species. Emily Marshall, who parlayed a gig as a secretary for producer Fred de Cordova on Johnny Carson’s The Tonight Show into a two-decade career as a sitcom writer on Newhart, Rhoda, Wkrp in Cincinnati and Designing Women, has died. She was 79.

Marshall also created the 1988-89 CBS sitcom Coming of Age, which starred Paul Dooley, Phyllis Newman, Alan Young, Glynis Johns, Kevin Pollak and Ruta Lee. The comedy, set in an Arizona retirement community, opened with Severinsen performing the boisterous big band number “Sing, Sing,...

This Star Trek: Discovery article contains spoilers for Season 4, Episode 1.
Star Trek captains are like secret agents or base jumpers: they’re constantly trying to figure out how to not die while, at the same time, recognizing that the dangerous situation they’re in are partially their fault. In Star Trek: Discovery’s Season 4 premiere episode — “Kobayashi Maru” — Captain Michael Burnham is forced to relearn the most hardcore starship captain lesson in all of Trek: You can’t always win and you can’t always save everyone.
The basic idea of the Kobayashi Maru has its roots in Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan, and since 1982 has created a warning for the entire Star Trek canon: Even if you think certain main characters are protected by plot armor, the non-win scenario is always there, threatening to make Trek get real. In Discovery’s “Kobayashi Maru,” this idea comes back in a big way,...

Remember how hard it was to beat computer games in the late ‘80s and early ‘90s? Just when you thought you were doing great on The Oregon Trail, your entire family would die of dysentery or some other floppy-disk catastrophe. Now, imagine what that gameplay would be like if it were set in the Star Trek universe, complete with old-school 8-bit computer graphics. You’ve just imagined a new web-based Star Trek game you can play right now, called, appropriately, Star Trek: Kobayashi Maru. In the new trailer for the game, George Takei calls it an “all you can eat buffet of pain.” He’s not wrong! The game is hard.
Free to play online, Star Trek: Kobayashi Maru has just been released from Scopely, the makers of the popular mobile game Star Trek: Fleet Command. To be clear, Kobayashi Maru is not an extension of Fleet Command. It’s web-based (not mobile) and,...

Michelle Dean’s 2016 Buzzfeed article about real-life mother/daughter duo Dee Dee Blanchard and Gypsy Rose Blanchard predated the popular documentary about them “Mommy Dead and Dearest.” For the first installment of their Hulu anthology “The Act,” Dean and fellow writer, executive producer, and co-creator Nick Antosca told the story of the Blanchards’ toxic relationship, in which Dee Dee manipulated Gypsy — and the world — into believing the latter was sick, while Gypsy struggled to grow up under such rule and ultimately ended up manipulating someone else into killing her mother. Antosca and Dean looked to tell a story not about “what happened,” but instead “how it happened.”
The first episode starts with a glimpse at the fatality of the situation, but Antosca points out, the title of the show is really more about the act of deception on Dee Dee’s (played by Patricia Arquette) part, rather than the act of murder.

When Phil Lord and Chris Miller turned animation on its head with “The Lego Movie” in 2014, they proved you could successfully make a punk rock hero’s journey that was both reverential and iconoclastic. This year Chris McKay expanded into Gotham with “The Lego Batman Movie,” and Charlie Bean takes a naturalistic turn with his martial arts brick adventure, “The Lego Ninjago Movie.” Despite embracing different genres, they are variations on family, friendship, and self-discovery.
“When I first saw ‘The Lego Movie,’ I thought this was so different and so cool,” said Bean, who makes his feature debut after helming the “Tron Uprising” animated series. “It was a garage band type of aesthetic. It doesn’t care about the rules. It can be live-action, it can use different graphic design. We can break the rules and do whatever we want. It’s funnier, more brash, and, at the same time,...

In the most competitive animated Oscar race ever (with a record 27 entries), indie powerhouse Gkids (with eight nominations since 2009) entered the fray with five contenders for the first time. And, on Monday, its two strongest — the stop-motion “My Life as a Zucchini” and the hand-drawn “Miss Hokusai” — grabbed two Annie nominations for best indie feature and a third for “Zucchini” director Claude Barras.

These 25 Star Trek: The Next Generation stories are the series’ unmissable episodes…
This article comes from Den of Geek UK.
Leading the charge back to television for the Star Trek franchise, and paving the way for three further series to follow, Star Trek: The Next Generation's seven seasons had some very high points, and a couple of very low ones
These are the top 25 “must-watch” episodes, not necessarily the top 25 for quality, or indeed my 25 favorites, but the 25 stories that give you the best flavor of the series and its relatively unplanned story arcs. Just don’t forget that, like The Original Series, The Next Generation is a product of its time, and as such certain issues that writers wanted to bring to the screen not only necessitated allegory, but sometimes stretched it thin so as not to raise issues with censorship.

Before Star Trek: Discovery, treat yourself to some Star Trek: The Next Generation classics...
Leading the charge back to television for the Star Trek franchise (just as Star Trek: Discovery is now), and paving the way for three further series to follow (fingers crossed that happens again), Star Trek: The Next Generation's 7 seasons had some very high points, and a couple of very low ones (that some would simply call “season 1....”, not that I’m one of them.)
See related Looking back at Star Trek II: The Wrath Of Khan Would Khan be right for Jj Abrams’ Star Trek sequel? Planet Of The Titans: the Star Trek movie that never was Star Trek: was Cumberbatch supposed to be Gary Mitchell? Star Trek: the battle to make The Motion Picture

After breaking through with”Torches’” hit “Pumped Up Kicks,” the most uplifting infectious song ever about a serial killer, Foster the People returns three years later with its second album, “Supermodel.” “Supermodel” relies on synthesizers and electronics as “Torches” did, but also brings in other elements: lead singer and band namesake Mark Foster traveled to Morocco, as well as wrote an orchestral score for the film, “Bella,” and both of these experiences inform “Supermodel”: it is much more expansive in its musicality than “Torches.” For example, an African flair flavors opening track “Are You What You Want To Be,” after it kicks off with a straight-ahead guitar rock riff. Foster the People aren’t veering into “Graceland” territory by any means (or even Vampire Weekend’s “Contra”), but it’s nice to hear the trio stretching a little. Also added here are more acoustic elements: a lovely piano line runs through first single,...

Are you like me and would prefer to just sleep in every morning? I can't understand the concept of "morning person". As far as I'm concerned, I never want to hear those two words together unless they are preceded by "…gruesome death of a…". But when you are forced to wake up early, what's the worst part of it? The morning news shows that are so sugary they make you want to puke. And that is the subject of Kill Keith.
This UK horror-comedy romp stars Keith Chegwin as himself in a film that is described as Saw meets "Richard and Judy". (Don't worry; I didn't get the reference either without looking it up. "Richard and Judy" was a British morning show of the same ilk as the ones described above.) Blech.
Kill Keith hits theaters on November 11 and has the potential to be a Shaun of the Dead flavored treat.

To follow on from the first teaser trailer that we put up a while back, we’ve been sent the second teaser for new movie, Kill Keith which shows us how the movie was created… sort of!
Kill Keith stars Marc Pickering, Susannah Fielding, Joe Tracini and David Easter plus Keith Chegwin, Tony Blackburn, Joe Pasquale, Russell Grant and is directed by Andy Thompson. It follows the rather unlikely story of someone on a hunt to kill the legendary Keith Chegwin!
I’ve placed the full synopsis below. You’ll be able to see the movie in UK cinemas 11th November.
Welcome to the world of Breakfast TV, with chirpy presenters who wake us up with their positive attitudes and happy dispositions – but something sinister is afoot – there is a killer on the loose, The Breakfast Cereal Killer and few are safe…

A stroke of genius, or completely & utterly bonkers I don’t know, but Kill Keith sure has one of the more intriguing and unique film concepts you are likely to see all year. Basically a remake of Quentin Tarantino’s death list revenge thriller Kill Bill but set around Breakfast Television (!), the Brit horror/comedy is about a cereal killer (!!) who attempts to knock off his own death list of potential celebrity candidates who are up for the job of co-presenting the nation’s favourite morning show – “The Crack of Dawn” – after it’s male presenter leaves.
In breakfast telly’s A-list ensemble elite, basically The Expendables of the daytime goggle-box, Keith Chegwin, Tony Blackburn, Joe Pasquale and Russell Grant all star as co-presenting hopefuls and therefore targets for the killer. Meanwhile Danny Nichols (Marc Pickering), a hapless studio runner who day dreams about being the new co-presenter so he...

Here’s the rather brilliant first poster for new British movie, Kill Keith which stars Marc Pickering, Susannah Fielding, Joe Tracini and David Easter plus Keith Chegwin, Tony Blackburn, Joe Pasquale, Russell Grant and is directed by Andy Thompson. It follows the rather unlikely story of someone on a hunt to kill the legendary Keith Chegwin! The movie is set for release in the UK 11th November and if you missed the first teaser trailer for the film, you can watch it here. Rather liking this new poster which uses Kill Bill for it’s inspiration although seeing Cheggers in this get up is rather interesting!

Norwegian Wood (15)
(Tran Anh Hung, 2010, Japan) Kenichi Matsuyama, Rinko Kikuchi, Kiko Mizuhara, Tetsuji Tamayama, Kengo Kôra. 133 mins
Between its daunting cult status and its decidedly un-romcom themes, it's amazing Haruki Murakami's proto-emo Japanese teen tale ever got made. Coming of age here is a languid, melancholy journey across tragedy, mental illness, sexual frustration and other sorrows, but the tone is beautifully maintained, visually and aurally, and it captures something most youth movies never even attempt to find.
Fair Game (12A)
(Doug Liman, 2010, Us) Naomi Watts, Sean Penn, Ty Burrell. 108 mins
What Hollywood liberal bias? This dramatisation of the outing of CIA agent Valerie Plame over her husband's non-cooperation with Bush's Iraq plans dares to name names and point fingers. True-life political and personal tensions are brought back to the boil.
Battle: Los Angeles (12A)
(Jonathan Liebesman, 2011, Us) Aaron Eckhart, Michelle Rodriguez, Bridget Moynahan. 116 mins
